On the piggy website, I'm unclear which kernel is for my incredible?
The kernels meant for the incredible have "-inc-" in their title. I believe the most recent ones end with "-041011".
holy crap there a lot of choices. Any guidance? I don't see anything listing descriptions of anything.
This would likely suit you best:
http://www.ziggy471.com/2011/04/10/beta-kernels-10-apr-11/
Ztest-INC-BFS-HAVS-041011
has brain f*ck scheduler and HAVS for custom voltage set. note this is his latest kernel release but it is also labeled beta. So if you have any weird issues with it you may want to check out an earlier release.
-- As always I have to jam in my favorite kernel (chad's incredikernel) if you haven't tried it out yet then I can only suggest that you do.
Cheers

In going back and forth, I've personally found the performance of Chad's 12/23 kernel and Ziggy's 4/10 kernel virtually indistinguishable. Some devices don't respond well to the hybrid adaptive voltage scaling (HAVS) or the settings he's implemented and will be more stable using static voltage scaling (SVS), which is the standard kernel. IncrediControl works on this Gingerbread kernels so I'm assuming it would work well on his Froyo kernels for adjusting the voltage without a script. Any decent clocking app will handle the speed. But the script guide he has is very useful and might be worth playing with if that's your thing. If you have any questions for him, he's best found at infectedrom.com these days.
Wow thanks! I enjoyed scripting on y Eris so I will look at that
Since i have everyone here, is there a stock rom that has all that blistered removed? I can adb shell and remove the stuff but I was just curious.
And which one is the best?
I'm using CM7.0.3 as my rom and my kernel is the default cyanogen one.
Good enalogy by Xandermpls. Kernels set the boundries of what your processor speed is

And which one is the best for CM 7.0.3?

The built-in CM kernel is really good.
If you're not having issues, there's no need to switch around with kernels. Some different kernels claim better battery life, better performance, etc. but I'd say the buil-in CM7 is really solid as far as stock kernels go.
Its kind of like radios, CPU profiles, etc.. Everyone's got a different one that works "best" for them.
I believe the kernel is like an interface between the hardware with the software, which is why incompatible/development-stage kernels have broken WiFi, bluetooth, etc. It's also why different kernels allow for different CPU controls - voltage, speed, governors, etc. Some kernels also have memory management tweaks, among many other things. I personally stick with the stock CM7 kernel as it has never given me anything but great performance and good battery life, but if I were to try a different AOSP kernel I would only trust pershoots.
So my apologies for asking this question. What i am looking to do though is improve over all experience for my brother with his phone. Ideally and this is me talking in reference to what i have seen in the Fascinate community. I want a good daily driver that is going to improve over all performance and have the ability to over clock and under volt possibly a different radio as well. I see the Tiamat Kernel but correct me if i am wrong that is only for AOSP roms. I personally love the idea of AOSP but for my brother the phone giving issue in any way is not a option. Again based off the Fascinate Dev community i know our touchwiz based roms in comparison to the AOSP stuff is much more manageable in case anything arises. I only hope that somebody in the community here who reads this is familiar with the Fascinate and can better help my decision. Thank you in advance.
Edit** Just noticed that nitsuj17 is a dev here so hopefully he can chime in. His roms on the fascinate were perfect for daily driving and stability.
Most of the Sense ROM's don't need to be overclocked and undervolted. Most of my favorite have custom kernals modded for the ROM. I've tried overclocking, but it seems to work better with the kernal that comes with it.
AOSP, i enjoy overclocking and undervolting. However, i think testing is the most important thing.
Drellisdee has the best kernel for sense #21 IMO. Nitsuj "m" Rom is an amazing stock modded Rom.. I received excellent battery with that kernel and Rom... Then I always OC/UV to 1.3Ghz and -50mv on all voltages with that kernel

Awesome appreciate it guys. Did all the work tonight and did what faehsemc said. Man downgrading to 2.3.3 was a pain.Only issue i am having now is i can't get android wifi tether to work is this a known problem of sorts? The devices trying to connect continue to try to get a ip address.
I haven't had any issues with tether.. I use wireless tether 2.0.7

ahhhh i was trying to use one of the beta builds. i will try to do that before my brother leaves. thank you again.
I use what is in my sig at stock clock speeds with smartassv2 gov and UV -100 across the board. My phone takes UV like its nothing but if I OC over about 1.3 or 1.4 it locks up within 5 min.
I would like to say that i did undervolt it. No offense to the developer of incredicontrol but it could use a better GUI. Correct me if i am wrong though but you have to use incredicontrol in conjunction with something like voltage control. I figured voltage control would have done the overclocking and voltage setting but it will only do the overclocking, governor, and scheduler stuff. I think setcpu does it all but given that it is my brothers phone i didn't purchase the app. Like i said though the only issue i was having was wi fi tether. So as someone mentioned above he was using the 2.xx version versus the 3.xx betas. If someone can confirm whether or not which version of wifi tether is broken or not i would greatly appreciate it. I don't want to clutter the forum with another thread.
Hey guys. I'd like to know what kernel you think suits you best. I'm looking for both subjective answers and objective answers. Which of the following suits you best?
Franco kernel
Trinity kernel
Faux kernel
Glados kernel
Stock CM kernel
Other
Please post a comment explaining why you have chosen the way you did. Feel free to discuss any kernel and also share your phenomenal tips and tricks.
glados for:
best compromise (for me)for performance\battery
fully featured like many others kernels but.....most of these features came from glados's dev,and then others dev implement it,love liveOC and is the unique with that feature, the dev is very gentle and available, the kernel can be adjusted via the control app,and IMHO is more good that trinity\franco's app for features, dispositions, colors, style etc.
i tried and used all the kernels and buyed all the dev's control app.my choice is glados, after 2\3 months of usage i don't want to came back.the best for my usage\tastes\preferences.
only 2 things that i miss:
a minimal slot of 190\220 mhz
preset pre-configured like franco's app (powersave,music,high power,etc etc..)
The kernel packaged with CM9 is faux, unless the CM team uses faux as a base and changes something in it..
Franco for me, despite some issues he is devoted to making his kernel perfect and his app is really good too for updating. Makes life a lot easier. With Franco's kernel I can say I have hardly ever had an app FC. I've tried other kernels but I just find with Franco's there is just more consistency and when I look at his thread I know what is going on almost instantly. This is my experience. I also like Fugu kernel and Trinity and GLAdos so on occasion I will try them out.
No Lean Kernel? Probably one of the most popular Kernel's out there
IAP Samurai kernel just rolled on the scene and couple of weeks ago. It's in the Sprint Gnex development section. I recommend giving it a try, Earthbound did some real good kernels in the OG Epic. Community and now he's brought his talents to the Gnex. It is based on Faux, but with IAP twists.

Currently switch between cm9 plus and leankernel. Both have a great balance of performance and battery life
I use the CMplus Kernel from here, he works with no problems under CM9 by me.

I completely agree. Franco/Lean kernel is the way to go. If I had more time throughout the day I'd like to try out the others again, but I don't feel like there's a need. Franco's kernel and app are great!
Been out of the Android game for a little bit, 6 months, looking at buying the 5x. What are some good mods, tweaks, kernels and roms to use so I can be prepped when it comes in. Basing off tax return will either be 5x or 6p. Bought an iPhone mainly to give it a whirl, good phone but not nearly what I want out of my device.

You're gonna get a lot of different answers here but here's my two cents:
ROM: Ubermallow
Kernel: Phasma Kernel
Tweaks and Mods: L-Speed and Interactive Governor Tweaks
Links are in my signature.
Why? What I want out of my Nexus is a butter smooth and enjoyable vanilla Android experience. I don't need to tweak everything down to the very pixel or customize every single bit of the UI on my phone. It's just not necessary to me. Ubermallow and Phasma Kernel are developed by the same developer, DespairFactor, who works very closely with UberTC creator Chat Kener. UberTC is highly regarded and used by thousands of devs in the Android world to optimize their work. Because of their close relationship, I'm confident that Ubermallow and Phasma Kernel are one of the best choices you can make. Although, in the end, a lot of the big devs for the Nexus 5X all wind up sharing their work or using the same commits as each other anyways. Ubermallow has just the right amount of customization without getting ridiculous, which Phasma Kernel absolutely flies and comes packed with different features, governors, I/O schedulers that most other kernels don't. They're also updated quite often. L-Speed takes things further in implementing tiny tweaks that makes the phone feel smoother and generally a bit snappier. The Interactive Governor Tweaks are a huge project / discussion that has exploded in recent weeks which focuses on coaxing the best battery life out of our phones without sacrificing performance. The results are astounding.
TL;DR - It depends on what you want out of your phone. If you're into huge amounts of customization, my suggestions may not work best for you. It depends on your usage patterns and your personal tastes. If you want slick performance and great battery life, my suggestions above are a good place to start. I highly recommend you flash different ROMs and kernels until you find what best fits you. We're very lucky to have some of the best Devs out there working on our device. There's no wrong choice when it comes to these guys.

Awesome and thank you for the tips. I will give those a go as soon as my phone comes in, tomorrow or Friday. I will let ya know how it works for me, don't expect to be stock at all. Do you know if Multirom will or is supported for the device as that would be an excellent way for me to give new roms a go. And what apps would you recommend for rooting now besides the standard Titanium Backup, xPosed, TWRP manager and Flashify?
