Apex's new beta has been rewritten around Jelly Bean and looks just like stock. I have been waiting for this since release as Nova & Apex just did not look right on the Nexus 7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452663
Thanks for sharing this. I was holding off on using it for these reasons.
I've been using Apex since about a week after I got my N7 and as silly as it sounds, I'm glad they finally added the feature of the widgets and icons moving out of the way and auto-resizing when you're adding a widget/icon to the homescreen. Makes my life so much easier lol

I can't stand the new apex beta, it has the enormous dock bar like stock JB and even when you hide it and also hide the draw line, whenever you exit an app or app drawer sometimes the draw line returns. It's probably a beta bug but I prefer to have my app drawer button and search buttons the way apex 1.2.5 has it.
ya same as above, i went back to 1.2.5 because i prefer the "tablet" mode.
Has apex added the issue to stay in "phone mode" yet, I found that it switched to tablet UI (where as nova doesn't) so had to use Nova on the N7

I use tablet mode anyway. App tray and search at the top. Margin set to none. 8x7 layout. Feels great.

Just tried Apex, not nearly as good as GO IMO. I can't get Multi-Picture Live WP working with it. Have 5 screens set in both, but scrolls to a blank screen on each side of home, then to screen #2 and #4 (that should be #1 and #5). Transitions aren't as good (or at least not as many choices). Can't seem to set number of rows and columns in the app drawer. Sticking with GO.

Every launcher requires a different workaround for multipicture wallpaper. Either "ICS fix" or "disable vertical movement" will work.
The ICS fix works (the other doesn't). After playing with it a while, I still went back to GO. The app icons (like N7 Player Widget) end up smaller on Apex than GO, and they are smallish on GO. GO also has more transitions I like. Both are smooth, so I didn't really see any benefit switching.

New home launcher ADW EX. Its just adw with a few more customizations. It's on the market.
Anyone using it yet? I just bought it and its amazing! Everybody post pics of your launcher and show off your personal taste!
If you experience any stutter or freeze issue its probably a memory leak caused by one of your widgets, a quick adw reset will fix it. Just go to the menu scroll down and adw reset.
Anybody with suggestions should email the dev from the market place. He replies quite quick and is open to suggestions.

just finished playing around with it for a bit and all i gotta say is...wow. animations switching screens are so sleek and dont lag at all on my CM6.1.1. no FC's or anything. loving it so far. havent defaulted it yet, still trying to see if i truly want it as my default. only thing i wish it had right now is swipe gestures for each dockbar icon (not just the main swipe up/swipe down gestures) because on launcher pro i have 5 different gestures, particularly: quick compose for chomp and screen off and lock because i'd rather quickly swipe up than long press the search button. unfortunately i can't do that to the dockbar in ADW but instead i've made the single swipe up gesture for screen off and lock, and long press search as quick compose. also in launcherpro i had a swipe gesture for battery use shortcut in settings and in ADW i just decided to make a shortcut for it on the desktop. also miss the launcherpro facebook widget but i can live without it.
in conclusion, this launcher is absolutely amazing so far, battery drained pretty quickly but i can't tell if thats just cuz i was literally messing around with it constantly, even to the point where i would just play around with the screen transition animation for days haha or if its actually a battery drainer. i guess we'll see if it really drains a lot of battery tomorrow, assuming i can show some self control with playing with the screen animations

For those of you interested, if you are upgrading from the "old" ADW, you can restore your old settings by backing up the current launcher and settings config, an use Astro or any explorer to rename adw_settings.xml and adw_launcher.db to adw_EX_settings.xml and adw_EX_launcher.db. Next you can import them in ADW Ex. Both files are in the root of the SD card. At least saves the trouble to figure out again what your original settings were and background etc...
I am a bit dissapointed that such a popular launcher doesn't recognise you were running a previous version and offers the option to import old settings on first startup. Still it is the best launcher IMHO. The new transition effects are cool!

ADW ex is very nice but settings are not very intuitive and are not very user friendly. Now, of course, this a first release and I'm sure things will be cleaned up in updates. Launcher should not hijack "Settings" shortcutin the menu neither.

You can still set the app drawer background to transparent, it just won't work with Vertical 4D app drawer style.
Just set the background color bar all the way to the left.

I don't use themes so I'm not sure if or how they affect settings. Did you try ADW Settings > UI Settings > Drawer Settings > Background color - slide the slider all the way to the left. (a bit late as EuroSpeed beat me to it. This is what happens when I answer a phone call in the middle of replying and get distracted)
My First impression
I got this last night and so far I like it very much. The "vertical old" App drawer style is much snappier. It doesn't lag like the ADW built in to CM 6.1.1 even though I have the background transparent and my live wallpaper running just as I did on the built in version. There are some things that I don't like such as the fact that it has removed the phone settings from the menu button and placed them under the ADW settings. Also, I have the Home button binding set to: Move to default desktop/show previews. If you start at the default desktop, go to settings and press the home button to return home it automatically goes to the previews instead of the default desktop and then the previews. Not a big deal but slightly annoying- I'm sure it will be addressed in an update. Overall, I really like this.

Was reading this thread:

Not sure if it is just the "newness" but i am going to stick with it for a bit and see. Really like the approach except would like to see a horizontal and vertical options for the home screen. I would definitely recommend people to give it a shot.

OK, my mind is now officially blown. Lightning Launcher has turned my Android world upside-down.
With Froyo and GB, I happily used LauncherPro - Had to have my scrolling dock and nothing else really mattered. On CM9, I experimented with Zeam (my favorite dock--smooth scroll instead of paged) and Nova (really nice-lots of options-but IMHO the dock wasn't as good as Zeam) and Go (blecch-too many links to commercial sites for me). I'm now on CM10 and tried Trebuchet (blah), Apex (really nice-a lot like Nova) and was using Zeam, then Holo HD (nice-a lot like Nova and Apex). I still missed the smooth-scrolling, scaled-down icons in the Zeam dock, though.
Today, I went on a quest for the "perfect" launcher and ran across a really good thread on the Experia S forum that lays-out all the launcher options -->here
For no particular reason, I decided to try Lightning. Holy #@$%! It is sooo different from the rest (and no dock either, but I'll see if I can do without it). It's a whole new way of approaching launchers - no pages, no grid if you don't want it, no sizing limitations, free rotation of elements, just one big zoomable scrolling page. I'm sure there are a lot more options to explore. I just haven't gotten around to it yet. And I CAN put my old favorite widgets on there without an additional paid app. The possibilities are seemingly endless. There's a 10 minute video demonstration of Lightning in the Play Store that sucked me into loading and trying it.
Just wanted to share this with all of you fellow Epic users - I now have a new toy that will keep me occupied for hours and hours . Lightning might be cooler than Android, itself.

I just downloaded this and noticed a few things that others may find useful.
First, the any widget addon is free
Second, a dock effect can be achieved by pinning the items you would otherwise place in a dock bar. First, press the home key to center the screen (or you might pin an item off-screen, making it useless). Then long-press to enter editing mode (or menu->customize). Then position your chosen icon where you would like to stay (relative to the physical screen). Then long-press the icon and select customize. From there, go to common item settings and scroll down to the pinned option. Click the ball to turn it green, then check the box. Now the icon will stay in place as you scroll and zoom, just like a dock. The only problem (or feature, depending on perspective) I've found is that pinning an icon at the bottom of the screen in portrait mode will cause it to be off-screen in landscape mode - it will take some experimentation to get things just right. A similar problem exists for the right side of the screen in landscape, causing the icon to be off-screen in portrait. Basically, the position is based on the top left corner, so you could make a dock along either of those sides without issue, as long as they are not longer than the short side of the screen (you'll see what I mean, if my description isn't clear enough)

It is an interesting concept with a lot of potential, but there are still some blatant rough edges... for example, using a wallpaper image or any transparency will cause the icons to streak and leave trails while zooming and panning. It can be considered a neat effect, but basically the screen doesn't truly redraw - each frame is just drawn on top of the existing one, so you need to use a solid color bg at with absolutely no transparency to cover the previous frame and eliminate the trails. I'll be keeping my eye on this launcher though

You can fake a dock:
- Create a folder
- Insert phone, browser etc in it and arrange it
- Keep the center of the screen free from other widgets
- Set folder settings not to close, if an app was startet
Now you have permanently (as long as you don't click on free space of the desktop) a dock in the middle of your screen.
Yes, a dock (even a scrollable one) is very easy to set up = create a panel at the bottom or on the side, add icons (with AllApps icon as menu launcher), pin it. You can have it scrolling sideways like Nova, or up/down, all inside the "dock" panel.
I like Sense but there are some crucial limitations that bother me, like not being able to resize the apps or being able to define the number of rows and columns. I´ve installed Go Launcher but I´ve realized it doesn´t use the entire screen because it wasn´t probably designed for such large screens...or for such a large resolution. Either way, I was wondering if there are any launchers out there that can address this.
Try Nova Launcher. Lots of options esp if you use the Prime (paid) version.

Been using LauncherPro Plus on DHD and think it is the best launcher for Android 2.X. However, it has not been updated for over 1 year. Still can work with ICS but got issue.
Tried both Apex and Nova for my One X, sounds good but Nova doesn't support overlap widget which limited desktop setting. Apex support overlap widget but didn't got the function to assign long press recent app button to launch the launchkey app (very useful setting for using LeeDroid Rom, Home button was assigned to recent app function, recent app button was assigned to meun and long pess it will launch the launchkey app which bring up quick access to some mostly used shortcut).
Really miss LaunchPro Plus which got all those above function!!!!
For the last two years I have been using ADW Launcher. When it came out at the end of 2010 I paid for ADW_EX. It has been great for me. I have tried to use the TouchWiz on the S3 but there have been two main things that kept me from using it regularly. One was fixed (by an answer in another forum).
The one that was fixed was the ability to have shortcuts to individual files on my home screen. In ADW I was able to create a shortcut with Astro File Manager. For some reason Astro does not have a way to do this with TouchWiz. Then someone pointed out that a long press on a file in ES File Manager would create a shortcut. I use a lot of individual files and that feature was great.
Now the last deal breaker for me is the lack of a 5x5 icon grid. Again, in ADW you can have a choice of icon numbers both horizontally and vertically. While 6 or 7 is too much, I like the choice. 4x4 with that gigantic screen indicator is useless. I use a couple of big widgets on my main screen and there is no room left for the important icons.
Now for the question. Is there any way to create a 5x5 icon grid on stock unrooted touchwiz?
From my point of view, Samsung is copying Apple by limiting the choices and configurability. If we could choose our icons and how they act, it would be a lot less like Apple. Personally, when I try an Apple device, I get frustrated because of the lack of control I have. I don't like someone else making my choices. One last part of my rant: I recently tried Windows 8 on a laptop. It looks like everyone is trying to copy Apple.
All this is because the motion scrolling features and eyeball sensor are TouchWiz only. I would like to move my phone to move icons around. I would like to keep the screen on time short to save battery but still be able to have it stay on when I am reading a long web page.
I'm pretty sure all the TW features stick around even if you use a different launcher. I know smart stay and tap to top work on Nova and those are the only ones I use.
Edit: all the motion features still work on other launchers. I just went through them all. Liberate yourself. I use Nova.
Alternatively, if you are rooted you can find a modded stock launcher. Or even flash a more heavily modded rom. This is where Android shines anyway. Not because of what the manufacturers allow, but what open source allows!

As much as I want to use Nova Launcher, it's just not as smooth and quick as the stock Pixel Launcher. Anyone else feel this way? At the same time, I have a love/hate relationship with Pixel Launcher because I love having the icon unread notification numbers on Nova as well as being able to change the home screen grid size. In the end, though, Nova is just not as quick loading apps and the app drawer.
I agree Google isn't making it easy to use another launcher on Pixel phones. It's a shame.
Nova is definitely not as smooth as the Pixel launcher. But Nova has so many advantages for me that I'll take its options over overall smoothness any day.

U guys can use one plus launcher, one UI launcher and a custom pixel launcher as well with More customizations. There's a thread on telegram.
Action Launcher does pretty much everything Nova can do and it does everything stock pixel launcher does too. Including copying from recents screen and using Android 10 gestures.
Launchers can add the ability to work correctly on Pixels, Google opened up the ability for 3rd party launchers in December, Action Launcher is only one I know of that can do it without using quickstep or magisk.

I keep seeing these threads where at least one person claims Nova doesn't work correctly. Last year, I would have agreed... but I've been using Nova for months and I have forgotten about any drawbacks if there are any. The only differences I remember are a couple animations and the recents menu doesn't have suggestion icons? (which never suggested apps I wanted to use, so I don't miss it)
What's the smoothness that people are complaining about? The animations run as fast as my finger pushes things around... Is it just the quality and type of animations? If so, I want functionality far over such things. Having to use substratum/magisk to customize the Pixel Launcher was way worse than recreating my layout in Nova. If only things like TeslaUnread were still officially supported... but Google likes killing off useful things.
Feel free to help me understand what I'm missing.

In my opinion, the warning is wrong. Back when I first got my phone, like half of the gestures didn't quite work. Now everything works for me.
At Nova's homescreen...
Swipe from side: Isn't triggered because you can't go back from home. Just flips pages.
Swipe from bottom: Opens app search. I'm not sure if the gesture is doing this or Nova is.
Swipe from bottom & hold: Opens recents.
Swipe from corner: Shows assistant overlay.
Everything basic works. I don't have palm swipe screenshots enabled.
My issue with Nova is the delay going back to the home screen. I can't immediately open another app. I always have to wait an extra second or click on app twice before it opens. I want the full pixel experience and it seems that Nova doesn't always deliver on it. I do occasionally go back to it until I get annoyed with my first statement.

Honestly, I've never noticed this. I guess I go home before I know what I want to click on and so I'm never quick enough to see it.
The way it's acting, it reminds me of a paused activity that needs to refresh when the app gets restored. I tried to disable battery optimization for Nova, but it didn't help. I'm not sure how to solve that.
I tried the same test on my old phone and pressing the home button actually does nothing for a split second, then Nova shows and responds immediately. But when you gesture, you want it to happen immediately... not a split second later. So in that way, Android 10 and Nova do the sensible thing and shows the paused activity.

Can you provide a link please?
I was using Nova Launche a lot of time ago! let's going to check how does it works now!
I have no reason to use any other launcher than pixel launcher. It works just as I need.
not sure what the hoo-blah is. I have been using Nova prime beta with no issues. No problems returning home... No speed issues. The warning that is in there is talking about the gesture navigation system wide not inside the launcher. So this means you have to use the classic 3 button method to navigate (back, home, recent). IMHO this does not affect the experience at all. Definitely prefer Nova and the customization over the stock launcher. :good:
Edit:Actually just changed the nav settings and Nova is working with new gestures.

I just switched back to Nova from Lawnchair on both my S20+ and Pixel 4XL. Nova works beautiful now and Nova Google Companion works with dark mode.
I'm on Android 11 Beta and am running Nova with no problems with gestures at all. For some reason on 10 they were not working as smooth and I would get some lag going back to the home screen. On 11, those problems have seemed to disappear.
While that's true, the closing app animation is not there and feels weird. ( Using gesture navigation )
