(REVIEW) QCell X-Life NFC 4200mah Extended Battery AND Honeycomb TPU case - Galaxy S III Accessories

Here's a quick review on the S3 extended battery from QCell. I was a little skeptical about buying it at first because it was so cheap, but I went ahead and got it anyway. It was about $27 shipped from Amazon, which I think is a steal. I'll have links to the battery and a case that fits at the bottom.
I ordered it the 31st and got it the 3rd.
The packaging it comes in is nothing fancy, but everything was bubble wrapped so it was protected fine.
It comes with two covers, both the white and blue (which is definitely a nice plus)
Just to get this out of the way it DOES make your phone twice as thick, but after using it a couple days I don't even notice a difference, it actually feels better to hold while I watch YouTube or surf the web.

Now let's get into the good stuff
This battery is a BEAST. Bottom line.
I'm definitely a power user, I'm on my phone most of the day, lots of texts, a couple calls, YouTube, and a lot of reading.
Here's my usage with the stock 2100mah battery
I usually average around 7-9 hours per charge with 2 1/2 -3hrs of screen time. For the average person the stock battery might be fine, but not for me.
Here's the QCell usage
This battery literally doubles my usage.
Averaging 16 hours and 6 hours of screen on time is enough to get me through a full day and THEN some. I actually had trouble draining it for the conditioning lol.
NFC works great, used it at McDonald's, Jack In The Box and Circle K, all with no problems.
Definitely 5 stars from me.
UPDATE (8-6-12)
Just got the Hyperion Honeycomb TPU case - this thing rocks!
It fits the phone like a glove, feels like it can take a beating, and looks A LOT better in person than the pictures on Amazon make it look.
It's not as grippy as I'd like it to be, but that's my ONLY complaint. I love the honeycomb design by the way. If you buy the Hyperion or QCell extended batteries definitely pick this up as well!
Hope this helps some of you out, and I'll do my best to answer any questions.
BTW I'm running AOKP Jellybean on Ktoonsez kernel.

I just leave it on the charger all night so I haven't really had a chance to time it yet, but the few times I plugged it in I did notice it was a LITTLE slower. I think that's to be expected since it does have double the capacity.

Thank you for the nice review. Would it be safe to assume that both the Hyperion and QCell batteries are pretty much the same?

I also got the same battery. I agree it is a beast. Blue cover is not color match to phone, but 2 tone does not look bad. Charge time is longer. Blue case did not snap in on one side. A little heat to bend in the middle solved that. I also ordered the TPU case, will comment after I get it.
So far seems like a great deal for $20

I couldn't say for sure, but I've read a lot of reviews on the Hyperion and they're getting similar usage times as me.

I actually just started conditioning my Hyperion battery and for my SGS3 my 1st & 2nd days of usage I abused the **** out of it, sooooooooo much so that on the second day I was on my phone for 8 hrs straight, youtubing, texting, emailing, on XDA, web surfing and plenty more... For a straight 8 hrs, have me a migraine and pissed off my wife. LOL After all of that, I averaged something like 16+hrs before reaching 13 percent battery left. One more thing that I did notice, it actually, believe it or not, takes me LESS time to charge my extended battery than it does the OEM one that comes with the phone... That really blew be away.
So in closing, take it from a friendly member who is also a HEAVY USER... This battery is definitely worth the $22 !!!
Also want to add that they made this phone so thin to begin with, that the phone DOES indeed actually feel BETTER in my hand (much like many others have stated) with the added thickness this extended battery provides.

If I get an extended battery, will prob be this one due to the fact it comes with both color covers. -I have white, wife has blue, so we can switch if one of us needs it more than the other that day.

hows the tpu case for it do you think it could handle a pretty good drop?

How does the case hold up after being in you pocket for a while? Do the sides start to peel off or get stretched out.

any problems plugging USB or anything in? Between the extended battery and the additional case, hoping they thought it through (and sure we would have heard about it if it didn't, but gotta make sure!)

ive been looking at these cases since they are the only ones for extended batteries.
2 things bother me tho. not sure if TPU is good for drop protection (which is the main reason for me wanting a case) and whats the deal with the corner with the hole in it lol.
i already have some extended batteries and backs but they dont fit this TPU case, so id have to buy the battery kit and the the case too... grrr.... curse me and my need for a extended batt. its creating all kinds of problems. :crying:

your test is inconclusive, too much vairable in play and you had wifi on...i can last 1 day + with strictly wifi usage.

Seidio 1750mah Incredible battery

So I purchased the Seidio 1750mah battery for my Incredible, which is the same physical size as the stock Incredible battery.
My new T-Bolt will arrive tomorrow (YAY!!!).
Seidio sells a 1750mah battery for the T-Bolt as well, which looks the same as mine but has a different model number.
Does anyone know if my 1750mah battery I bought for my Incredible will work with my T-bolt?
Thanks in advance!!!
No it wont...different size
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
As mentioned, no. The Bolt shares a battery size with the myTouch 4G and the Rezound. Not the incredible.
Rabble rabble rabble.
Well doesn't that just blow goats.
Oh well.
Thanks for the info!
You may want to check out a Rezound battery as another option -- there's a thread in the General sub-forum... VZW has/had them for $20. I think they are listed as 1620mah, but people seem to be getting better-than-expected results.

I will do that. Thanks!
I am going back and forth on the Trident Electra case with included 2600mah battery. It seems great, but I am coming from an Incredible, so even the naked Thunderbolt is going to seem large. Adding a case like that might just make it over the top for me.
I will definitely check out the 1620mah Rezound battery. If I can use that with a normal case, it might be the answer I'm looking for.
What is the stock Tbolt battery? 1400?
Yeah I think it's 1400. I just gone one -- it seems better, but I was getting decent battery life on the stock battery too. I would say it's probably at least 15% better though I was in the same boat -- I really didn't want to make the TB any thicker. I haven't even used a case on it for the same reason.

I came from the original Android phone the G1 going up to the Thunderbolt. I must say that the Trident Electra case is great and a well needed addition to the already large Thunderbolt. It doesnt make it feel overly large. Instead it fits the hand like a good phone should. It also makes shouldering the phone alot easier and Im not afraid to drop it. I would recommend ripping the crappy plastic screen protector.

Well, now that I have wifi at work (I already had it at home), my phone is really only on 3G/4G when I am driving to work and back home ( a 45minute drive) and when we are out doing stuff. So honestly the stock battery is holding up so far pretty nicely.
Plus my custom car rig charges the phone (which is necessary because when I am driving, slacker radio is playing). And I have a charger on my desk at work too.
I will see how it goes, but so far I think the stock battery is doing ok.
If I keep the stock battery or go with the Rezound battery, I think I am going to use this case:

I think the Trident Electra is going to be just too large for me.
My thunderbolt fills up my jeans pocket as it is, and I've seen pictures of it next to the naked thunderbollt and it does add a lot of bulk.
I'm glad it works well for you, but I think it would be just too bulky for me.
I've got to have a case because it's not a question of "will I drop my phone?" but rather "when will I drop my phone?" lol
But I want that case to be as thin as possible and still do a decent job of protecting my phone. I think the Case-Mate Pop does just that.
I have the extended HTC 2700 battery for my Thunderbolt and still like the stock size feel to the phone. I just ordered the Seidio 1750 battery from Amazon. The battery fits the Thunderbolt and the MyTouch 4g. I also have the MyTouch phone and know this as fact. I think the increase of 350 will help the Thunderbolt over the fine edge to push it thru the day. I paid 39.00 for the battery.
PS I also ordered the Rezound battery from Verizon on sale for 1/2 price. Lists for 39.00 and paid 19.00. I think it is specked out for 1650. Why the hell didn't the Thunderbolt come stock with this battery to begin with. Just doesn't make any sense at all.

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm guessing the new batteries weren't ready in time, despite all the Thunderbolt's delays. Maybe they did have them, but had problems at the time. Either way, battery life was probably the biggest complaint about the TB, so it definitely would've helped.

Seido is notorious for overstating battery capacity. I would bet their 1750mah is actually no more than the stock 1400mah.

Well, on the Incredible version of the Seidio 1750 someone had done a lot of tests and compared it to the stock battery, and they came up with it is actually closer to 1600, which is not 1750 as advertised, but still better than the stock battery, which is why I bought the 1750 for my Incredible even though I knew it wasn't actually 1750mah. I would imagine the same is true for the 1750 thunderbolt battery. Which is why I ordered the Rezound battery friday, because it and the Seidio are about equal, but the Rezound battery is cheaper. I didn't get it for $20 like a lot of people, but I got it for $30, which isn't too bad.
After reading up on that Case-Mate cover, I read a lot of reviews that say the rubber sides, get warped after a while. So I bought the Incipio Silicrylic instead, which got much better reviews. Anyone used that one?
I also have a TB. used the case mate pop shown on the first page. it was a great case. I NEVER drop my phones and treat them like my babies. I recently bought the case mate "Barely there" and it is fantastic! it is literally basically there. I got the dark chrome, which really doesn't look like chrome. Its more of a shiny charcoal. if you are careful with your phones like I am i would highly recomment it!
http://www.accessorygeeks.com/oem-c...rely-there-case-cm013486-metallic-silver.html
I also went from a incredible (with 2 stock batteries and 2 1900mah batteries as well as a wall charger) to the tbolt and i got it with a chinese 3200 (that lasts about the same as stock, but is 2x as thick), first thing i bought is a seperate wall charger for the battery as i use my phone pretty heavily (lots of web browsing and texting) and i got about 5 hrs out of the stock battery and maybe six out of the 3200.
I got a rezound battery on sale, and now can get typically about 7-8 hrs depending on level of use. makes me miss the 26 hrs i could get out of my 1900mah battery on the incredible.
I still end up charging my phone typically or swapping a battery daily, but I love my thunderbolt (currently running everything but 4g on cricket wireless including talk and web at same time)

[Review] Mugen Power 3900mAh Extended Battery

So I went ahead and ordered a Mugen Power 3900mAh Extended Battery HLI-T989XL and received it yesterday. I am on the road most days and having to worry about battery life is not a gripe I need. The option of carrying an extra battery around turns me off mainly because;
• It's one more thing I will have to do everyday...charge it
• I'd need to buy a separate charger
• I don't want to swap batteries near the end of the day, seems pointless
• Remember where I leave it, remember to charge it, remember to bring it to work. I don't want to remember more stuff than I have to; I can't remember what I ate yesterday.
I have to say that I am impressed with this battery and battery door with kickstand. As great as having a thin phone is, I have already dropped or had it slip out of my hands a few times. You can see in the photo where it got dented near the mic. The chrome trim around the phone and it's form factor on cool mornings had me really concerned about dropping it again and again as it was quick to slip around. I find that the phone is much more comfortable in my hand now with the added surface to hold...even if my phone does look like it ate an iPhone for breakfast. I measured and the phone grew in thickness from 11mm to 16mm after adding the battery and case from Mugen Power. I read about peoples complaints that it makes the phone way to big etc...then turn around and buy a bulky-ass case to tote it around in and it's just a big. Cracks me up. I digress; the bit of added weight was less than I anticipated and it feels really snug in my grip. Perhaps the weight difference isn't as profound because I am already used to the small weight bump from the Galaxy Nexus extended 2100mAh battery I have been running in it (that fits after sanding it down a bit LOL).
As far as usage? I charged it for 12 hours and started using it at 09:00 today. At 22:00 I still had 35% left and I am so happy. Usually I need to plug it in around 17:00 or 18:00. After charging it for 12h the following 4 nights I should start to see even better longevity according to the paperwork I got with it. I was reluctant to buy the Seido brand extended battery because they always were poor performer when I used their Blackberry batteries in the past. Also because they made it look clunky and awkward-out of place on the phone. This one from Mugen looks like it could be an stock product because it flows well and I like the look of it. With this, I am confident I won't have to decide if I want to play a game or watch a video and if I will have enough power to get through the day.
I am very happy with this product but I have to mention something strange that I noticed. After installing this battery the phone began to freeze and lag like crazy. Sometimes it would not wake when the screen shut off either. Pissed me off I tell you. I thought what the hell could be causing this?? I am running Jugs 5 with Gideons -75 UV script. Hmm..battery....undervolting...I thought about it and I thought let me try flashing the other -50UV script and see what happens. Problem solved! Very weird but true. Something about this battery caused this but I have no clue how.
Lastly, I am spring clip guy; I buy them for all my phones but there are not much options for this model FFS. Anyways, the phone I replaced was a HTC Desire HD/Inspire. I had the Seidio 'Surface' (adds 1mm to exterior of phone) spring clip holster lying around and go figure-the G2SX fits pretty good with the extended battery The only thing is putting it back in is a two-handed deal as the top clip comes down too much since the HTC is a smaller phone. Just gotta lift it a bit and pop the phone in until I get me a new holster. Getting back to options, some may be aware that the TMO GSII/G2SX only have Seidio's 'Active' case and spring clip holster available right? See the way I figure it is if the active case adds 2mm+ to the exterior of the phone it should fit with this extended battery for sure with no case on it. I will post my findings after it arrives.
Stock 11mm thick, Extended battery 16mm thick. Here are the shots:

I am not getting 'a couple of more hours' out of it. Maybe I didn't make this clear in the OP but in my epic saga to find a ROM that is lean and has 'great' battery life I have always been less than happy. Blackberry surpasses Android/iPhone in this department IMO and I miss that. I always needed to mind my usage and make sure I didn't have too much fun, use auto dimmer and disable this and turn off that...I have important things to deal with everyday and my phone should just 'work' for me and not against me.
After conditioning the battery as directed for a week and since posting this thread I am now at the point where I can talk like a school girl for hours, watch video, keep screen brightness at 100% 100% of the time, BT and WIFI always on and still have at least 25% battery left at around 8pm. This is unplugging the phone regularly between 06:00-07:00 every morning. I also have all the vibe sliders on full and my phone vibes and rings when I receive calls. I don't need to check for apps killing battery because it doesn't matter anymore. I honestly think I get better than double phone usage now over stock. I was happy to pay the price and I would buy it again if I needed to. I love not needing to plug it in the car charger here and there to weasel in some extra juice anymore throughout he day too.
BTW IMO, $100 is not what it used to be anyways. A tank of fuel for my truck is that much. Be thirsty my friends.
He has almost doubled his battery life if you do the math. It is a bit of a beast though. If I was in a similar situation as you I would totally get this, as it is my phone lasts all day usually.
I thought I would update everyone who seeks a spring clip holster compatible with our phones (seidio does not make them). The HLHTHLDASC from seidioonline.com fits this phone perfectly with the Mugen extended battery. The only mod I had to make was to warm up the two tabs that keep the bottom of the phone in the holster with a blow dryer. Then just insert the phone while still warm and it will take the shape of the battery cover. Works great even with the standard battery and door. Obviously this is for bare phones with no cover on them.
Fits a lot better than the HTC Desire/Inspire holster pictured in the OP.
In case anyone cares the holster I found that fits the Mugen Battery is this one for the HTC Vivid LOL:

Wow Lol did you happen to just try the holster or did you just buy it in hopes it'll fit. That holster is still 30$!

I looked online at the sizes of various phones specs and guessed it would fit. I wasn't sure it would fit but pretty sure. Worked out well.

Review Review Review:
Looks:
To be honest, I was prepared to be surprised to see the bulk of the 6000mah mugen battery. However, i was stunned when I opened the package. IT LOOOKED HUGE! After removing it from its packaging, it still felt heavy and large, which was when i started to doubt whether or not I would be able to use this daily. However, after placing it upon my phone and just getting the feel of it for a while, it really isnt that bad. It add heft to the hox, which for me is a great thing as the hox was really just too light for my comfort. Also, it adds protection on the sides and back. AND, you can rest assured that when ur phone falls, 99% of the time, it will land on the case, rather than the screen. The matte finish on the case is absolutely gorgeous, and really attracts no fingerprints at all. It also adds some grip to it which decrease the chance of you dropping your phone. I was kind of surprised it Mugen didnt include their kickstand in this case, which is something I was glad of, as their previous kickstands were flimsy and of lesser quality.
Build Quality
The case is really sturdy. I usually just stuff it into my backpack when i dont use it, and everytime I take it out, there really isnt any lint or any dirty stuff on the case. However, this doesnt mean it's scratch resistant. My review unit has obtained some seriously visible scratches on the back due to placing it on the table and sliding it around during usage. No complaint there though, as it did what it was meant to do, and the white colour really hides the scratches pretty well. I have dropped the case several times into concrete, with it surviving each fall with just a minor scratches on the sides. The pogo pins are well protected by the sides of the case so as to not take a hit when the case falls.
Usage:
Don't let the thickness of the case fool you. It still allows all proper usage of the phones buttons with no hinderance whatsoever when the case is attached to my phone. I had no problems reaching for buttons or plugging in headphones. AlSO, IT FITS IN YOUR PANTS. and fits quite well to be honest. I dont wear skinny jeans if that makes a difference, but the phone feels just a tad thicker than without the battery case. Actually, if you had an otterbox, the case pretty much feels like an otterbox in your pocket minus the hard to slide out part as this battery case is smooth as butter when you try to slide it out. The speaker hole is well cut and there is no volume loss in sound produced which is a plus, whilst the camera has a very well-thought and clean cut hole so as to not block the great capabilities of the 8MP camera on the back. The pogo pins line up perfectly with the phone, and is very easy to install. You simply snap the phone in from either direction, and you can feel the case fitting snuggly onto the phone. Then, with a turn of a on-off button, the charging begins.
Performance:
I personally am really satisfied with what this case enable me to do. I charged it full along with my phone before the day of a 2 day camp trip. Over the course of 2 days, I had the case on my phone 24/7, for both protection and to maintain a charge. I turned the case on when my battery reached 70%, and kept it on until it died on me with my phone at full charge. I survived the 48 hours with 60% still remaining on my phone, whilst the battery status showed 48 hours of use along with 8 hours screen - on time, with a lot of them been camera and video shots as well as some surfing here and there. There really isnt anything else I can want from this case. With normal use, I could probably survive at least 4 days with this monster. GREAT JOB THERE mugen.
One little rant. The battery indicator on the back goes berserk on me every once in a while, flashing red or not flashing at all when i was trying to charge the case. Also, not all charging lights on the back are meant to display battery stats as one of it is dedicated to a red signal light to indicate the case is charging. Average charge times of the case ranged between 5-8 hours, so i am usually face to face with a fully charged case if plugging in to charge before sleep.
SO, it you are planning to keep you hox for a while, and is not satisfied with your battery life, Mugen Power's 6000mah battery really is the way to go as they produce one of the best quality batteries on the market with proper customer support. One downside however, is that you have to overcome that steep price.
BTW, NO ONE SAID I LOOKED WEIRD HOLDING THE PHONE WITH THE CASE UP TO MY EAR...it looks quite normal actually. But..my friends who picked it up always did one thing: swing it like a brick

Well i received my 3200mah Mugen case today.....3 hours on charge with just the case until the red charging light went out then a charge test with my one-x on 4%:

60 mins = 19%
90 mins = 27%
120 mins =
150 mins = 42%
180 mins = 50% (case down to one blue power light)
210 mins = 56%
240 mins = 63%
260 mins = 65% (case stopped charging - flat)
EDIT: Second test 16/10/12:

60 mins = 19%
90 mins = 22% (case down to 2 blue power light)

210 mins = 46%
240 mins = 54%
260 mins = 57% (case stopped charging - flat)

So far with my 6000 mugen, I am getting nearly two charges. I think it will get better once i condition it. So basically from around 5-9% charge, I can charge the phone full once and on the second time i got it upto 75%. But i did use the phone while it was charging, so its not like it was kept overnight for charge. So I would say you can charge it twice if u r not using the phone while charging. Once I get some screen shot evidence, I will post it.
Pros:
1. Nearly two times charging.
2. the back is protected
3. The phone feels much better and lighter when you take it out of the battery case
I did find some cons:
1. There seems to be a drop in wi-fi signal strength if you are holding the phone in certain ways.
2. The camera flash gets a bit blocked.
3. attracts my 1 year old nephew to press the button which illuminates blue lights to show charge level
Thank god. Hopefully it actually delivers close to the listed battery capacity. Looks pretty slim also.
Oh wait this was already posted in the other thread. There already is an eBay link. May order one.

a bit late to the party champ, if you posted it on the case with batteries thread you would have seen its already on ebay for $20 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2200mAh-External-Backup-Battery-Charger-Power-Bank-Case-For-HTC-One-X-Black-/150832551334?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item231e5215a6
why did you think it would be more expensive?
Hey this link shows the phone and the white version so thanks for posting. Id really like to see this in a tpu case, but im happy we at least have an option now.
Wow, this looks cool.
I wonder how the case actually feels, like if it feels like premium quality stuff or cheap plastic.
It's a good idea though, is it permenantly under drain or does it only work when the HOX battery is 'dead'?
Battery level LEDs are sweet!

Mophie releasing Galaxy S3 Juicepack

http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/31/mophie-galaxy-s-iii-juice-pack/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter
As the title says, they say it will be released "very soon".
I doubt I would get one myself, but it is very welcome to see some of the iPhone only companies showing the Galaxy S3 some love. Wonder who will be next?
I for one is very excited for this

If it comes out I'll buy it, not holding my breath cause Apple will force them to not make it by suing them lol
Judging by Mophie's history, this will cost more than $80. For that price, you can get a nice case, and a separate battery.

I'd gladly pay that price for a quality case and charger. I've had a juice pack for my ip4s and it was worth every penny, Imo. Also I don't like the concept of a bigger battery. I rather have a removable battery pack than a huge battery. I'm sure other people feel the same way.

Food for thought on that... the idea of a slimmer, trimmer phone should lead you away from the juice pack. Far away.
You can get a 4500 and larger battery/cover for $25, you could have two on standby along with two external chargers and two stock-size 2200 batteries (one for home, one for the desk at work) for a total price less than this.
But price isn't even my argument.
This juice pack is easily removable.
So are our stock batteries.
But in terms of size, the juice pack makes the phone longer (due to the usb plug) , and thicker too:
The extended battery is just a thicker battery with a bumped out case.
This thing makes you layer up:
- Your stock battery
- Stock battery door
- Some gap (no matter how small) since this is an add-on
- this product's back panel
- this product's battery
- this product's outer shell
Phew!
That is only the formula for a LOT more extra bulk, whether you measure it in terms of length, thickness, or weight.
Swapping in an extended battery when you need one is WAY less bulky.
Or, just having a couple extra stock-thickness batteries around if you need to go camping or whatever. That's what I do... That's zero bulk, gives you extra chargers (for the office and home, or whatever), AND costs way less than this. Win/win/win.

I see your point.
I don't work in an office so I'm not around a charger all day. Also the idea of carrying extra batteries around is just to bothersome for me. Not to mention the chore of charging them every single day.
I guess it's just personal preference then. I'd rather have a battery pack than a larger battery.

Its not that bad. I have 2 spares in my back pocket or in my wallet and its no hassle. Plus I got two wall chargers for the battery which makes it easy to charger. Again it does add more to the phone. You're paying $80 for it. That's expensive. For $80 you might as well get the Mugen extended battery or get two of those 4000mAh batteries we seen here and get one of those extended batteries case. But everyone has their own style. I'd rather carry two spare batteries in my wallet or back pocket and keep the phone slim or with a stylish case

I disagree. On my business trips I don't have the time or desire to fiddle with my phone for juice. Not to mention it's 1 more thing to keep track of.....
no thanks. give me a 3100mAh battery with a stock looking cover. It' won't make the phone look huge, and it'll give 2day battery for most people.
I'm not with the majority on this one ... give me a 4500mah extended battery AND a mophie juice pack.
The longer I am free from the power company umbilical cord, the better ...

Hey guys.
I bought a similar thing to a mophie
It is essentially a Chinese no name brand of a mophie.
It is rated for 5v and 3200mAh
It's getting a tad bit warm... Should I be concerned?
It's only a few days old and the guy I bought it from at the mall said I could return it if I had any problems
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
No, that is normal.
I actually have three of these and they all generate heat as charge is transferred from the pack to the phone's battery.

$80 is too high!
Additional, accoding to the juice pack of iphone, the capacity can not exceed 3000mah ( always 1900mah -2200mah) to keep the the phone not too bulk.
This price can not only get s high quality nice case, but also a high capacity universal charger.

Got a link to what you bought?
I saw this today at a Best Buy show. Rep said availability was "a few weeks" and pricing was $99. This was a real, functioning unit. It was thicker than my Otterbox Commuter case but manageable. Seemed like a quality piece, felt well-made. The top easily comes off for phone removal.
side view... This thing reminded me of the feel of the Otterbox Defender in terms of size. It was substantial, but has its benefits..
Any idea what's going on with this?

[Accessories][MOD]Sprint Epic Touch 4g- Otterbox - WITH The Extended Battery+Case

MOD FOR OTTERBOX-- This thread i created to let you guys in on what I did when i decided to get an extended battery and back plate. But didn't wanna lose my OtterBox I had paid $50 for. So I Moded 1 part of the case to accommodate the extended battery while still using the Otterbox itself.
Now I know there is another thread in the GS2 and Note Threads about Mods similar to this. But none in the Epic forum. So don't comment badly.
Now Ill show you what I'm talking about.

extended battery and case, I had bought 2 different kinds.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009QT9JH6/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The first one I bought is 3800 Mah with back cover on amazon for $4.75 + shipping (yea, thats U.S) So obviously , going by the phrase "you get what you pay for"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008GMH4JY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I bought another, slightly more expensive 3500 Mah $14.99 + shipping
Now.. not all the extended back covers will work with the OtterBox. some are too wide. I as shown in the pucture is the back cover from the 14.99 model. Mind you both exetended batteries fit with this back (even the 3800, with the 3500 case) so i can swap them out.
Charging-
Method 1- I put the battery in the phone with the power OFF. and let it charge , eventually the blue led indicated a full charge. I left
Ive Charged both batteries two different ways. Going by some of the things i've read, there are many theories on how to "properly" charge a Lithium Ion battery. I'm not going to get into the debate on which way is better as this is not what i created this thread for. it on charge, as ive researched , with graphs and etc. The phone can only recognize stock battery Mah, after the phone senses its full, it goes into trickle charge mode. I left on an additional 2 hours.
Method 2- I have an external charger i used , left it on charge for 8 hours. It was an older charger i had moded. (dont need you guys starting fires or destroying batts etc.. lol
Both methods worked equally well. But i prefer the external charger, (leaves my phone free to use and its just as easy to swap batteries.)
Now On with the OtterBox , I had bought when i purchased the Epic touch 4g.
Understand this could have been done a number of ways I have Construction experience so decided to use a... Utility Knife, these knifes will cut you BADLY!. You can also use a dremel tool, if you have access to one.
Instructions- -
-
I lined up the bottom of the otter box case with the extended case, while it was on the phone (to ensure it lined up correctly)
Then I scribed , all four sides. carefully, but It took me a while. Would have been better with dremmel tool. Or even a cordless drill to drill as starter hole in each corner, of the main hole i was Instructions- cutting out. I did manage to get it cut out. Mind you that was the hard part. getting the initial square cut out, physically out. lol. After that it was a non stop , as i came to call it "Try it, shave it" technique. If it wouldnt fit, id take the knife and shave down the side i wanted to "shave down" kinda like peeling a potato , then refit. I didnt want the case to fit loosely, but didnt want to have to fight to get it on either. so i got it to a happy medium.
In conclusion , I LOVE the extended battery life, with the stock OtterBox look, i can get double the battery time! and keeping the protection of my phone is number 1, espicially in my workplace. I hope some of you with an otterbox who was thinking about the extended battery but was thinking that it wasnt an opton, can think different now. thanks - Goddly

Again. Were not talking idle. I was testing tweak packages. Testing Roms. Testing themes. Those sharp drops . Was me going to recovery. Making backup. And flashing packages. 2nd drop was a restore.. all in all I recommend an extended battery.
This is with my ComaDose mod on a regular day or should I say days
That's awesome man! I might look into doing something like this! I don't have the Otterbox, but I have the Trident Kraken. I might apply the same concept to it to get it to work. Great job!
great post, don't know why i never thought to mod a case so that the extended batteries would be more attractive!

Yessir.
I can do it fairly easily, but youd have to give an otterbox, + the extended battery case, depending on which case (extended back plate) though if you buy the ones ive posted, id just need the otterbox and can use mine as a guide..

Only problem I'm having with mine is the power button is WAY too sensitive. Sometimes I have it (phone) in a belt pouch and if I'm sitting wrong it'll reboot itself (no doubt the power button is being held down). Aside from cutting out the button piece from the Otterbox (and leaving the depression where the actual button on the phone is) I can't think of what else might help to reduce or eliminate the issue.
Which version Otterbox did you use for this?
I have an extra case or two of the Defender series that I could carve up (I have killed two belt clips), and I am wondering whether the rubber exterior goes over the modded inner cover comfortably.

I can't wait to try this out...I bought one ot the 3800mAh batteries and just need to make time to carve out the back plate. I was concerned that my defender would become junk with this new battery.
Hey goddly, what ROM was you using and how did you adjust your tweaks?
