I'm on vacation and was taking pictures of the kids by the pool when I fumbled it and it dropped into the water!!!!! :crying: I quickly jumped in and grabbed it (it was probably only 10 seconds). I took the backing off, pulled the battery, and since my towel was right there, dried it as best I could. I ran back to the cabin, but had no rice. The kids ran to other cabins, found rice, and I had it in a bowl within 5 or 7 minutes.
What else can I do? Do I need to unscrew everything and clean the board with a toothbrush or q-tip with rubbing alcohol? I don't have insurance on it and CANNOT afford a new one! Not to mention ALL my pictures are on there! Please help! I'm completely panicked and in tears.
Thanks in advance,
Keri
Don't freak you did good... I would take it apart and just set it in the rice overnight... the rice should pull every bit of that moisture out and depending on if the water fried the board or not it should boot right up in the morning....
In the future download drop box, all your pictures are backed up as soon as you shoot them.

Do I need to undo all the screws or just pull the battery and submerge the battery and main unit in the rice?
I've been meaning to use dropbox, too. I just hadn't gotten around to it (shame on me, I know).
Thanks so much,
Keri

It would probably be better if you remove the screws... but maybe not completely neccessary either.. but since you don't have insurance, you don't need to worry about voiding that, so I would remove them and leave it in rice... one of my friends got super drunk and left his phone out for 7 hours in some puring rain, left in rice with it taken apart for 24 hours and hasn't had a single problem... (his phone was off though, so that probably made a difference....)
I removed the six main screws, but can't figure out how to separate the backing from the front face. I'm not sure if there are more screws, but my tools are extremely limited (only have a mini screwdriver set).

Check youtube for how to take the epic 4g apart (make sure its not the epic touch). Its there and will give you a step by step...
Edit- video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6npRaFm0d4&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Btw there are 7 screws... your missing one... don't go any further on that video than just taking the casing off... don't remove any wires unless you are comfortable putting them back together... don't lose the buttons!!! And a butter knife works pretty well for prying the casings apart... just be GENTLE! After you get the casing apart, stick it in the rice, put it back together in 24 hours or so and let us know how it goes....
Awesome...just realized I'm in the Epic 4G forums, not in the Epic 4G TOUCH forums. Should I post this there, or will someone be able to move it for me?
Sorry about that...(and I'll look on YouTube for instructions on how to dissassemble the touch).

Bag of rice is good. What I do is keep all the little silica packets from vitamins and aspirin bottles and add that to the rice. I also set it on top of a warm device like my wireless router with battery removed but in there with it. We live by a river where friends and family are always coming back with dunked phones and so far we have no bricks yet!
Edit - in a zip lock but not closed.

oooo ya I should've said that... don't close the bag or cover the pot or whatever you put it in....
If for some reason the rice doesn't work. It is pretty easy to take the phone apart. Since it is a touch. But you will have to be careful when removing the glass. I had to do this with my wife's phone. Use A tooth brush and rubbing alcohol. Good luck and I hope it works.

Thanks so much for all your great suggestions. I've got all of it in a bowl. My next step will be to take it apart and use the toothbrush/rubbing alcohol method. I desperately hope it doesn't come to that. I guess I'll find out in the morning!!! I'm saying my prayers tonight!

no hero, this is my only phone. yes i have insurance.
Well, I would recommend to use rice but with that not possible for ya I would just try this. Make sure to pull out your battery and memory card just so its the phone itself. Leave it in a fairly warm area. Leave it in the warm area overnight and somewhat into tomorrow.
Note: I say warm area because one of the girls I know dropped her phone in the lake this summer when I was out there. It was probably a good 5 feet of water and the phone was submerged for probably around 2 minutes. She left her phone in her car which got fairly warm(In kansas it gets really warm and muggy in the summer) for about 2 days. The phone has a few things wrong with it but overall everything that she needs to work does. Oh yeah, she doesn't have the Evo, but it was a Droid.
Rice? What? Are you supposed to put a wet phone into a bowl of rice and hope the starchy rice will draw water from the phone?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Bowl of rice, or a freezer back with your phone and rice. By sealing it off from air the rice will pull moisture.

I know I said hairdryer originally, and I did because I used that when I had got my phone wet before. But after reading articles through google people recommended not using it because the chance for pushing the water further into your phone and causing a short. Just be careful, it worked for me but some people seem to think that its not a good idea.

well i know it's working and i have no rice tonight so i have to make due. it wasn't alot of water in the first place. everything seems to be working on it last i checked.
the evo seems worse than the hero was when it comes to any liquid. they should have some sort of seal behind the glass screen.
i can confirm the macaroni is indeed sucking up the moisture. you can see it turning colors, awesome alternative to rice i guess. just use a ziplock bag and fill with warm air.
ill report back tomorrow with the results, just glad the phone still works. of course im within my 30 days too yet.
I would pull the battery and dont put it back in until it's dry, if it doesn't have power it can't short out. Best thing you can do is just give it time and let it sit somewhere warm and with something to soak up the water.
(I know there is some topics here in similar subject, but I'm having desire z with lid structure and the phone was in the water only for a short time)
I know it's not smart to take expensive smart phone to toilet with you, especially when the phone is on your hand. Well, I wen't to take a leak and the phone slipped off my left hand and dropped straight to the dirty water in the toilet seat. Picked it up immediately, it was in the water about 1-3 seconds.
The screen was on before getting wet and turned immediately off, the lights on front flashed couple of seconds and I took battery and simcard out immediately. Shaked it a bit and tried to dry it with paper and left it on the towel which was on the warm radiator.
I have googled now a long time and got very different solutions... I'm not going to try any of them since some of the solutions are clearly by trolls. I'm not going to put my phone to the water or sack of rice, I'm not going to use hair dryer since I don't have one. I don't think I have rice either...
What is to be done here? Is my phone dead and gone... ? I had it about a month and I'm scared if it doesn't work any more. I use it both in work and home and this is really bad situation for me.
I made first mistake and tried turn the phone on too soon, about under an hour since the accident. As soon as I put the battery on I got the dim orange led light, the screen was black. When pressed the power button it vibrated three (3) times and nothing happened. I then took the battery and SIM off again and put it back on the radiator. Now I'm going to have it there until tomorrow morning I go to work. If it's still not working, I have to use my Nokia E90 since I get it fixed or.... I have to buy the new phone... damn it.
While waiting, any solutions available? Warranty is not covering this for sure.
And please, do not start conversation about "why phone in the toilet?" or things like that. The accident already happened and there is no point thinking "why"? I learned my lesson and this is the first time in my gadget history when something dumb like this happens... I feel like I have won in the lottery, same chances...
I had rooted Virtuous and I'm from Finland if it counts something...

What makes you so sure? Don't knock the bag of rice trick. A ton of people on here have advocated its use, and swear by it. Its supposedly a natural desiccant. Rice is cheap, and it really can't hurt at this point, can it?
The "dirty water" might contain salt... if so the salt will short out the components ... I had a old WM 6 phone that dropped in to the ocean.
The keypad for it stopped working had to take it apart and clean off the salt from the ribbons and components, you can clean with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol (worked fine after that).
Whatever you do don't use a blow dryer it will melt the components in your phone.
Try letting it dry naturally. or the Rice Idea.
The rice is not a trick -- it really works for getting the moisture out.
luckye Smartphones are not so expensive these days.
If I dropped my phone in the toilet I would get a new phone for exsmpe a HTC Sensation 1.2GHz dual-core, qHD display, and Sense 3.0 or evo 3D
Thanks for the comments! @redpoint73, Some of the tips sounded really bizarre to me, like dropping the phone again to full bowl or glass of water or even alcohol, letting it fully drown to water and alcohol and leave it there for certain amount of time...? or put it in the freezer for hours? or in the oven for too long time? what??
Now when I think of it, the white rice sounds ok. But I still don't feel that easy to use the tip even if I could borrow the neighbour's.
I decided from the start I let it dry naturally. It seems very dry from outside, not much water came out from the start and it was "under water" (I don't think it fully drowned even yet) only 1-3 secs like I said, that's why I tried it on in the first place... my mistake.
I hope I have not bricked the phone. I will keep you posted.

Nice question, got me thinking. I meant there is just too much those answers around "just let it dry naturally" and because this is new situation for me I try to avoid damaging it more, which I've may have already done by trying to start it again, but anyways, doh...
Anyways, I found basmati/eastern white rice and put it to rice bag on the rice. I'm afraid it might get inside the phone. The phone will now be on the rice overnight.

yeah trying to power it on prob wasn't the best idea... sorry for the generic trying to let it dry naturally if you don't have rice. I am just going by my own experiences with cell phones the last 10 years since back when Nokia Candy bar style phone were the norm. If you just let it naturally dry for a day with the battery out and then try turning it back there is a 70% chance it might turn back on.
"60% of the time it works every time "
I would take the battery out, then leave the phone in a bowl of pure alcohol
After a couple of minutes swishing it around I would leave it in a bowl of rice to get ALL of the moisture out

I see the workings of a new candid camera or punked or some sort of tv show with this idea... XD
But that sucks, man. Good luck. I hope the phone doesn't smell after this.
Soaking it in isopropyl alcohol 99% will clean all of the electronics and draw out the water and piss.
Then bury it in a bag of white rice for 24 hours, alcohol evaporates extremly fast, but after 24 she should be clean and dry.
I say this because I am an electronic tech by trade and have used this method successfully numerous times. The even better thing to do is to completly disemble the phone, clean with alcohol and dry but most people find it easier to just drop it in a bowl then a bag of rice.
Good luck dude

Okay, it has been in the rice now overnight and everything works except the touch screen. I put it back to rice and let it be there for a days or so, in the mean time I think I will call my local store and ask what to do. And tell my boss (I use this phone as work as well). I have to use my old Nokia while gettin the solution...
Thanks for the precious tips!

Wow, my first post here gets to be about dropping my G1 in the toilet.
Except my G1 sat in the bottom of the toilet for a good 2 hours. Let me tell you, that was quite the shocking discovery when I went back in the bathroom to take a leak! Well after 2 hours of sitting in water I wrote it off and headed straight out and got my G2. I did immediately pull the battery out and rinsed it off under fresh water and wiped it down with disinfectant. When I got back from purchasing the G2 I put the G1 in a bowl of rice and it sat there for at least 3 days before I thought to try turning it on. And of course it works flawlessly now.
The key I thing is that I didn't even bother trying to see if it still worked by powering it on after a few hours. Made that mistake with prior phones, and that is probably what kills most phones that have been submerged. So resist the temptation to check and see if it still works and just let it sit in a covered bowl of rice for a few days.
My 8 year old now plays with the G1 which she calls the "toilet phone". :d

You have to know exactly what you're doing before trying it... for me it sounds too dangerous.
I have decided to let my phone be in rice bag until Thursday morning, if it does not work by then I will boot it to recovery mode and nandroid backup all my data and then take it to repair service... I hope it works and it does not cost much...
Thanks for hanging with me.
What should I do?
The soda was sprite with no ice so it wasn't diluted. It was sitting submitted for about ten minutes before she noticed (it was in the cup holder in the car while driving).
I'm pretty sure it's probably beyond saving but just the same I'm thinking of rinsing it in warm water to get as much of the sugar out as possible.
Then putting it into a container with rice for a couple days.
Any suggestions would be welcome but please don't say anything off color towards my wife. That won't be appreciated.
EDIT: Does Sprint insurance cover this?
I work for Verizon wireless and having a cellphone submerged in liquid for 10 mins is no Bueno mi amigo. A simple splash has been killing a bunch of phones. But I'd suggest you obviously take out battery and blow dry it and use the rice but don't attempt to turn for a little while.. Good luck bud.

Your best best is to leave it in a closed contained, completely submerged in rice, with the battery removed, for a day or two.
Yeah I put in an airtight container with rice as soon as she got home.
I'm still wondering if rinsing it might be a good idea.
Any clue as to whether Sprint insurance covers this?

They won't, as its considered water damage, which isn't covered. I think if you have insurance and its done, the best they might give you is pay 100$ to replace it.

On the sprint insurance... it depends on what level you have. if you have equipment repair then no if you have total equipment protection YES it will be covered with a $100 deductible. you will have to go through asureon. another not on that i have known a few people recently that made claims on evo4g and received a 3d as a replacement... not saying it will happen, but it could.

What are the chances that it's going to make it?
It was in there for a good second before I managed to get it out. I quickly reached down pulled it out and did a battery pull as fast as I could. Now my question is, how long do I leave it to dry for before attempting to turn it back on?
It's presently on my patio air drying where I plan on leaving it for a full day. Then I plan on submerging it into a bowl of rice for yet another day.
Is this the right procedure and anyone have any other recommendations?

You did all you could to save it. You actually have minimal chances of permanent damage if you really took it out in one sec. and pulled the battery.
I've saved this way a SGS1 but is stayed under water a good 5 to 10 minutes (time it took to my friend to stop crying and come find me and complain about dropping the phone in the toilet ).

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It should be fine if you got it out quick as your phone didn't get immersed in water for that long; just leave it out to air dry, wipe away any water and I'd probably recommend waiting over 24 hours depending on where you live... If you have a sim card, I'd suggest you to remove it as well
If that bowl contained only water it should be ok. To be sure 100% you can put it in rice for some time, like overnight.
There should be an app for a warning screen when you approach proximity of toilet. Bombs away.
Sent from my Nexus in Texas.
I would have pulled the battery and sim immediately, then shook off any excess liquid... then sealed it in about 2 cups of white rice in a sealed baggie. And for no less than 48 hours, much more like 72...
Then there's the other crowd who not only would have done the above, but after shaking off the excess liquid, would have submerged it into 91% rubbing alcohol which would have sanitized it by removing impurities in the water. Then putting it into the rice baggie.
I'm not too keen on further submerging it into anything on purpose, but it makes sense as alcohol has drying properties.
As always, your mileage may vary.
Good Luck!

When I get home later I'm gonna put it into a bag of rice for a further 48 hours, then hope for the best. Sadly, this is my 2nd Galaxy so if it doesn't work I'm gonna just hold off for the next best thing. The first one fell into the ocean. I had too much to drink so I more or less deserved that happening. This time though, I was trying to be so careful and made sure to keep the phone FAR away from the toilet (literally 3 feet or more) while I was reading an email. I turned slightly and my elbow accidentally hit my shower's door causing the phone to pop out of my hand. Out of all the places it could have landed, of course, it landed straight in the toilet bowl.

Personally, I wouldn't put it in rice, I would look around for some silica gel. The rice can (and will) get somewhat permanent dust under the screen, while the gel does not release dust/powder/etc.

agreed... too many particles floating around in a bag of rice but if it's your only option, then rice is better than nothing
Rinse it off in alcohol, that will fix it.

How does a water proof spray keep water out of openings? A force field?

No, it creates a water proof coating on all components, preventing water from every reaching them/get them wet.

i concur with the alcohol suggestion. your issue is going to be corrosion. if you are able to obtain some anhydrous isoproply alcohol i would submerge it in there then let it dry fully at least a few days just to be sure.
While my brother was up north with his friends, he ended up going tubing with his phone in his pocket. He fell off into the lake 4 times. He did not do anything (didn't open it up to dry, just left it in his pocket) until he got home 6 hours later. I took it and put it in rice for a couple of hours and it would turn on and either boot loop or go really really slow. He was going to pay TEP $100, but I odined it to see if the flash memory got corrupted and then it worked fine!

It was still in his pocket... so not too deep... only like 1 foot or 2 since he was wearing a life jacket.

Well the pressure of being deeper in the water could play as another factor.

LOL, no it doesn't. Pressure will only matter if the item is waterproof to begin with. Wet is wet in this case, simple as that. OP, prepare for a ton of corrosion in the next few weeks/months. Don't be surprised if it dies on him. OH, and call him an idiot for going in the water with his phone in the first place.
thats pretty wild..
i dropped my s2 in the toilet 6 months , left it in rice over night and now it works perfectly
Who the hell goes tubing with a phone in his pocket, nonetheless a 600$ phone.. Leave it in the boat!
Seriously.... I don't even take my phone to the pool with me because I'm afraid it will get splashed or something.. I leave it at home or in the carcar

If I'm going in the water, i'll just active my crappy Pantech P7040,and bring a dedicated camera with me. I'd rather destroy them both rather than destroy my precious pebble blue baby!.... seriously....
Damn. I was hoping you would have gotten the s3 Marcus. Loved all of your work for the epic plus us Michiganians need to stick together lol

Can't wait for life proof to release the s3 case

Some companies say your phone is relatively safe from submersion up to certain depths, given you don't just let it sit there and soak (you could drop it in accidentally and snatch it back up real quick). The depth most certainly matters.

I agree with that. Another factor though the OP didn't bother removing the power asap can save parts from short circuiting. I had a previous phone survive a short submersion but I removed it asap and the the battery and dried it as much as possible. the screen was weird for few days but it dried out eventually and looked normal. The original poster was lucky. Removing power asap before worrying about removing moisture may be a good priority. Amazing feat for a phone in that boat ride.
I must confess I went wakeboarding with my old Sprint HTC Hero in my swimsuit pocket a few years ago. Yeah, just an absent minded dumb mistake. I tried the rice thing and it did kinda turn on but never worked right.
Obviously I didn't care about that phone like I do this one

I wanted to return my Optimus V that i used as a donor phone to flash my GS2 to Virgin Mobile,so i put it in the microwave for about 4 seconds and it started to smoke a little.
So i thought that it was fried and tried to turn it on and to my surprise LG logo still came on but that was it.I took it back to the store that i got it from and said that its broken and got my money back.I broke it just to make sure ESN was fried.

My gs2 was in the toilet for unknown amount of time,i took it apart, dried it baked it in oven and it still worked but i could only use the "Power" button once to turn on the phone and after that power button didnt work.
Check out what i did with my almost useless GS2 Epic Touch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29176196#post29176196 .
