I was out in the local mountains yesterday, trail riding with my boys. I was using My UN activated evo as a dedicated GPS unit. When we got back to the truck, I looked in horror at the empty holder on my bike, where the evo was when we started.
Now, the phone is unactivated, but I'm pretty sure both GPS and WiFi are on. To make matters worse, I had airplane mode on, so activating phone won't help. Now seeing how I turned both GPS and WiFi on after turning airplane mode on, is there any way to "ping" the WiFi? Time is of the essence, as I only have so much battery life. Thanks inn advance.
Wow...80 views, and no replies. A bit more info..first of all, yes,I did physically run the trail and look for the phone. Secondly, if I am able to get a signal off the phone's Wi-Fi, it would narrow my search area down to +/- 100' vs around 10 miles.
Since the Wi-Fi is not in active broadcast mode, one of the Wi-Fi sniffer apps would not work. The only idea I can come up with is using wife's phone, which I have tethered off before, and see if the evo tries to connect. Anyone have any others ideas? I'm open to any and all suggestions.

I was one of the 80 views but I haven't the slightest clue. I think due to that fact it is unactivated.
Call NCIS, they do everything in an hour on T.V.:silly:
Nah, really, I do not know.
I think by now your only hope is someone finds the phone and somehow connects it to you. By now the battery is probably dead. If you dont think so your only real option would be to bring another phone and try connecting to its hotspot every 100'. I think you may be SOL though.

Hello,
I have spent a lot of time reading and studying rooting and working with my Evo. I have rooted clockworkrecovery, and I'm running Ava Froyo's 2.2 software.
When I tried to get 4g, I replaced the wimax and radio files, and I removed the root data/misc/wimax tree.xml file.
I did all of this on the way to Austin, Texas, and it repaired and worked great for the couple of days that I was out of town... Then, when I got home, it stopped. I tried to do the same thing again to fix it, but it would only scan, quickly find the 4g, turn it on, and then almost immediately disconnect it.
It feels as though my 4g mac address has been blacklisted in my home zone, but not away from home. When the mac address reloads, it replaces it with the same alphanumeric, but it just seems to have locked me out of the system locally in Houston, in my home.
Anyone have any ideas on what might be going on or how I might fix it?
Thanks,
Jimmy
Are you using Switchpro Widget to enable 4G? I had a problem with my 4G just turning off immediately and it was because of the widget. If you are using that try enabling it from the settings or from the Power Control Widget (stock).
I'm having a 4G battle of my own right now so I have to see if I can figure out how to fix my 4G on a Mac since the instructions around here seem to be for PC. Hopefully that helps.
Hi, thanks for your response...
No, I don't have Switchpro widget, but I actually DID figure out exactly what was going on.
When I got home, I turned on Wifi. Wifi seems to disable 4g engagement. Even after 4g is running already.
I was under the mistaken assumption that I needed Wifi running to wirelessly tether to my laptop. I turned off the Wifi, turned on 4g, and, finally, it came on!
Then I turned on the wireless tether without, still without the wifi running, and it WORKED!
This drove me around and around, but, now, it finally works.
At one point of my studies, I thought that I read that the wifi was required to be running while the 4g was running. I don't know what that was all about. I'm just confused sometimes, and I don't have any explanation for this other than the outcome.
Thanks for the help, I'm going to look at Switchpro, but it's working now. I hate to mess with it, if you know what I mean.
Jimmy
If it ain't broke....you know the rest. My 4G connects but I can't browse so I have to look into it tomorrow.

I would recommend root explorer, saved me SOOOOOOO many headaches with dealing with root stuff and that pesky tree.xml in the data/misc/wimax folder... I tried for so long to do what it was supposed to do, only to have it all solved with one small purchase. Worth it to me! I would think that it would help you not have to deal as much with the Mac, especially code that differs from the PC.
Jimmy
I already purchased it. One of the best purchases you make.

I like WP7 so much. The potential is amazing, and after NoDo it was looking to be my OS of choice. However the fact that I cant keep WiFi running 100% of the time is such a damn shame. I cant receive email notifications, calender sync and no notifications from 3rd party apps like Twitter which makes it just utterly useless. I cant have the phone on charging all the time. It's a WIRELESS device and I use it that way. I dont want a data plan either. It just seems ridiculous. I have WiFi access to 90% of the places I visit everyday.
It's an incredible shame really and I cannot believe that it was intentional. It looks like an oversight on Microsoft's part.
All phones I know turn off Wifi when in sleep/standby. Did you know your Wifi comes back on automatically every X minutes depending on what you set your email/account sync settings to be?
My problem is with the amount of time it takes for the Wifi to connect again. On an iPhone, it takes mere seconds, while on my WP7 device, it takes at least 10-15 seconds on average, and sometimes, it doesn't even connect, and I need to either lock the screen, and unlock again, or go to settings, turn off Wifi and turn it on again.
It would be nice to be able to choose whether or not this happens.
Perhaps at some point we will see a simple app to keep wifi always on.

Not on Android. You get to chose how wi-fi operates while in sleep/standby.

Even if it is true (I doubt it), it won't work when you have EAS emails like Live, GMail and Exchange email and set to push email. In this situation, an active connection to the mail server must be maintained all the time.
my focus reconnects fairly quickly, usually within a few seconds. Android does allow wireless to stay on, but I bet this can be fixed with a registry mod.

it does not come back on when your screen is off. If my screen is off for two hours, and I get an email in the first 10 min, I will not get any notification of it until I unlock the phone 2 hours later. What an absolute **** up from Microsoft.
An option would be better. Though iPhone sleeps Wifi automatically either...
It's not really a miss by Microsoft.
You want to use your phone in a very specific way and that is different than the vast majority of consumers.

Not really... having Wi-Fi on all the time will flatten your battery literally every day. Smart phones were designed to be combined with data plans (try finding one on a no-data contract).
If your phone is plugged in to the charger the wireless will stay on, but otherwise it turns off when it's not in use.

Simply not true. As long as you're connected to a WiFi network (not constantly searching for one) WiFi consumes less battery than 3G. I agree that it should definitely be an option at least.

Seriously. If WiFi stayed on all the time the battery life would be horrible, then instead of *****ing about the WiFi issue this guy would be on here whining about battery life. Some people just can't do research before buying and accept something. And I'm pretty damn sure there's a Registry tweak for that in the D & H section.

OK First of all I did pretty extensive research. No where was this mentioned. Secondly my HTC Desire lasts me a little over a day with WiFi constantly on. Go figure!
I have wifi enabled constantly and data connection turned off which gives me better battery life than being constantly on 3g.

He's right. Problem is, the average consumer isn't stationary, especially here in the US where the majority of people commute, constantly. Therefore, your phone is polling consistently for a WiFi connection, which does eat up the battery. I've said this a few times, this feature isn't there to save battery while you're connected, it's to save battery while you aren't. The main reason it stays on while you're on a charger is because THEN you're stationary, and it knows it'll have a constant connection. If I were to leave my WiFi on all day, and use my phone the way I do, which is every 20 seconds, my battery would be shot in 2-3 hours...
So get an android device. why do people insist on getting phones that are not suited to their needs?

The default on Android is to turn WiFi off, and while I concerde Android's settings heirarchy is a hot mess... I still haven't found the option to force WiFi to stay on all the time... Unless you mean some third party application or custom ROM, in which case I could care less. That is why some applications like Trillian for Android provide an Option to force WiFi to stay on when the phone goes to sleep/standby. The phone doesn't automatically do it by default, and the option is not well-exposed for the user.

Unless you have no reception, the active connection will be maintained all the time. It works over Data and over WiFi, and ActiveSync can work largely fine even on a decent GPRS (i.e. 1G) or Edge data connection.

Yes you will. When WiFi goes off, the phone reverts back to using the cellular data connection. When WiFi goes on, it hands off to the WiFi data connection.
You should still get your emails. This has never happened to me and my ISP had tower issues, so I had almost 2 weeks of my internet connection cutting off every 5 minutes (so I didn't even have WiFi on my phone).
My phone's cellular connection is typically 3 bars of GPRS or less.

I think saying "not a ZuneHD" would be more accurate.
However, Steve Ballmer at the WP7 launch did say "every WP7 device is a ZuneHD."
So you're wrong there...
Hi guys,
Trying to figure out if this is just me that has this issue. New nexus as of yesterday on o2. I do have the volume issue for what its worth, but I am getting off topic.
I have been having a problem with the GPS. I have tried it indoors and out. I have restarted the app, cleared cache, re-ticked all the location boxes, and nothing seems to help my get a lock. The closest it comes is about 4700 metres. This is with WiFi turned on as well as an active Sim card in it. My old iPhone without a sim instantly drops the pin on my house. So I guess I am trying to see if others have the issue, and if there is a fix or I have to send it back.
For the record I am pretty new to Android....as in this is my first one, so go gently! Other than this issue I love the phone!
Cheers,
J

That definitely does not seem normal. See if you can replicate the problem in a less built-up area. But at the moment, if I were having the same problem (which I'm not, I get great GPS reception) I would take it back for a replacement.
Hope you get it all sorted.

Well I live in the country side, so that hopefully is not the issue. I turned wifi off and it made zero difference, so it looks like something with the GPS.......
I just tried the GPS app in the market called GPS Test
It says that GPS is on, but it can't find me. Bad sign.
I tried the GPS test app from the market too the other day and it didn't locate any satellites. I think it's a problem with that app itself. No need to panic yet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I've been suffering from the same problem. I'm used to the GPS icon on the SGS2 showing me a (blinking) dot in the GPS icon. But now nothing.
GPS test app also shows it's on. I'm going to try the GPS out a bit more, but have the feeling somethings up with the GPS.
Using the Wi-fi it's working 'fine'. But I don't feel like sharing info while using this feature.
The captivate had a very similar problem when it came out. Not sure if it ever got fixed. But ultimately that's why I turned my captivate back in.
If you are in the country with no wifi around then I wouldnt expect wifi location to do you any good. Still though, it should locate much better than what it is. I'm in Afghanistan, in the middle of no where and mine locks while only using GPS to within like 30 meters.
original SGS line of phones were famous for their "awesome GPS"
no, it never got fixed because it was a hardware issue...
I'm having the same problem. I'm constantly unable to find my location using GPS. Wi-Fi and mobile networks work but this surely needs to be fixed.
GPS seemed to work after my little trip outside. Sadly as soon as I got back in, nothing. I'll be able to do some 'proper field testing' tomorrow.

GPS normally does not work well indoors.
I know but because I managed to get a location with the GPS on the SGS2, even if it took a while.
I was hoping for similar results (or better) with the GN.
GPS on my GN isn't working at all. Unless Wi-Fi and mobile network location is ticked, the phone can't find my location with GPS. Argh.
Have you tried any GPS apps to see if it's just bad reception from the satellites? That's one way to find out what's going on with the GPS on the phone.
My GPS locks almost instantly, and this is without a SIM card, and in Manhattan with tall buildings blocking most of the satellites. Much faster than with my N1.
no problems here.fastest phone ever with gps and i got 10 phones around 3 years with the function.
sitting in my room on the couch in the second floor.WiFi of only 2G network
and got within 5 to 7 sec a gps fix about 10 meters.
I reapeat,... in my house!not on the street or on the window!
sitting in front of my tv
never got a phone who can give me a signal in my house
my GPS also seems to work fine but during tracking it always goes off lock and relocks
and it bounces on corners like a gummybear

Hey guys,
I've seen a few GS3 threads over the past few weeks where people with multiple Wifi access points have their phone desperately hang on to a relatively weak signal when a stronger signal is available on another access point.
I thought I would let you know that I've been trying out an app called 'Wifi Jumper" that seems to take care of this problem quite well. It scans every 60 seconds (configurable) and if it finds a stronger signal it will automatically drop the existing connection and reconnect to the stronger access point. It can also do other stuff like enable wifi based on mobile tower--based locations but I haven't tried this functionality.
Apologies if this has already been posted - I searched the forum for the word 'jumper' and got no results. It's a paid app available at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goramart.wifijumper
PS: I'm not affiliated with the app authors and don't get anything out of this in case your wondering.

has anyone tested the posted app? :good:
I'm about to give the ($1.22) app a go. I'll report back. Google Play and/or Wallet is down right now, so it'll be a bit.
The 802.11 signal sensitivity on my Tmo GS3 is HORRIBLE, so I gotta find something.
The thing that caught my eye about this app is that it will supposedly turn my wifi back on when my phone is in the cell-tower-specific geographic area.
I bought it and use it all the time. I am not sure how good it works. Sometimes it seems to work great and sometimes not so much.
I do like the repeater option so when I stay in a hotel it hops around to the best signal if they are all named the same.
I am interested in seeing what others use for this type of app as there are more and more in the store. None seem to be as good as Wifitrak was on my iTouch though.
I also use an app called Wifi Auto-login lite that works great at Mcdonalds, Home Depot, and Sams Club.
Am loving the Wifi Jumper app. Took me a few times to realize that it will re-enable wifi if you turn it off via any othere way than pressing stop on the Jumper app. It's behavior by design.. no ding intended

Fireraider, you should check todays wifi jumper's update. A complete rewritten repeater module should fix the connection problems that some repeater environments forced before.
In my Fritz!box 7390 + Fritz repeater + second access point with different SSID it works beautiful.
Beside the other nice features the app offers...
Good afternoon XDA HOX owners,
I'm having a really strange problem with getting on to my wifi AT HOME ONLY.
The phone sees the wifi, registers the strength of the signal, but loses connection all the time. it's the first time I've had this issue with a gadget, and this is the 4th smart phone that's been owned in my household, while using this particular wireless router. there's also 2 laptops, a NAS and an iPad (EEWwwww ) ... and my mates that have my wifi password get on without an issue...
If I turn the wifi on the phone off and on, it works for maybe ten seconds to a minute, and then drops connectivity, but not the signal. I know this because of the little 'up and down' connectivity arrows that run in the CM10 wifi indicator. they go either up, or down or nothing, but the signal is still there.
Any help would be massively appreciated as it's ruining my love for the awesome device the HOX is, especially running CM10.
Thanks :good:

Now works flawlessly
My nexus used to fly with the hub. Slightly irritated i had to lower performance purely for my phone. Its npt a massive difference but theres a reason theres a g and a n lol

Thanks mate.
So I've tried that and no luck. Virgin phone support says it must be a 'hardware issue with the phone'.
Any other thoughts?

I'm having similar issues with my Wi-fi at home, tho my connection lasts longer, sometimes 10 mins, sometimes 5 hours+ sometimes all day. The strange part is that when i use wi-fi on the phone alot like some sort of heavy stuff youtube, downloading etc. then my connection drops. I've tried using only N connection and BGN Mixed on 20 and 40HZ channel and N seams to give me the best results, never tried B and G connections since i think those reduce the range of your WI-FI , too bad i didn't go for A B G N router. Anyway could be up to my router or something, every device that uses my WI-FI has same issues with this router. I even took it to the repair center they've done some ping tests and showen me that router works perfect. anyway back home still does those buggy things. If anyone has any good idea please feel free to suggest us.
I'm also having an issue with mine, although slightly different.
My phone connects to available wireless with no problem and stays connected however when I leave that location it stays connected instead of switching back to mobile data. I have to turn off wireless and then turn it back on to get it to switch to mobile data.
Kinda a pain in the arse and really annoying. I've missed allot of important emails since I got this phone due to me forgetting to turn wifi off everytime I leave somewhere with wifi.
None of my previous smart phones had this issue. I'm hoping that if I get custom rom on it, it will work properly,
