The stock SGS3 rom has tethering options for bluetooth. Do these then charge you extra for a tether account with sprint? Or can I use this without concern? I know I can (and will) root, but I wanted to understand the stock capabilities. This is my first Sprint Android phone, and my first non-google experience phone.
Thanks!
Where in the settings can I turn on bluetooth tethering?
No they won't charge u for it but unless you add it it still won't work just like the WiFi/USB tethering. Check the box and watch. 3g will disappear and then a message will come up saying registration failed blah blah.... in other words,ur not paying for it so it won't work. I should add tho if ur holdin back on rooting (can't understand why u would be), foxfi tether works on stock no root with Bluetooth. Regular tethering still borked in it tho

I have a Q, Im running the CM RC-2 and Wireless Tether isnt working, but if i go into setting->Wireless & Network Setting, on the bottom it says Tethering and Portable Hotspot.
If i Connect via USB and activate it, WILL I GET CHARGED thru Sprint ? Or is like using Wireless Tether program other then its being connected thru USB and not a Wifi Hotspot/Router.
I personally have UNLIMITED DATA for my Evo, I have the Everything Plus Family Plan which has Unlimited Data.
Thanks
If you don't have the $30 hotspot, the native tethering will usually fail.
If you don't have the $30 hotspot and want to tether anyway (usually "free" in that Sprint doesn't do anything about it at this point in time), and if you are rooted, you can use Wired Tether for Root Users or a few other apps, such as the ones for non-rooted users.
If you aren't rooted, your selection narrows to PDA Net, EasyTether, and a few other select choices, often where you're required to install software on the computer you're tethering to and these apps often range between $10-30 for the full version (allowing HTTPS), or free/cheaper for HTTP only.

Thanks for the info but that does not really answer my Question. See pics below. If i check one of the boxes, Will i be charged anything ??? Its like a integrated Tether i guess ??
CyanogenMod's tethering (via the Settings>Wireless networks) is 100% free unless Sprint decides to start doing some DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) on all cellular traffic, which is seriously unlikely given that the technology for that is extremely expensive, and Sprint needs to be focusing on rolling out more 4G towers rather than getting special hardware to watch what you're doing online.

Does that apply to both USB Connected and Hotspot/Router ??
Thanks I appreciate Everyones help and quick answers
So i am a little confused... I just got the latest OTA and now i have an option under settings-->Wireless & networks called Tethering & portable hotspot and from the looks of it i can use my phone as a wi-fi hotspot and i do not have root. So can we now use this feature with no additional cost to our plans? How does this fit into t-mobile releasing new wi-fi tethering plans starting at $15 a month.
I just got the update too. USB tethering works fine, and to my surprise, so does the hotspot. I say surprise because I have not added the $15.00 plan to my account. The only thing is there is no direct shortcut available so i used Anycut to make one.
not too sure but....
I am very new to these phones in general so I am not too savey from reading other posts it sounded like t-mobile was going to give that feature free at first for a little while until they get it all straightened out. I also read that they would not use the wifi calling as your mins but I see on mine (I just got teh update like in hours ago) that it says wifi calling uses plan mins... which is just fine for me cuz i never go near my mins... so i dnk if that helps but i think for now the tethering is free but they will charge it later... but dont quote me.

For them to start charging you they need to have a plan first. But even so, if they ask you to pay up I suggest canceling your current plan without an ETF and signing on for the non-contract plans. You'll save money, get a subsidized phone, and once we have root, you'll have wifi tethering again
I can't get the usb tethering to work. Windows can't find the android phone driver. I've installed the android sdk. Did you do anything special to get the driver?
When I try the hotspot, my computer can connect to the phone but the phone does not get an internet connection.

My goal is to USB tether my laptop.
I used pdanet successfully before the update just fine but now I have the update and want to try to use the built in usb tethering.
I manually installed the update to the G2 so I had tethering and the wifi hotspot. The wifi hotspot worked awesome with my laptop and I went to try the USB tethering to my desktop, but windows 7 couldnt find the correct driver to use. I hunted around the forums and google'd a few different things, but came up empty. I am wondering if anyone else has found the solution to this yet and could please share.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and my G2 is running 2.2 build 1.22.531.8
Thanks in advance
i saw the new settings as well but i dont think it will be free... tmo did release (or is going to release) a tethering plan for $15. I've been using wifi calling at home, i checked my usage and is coming under T-Mobile HotSpot--- im under a grandfathered plan
i guess if you are planning to use the hotspot i would be careful not to incur any data fees
FYI
I have just checked my bill... I have used Wifi Hotspot from my G2 and used just over 5GB of data. No charge. I have 4 days left of my bill cycle, will update when my bill comes out.
...one more thing, are all of you not able to use the wifi hotspot settings? I see a lot of people rooting their phones to be able to run a wifi hotspot. If so, why are only a few people able to do this, including myself.
If you need more information on my G2, let me know.
thanks.
When my desire Z had the stock rom it had no problems with wifi or usb tether, so it might be T-Mobile trying to sell their tethering plan with the g2.
True, although I checked with tmobile online and gave them a call and they said they are not charging me extra for me using my WiFi hotspot.
Well.
Rooted/Rom'd/Kernel'd my phone earlier today, went just fine (netarchy 421more beta, ava v10).
Only problem is when i wifi tether, the 3rd party apps won't work. Sprint's hotspot works fine but when i try to connect with barnacle/a couple others it connects, then about 10 seconds after connected i lose internet access, but the wireless signal is still being recieved. I fiddled with settings etc and no luck.
Sprint's stock app works fine, and 3g tether is my primary connection source as i live in the middle of nowhere (good for everything but fps games, 200ping not cool). My connection shows 3 {+/-1} bars most of the time, speeds top out at 200kb/s dl. If i use sprint's hotspot app in my rooted phone do i still have to pay 30$/m for the hotspot service?
i don't recall any outside links in my post. (edit, declares all (at) symbols outside links.)
edit; lack of responses. easier question; Does a rooted phone using sprint's hotspot app still have to pay 30$/mo for use of it?

ok, so your using barnacle to do you tethering. Unless sprint hotspot is unlocked with calkuins hack, then yes you will have to pay for the tethering using, i believe it wont work if havent already paid for the feature. I suggest checking back with the Original Poster's ROM thread. Try using wireless tethering! the best out there, try this link
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Note: all the PRE-releases are EXPERIMENTAL, and can cause Fcs (force close) so if you dont feel comfortable with a pre-release, dl a stable set, ex: 2.02 (something like that) give me back results if this works for you bro.
ava v10 came with the latest version of that, i don't understand why it isn't working correctly.
I can connect/recognize but as soon as i try to load a page it goes using that.
That'd be with 100% signal strength + connected and "no internet access"

ava 10....haha, ok. The sprint hotspot it hacked. Whatcha do is:
1)activate wireless tethering, and sprint hotspot should activate too.
2)connect to your wireless tethering, not the hotspot, then turn off wireless tethering, and your pc will lose the connection.
3)try turning wireless tethering back on, and connect as fast as possible. It should go through this time. Happens to me and a few others that run roms with calkuin's tether hack.
Report back with result.

otherwise i'll just load his up as i don't really have another option...

well lets fix this, you are new right? what kind of rom are you wanting so i can give you the link to a good rom.
Just look for MIUI 11.12 or 11.19
Virus base and Virus Anthrax series
also FRESH
Myn's WARM twopointwo
and another good rom is CM 6.1
last but not least Ultimate Droid
I am s-off, and rooted running that awesome GingerbreadSense ROM, and i thought just for kicks I'd try the stock mobile3G hotspot too see if it works, since it's my only means of accessing the internet from my laptop...and my jaw dropped because it works flawlessly and very faast....but my question is...am i paying out of the ass for tethering? or is it the loophole affect, or am ijust lucky?
Did you get any sort of verizon message about charging for the service? If not, you're fine. There's also other apps that you can use to tether (for free). The one that I've found that works best is called "wireless tether", you can google it and download it from the code.google page. Another good app is "barnacle wifi tether" and you should be able to get that one on the market.
Also, I'm not sure if you're new with verizon and on a tiered plan, but if so, watch out because tethering uses a lot of data. Nice thing about "wireless tether" is that it keeps a total of how much you've downloaded/uploaded during that tethering session.
I use Wireless Tether all of the time, but today, it suddenly stopped working. My computer recognizes my phone, but when connected, it gets no internet connection. My phone has a solid 4G connection where I am now. Wonder what happened? Any fixes you guys could guess? I haven't changed ROMs, radios, kernels, etc. Nothing changed.
I am using this version of Wireless Tether I think: http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...tail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk&can=2&q
Thanks!
Edit: I tried uninstalling, rebooting, etc., and it still won't work!
The Nexus have integrated Wireless Hotspot app in the Settings. I think you have the Verizon due to 4G and needed to use a third party app so your career don't find out you were tethering since you aren't paying for the hotspot plan, which is against their policy I guess.
Now if you were using an international Nexus, which ATT and T-Mobile don't have the IMEI number in their database, things is a bit easier.
In any case, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling. Or if you don't mind USB cable tethering, try EasyTether.
If you're running a custom rom on Verizon, then the developer has most likely taken out the Verizon partitioning, to make the in house wireless tether seem as though the data being used up as if it's "Browser" or something.
The thing is, nothing on my phone has changed since yesterday. My dad's tethering on his Bionic has also stopped working. This has to be something with Verizon then right? Are they somehow blocking us?
have you tried Foxfi?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en
be careful, once you get caught, they will make you sign up the hotspot plan.
Thanks for the replys guys. I actually had a static IP address on my laptop that was screwing things up. Wonder why that affects wireless tether but not a regular router?
