Hi everyone,
I'm interested in rooting my phone and installing cm10 on it. I've read through all of the stickied posts, and watched the root/flashing videos, but things have changed since those videos came out and I'm having a hard time finding the correct answer.
My first question is regarding the use of Appdroids method of rooting. I'm using a Telus i747 and a windows PC, and am unsure whether I would be better off using his root method that does not trip the flash counter, or using the Snapdragon Toolkit, and using Triangle Away in the future if I ever need a warranty replacement.
Using the snapdragon Toolkit and TriangleAway later, will I be left with my warranty in tact? I'm assuming no traces of my rooting/flashing will be left over once I've used those two methods.
Second, in the Snapdragon Toolkit method, he mentioned that the canadian variant would be included in the future. I'm a canadian, but I'm using the i747, so in the future can I just always pretend that my phone is an AT&T phone and ignore the fact that there are canadian versions for certain root methods?
I understand that some of these have likely been answered in the past, but because I'm using a Telus phone, I've had a hard time finding all of my answers in the same place.
Thanks in advanced, and I'm excited to be a part of this community.
Not to bump or anything, but I'm really trying to figure this out before. I root tomorrow.
I've downloaded the stock Telus kernel with the root injected so I'm planning on using that method. Is there a large risk for failure using cmd to flash cwm onto the phone?
Just follow this guide directly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
most simplest and wont trip counter.
Also regarding the toolkit. All the variants are included but again, I would just flash using Robinson's method (above link) it's easy and works, better off than risking something you don't know.

There seem to be a couple of different methods to get root over in the android dev sections for my T-mobile T999 ... Some trip the "counter" others do not.. some seem to flash an entire rom, while others seem to do it a different way? Not being a Android veteran - I'm just a little lost and wanted to ask for guidance to avoid a goof because I'm not certain of the terms and methods being used.
ANY HELP OR GUIDANCE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
Simply stated: What is the best method for getting ROOT? I have a T-mobile T999 which is already sim unlocked.
I have not idea what the "counter" is, and why its important (if in fact, it is important?)
In a perfect world, I'd like to get root, cmw and superuser by using something like superoneclick which was the way I rooted my last device. Doesn't get much easier than hooking up the phone and clicking a button and waiting
WHY DO I WANT ROOT?
I want to be able to flash some of the cool themes I'm seeing, the snap picture with volume key mod, get rid of carrier iq, and uninstall (debloat) some of the useless factory apps installed on my stock rom, and I'm anxiously awaiting a working Jellybean rom which I have no doubt will be available sooner or later.
THANKS.

Counter is a method used by Samsung to see if your phone has been modified. For example, in case you need to exchange your phone with your carrier or Samsung then they would check the counter. Your warranty will automatically be voided. If this is important to you, then i suggest using the rooting method without ticking the counter number. all the rooting methods are easy as pie, its just up to you which to use. I used the one with ticking the counter because it was the very first method. There should bea counter reset work around soon so I'm not too worried

ok I'm not new to rooting and roming I'm coming off a rooted and Romed atrix 4g. My question is I was going to root my att s3 with the s3 root tool kit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746665 which allows you to root and flash a custom recovery. but what I didn't see is a way to unlock the bootloader. I didn't know if that would be required, to flash a custom rom, I know I had to do that with my atrix. If so does anyone have any easy link for unlocking the bootloader. also I had heard that some people have had issues after root connecting to att lte. I wouldn't think it would matter since the apn's wouldn't change. thanks ahead of time for any help, and call me a noob if you want, I could care less.
Don't use that as I believe it will trip your flash counter.
Use the no trip root guide located in the android development section.
Also, you do not have to unlock the bootloader, it is already unlocked, you just have to get rooted by flashing with Odin and then install a recovery. I recommend TWRP which can be easily installed through goo manager once you are rooted.
The issues with LTE are not associated with rooting, but rather with flashing AOSP based ROMs but I do believe they have fixed most or all of those issues.
Lastly, I too cane from an Atrix and the S3 is a bazillion times better. I reccommend Triune 2 for a custom ICS ROM (avoid touchwiz JB ROMs for now) and Task650's AOKP ROM. Also, ktoonsez has the best kernel available with up to a 2.1GHz oc.
Cheers, PM me fellow atrix user if you need any other assistance.

yea i saw the other method too. maybe I'll go that way. i wasn't to worried about the whole tripping the flash counter. since it looks like chainfire has a fix. although it sounded like that could be more risky than rooting. thanks for the answer about the bootloader and the lte issues. actually still on the atrix for the moment running nuetrino bc the first night i had the s3 i dropped it and completely cracked the screen. was a little disappointed since i have dropped my atrix countless times and never had an issue. oh well thanks for in store warranties.
Yeah, I've seen some people have had issues using the Triangle Away app, so it's better to just not trip the counter to begin with.

Hi Guys,
I am really new to the rooting customary process. Pardon me if there are information that I am not aware of. Okay, I always wanted to root to install apps that were restrictive to what I want and how to manage the phone properly. But I bought my Note 2 in Singapore, which is why I was hesitating as most of the guides were for AT&T and other American phone companies.
I was hesitating but a friend of me referred me to a very simple clip to root with using Odin
Needless to say, I rooted the phone and was able to install the couple of applications I wanted though there were a few I still couldn't find replacements for (Market Unlocker, AdAway).
However, I find myself not being to use ROM Manager to backup and change ROMS and being different with how normal people rooted. I think it has got to do with the how I had my phone rooted.
Please advice how I can place myself in what the general public is using as it would be easier for me to configure the phone if I were to try looking for assistance in the future.
Should I unroot and root using the XDA developer suggested way (I found the clip on YouTube but it wasn't for the firmware 4.1.2, thus I hesitated) ? After rooting my phone says its firmware is 4.1.1
Actually, if someone could also answer me whether
1) I can update my phone after rooting or do I need to unroot and update and root it again ?
2) Is the furthest update for Note 2 is 4.1.2 and in order to go for further updates I need to root ?
Again, pardon my knowledge on rooting. Thanks

Please do more research before doing anything but I would question if you have a custom recovery installed? You could use GooManager on the market to install a custom recovery (Open GooManager -> menu -> "Install OpenRecoveryScript") but check your phone model number first and make sure it matches the file you are about to flash. This would enable you to work with flashing and such. Also check your model number I believe the Verizon phones have locked bootloaders and don't know if your will or not (I believe this adds steps to flashing a custom recovery.) Wish I could be of more help.
Hey there Galaxiers,
I'm new to this forum. I just upgraded my AT&T S3 to Jelly Bean 4.3 and becuase of that my tethering app no longer works.
I purchased a new tethering app that has great reviews called "WiFi Tether Router", but it is saying that I have to have "ROOT Permission"
I am assuming this means I have to root or semi-root my phone, but it seems like a lot of trouble.
Is there a simple method to get this permission without rooting, or a safe way to do it for someone who is not a total tecky.
Any help/direction here would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

In most cases tethering will require root, that is simple enough to do using cf autoroot, just search I forums and d/l the proper img or tar file(for Odin), rooting will kick your counter, so your warranty is void after that, triangle away will reset flash but not warranty counter.

Am I to assume that all of my apps and setting will still be intact after this rooting process? And are there different version to root to? If so what would you recommend?
I'm not worried about warranty as I've had the phone for around 2 years. I just don't want to end up with a brick.
If I knew that the upgrade on Jelly Bean would lock out my tethering I would have never done it. God I hate these phone companies always trying to squeeze us for everything and more.
Mark in Brea
They should stay intact, but you should always do a backup in case something goes wrong, you can use the SGS toolkit by mskip's to do the backup but don't use it to root it is not up to date for that, just use option 99 to go straight to menu, bypass model info

Hi All
Let me start with few good things here You guys are amazing helping and providing tweaks for us:good:
I am Nexus user. I have Installed Custom Recovery, Flashed ROMs and rooted my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. This is my First Samsung Tablet. I have waited enough for Nexus 10 (2). I finally bought SM-P600.
I was trying to find an Guide with links for Unlocking bootloader and Updating firmware and then flash Custom recovery for this but coudnt figure it out
I have been reading lots of things about Knox and counters related to it.
Can anyone Please help me find answers straight.
1) Any Rooting and Custom Recovery tools or ADB commands without Hitting the KNOX counter {Just In case IF I wanted to return it} If not then which one you recommend ?
By the Way I found few posts related to Rooting Which has confused me more. I used to use Chainfire SUROOT:
Rooting using CF-AUTO Root
Universal Root de la Vega
2) If I Root and want to use Stock ROM of SM-P600 will all apps work normally or any known issues with it ?
3) Is Odin any tool which everyone is taking about ? I am not sure about it Can you provide any links to its dev for more info. Found it about in a Post to return to STOCK ?
4) Are these ROMS and apps Odexed or Deodexed ROM?
5) Any Dependencies for Firmware and with any of the above questions. I mean In Universal Root I saw they were talking about certain version of firmware. Also Should I update the latest firmware and do a Nandriod backup ?
6) Also read that once KNOX counter goes up, I wont get any OTA ? My Plan is I will use it till next Nexus and will give it to parents with stock ROM. If I am using I can always use an Custom Rom and get updates. But for parents I want to return it to stock so that they can easily update when OTA is available.
I would like to make one more suggestion to MOD's Please Pin the Guides like the Rooting and stuff like Return to Stock which are quite common and useful so that its easy for newbies( aka for Samsung) like me.
Thanks
Zaib.
1. This is not really a single question with a single answer I think vaguely what you are asking is if you can root without tripping knox?
Nope. Not at this time.
2. If you use CF-Auto-Root you'll likely find that the vast majority of applications keep working without issue. Of those that don't, a handful you can manage back to a working state with various tweaks, but there are a few that are probably gone for good. You can basically kiss all the Samsung hub apps goodbye, these will start claiming they are not supported in your country even if they were working perfectly prior to rooting, some may continue working for a short time after but eventually something leaks and your access is cut. Screen mirroring will no longer work though this can be fixed with a small zip file flash. OTA updates are also gone.
Forget all the talk about 'triangle away' fixing any of this, it hasn't for me.
3. Odin is a tool that is able to flash firmware files or parts thereof to your device. Heimdall is an alternative suite of applications, while there is a GUI for it, it seems fairly hit and miss on Linux these days, I've never had much luck with it, on the other hand the command line tools work perfectly fine.
Once you trip Knox, there's no turning back! You won't lose your warranty in any meaningful way, but you may end up having to argue about it and drag in government regulators to get your tablet repaired free of charge depending on the dealer response.
4. I don't think this is particularly relevant to the SM-P600. My subjective opinion would be to stick with the bog standard Samsung ROM. If you want cool themes there are a multitude of launchers, Xposed takes care most other things you might ever care to tweak.
5. You have one choice. CF-Auto-Root. Backups are healthy.
6. True, but you'll still be able to flash via Odin so it doesn't really mean much of anything. Once you trip Knox, you can also kiss OTA updates goodbye as well.
