Infuriated... can't change or reset default ringtone selector - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have a stock Galaxy Nexus running stock Jelly Bean. No root, no unlocked bootloader or anything.
This morning, I accidentally selected 'Always' when choosing a ringtone selector from the stock Contacts application (menu button|select ringtone).
The normal 'Complete Action Using' dialog came up and I inadvertently set the media selector as the default.
Now my phone always defaults to that ringtone selector whenever I try to choose a ringtone for any contact.
I want to reset this preference/option, but I do cannot find any way to do it. Going into settings does not seem to help because:
1. I do not know which app holds the setting for the ringtone selector
2. All of the "Clear Defaults" buttons are grayed out on every app i try to manage.
Is this a bug? This seems like a really stupid thing for Google to overlook. I am hoping that someone can tell me how to fix this without having to do a factory reset
Thanks

The clear all defaults button is just for that app, as an app can be the default for multiple ones.
I think you are just going to have to manually go through everything manually to find what is taking the default, though a safe bet would be to check anything with the word media in it.
The defaults system could do with some tweaks in this regard.. but there doesn't seem to be a way to reset them all without factory resetting

I guess maybe I wasn't clear in my original post....
I cannot click/press "Clear Defaults" for *any* of my apps. The clear defaults button is grayed out on every single app.
I can Force stop app and clear cache, but do not have an option to clear defaults.

I doubt this will work for 4.1, but it's what I found upon Googling:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tostada.android.ClearDefault&hl=en
Might be worth checking out before factory resetting.

The app you listed didn't help, but there was another related app linked from yours that did help.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tostada.android.ClearDefault&hl=en
This app lists phone apps whose 'defaults' have been changed. The app that came up (Media Storage:RINGTONE) was listed under settings, but I was not able to clear the default through that interface (bug?)
Thanks for the assist.

Uninstall and install again the app u want to use to manage ringtones selector
The dialog to choice the app to manage ringtones will appear again...this time do the right choice....

There is also a setting built into JB that let's you reset app defaults in the settings...not sure if this will work for you based on the above.

On Android 4.2.1, I was able to clear this by clearing defaults in Media Storage app. Hope this helps. : )

Did you only look through your apps in the "Downloaded" column? Perhaps you should try "All" if you haven't yet.

my wife made the same mistake this morning, and I was able to reset the sound picker by using the clear defaults option in the zedge app.

I did the same thing earlier today, and I found a solution. It may not work for everybody but I was able to fix this without having to do a factory reset. The app that took over the handling was ES File Explorer. I uninstalled that app and poof it worked. I reinstalled ES again after that, and it brought up the option to select again.
:good:

media storage works !! had the same issue jb 4.1

absolutely same situation. this helped me:
settings -> apps -> all -> media storage -> clear defaults.

Thanks for the suggestions

I had the same problem, and found your post while searching for a solution. I did what you suggested. It may not work for everybody, but it sure worked for me! Thanks!

Reset defaults
Resetting defaults is the way to go. However, in this case, you want to reset defaults of the app which selects the ringtones, not the app FOR which you want to change the ringtone.
When you check the application manager, go to the ALL tab (by default, you see an overview of downloaded apps). Then select "Media Storage" and clear its defaults.

ICS Issues....

Well since I don't have enough posts it won't let me post in the Dev section...ugh....anyway, I just wiped and flashed MazWoz-EVO ICS ROM BETA 4 and had to do it a few times because it kept screwing up after I would restore my apps and data via Titanium. I figured since this was ICS and my previous was Gingerbread there were some issues so I didn't restore data this last time and thought all was well.
I can't seem to get the browser to work and I tried Chrome Beta but I already read on the forum that is not working right with this ROM so I'll try something different. But I heard the ICS Browser is really good so I want to try it! Someone else posted the same issue but no response yet:
slikgman: My browser stopped working and i don't know when and why. I keep getting the message "unfortunately, browser stopped working" i am now using Dolphin HD browser. I've tried using the reboot and ROM manager permission fix to correct the problem.

Then I just went to unlock the phone a minute ago and my background showed up but no icons and none of the home buttons did anything. I could scroll between all the home screens but they were all blank except for my background! Hmmm...maybe I tried ICS too soon...though people on the Dev forum seem to be having a lot of luck with this ROM
Can't really help, but sounds like a bad install. I've been running this ROM for 2 weeks with no issues other than what is stated in OP.

Can I just re-flash the zip or will it force me to wipe again? I just got some of my main apps up and going so I hate to wipe for the third time in the last 12 hours...lol
Also, do you know how to change the lock screen options? I use Handcent for messaging and want to swap out the standard "slide up" to go to Handcent instead of Messaging. I can't figure out how to edit this for the life of me!
Until you've gotten a good install I would always wipe a couple times per the instructions in the OP.
Also, when changing the lock screen icons there is a trick to it. It's discussed many times over in the OP.
Basically (going from memory since I am not running the rom at the moment) you go to the lockscreen changer, if you want to add weather only you use the rosie utility. Otherwise you have to use the other utility option that is there. You can add/change whatever icons you want by tapping the icon and selecting the replacement. The icons on this screen may not update. Once you close the utility the icons and shortcuts should be as you desire. If you go back in it will reset and you will have to do the process over again.
What recovery are you using?

Oops, i just realized my response was for "The Express..." rom shortcuts. Sorry about that!
So to change lockscreen shortcuts go to Apps -> Evervolv toolbox -> Lockscreen -> Lockscreen style -> Custom Mapping -> App shortcut -> Applications....and so on.

I was gonna say! Thanks that's exactly what I needed!
Oh FYI...I sort of figured out the browser issue. All I had to do was go into my Manage Apps, go to Browser and did a Force Stop, Clear Data, and Clear Cache and then went to try it again and it has worked fine since! Weird....
Also, does anyone know where the Car Dock settings are for ICS? I'd like to change the setting to not go into Car Dock mode when docked, since it leaves the phone lit up the whole time. Some ROMs have that option and some don't, but I'd like to know if ICS has that built in and how I get to it.
Another weird thing about this ROM....
If I long press on the home screen to add an app icon, I get the usual list (Apps, Shortcuts, Widgets and Wallpapers) plus choice for Nova Actions. I can add shortcuts and widgets just fine but when I click Apps, it will show me my list of apps but when I select an app it just opens the app! It doesn't add the icon to my home screen! Annoying even though I can still add it there by long pressing the app itself.

[Q] Download Progress of Google Play [not showing on notification tab]

Good day, I wonder what happened to my phone,, I recently had this problem when I download an app on playstore, when the download started, I immediately went to my homescreen and noticed that there is no progress bar on my notification window.. I checked show notifications the settings on google play,.. I don't know what the problem is now,.. please help up on this
I have uploaded some screenshots
The notifications just pop in after it has finished to install the downloaded app, but the progress while downloading never appear in the panel...
has someone encountered this problem before? how can this be fixed?
on the third image, The app is actually downloading on the background, but no notification on download undergoing/progress whatsoever..
I saw this case before just search.

First completely close Google play. Next go to settings/application manager and open Google play store then clear cache and clear data. Then try to download an app and see if problem persists. This happened to me too before but that was due to slow Internet speed.

didn't work,, I tried this before.. tried again today,,
my internet speed is not also a problem, sometimes I have slow speeds that made an app download last forever but still has download progress shown on the notification tab
problem not yet solved.. T.T, but thanks for the reply
Its just there waiting for me to tap..
I kinda fixed it myself.. after reading android manual about notification.. I just reset app preference on application manager
Settings> Application Manager > tap menu (two choices, Sort by size and Reset app preferences) chose Reset app preferences
your download progress should be back when you are installing an app on the web or on google play..

Anyway to un-check "use as default app" option.

I actually like picking my apps every time I open something. But so many times I have clicked an app and it's set as my default because the option is always checked. Anyway to uncheck it?

I think he meant a way to prevent it from automatically selecting "use as default" every time. (As opposed to unsetting an app one it had become default)
I'm looking for this answer as well.

Yeah exactly. I gets frustrating having to reset apps all the time.
no way to uncheck the 'set as default' option that I know of but you can use App Picker Classic app

make sure you follow directions after install, feel free to pm me if you need any help w/ it
Just tap on the app you want to use, but don't hit ok. It will open the app without defaulting it.

eu 8.12.13 - Lockscreen notifications

9.1.3 seems to pretty flawless so far. But there is one issue. Most apps don't get lock-screen notifications. Does anybody else have this issue too?
You can test this with the open source app (no ads) Radiodroid2. It is not possible to get a lock-screen notification for that app, despite tweaking all kind of settings. But it works fine on Nokia, Motorola, Nexus, Pixel devices for example.
---
Just to make sure this is not a config issue ... I wiped my device and reinstalled everything:
- Reset to China beta 8.12.27
- Flashed TWRP
- Wiped data, dalvik, and cache
- Flashed eu 9.1.3
- Flashed Magisk

I should be able to pause music on the lockscreen (like on all the other phones before), but I am not able to figure it out.
I hope you can do it.
Youre right. You have to go to the app's notification settings, then disable and again enable "Show notifications"... Every Time when you start the app..

Assist & Voice input

Hi to all!
Simply question: I want to remove the google assistant in the bottom corners of the homescreen, so i go settings>apps & notifications>default apps>assist & voice input>assist app and i select none and till here nothing to say. The problem is that everytime i reboot or switch off the phone, google assistant return as default app instead of "none" and it's a lot weird. There's a way to definitely remove the app? i don't want to uninstall or disable it, only remove from the corners. Maybe a fake app to put there instead of google. Thank you!

If you're rooted, just freeze it with titaniumbackup. If not rooted, use adb to disable.
Edit... N/m Check the launcher settings? I use nova launcher so never seen it.
Which os are you on?
when I follow that route (settings>apps & notifications>default apps>assist & voice input>assist app) I just have Google, no option for "none".
i use the MS launcher and I've never had the Google assistant on the home screen, switched back to the 1+ default and it wasn't there either
I'm on stock oos 10.0.12, I've taken a screen.. and I'm using Nova launcher

I'm not sure.. I have mine set to 'none' as I don't use the assistant. I haven't had any issues. In fact, it's been that way since I set up the phone some 9 months ago.
