Huge battery drain - Android Core Apps - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
I'm curious if anyone else experienced the same battery drain caused by the Android Core Apps. I used to get at least 2 hours worth of screen time on my gnex, but now it's down to maybe 3/4 of an hour. Settings -> Battery shows Android Core Apps using about 40% of the battery. The phone gets hotter than usual when turned on. Sleep time doesn't seem to be affected.
I also noticed Contacts loading way slower than before with reloading each picture. I tried uninstalling HaxSync but it didn't fix the issue.
Phone is a yakju build with the official OTA JellyBean installed.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be thankful. I tried the usual phone reboot, taking out the battery...Didn't try hard reset yet since it's something I want to avoid at the moment.

This is funny cus lately i see the same thing.sometimes the cpu reaches 100 % because of it, especially the applications search provider process.i thought it was because of something i installed but now that you mention it too then it could he something else.maybe it's Google server issue or something? I'm still with ICS btw.

That's exactly what happens. The phone heats up as well. Especially the right top corner of it.

Same here
I'm seeing the same thing here and I'm on JB on my GN. Have seen this for a couple of days now and android core apps is really eating all the battery just now. Even more than the screen
Any ides of how to proceed?

:crying:

My phones batt life is also not as anywhere near as good as other peoples. I also use Yakju phone, and since JB, the top right corner of my phone gets super hot at times

It looks like we're all experiencing the same thing. So far nothing I've tried worked. Can you guys check if people (contacts) app takes longer to load the contacts than usual?

i have the same problem..... it all happened after jellybeen. today it's hot as hell, and taking for ever to charge. i am going to wipe it clean and go from there.

Yes it's a problem. I try to keep my phone plugged in when I'm at my desk but sometimes I forget. When I forget the battery gets low I make sure these two items are close and fully charged.

I don't have "Android Core Apps" listed on my battery usage; I have "Android OS" and "Android System" but neither is a significant contributor toward the battery drain. My Contacts app also seems to load just fine.
Could you perhaps grab a screenshot of your Battery information page? Both the list of apps and the zoomed-in graph, please.
Another idea might be to try out an app like SystemPanel or Diagnosis to try and get a better idea of exactly which application is using up your juice.

Funny thing is that I didn't have Android Core Apps listed on my battery usage neither...at least not before this started happening. Somehow today seems fine though...nothing changed, nothing new installed or nothing old removed...just charged my phone overnight. It was going on for a week now, but today it's gone...I have a feeling it might come back randomly though. At the moment I'm seeing 84% left after 6 hrs off charger and moderate usage (about 30 mins screen time).
Contacts load considerably faster and phone doesn't get hot either...

Add me to the list. I also am seeing the heat up towards the top back.

I am having this issue as well.
Seems like opening the contacts is slow. Same with call logs.
The other thing I notice is when someone calls you, there is a delay before the caller name/pic shows up.
Update: I uninstalled Viber for Jelly Bean, everything is back to normal.

I have Viber installed as well, but it seems my issue has fixed itself even with viber still installed.
I'll check if maybe there was an update lately.

I think you cannot discuss allthis without referring to the kernels and roms in use.

Like I mentioned, I'm on stock JB - 4.1.1
Unlocked, but not rooted.

Well I have wiped out the phone and reset it. Seems to work better and the battery issue is gone.
Using stock on a bell network phone. Still need a bigger battery.

Same issue
The same exact problem here on my GNEX with JB (Android core apps eating up battery and contacts opening slow) . It seems to have started when I've installed the latest updated Viber App.
I've just unistalled it and will have a check on battery life from now on.

Uninstalled Viber

I uninstalled the latest version of Viber since it crashed on a regurarly basis and now my battery lasts a lot longer and Android core apps is not shown in the list of apps eating battery! Even my contact app loads a lot faster now.
Running JB on a stock GNEX.

Horrible Battery Life

It would seem that after I installed the AT&T update to dumb down thr search on my phone, my battery life has been terrible. Yesterday it was down to about 30% after only 4 hours of light use with the processes "Android OS" and "Cell Standby" taking up the most battery. I can't even get through the day with this phone. Some help would be much appreciated.
After any update, give it a couple days to level out. Until then, just carry an extra charger and plug in when you can.
The update was installed at least a week ago.
In that case, backup everything and do a factory reset when you have a fully charged battery.
Alright I'll give it a shot. I needed to do that anyway as my clipboard no longer works and consistently crashes. :/
I did a factory reset a few weeks ago and that solved it for me.
Do you have any specific methods for backing up a phone that isn't rooted? I've got nova backed up, but I would like to make sure everything else is too.

Are you receiving push email? that was the major drainer for me. apparently the android email app has a bug.
Regarding clipboard...delete everything in data/clipboard; force close the 'test service' app and then restart your phone

The best method would be to use titanium backup but since your not rooted I don't know what options you have except to use the google backup but that ain't to good since its only app data.

Hi all,
Since getting the phone from day one, I really never had a problem with the battery. Lately however, I've noticed a significant drain in battery over night. I tested the drain a few times over several nights, and even put my phone into "airplane" mode to help save battery.
Below are my results from going to sleep at 1:30am with 100% battery power and in airplane mode and waking up at 9:30am the next morning. I get a 12% decrease in battery over night for doing nothing over the course of 8 hours.
The only thing I've noticed differently is that Chrome is starting to use battery which is odd because I rarely use Chrome to begin with.
Any ideas to help this? What should I do?

i second that problem about Chrome. I think it is a bug regarding the builtin flash code. my battery was great until i installed Chrome then it got really bad. I uninstalled Chrome and my battery life jumped up big time. huge different. too bad i really like Chrome but no go right now
Not sure if it's the same issue, but I had some problems with battery life in Chrome until I disabled Tilt Scrolling under Developer Options in the Chrome menu.
my battery life is great even after the update

[Q] Android OS Battery Drain

In the last few days, I have noticed that the process "Android OS" has been using maximum battery life (about 16-35%) and has also been consuming large amounts of data.
The only thing I have done recently is allow the facebook app to upload all pics from my mobile.
Any connection? FYI, I have not added a Samsung account.
Apologies if this has been answered earlier by I did search for it.
what version of android are you running?
what ROM? what kernel?
how long ago did you start to notice this?
is it a constant issue, or does it fix itself after a reboot or something, or with data connection turned off?
do you use google now?
if you are on the jelly bean 4.1.1 version, did you update OTA or odin? just curious, probably not related anyways...
what recovery are you using?
just trying to get some info before i help. many things in the android OS can be directly or indirectly related to each other but still have a side effect on battery life.
16-30% in general has been relatively normal on JB. (Usually between 14-18% is where it settles to)
Keep in mind that unless you are at least halfway through your batt cycle its going to be higher. If you're at 90-95% batt it can be much higher, just due to percentages and battstats being reset.
Not sure why you didn't find anything though, this has been covered a great many times in the past 6 weeks! Did you look at what the top processes are under Android System?

I had installed root66 prerooted JB rom. When I noticed the problem, I installed stock ICS through odin, updated to stock JB then rooted again but the problem continues.
I have been noticing this for about a couple of weeks. Restarting doesnt help but I havent yet tried turning off data. Will try that and let you know.
Yes I use google now.

Is this something peculiar to JB? I didnt see this in ICS. The top processes currently showing in the battery stats are Android OS: 28%, Voice calls: 17%, Screen: 11%, android system: 8%...
Is there anyway to check exactly which app is using the battery and data which is showing as Android OS?

Odd... mine is usually only around 10%
Mine generally sits between 11-14% depending on use. But it can show 30+ if you check it at certain times.
For example, if you've fully charged the battstats will have reset. If you reboot the phone it will kick off the media scanner which can run for a while (this can also be the cause of it heating up for a short time). So once its complete it will have used a rather sizable chunk of the overall battery use. Since it usually doesn't run again, the percentage will steadily drop as other processes use the battery.
I know we aren't really discussing the media scanner, but I use it as an example that is pretty easy to see if you watch it.
Android system has a lot of processes which are listed under its category so depending on how each person uses their device it can vary a bit. Most screenshots of 'normal' reports that I've seen usually are around 14-18%. For me its lower, but I'm pretty sure I don't use mine the same way others do. There are times though where it can go higher for me, depending on what kinds of stuff I'm messing with or testing out.
I believe transferring large amounts of data over mtp is one thing that can cause it to go up...
Hope that makes sense.

my phone just started this last night. i took it off the charger around 11 last night (100% charged) and it woke me up at 3:30 with a low battery indicator, i checked task manager and nothing was open battery stats showed that android os was at i think 38%. i put it on the charger this morning at around 9 am because it had died fully. it's now 1 pm and it's at 95% charged, typically it takes only a couple hours to charge. my phone is fully stock running jb.

What kernel/ROM and version of recovery are you using?
You can track data consumption of Android system apps via Droidstats
You'll be able to know wether it's Google Maps or any other service that uses data
I am fairly confident I've tracked it down to the touch sounds. Sounds dumb I know, but I believe they are wake locking excessively. I have much better results with ANDROID OS drain with them turned off. Interested to see if others do too.

Hey there,
im having a similar issue with my Google Nexus 10 running stock Android 4.2.2 (fresh install of factory image and then manual update with ota update.zip).
Here are two screenshots (didnt want to include here because they are HUGE and I dont know how to resize them in forum "code"):

I havent been using it much the last days and im a little spoiled by an iPad 2 standby time so this is not very acceptable
I'll try Droidstats and see what I can make out of it.

Looks like you haven't used the tab (screen time) that much over the two days, making Android OS seem overtly guilty.
Try disabling touch sounds -- settings-sounds- touch sounds
Then let us know. I am convinced that is the culprit of the wake locks, keeping the Android OS (kernel & drivers) high and eating battery.

EDIT:
Yesterday a friend of mine showed me the battery stats on his Galaxy S2 and had almost 40% "Android OS".... but he has never had better battery life. I start to think that (because of the percentage system) the built in battery tools are almost useless
Is 4 days a normal standby time for the Nexus 10? That would be very bad in my opinion.
I've just started seeing the same thing with my Galaxy S3 (Samsung issued ICS, rooted). Normally the battery will last around 24 hours with light use, but currently it's draining from full to warning level in about 4 hours with the screen mostly off (wi-fi, bluetooth and GPS are off at the moment). Touch sounds have been set to off from day one.
Yesterday, the culprit looked to be Beautiful Widgets (around 38%) so I turned some of that off (weather update animations, etc) but I'm still getting the same drain speed - now showing Android OS 26%, Cell standby 22%, Android System 15%, Screen 11%. Not sure if I trust the results though, the BW issue from yesterday could have been a red-herring.

The tab yesterday got from 30% to complete 0% with everything off (aeroplane mode, sync off etc.) just laying on the desk.
In settings its shows that battery is drained only by Android process.
I was thinking about what might be the cause and just realised that it started to happen just affter purchase of original samsung case for this tab. Is it possible that it had impact on one of the processes? Cause CPU is active almost all the time despite neither app running in the background... Maybe it's due to the magnetic thingy which wakes the screen?

If the magnet is turning the tablet on, the screen would be on, and you can see that even with the cover of the case closed. So if you can see the screen if off, then I would say no, the magnet is not causing your drain problem.
Do you have Skype installed? This is a known battery drain problem on Kitkat as well. Its a bug within Kitkat itself, so maybe that is why its being reported as the Android process, and not one of your apps.
take a screenshot of you battery

Yep, my battery has started playing up. It likes to say it's 21% but then goes to 15, then between 2 and 4 within a couple of minutes. Sometimes runs on 1% for ages. But then dies, I turn it back on and it says 21%
Don't know if is root related. Our if I just need a hard reset. Going to try draining battery fully, then charging to full with device off

I also have never seen such a huge battery drain on any samsung or android device. For once, if you dont need it, go into settings and location services. Just disable it completly with that switch. This reduces the drain a lot, but is still way to high...
For me, it drains about 20% overnight with location on (completly offline) and about 10% without location services.
I have the same problem as well. It will continuously drain from 90-50 in minutes and then 50-15 and so on. 1% sometimes lasts for 30 minutes+ and when I restart it will be 15+% again. I thought it might be because of custom roms so I reset it back to stock many times and same problem. The only apps I have installed are adobe reader and es file manager.

boy, you're digging out a two year old thread!!
if you have such a battery drain you have different (unsatisfying) choices:
1. try battery calibration or other roms
2. throw you tab away + buy a new one
3. buy a new battery
4. accept it (like me)
5. wait until someone brings an awesome new rom which will give an awesome battery life
(sorry for hidden sarcasm but this tablet is just a big disappointment (for me))
I don't think you should throw away devices or buy new batteries without first analyzing what the problem could be. If you are rooted, download an app such as Wakelock Detector and BetterBatteryStats first, make sure there isn't some rogue app or process that is constantly running in the background. Also, if you are running the 8.4 (or perhaps it also works with the 10.1 / 12.1), check out the link in my signature on how to reseat your battery. Many people have found success with all kinds of battery problems.

Nexus 5X battery more than worse!

So..
Recently I've bought my very own Nexus 5X, here over in Europe.
I have been very, very happy with it so far!
I came from a S5 mini, but boy oh boy, I'll never buy a Samsung ever again!
Though, I've recently ran into a major problem! My battery is so, so, so bad!
I could speak of luck when I make it trough 6 hours!
My S5 Mini was even better than this one, and is instead 2200 mAh!
The only thing I do on a day, is check Twitter and visit some Android news pages..
Not even a heavy gamer!
Have I done something wrong? Is this a manufacturing error? Is Google fixing this soon?
Many question, such wow.
I would love to hear from y'all!

Share the screenshots (Power + Volume down for 2 sec) of battery stats and it will help the others to decide who is the culprit. You can see who is using most of the juices in battery stats. Also, in Developer Options, you can see what's running in background from 'Running Services'.
In general, the battery is quite satisfactory.
For me, 5X was getting very poor cellular network reception and it was draining the battery. I choose '2G' from Preferred network type (reboot) and it's improving already.
Sup?
Thanks for replying buddy! It's really awesome to see some support out there!

Android OS 3 %
Android System 3%
Google services 1 %

See the Network reception first. For a clearer view, download this app: Network Signal Info.
And head to this thread and see if anyone else have already answered your query: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/nexus-5x-battery-life-thread-t3229424
Sup?
Network is all good, not really that much problems whatsoever.
I just don't understand why this phone does this to me..
When you look at your battery stats, tap into the "graph" then look at the bottom and see the "awake" line.
It indicates if your phone is "awake" most times or not.
If I constantly use my 5X throughout the day, 6 hours sound about right (this was when I just got the phone and was constantly playing with it).
Now I just use it normally for messages, emails and calls throughout the day with occasional clash of clans and it could last an easy 13 to 14 hours. Just a note though, I do use the app greenify.
If you noticed your phone is constantly "awake" even if when your not using it, then maybe consider turning off the "ambient display" (in display settings) and see if that helps.
Sup?
Thanks for the reply! ^^
My battery is indeed constantly awake, I don't know how though!
It's all normal usage I'm performing, I don't even play any sort of game..
Never heard of Greenify.. Is it like a boost app..?
I did turn off Ambient Display. I have the official Folio case, so Ambient Display is useless anyway.
Umm.. Anyone who have options left?
Because I'm kind of stressing out now..
It's weird your phone is "awake" all the time. Maybe there is bad app installed.
Try using the greenify app and see if it improves the battery.
This app prevents other apps from running in the background.
If this fails, try factory reset and use see it this improves?

One of the apps or services you have running on your device is not letting your phone go to deep sleep or Doze, by the sounds of it.
You can see which apps you have running 24/7 in the background in Developer Options > Running Services. Any of those 3rd party services could be causing your issues as they do not close when you swipe the app away.
You can also check Settings>Memory (sort by max usage at the top right options) to see which apps are using CPU and RAM periodically throughout the day.
To kgen:
I haven't really got the time to test it now, I charged it since the battery almost died..
Greenify doesn't do the trick.. It doesn't detect 1 single app..
To bblzd:
There are not even that many services!
I've aksed those Google product forums as well, told me to try a day in Safe Mode and clear device cache in boot menu.
Just cleaned the cache, off to bed now, and try Safe Mode tomorrow.
I kind of lost all hope man.. I don't know what to do anymore..

You are using Android, more precisely a NEXUS and you are losing hope already!! Unless it has some manufacturer error, it will be solved. Start sharing the screenshots. If you can't post pic, post link. Let the experts go through them.
Best of luck.
Well, yeah..
It's just really frustrating that I finally think I have one of the bestest and purest phones on the market, and it just really isn't somehow..
Booted my phone today into safe mode.
I'm losing battery already! I don't understand!
Cleaning that device doesn't do anything as well..
Let me make some post till I get to 10.
Then we can get started.
See previous post.
See previous previous message.
See previous previous previous post.
Okay, let's get started with evidence now.

Clear cache and data for chrome. It shouldn't drain so much.
Or are you using it for push notifications?
Clear all Facebook and Twitter tabs and see if it helps.
Cleared Chrome like 50+ times already, so that isn't the case.
Nope, I use the apps not the web versions.
Battery now at 46%, unbelievable..
Tap the graph so we can see more usage info like screen on, awake, etc.

Terrible battery life (H815, 6.0 Marshmellow)

Hi all,
I've had my LG G4 since September, and it's been a good phone. However, more so recently, the battery life has been terrible. When Doze decides to work on my phone the battery life is average, but it rarely seems to work. I use over 60% battery in 5 or 6 hours, and that's with most of the time the phone screen being off.
For example, tonight I went to see the new Star Wars film. Using that as a guide, my phone screen was off for about ~3 hours during that time. However, see attached, the battery is just being drained. There aren't any particular apps that I see using 90% battery or whatever - in fact, using a battery app, it looks like phone radio is using an incredible amount.

Any tips for increasing the battery life? I don't see myself as an over user, but I often come out of an 8 hour work shift with just 20% left, and that's with mild web browsing every now and then, and maybe 20 minutes of YouTube video.
I'm thinking about doing a full restore on weekend after backing up my texts, or even ordering a new battery, but I don't feel this should be necessary.
My screen brightness is always 30% or lower. I don't know if this would have damaged the battery, but I use an Aukey quick charger.
-since how many days are using marshmallow ??
-What version ?? V20B or V20A ?
-Did you do a full factory reset after upgrading to MM?

Thanks for replying.
I've been using it for 16 days now.
I updated though LG Bridge, and software info says V20a-EUR-XX
I've not done a factory reset, no. Will that help? All my photos, music and contacts are on Google's servers so I would just need to back up SMS and a list of apps.

Thanks. It looks like my SMS are already saved to my SD card, so hopefully they will work straight away.
I really hope a reset fixes it, as I heard such great things about the LG G4 battery (with people posting it can last 24 hours or more!), and this is very disappointing. I'm off this weekend, so I will do it then.
If anybody else has any fixes as well, I would love to hear them if this doesn't work! The phone is great so far... aside from this.

you have a rogue app or something, there is nothing wrong with Marshmallow 20B (or 20A for that matter) and battery life. I get insane battery life on this phone, often 22 - 30 hours of fairly heavy use.
Now granted, my phone is rooted, bootloader unlocked, running stock 20B and I have installed a couple of apps to optimize it such as AdAway, LBE security, and KinScreen, but still, you have a misbehaving app most likely that needs to be kicked off your phone!
Is there a way of finding which app? Nothing stands out. I've just taken another screenshot (disabling uploads Google Photos didn't fix it)-should screen off be using this much battery?

A reset is definitly in order tomorrow

sure, start with turning on Developer mode by hitting Build Number in rapid succession a bunch of times in Settings ---> About Phone ---->Software Info
then look in the new Developers Options section of Settings and look at Running Services & processes - you can also download an app for this such as Elixir 2
another good diagnostic tool is heat - heat and battery life are proportional, if your phone runs cool, it will get long battery life, if you pick it up and it is warm around the power/volume buttons, then something is amiss - you have a runaway app or process
download a tool like CPU Temp from the Play store and see what the CPU temp is when the phone is idle or you are doing something light like reading an article - it should be in the 78 - 89° F. range (25 - 32° C.) If the phone is not in this temp range, then something is amiss! - Also keep in mind that the main battery drain on the phone in normal operation is the display - keep auto-brightness on, and keep the display off when it is not needed! - also turn off stuff you are not using, such as Bluetooth, NFC, etc.
I did a factory reset as suggested above, and I think it fixed it. I didn't restore my LG backup as I figured that that'd restore the problem, so went through and downloaded apps again. I then left it on overnight.
After 6 hours it was still at 100% on Wifi, which is great! I then used the phone for ~2 hours (apparently pretty heavily) which actually dropped it to 58% - whoops. I then stopped using it again but this time without wifi, and it didn't keep at the same % - it seemed to drop 10% in about 2 hours. The only things I'd changed since then was install Skype (which I might delete if that's the issue), and had it on mobile data.

Could mobile data REALLY make that much of a difference? I think I'll leave it unplugged again tonight and not on wifi, and see what it does. This is an issue though if it is mobile, as I'm often not connected to a network.
Seems like mobile radio active bug, I have the same problem. While mobile data is active, my battery drains with the screen off. I have this issue since v20a and no - factory reset doesnt help at all...
