WIfes gets 4g, mine 3g. What the heck! UGGG! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

After a great 10 years with Tmobile and most recently on my Mike AHRD supported HTC Sensation with blazing speed. I bit the bullet after seeing my neighbors blazing 32down ave speed on Verizon 4g LTE here in Seattle WA USA area.
I was at end of my TMOUS contract and did the switch to Verizon and with not wanting to shell out the big bucks for the latest and greatest SG3. I knew MIKE AHRD was very high on the Galaxy Nexus for CDMA LTE and was a chef here too. I got 2 free new Galaxy Nexus phones from Best Buy. One for me and one for the wife.
Upon turning them both on my wifes did an immediate software update to firmware ending in K, Mine did not update as it already had latest update ending in Q.
The odd thing is my wifes sits on 4g and has very good speed test. WE are in strong 4glte area. However my phone sits on 3g and the very few times I get it to say 4g I get wicked slow speed tests. MY best was 5 down 1 up. But usually about 1.4 down.
How the heck can two of the same model phones get different speeds. My phone flat out sucks! Hers rocks. ... I just rooted mine and unlocked bootloader and was wondering if any one knows of a way to fix data speeds? Uggg.....

have you tried swapping sim cards to see if it the problem follows the sim?

IMM76K vs. Q. Maybe the search nerf update borked the RIL. Maybe that's why the rest of us haven't received it.

Now I have not switched Sim cards... Will try that and report back.
When I called Verizon the leval 2 tech said firmware ending in Q is the newest now and has been working great. Or so he said... Well not for me! I have plenty of time to exchange at Best Buy. I did find plenty of threads claiming big issues with our Galaxys having 3g 4g hand off issues. Does any of the custom roms like AHRD fix this issue?
Thank!:good:

Mine drops to 3g w/ g/f's on 4g, same rom builds, same kernels at times. Just two days ago I was w/ the folks and my dad's Razr Maxx was on 3g while my mother's Maxx was on 4g. Weird how that works out. But just goes back to why some phones OC better than others, other's UV better than some, some have all the issues, some don't. All phones are different.

Is it just me? (LTE GNex, terrible data.)

My Galaxy Nexus has the most unreliable, horrible, inconsistent data connection I have ever used on a phone.
I go from 4-->3--> No Gs all day long. I'm in Houston, which has a fantastic LTE network (when I'm using a different phone....)
I'm currently on CM9 with 4.0.3 leaked radios, the performance has been bad through stock as well though. Maybe I'll go back to stock and try it again or something.
Should I use the 4.0.2 radios again?
Has anyone else felt the same way?
Thanks.
I think you may be the first one to bring this up

In Charlotte,NC my phone has been nothing but outstanding. The only place I go to 3G is at my desk in the middle of a massive building with shielding. It's just awesome. 4 Bars 4G at my house down in South Carolina too.
I actually have had no such issue with stock or CM9. I'm in Dallas but live on the edge of the 4G area and my workplace has the amazing ability to shield LTE signal so I'm switching to 3G twice a day.

I'd love for it to just be verizon having problems here.
I'm not so sure that's the case though.

My experience is exactly the same. My Thunderbolt always had a solid, reliable and fast 4G connection in the same locations. My Galaxy Nexus is just like yours: "4-->3--> No Gs all day long". I'm on 3G at least 50% of the time. That never happened on the Thunderbolt.
I've tried the 4.0.3 radio too and it didn't help. It was no better and no worse for me.

You are not alone. Here is some stuff I collected from other threads:
Verizon claims Galaxy Nexus LTE signal is fine, update still coming to change meter
http://androidcommunity.com/verizon...update-still-coming-to-change-meter-20111221/
What do you guys think? Is there still a problem with the Galaxy Nexus and LTE. I personally think there is some sort of issue that will still probably be addressed in the update and Verizon just isn’t saying so. Here is a quick video I made showing my Galaxy Nexus stuck on 3G sitting next to my XYBOARD 8.2″ tablet with 4G LTE. The XyBoard constantly has not only more bars, but a better and faster connection. You tell me?
---
Missed calls, text that wont send, 6 hour battery life… looks like i had better return the Nexus while i still can. Its a shame, i like the phone, i just wish i could make calls with it.
---
I have noticed drops on the data side in places where i have a friend sitting next to me with full 3g signal on an incredible 2. My wifes nexus has dropped calls at least 15 times since she got it and data has been the same as mine

My phone has serious call dropping/connection loss. I had the tech at my local Verizon store compare it to his Nexus which also had weak signal strength (about -96db). We also compared signal to other phones in the store and found the other phones to have around -84db which is much much better. That spread is the difference between barely hanging on to 1 bar and a solid 3 bars on my Nexus. I don’t think Verizon is being honest because my experience is that the signal is weaker on the Nexus, not just looking at the bars. I am also getting sudden disconnects going from any number of bars to dead instantly. Dropping calls is completely unacceptable. I can understand problems with the cutting edge 4G signal, but the phone call function is the same thing they have done for years. Oh, and don’t forget it’s A PHONE. I have until Jan 15th to return the phone so if they don’t have my phone working 100% of the time like all of my previous phones I will be returning it and reactivating my Envy3. My phone reports 10% time without signal. Cell Standby reports 10% of battery usage. I didn’t sign up for being tethered to a charger all day just to keep my phone from diving into cold brick mode while I sit at work less than 1/4 mile from the cell tower.

As a current owner of all 3 of Verizons top tier Android phones (Razr / Rezound / G-Nexus), I can easily state that there exists a radio performance gap between two of my devices compared to the 3rd. My Razr & Rezound pull solid bar(s) status regularly, my G-Nexus on the other hand is much more temperamental with its signal strength. Of all 3 devices, the Rezound displays the best signal the most often (haven’t been disappointed yet), with the Razr usually pulling a close second. As an overall performer, I have to give it to the Rezound, even if its not my favorite of the three. Now listing them by personal preference (general feel), it goes something like this: Razr – G-Nexus – Rezound. The Rezound would score higher, if it didn’t ’feel’ like so many other HTC phones I’ve owned in the past.
---
Is anyone actually looking at their signal strength reading in Settings/about phone/Signal ? I have compared my Nexus against my wife’s Samsung regular Galaxy , my original Droid, and even a 3 + year old laptop built in Verizon air card 3g signal and the Nexus has a noticeable worse signal reception(no 4G in my area yet). When the other devices are showing say -74-75dbm my Nexus is only receiving -93-100dbm. That is NOT a software fix issue. I am on my second Nexus after Verizon Tier2 techsupport did a signal survey in my area and confirmed a good 3G signal and had me exchange my phone. Same crappy reception numbers and I frequently get a Network Problem Check your internet connection message while using apps. I don’t see a software fix helping and will likely be exchanging my phone for a Rezound or returning alltogether and waiting it out.

I’m a Samsung galaxy nexus user. I have had a problem with the signal of this phone. It has been a problem since I started using the phone. I’m in a 3G area. You would think since it’s a 3G and 4g phone. It should still work. I went to Verizon’s store once already, all they did was chAnge the sim card. That didn’t change the signal none. It worked when we were there. I think it’s funny how my husbands 4g droid bionic works while the Samsung galaxy nexus doesn’t. They are both 4g phones and the verizon helper said we didnt have 4g area where i lived. Like I said its funny how his 4g is able to work still. I really like the Samsung galaxy nexus phone but I need service. It didn’t even work at the Walmart I go to either. The only time it actually gave me signal was when I was in the verizon store. Why wouldn’t it work there it’s their phone. All their phones will work there, but once you leave they won’t work anymore.
---
Tloomos
There’s more going on than just a dfferent representation of signal strength. I’ve run dozens of tests with my Verizon Galaxy Nexus side-by-side with a Verizon HTC Rezound and the Rezound blows the Nexus away every time. I expected the Rezound to perform better on tests like what Vellamo puts it through since the specs on the Rezound are a bit better, but I really wasn’t expecting much difference on the speedtest.net results. The Nexus consistently achieves half the bandwidth of the Rezound.
The more I use the Nexus, the more I like it, but this connection/performance issue doesn’t sit well with me. I’m not sure why Verizon would hide it if they thought that the update was going to improve actual performance and not just the bars, but I’m waiting and hoping. I have until Jan 15 to return it and pick up the Rezound instead. If they can address the connection issue before then, I’ll gladly stick with it.
And for what it’s worth, I would prefer that the bars be more accurate rather than giving me an inflated perception of my signal strength. As long as I know how to interpret the number of bars I have and the connectivity and performance is on par with other comparable devices, I really don’t care if their device shows 4 bars when mine only shows 1.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1441187
Thanks for posting this. I definitely think there is more going on here with the Verizon GNex's signal than just the way it is reported. It's not just 3G either. I had 2 Rezounds before I got my Galaxy Nexus, and actually have had two Galaxy Nexii. I am certain I got much faster 4G speeds, 3G speeds, and a stronger signal on the Rezounds than either Galaxy Nexus.

I absolutely loved this phone also. but was VERY dissapointed after getting it home, it had a very weak signal and was dropping cals, something that ive never experienced with verizon. me and my wife have the razrs so i was able to do a side by side signal comparison here in dallas. my rersults were more dramatic than yours (OP), both razr's had about -85db and the GN was -104 in 4g. needless to say it was returned.

The VZW Galaxy Nexus has signal issues. The constant bouncing from 4G to 3G to nothing and back is so annoying I have to just leave 4G off. I'm hoping it is an issue that can be addressed with a radio update at some point.

I flashed the 4.0.3 radios a week or two back and I noticed it being worse on my phone. Is it safe to just downgrade radios by flashing them?
Also where are the links for the 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 radios? I was on 4.0.1 radios when I first rooted and it worked fine. But when I flashed 4.0.3, then I started noticing issues :/
I bought my Galaxy Nexus in the Houston area over the holiday while staying with family. I had a very reliable 4G connection, even in the outskirts. My mother's Bionic was constantly bouncing between 3G and 4G, though. Out here in Los Angeles I get a full 4 bars of 4G and average above 20,000kbps.
I have the signal dropping/switching issues some days, some days not. It seems pretty split personality to me....same places, different times, different behaviors.
Mine works fine.

I flashed back to 4.0.2 with no problems.
Mine is working fine here.
The phone itself DOES have issues when the switchover MUST occur.....I have 4G all day until I walk into my kids school. Old concrete block building, etc.....drops down to 3G everytime. BUT on the Nexus it takes a while.....Ill have 30 seconds or so sometimes without any signal while it locks back onto 3G. I *think* that can be fixed via firmware/software (since I believe lots of other phones have had similar handover issues)
The biggest issues with 4G seem to be if you are in a fringe area where it can kinda get 4G but not great 4G. You arent in a fringe area though, so Im not quite sure.....try forcing it to CDMA only and see if the radio stays connected reliably. I know its not LTE, but its just a troubleshooting step. A friend of mine has "reception" handover issues on his Bionic, set it to CDMA only and hasnt had one issue for over a week. its not a fix, but it at least makes the phone useable.......or could signify some bigger issues with your phone if you still have trouble with CDMA only.

Sprint galaxy nexus users

The sprint Galaxy Nexus will be launched soon, and I was wondering who will be looking to buy this phone. Since the 1st launch specs have mysteriously been pulled it seems there is no official knowledge of whether there will be a 1.5 cpu, or the same specs as the Verizon version. Sprint's newer ad's only show a picture of the phone with vague basic information.
We know that LTE is not rolling out for a while, bu we still bought the EVO 4G. We also know that the LTE band probably will change in the future, but my Photon is still getting Wimax 4G when I am in NYC. I am looking for my 1st Google experience, with a great display, and NFC. I also hope that the antenna, and GPS issues are fixed!
Man can't believe there gonna real ease this phone on sprint I feel bad for anyone that gets it in the phoenix area

I think its pretty safe to assume it will be 1.2ghz.
Google isn't going to want to fragment their baby in that manner.
If I was still on Sprint I would get it. Well I did get it but jumped to Verizon for it. Now I have a great phone on a great network...
Don't know what GPS issues you are talking about either...GPS is totally fine on the device.
As far as radios, seems like there might have been some bad hardware. If your device isn't defective then the radio's are just fine...
I think Sprint's version will have other issues it might face as a first device on a brand new LTE network.
I don't think there will be any LTE issues for it on Sprint. After all, it will be available almost nowhere to be able to have it drop or be unstable. /potshot

Haha...good point
i'm confident that this will be the same exact version as the Verizon CDMA variant. no gpu updates/no 1.5 clock/no LTE. these are always pipe dreamed whenever a carrier releases it after another has had it. Sammy aint puttin in any more into a phone that wont be a top seller anyway. because only 10-15% of the droid population even know what the nexus is. Apple/HTC/MOTO will get those newbie sales.
pretty much buying this phone cuz i love my nexus S 4g, and just looking for a more capable hardware to run ICS
the 3g will suck like it does now/the LTE rollout will be shaky at best/and no wimax to bail out the crappy 3g speeds
My expectations are right where they need to be. I bought the evo 4g on launch day and after that i learned "it is what it is."
but my major buying point of this over the coveted SGSIII is the fact that i KNOW the GN will run the next iteration of android (Jelly Bean?) before any phone that released this generation will. Ive been around long enough to realize that only newer/vanilla phones get the upgrades. (2.2/2.3/4.0) say what you want about the nexus s, but it was first to run ICS officially/unofficially. meanwhile people with the best hardware spec'd phone SGSII/Epic Touch are running BETAs of it at best...
so the GN will still be relevant a year from now. just the nexus s is still relevant to any1 not on verizion or whoever copped the EU version.
Just sad how late its coming out. And even still, LTE will be a joke for the next year at least on Sprint.
I made the mistake of buying the Evo 4G on launch day expecting WiMax to be good. Wouldn't make that mistake again.

Any ETA for new radios?

Hey there guys about a week ago I visited the Verizon store in BJ's near me and while being there (had a problem when VZW disconected my lines for 4 days) anyways on the display I saw
iPhone 4S
Droid Razrr
Galaxy Nexus
I own also the gnex so here is what I saw on the reception side
Razrr Had full bars of 3G in that place there was no 4G i guess we dont really need internet at such a huge store
iPhone 4S had 2 bars of 3G
Display Nexus had NONE
my nexus had also none and I have the leak 4.0.4 radios...
I really hope the 4.0.5 will bring new radios for US because I love the device but sometimes not having service even on Verizon [previous AT&T user] just sucks
I'd return your phone, personally...
There is only so much that a software radio can do!
And I have no problem with 3G in my area (no 4G here yet) and the two hour drive to a 4G town that I had to make once...I got 4G the entire time.
Many bash the GN's radios, but I'm personally impressed. I get completely comparable service to my Droid X. And many also bashed them...and returned their phones to find improvements.
As far as an ETA goes:
Don't bother. Every place will say different. You could call Verizon three times in a row and they'd all say something different (if they'd say at all). Same goes for calling Samsung directly.
I wont return the phone as this is the replacement phone and its working perfectly
I dont know if you read but i compared it to a display GNEX and mine with 4.0.4 radios both had no service , anyway I hope samsung/verizon give us update soon usually service is good but sometimes it could be little better

How is the modem in the Note 2? Do you experience LOS or signal issues ?

Ladies and gents,
Some of us know 1st hand about crappy Samsung CDMA radios. I have both a e4gt and SGS3 and live relatively close to my local towers, albeit hilly terrain.
That said, for those who are fascinated by the Note 2, other than price, I'm sure a few of us who are considering purchasing wish we could inquire about the samsung cdma radios ?
How do they hold up? Have samsung radios improved with the latest monstrosity ? Have you received any LOS or worse - have 2 bars 1 second, initiate a call, and the signal goes to -101db (or 0 bars)? Do you find yourself repeating what you say to those yoh are speaking with ? And lastly, if you have had a e4gt or sgs3, if you had signal issues with those phones, do you experience any with your new Note 2? Does it seem better, worse ? Keep in mind i am NOT RELATING TO DATA speeds for thise question, just CALL signal and CALL quality.
Thanks!
I picked up ET4G on release day dealing with many months of crappy radio -LOS
GN2 is my upgrade from ET4G misery and its like a breath of fresh air.
Ive found Radio to be very stable , strong signal , fast data transfer and of course no LOS.

For all the tests ive done. The Note 2 is on top at this point imo. I live on the egde of an updraded Lte tower. My S3 will sometimes pick it up and then kick on and off keeping my data in limbo. Now I walk out of my house and the N2 catches it right away with no issues. Also I'll set my S3, my Wife's S3 and the N2 side by side on 3G and the N2 always Wins at loading and web sites or goolge play menus. I know the S3 isn't an ET4G, but it gives you an idea.

Switching from evo lte to sg3...happy?

I know a lot of ppl have switched from the evo lte to the sg3 due to the lte connectivity issue. I have the opportunity to do the same this afternoon and was just wondering if anyone else has done it and if so are you happy you did? Does the sg3 really keep and hold lte connection better? I've been an HTC/sense person since the og evo and I'm willing to drop it if the lte is truly that much better. Not sure how I feel about TW but then again there is always a sip for that. Thanks so much
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I am in the same boat as you. I'm meeting up with someone tomorrow to buy a gs3. I have gotten a few good opinions from people that have owned both phones and are very happy that they switched. I feel like I am making the right move, at the same time it's a hard switch. I also have been an htc guy since the og evo, I had one of the first galaxy phones and I hated it, the gs3 seems to be a sweet phone though. I think Samsung has fixed things like reception and gps. I am going to miss Sense though.
I have both phones and there is a definite difference in LTE reception. The s3 connects to LTE anywhere inside my house. With the Evo I have to take it outside to get a connection and even then its not as stable and as soon as I walk back inside the connection drops.
You do know that if you complain to sprint and they can replicate the lte connection issue they will swap the lte for the sg3. That's what I doing. Talked to sprint supervisor for twenty minutes last night he said the corporate store would just swap it. No need to buy a sg3 unless you just want both phones.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Well I'm in Denver, we don't have lte here yet so I can't really go that route. I'm more fed up with a poorly designed proximity sensor and bad multitasking. I used to buy htc because they worked correctly right out of the box and I feel like they dropped the ball on this one. I'll either sell my evo or give it to the wife since she has a evo design.
I made the switch just over week ago and I am happy I did. There are certain things about the EVO LTE that I like better. (Email app, Camera) but the multitasking on the GS3 is way better. For example. I stream Pandora in the car almost 100% of the time. If I had to take a call and the call lasted more than 2 minutes, Pandora would have to reload the station or I would have to manually restart the app. On the GS3 it resumes music right where it left off. Sense would occasionally reload and sometimes lag. I have had no reloads or lag on the GS3.
LTE connection is better also. GS3 connects to LTE signal faster when I enter an LTE area, and it has LTE signal where the EVO does not even pick it up. I still have the EVO active on another line, and I have done LTE comparisons over the past week when I am out in the car. GS3 was a good switch for me.
Make the switch it will be the best decision you ever made I had the evo had many problems went thru 3 different phones so glad I switched to the s3 much easier to root a lot more development for the phone if thats your kind of thing, the only thing I like better on the Evo is if you wanted to print a PDF document you can do it with the stock rom the Galaxy s3 will only do printing to a Samsung printer unless you buy a after market app like printbot, or something like that doesn't work as good as stock on evo.

Agreed make the switch...I had two evo lte's gave mine to my son when i got a gs3...I called sprint and they swapped out the two evos (my wife and sons)..now we all have the gs3 and couldn'tbe more happier.. the evos just didn't hold 4g lte at all. When I took them to the sprint store they did a side by side comparison in signal and swapped them out immediately. .loving this phone. ..

I carried an EVO for 2 years. Loved HTC. Sammy had let me down with a few smart phones, both android and Winmo. I went through 2 different EVO LTE phones, and had terrible reception problems with both. Full bars with EVO, zero bars, no signal, and wouldn't switch to roaming with the LTE. Both were active. Checked out my buddies GS3 one day to make sure that the GPS and cellular radios were good. Bought one about 3 weeks after launch. Had to wait for BB to get the pebble blue in stock. Most wonderful phone that I have ever owned. I thought that my EVO was irreplaceable.....I was wrong. Handed EVO down to wife. She wants my Sammy, just as much as my daughter.
LOVE MY GS3!

My wife has been asking the same question she has the LTE and I have the S3 she likes it but she gets upset that my phone will connect to 4G and hers won't even when sitting them side by side. She is probably going to be making the switch tomorrow.
Everyone's making the switch tomorrow it seems... Is it because the GS3 is going to be 50$?
