*****UPDATE: January 12th, 2013
I have re-uploaded a few sample photos from last July/August of 2012 taken under STOCK Ice Cream Sandwich on Samsung Galaxy S3 i747m
I could not find many of the original photos on my phone SD card since my old SD card was corrupted. Also because of this, the re-uploaded photos are not in the original size, so preview size only.
================================
Cropped and slight color/saturation change on the phone, and because of that, the EXIF for all my sample images were stripped...
No tripod was used, but I tried to be as steady as my noodle arms allowed me to... (*Note: Anti-Shake is Turned ON)

UPDATED:
These are unedited photos, straight from the phone from walking in park today:
NIGHT Sample and Lower Light Samples (LED FLASH is turned OFF, and auto exposure):
ISO1600
ISO500
ISO80
-----------------------------------------------
COMMENTARY:
The camera is not too shabby, definitely an improvement if you are upgrading from a Samsung Galaxy S1, but not too much from a S2..
Large aperture does show a little bit of DOF due to tiny sensor, but not a lot, unless you do software edits. DOF will be better if taking macro shots with macro mode..
Performance in the dark is not too bad, but still suffers from A LOT of noise at iso1600. Using this thing at night time is probably not recommended especially out in the open where the LED flash is useless. Using during sunset and early evening, the GS3 i747m performs fine.
For some reason, all the sky during the daytime seems to be overexposed... (UPDATE: All BLUE colors are not very saturated and bright blue colored sources tends to be over exposed...) I suppose this is software.. Software editing or future update or custom ROM can probably fix this..
Auto focusing is not the fastest in the world, but gets the job done (well only in nicely lit areas lol)
Clarity of the optics seems alright, but not the sharpest I've seen on mobile devices...
The viewfinder On-Screen seems to be the best ones on mobile phones right now... The speed and smoothness of the camera panning is shown on the screen. There is VERY LITTLE SCREEN to SENSOR lag on this device.... This is a key to make the Galaxy S3 i747m's camera a winner... Hopefully more mobile manufacturers can incorporate this...
Update:
Nightshots without LED flash, autofocus is broken, and the focus is completely messed up.. Touch to focus, it is hard to get the green box on the focus.. If you do get the green box, the focus is broken... I tried to touch to focus at night, it says green and focused, but the viewfinder is a blur...
Shots from low light is nothing to write home about.. At iso1600, the pictures are very grainy, and without the correct autofocus, the shots are almost unusable on a standard computer monitor or even 4x5" prints..
Indoors with a single 40W light source seems to perform better. At iso500, the door picture seems to retain most of the details, with a bit of grain..
In the second indoor shot, there is a single table lamp in a dark study room... The auto iso at iso 80, most of the 2B pencil marks are visible at full resolution (click on thumbnail), and even the objects in the shadow or with darker colors, the noise remains at minimum.. At about this light for indoors, the camera performs pretty decent.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post your sample pics edited or original..
Give some of your opinions on the camera quality...

I voted average because i'm on cm10 and the focus isnt working
Great pics... I need to practice more. This was very early in the morning on our way out deep sea fishing. I was following another boat so I snapped a pic before it got rough.

I like the ocean clouds... There are soo many variations..
Is your photo edited in any way for color or contrast?
If not, then the colors and the contrast from the dark and the ocean looks great... I wonder if it has to do with the stock ROM...
S3's camera will do good in daylight or in bright areas. However during low light situations its very sensitive to camera shake. I wish my hands are as steady as a tripod.
Yes it was stock. The thing with the camera is the fast shutter. It was easier to hold the phone in landscape to get the picture. I took a couple but that one came out perfect.

Thank you for the anti-shake option. I was wondering why my pictures were coming out so blurry and this seemed to fixed that problem. Awesome cellphone photography btw, very wallpaper/lockscreen worthy.

I am thinking of getting a Defy as a free upgrade to my Hero. Reviews of camera seem mixed but general impression is that it's not brilliant, especially in low light. Interested to hear the views of people here.
You can compare the photos from defy with various other phones, including N8, iPhone4 on gsmarena site. Just click on some of the latest reviews, doesnt matter which phone, and go to the camera section of the review. There is a photo compare tool.
Thanks. That was helpful but I am more interested in the low light performance.

I was pleasantly suprised with the quality of the flash. up to a metre or 2 it is very effective and doesn't wash out the photo like some others. All in all I am pleases with the camera - thats just my opinion though.
Thanks. I am almost certainly going to get one. The nagging doubt in the back of my mind is the speaker issue. Difficult to know how much of a problem it really is. People who don't have the issue (obviously) don't post to forums
None of those Cell Cameras are that cool in low light compared to a DSLR. What would really help is a camera app that writes out a dng file so that one can properly posprocess this in say Lightroom/Photoshop/Noiseware.
Just for completeness shake, the camera module seems to be a MT9PT012 ...

IMHO - flash and camera is pretty awful. Here's a shot with flash, I even gave it +20 brightness in Gimp:

Then again, I might be spoiled by these babies:
Ironically - That was shot with my HTC Desire
I guess the Defy's camera is just below cell-phone average. It should't be your only camera, but for "Hey this looks fun!" shots it'll do fine.
I really like my defy but, honestly, the camera is not the best part.
Also the display looks not so brilliant as the desire's one.
I'm not saying they're bad, just they're not wonderful, but considering defy's price it's absolutely fair.
Well, one thing none of the others can do is H2Oing it. I just filmed in water, definitely better results than any other phone attempting the same
I'm using the Camera360 app. There is a filter called "Effect enhancement". If i you this one, the pictures look better - the ones taken in short range. Ok, they do look a bit "artifical", but for me its ok. There is a "free" version of that app for trying out...
The Defy is not the first Android i bought, but it will be the first Android, which will not be sold again. I really like this phone...
Maybe there will be some kind of camera-optimization. Until then, i will take my digi-cam for "more important" pictures to make.
Best regards
Stefan
Here is sample picture, resized, with flash and taken with camera360 app.
This was taken with a Galaxy S
This was taken with the Defy, different day so not a direct comparison. The weather was worse and it was cloudy. Hope this give you an idea of comparison though.
Defy on macro with flash
Defy with macro no flash. Shows good detail.
thanks
Photos aren't that great but they're not awful. I do find that the built in editing (kodak perfect touch) does an excellent job though. The macro mode and color reproduction aren't as good as my vibrant. But overall im satisfied.

yeah I agree that kodak perfect touch enhancement works well
What about Videos in 720p ?
Anyone succeed to take videos in 720p with Froyo 2.2 ?
have you tryed the kodak perfect touch option?? It's excelent! for night pics, and remember to use the "night" mode in dark places
imo, It's good++
I took pictures with it for the first time today. I did not like the quality of the pictures. My first impressions:
Pros: The LED flash is bright and puts my old BB Curve to shame. You could use it to blind a night time attacker if you could instantly turn it on with an external button.
The interface to take pictures is pretty good and easy to use.
Cons:
-Colors are muddy and off color even when shot outdoors.
-Colors with the flash are not automatically corrected and show up with the blue/white color cast of the LED flash.
-Color space compression is very noticable with banding visible under various conditions.
-Slow to take a picture because it does not focus until you click the onscreen button to take the photo.
I thought video was better on balance than the camera but it is rather poor in low light (as expected). I hope that I will learn to get better results with it after more testing but I'm glad it's not a primary reason for me to own the Defy.
-felipe
What about 720p videos?
Could someone try it?with froyo??
I found the camera pretty good in comparaison of my old phone.
But there's a hudge miss on the native camera app: you cannot change the JPG compression and by default it's very very compressed! Some have their 5Mpxl pictures that takes around 300kB (it should be 1.5MB at least!).
Maybe if someone know a way to change this settings it would be nice for improving the quality of the final picture
I really like the Vignette app for the camera, it's old school styles go rather well with the "performance" of the camear
Have anyone noticed that the camera quality is really bad?? especially for a 5 mp camera?? I noticed lots of noise, lines, etc especially shooting in low light. My LG Optimus One with 3mp produces way better photos, My old HTC Kaiser 3mp also produces very good pics, heck even my friends Nokia 5230 2mp camera shoots better photos.
So my question is, is it only me?? or is the camera of the defy really bad?? or is it some bad drivers?? I have bayer lens and using CM7 RC 1.5 and YES i change the quality of photos to 5mp, with Super Fine in the settings
depends on lense buil within your defy, red lense will take better shots and is capable of 720p recording
photos taken with green lense are really bad
I have red lens but photos are good only in good light - optimal is sunny day outside.
I think - you should not tu suggest only number of megapixels, but quality of lens.
You can't compare different camera base only on this.
I have a green lense Defy running MIUI 1.8.26, and it takes great pictures, IMO.

That is indeed good quality... so i guess its a matter of drivers or some software patch... if MIUI werent closed source, we could probably copy the drivers or patch or whatever...

Wow, the pics from my green lense Defy are horrible; irregular green tint allover, dim and pixalated
For reference, this painting is just black and white. I have the patch you referenced applied, but it only affects the jpeg compression level; it does nothing for the horrible color quality.
The camera on the Defy must be the worst part on an otherwise excellent device.

Taken with my beautiful Defy, same defy as you have with same camera Software. With stock Software from motorola, your photos will be much better, can't compare with cm7 and miui..
Using Macro, Landscape and Automatic Focus.
You only need to learn how to use your Camera, and, Defy, is not a camera, just a SmartPhone, so don¡t spect too much..
in cm7-110822 with bayer lens i have great quality photos and video. depends on the rom and the camera module, as said before
it depends on the app you use for taking images
I tried the stock app and the images were horrible
but when tried app called camera 360 the images were very very wonderful
so you can change the app and try the camera 360

i don't think camera of DEFY is that bad... i have a GREEN LENS defy... and here are the pics i have taken with it.... i have to admit defy takes awesome pics outdoors... and okay kinda pics indoors... and at night its bad...

and a pic taken when it was raining
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/4760/img20110827131742.jpg
not much difference between the stock camera and camera 360 ( even with the superfine setting enabled and the image size increased)
and also the video clarity of DEFY in outdoors is way better!! here is a video i have upload it to a filehost instead of video host coz of compression issues
http://www.filesonic.com/file/1983194051/VID_20110911_130049.m4v
and the videos indoors with decently lit rooms are quite satisfactory for me..
all in all its YOU who can make a pic memorable
Defy has probably the worst camera of all the current gen android phone!...it'sreally a shame that it sports a 5m.p sensor & takes pic of such low q!...instead of giving more m.p,moto should have done its homework to give's paying consumers a Good Quality camera.it fails against my 7+yr old 2 m.p s.e k750i or my 5 yr old 3.2 m.p Nokia N73 m.e!....with all other things so great, defy's lowest point is probably it's camera!
My previous phone (Samsung Wave) produced astonishing pictures and videos even in low light. Defy's camera problem is low light situations. There is so much noise on the pictures. In good light the quality is pretty good. Despite that it is very good device

I took these in Zürich last week. These are straight off the phone, no compression, no editing.
EDIT: After many cries I resized the pictures, although I believe providing full sized pictures would give more of an accurate representation.

No offense, but those are terrible pictures.
They actually don't look that bad when they're not at full size.
Yea umm, the next posters need to resize their pics before posting otherwise potential GNex owners might get the wrong impression.
Sorry, but I tend to agree with the other posters. Those pics are a horrible representation of the camera. I've taken much better night shots with the GNex, and I also have better night shots in Zurich that I took with my EVO a year or two ago. Awesome city though. The train station during Oktoberfest was very cool.
Edit - sorry, didn't mean to be so negative. I have to say that I've taken plenty bad pictures with dedicated point-and-shoots. I'm not really a photog type, but I have friends that are so I can honestly say nothing short of a nice DSLR and plenty of time playing with exposures, etc is going to get you a nice night shot. Even a very nice camera will take bad shots. Starting to ramble...that second pic is walking straight out of the train station though, right? Wow, it's very crowded. Anything in particular going on that night?
Are these any better?
Better, yes. Just got mine and I haven't taken a picture yet, but I'll miss the stellar camera in the SGS II. This is almost the same module as the Nexus S, correct? Perfectly usable camera in decent light.
After seeing shots from the GSII and owning a iPhone 4S... This thread saddens me. :/

difference is panoramic is 360 degrees but in a circular motion. photosphere would be in a spherical motion, thus covering a larger area.
however, i didn't like the outcomes though.
I am quite excited though, to see the implementations of the user interface(the one finger gestures) in sense. That would be awesome
Running maXimus v5 and everything works perfect. After flashing, I got a new camera app and a new gallery app. Opened photosphere and snapped my whole living room without difficulties. Photo was saved on sdcard/DCIM/Camera, jpg format. Understandably, the image is flat when viewed on my desktop but viewing it on the gallery app that was installed with the jb 4.2 camera, it can be viewed with sphere scrolling. Need to note that my battery turned from 33 degree celsius to 45 after two minutes of using the camera!!
I presume you can only view the "sphere" properly with the gallery app that's included, so posting it here won't allow other users see the effect

Imagination goes a long way. Of course it's better to view it to the original gallery app but the stitches seen on the flat render stays ugly. I like where this is going, though.

The stitching quality is very disapointing even withe the gallery app i still view it flat :sly:

nvm, I've seen that it is a problem with CM10.
It doesn't work yet as it should. I have tried .zip from link above same version from the same position with One X and S3. Feeling during taking photos and results are completely different. It feels like One X sensors are misbehaving.

a) As I've pointed out numerous times, panoramas have a problem with nearby subjects because of parallax. Your subjects are mostly far away, and don't have clearly-defined edges which are obscuring more distant scenery, hence parallax is less of an issue. That makes this about as easy a subject as you could hope for. Doubly so since the sky is overcast and so the exposure level doesn't vary so much from frame to frame.

b) There are clear stitching errors in your pano, too. Surprisingly many, actually, given how far away the subject is. Open the thumbnail below to see some of them circled. There are more, I'm sure, but I got bored of finding and circling them. Some are worse then others, for example the repeated treelines, repeated island, blurred island edge, and the zig-zagging horizon.
I'll add, by the way, that the stock HTC 2D pano tool is also absymal. It appears to make absolutely no effort to warp images, and simply aligns and fades them instead, leading to clear zig-zags in what should be straight lines like horizons.
The thing is, much MUCH better results should be possible. Attached is a pano shot not with the HTC One X, but with my Sony RX100 compact camera. (I've resized it to the same height as your pano.) It's a much more challenging subject, although nowhere near as bad as expecting to get a decent pano standing in the middle of a small room.
My image is -- other than brightness / contrast / color adjustment because there was a strong difference in exposure level and the bright sun / water biased the exposure too dark -- straight out of camera. No hand-tweaking of alignment was done, nor any local retouching of any kind.
It's stitched by the camera itself, which doubtless has a far less powerful processor than the HTC One X does. If the Sony can do this, the HTC One X should be able to do far better -- but so far it can't.
wrong nexus
Hey guys,
i've been trying to use photosphere for a couple of days on my Nexus S with custom ROM Xylon (android 4.2.1)
and i miss some things like the ability to share the pano to google maps, and also when i touch the edit icon (3-circle-venn), i get the "you don't have any app to complete this action" message.
As soon as i heard of the G+ player, i tried sharing it on g+ and here's the result (after trying many times):
plus[dot]google[dot]com/photos/115668189587438646263/albums/5824906965871823873/5824906969810603650
although i wanted something like this:
plus[dot]google[dot]com/photos/110023707389740934545/albums/5808606988734372865/5808606991682743250
(couldn't post links because it's my first post, sorry.)
could anybody help in this point? thanks in advance.
also: how to do that little planet effect? (i suppose it's on that EDIT button)
Hey, guys!
I found this lwp with lots of free HD photospheres.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hamsterbeat.wallpapers.fx.sphere
Keeps throwing "Google Services" FC on me, but the camera itself keeps running and works fine :-O Awesome!
Edit: Here's my deck
So the rollout for the premium suite has started in the UK at the end of december, i didnt get it yet but i did realise that some of the features of it have been on my phone since the JB update, those features are "smart rotation" and "low light camera". I'm not sure but i thought low light camera has been on my phone for quite some time.
There were a couple of Premium Suite features that made their way to the GS3 with the 4.1.1 update. Not any big ones though.
Alright, can't wait for the full premium suit!! hopefully it wont have to go through carrier check

Page buddy is a also a feature of the premium suite we received. I wouldn't have high hopes on a quick full premium suite release here, leave it to the carriers, they will slow it down.

I'm not seeing a low light camera option in my stock i747 camera settings in 4.1.1. I only see the option for taking "night shots", but it sounds as though you are describing something different.

I like how they're in the pool in the first pic, and then in the next there is snow everywhere. XD

hahaha you guys crack me up!!! I lve in canada but my sister lives in Miami and those 2 pics were 48 hours part. The second picture is me coming back to the great white north and realising that there was a sh*tload of snow and that my 2nd car was was left outside and was stuck in A LOT of snow so i had to use my VW to pull it out!
Why i posted those pics is really how the low light mode takes great pictures without flash, in the upper picture, the only light is from the tiki hut and the pool, as in the second, the light is from the lights on the wall and the 2 lights on each side of my door.

I'm getting so impatient for the updates. I want to see something new for for my i747. I'm tired of buggy and unstable custom ROMs.
