Just got the phone and so far so good even on touchwiz. I actually said I'll probably will go stock rom for a bit, I think a bit just bit ok nevermind. First of all, I cant believe the packaging. Its awesome not to have the cheap at&t packaging. Now when I get home I'm probably going to root. Have you guys seen battery improvement?
Also I got a bumper case for it but now concerned the camera optics will get dirtier easier, do any of you use a bumper to verify?
So many more possibilities with a rooted phone plus custom Rome. Personally I don't ever see myself getting an android phone and not rooting it as well as using custom roms

So true, what was I thinking lol. Hopefully light flow will work flawlessly soon with this device.
I just picked mine up Sunday. Haven't rooted yet, but will this weekend. I'm curious though, if battery life shows much improvement with CM9 or other roms available. I'm not entirely sure I'm happy with stock rom battery life...

It cant be worse. If push comes to shove I'll just use my juice defender ultimate app which has done its job in the past.
I'm pretty concerned about this bumper case thing. I'm almost set on exchanging it for the otter box case, dont even care how bulky it makes it. I want total protection for this new baby. Any other otter box users here.

I bought the "Defender Series" Otterbox case for mine, so far so good. Like you, with this phone I want to keep it as protected as possible. It's not too bulky, at least not how my Otterbox was on my ATRIX 2, but mostly the reason for that is the slimness in design on the SG3 versus that of the ATRIX. I recommend it, but I may be biased because in my job, I have to safeguard my phone with a case like Fort friggin' Knox...

Cool, thanks for the info. I didnt think it would be as thick as on older devices. Yea, you cant be the protection you get with Otterbox defender cases. Definitely going to hunt one down after work.
Anyone else have any input as to the battery life with the stock rom? I am going to root this weekend, and flash (probably) CM9 and still curious as to whether battery life improves greatly. Hoping that's so...

Rooting allows your locked android files to be modified. Meaning certain apps need root access like tethering apps. Has nothing to do with battery life. Now a kernel and custom rom can impact battery life.

Thats what I meant, after rom'ming. But unless I get ridiculous drops in battery, I feel I'll be using that juice defender app or even look into an extended battery later on for the first time in my android life.

Can't attest to others but on average i take the phone off the charger at 7 am, usually 3+ hours of screen time with LTE internet in the mix, 6 hours of wifi and usually put the phone back on the charger with 40%+ battery left around 11pm.

Be warned, messing around with your phone is very frustrating...
I'm in the same boat personally. I changed to Nova Launcher and so far I'm really happy with everything.
This is my first android phone however so I'm really curious about rooting and trying different roms etc. I just don't want to **** this phone up because I do a lot of important stuff with it for work etc.

It's only frustrating if you do something stupid or don't understand what it is you're doing. To understand rooting and flashing and modding, you have to read, re- read, and read agsin. Taking your time and practicing some patience, and rooting/flashing makes the Android experience infinitely more enjoyable. Just sayin'...

What method did you use to root? What did you do to cause the soft brick?
I waited a couple weeks before rooting my LTE GS3. Its not bad using Touch Wiz. I use TW and switch over to Nova (paid version) at times.
I am tempted to flash a ROM but I don't want to make sure that I flash a stable ROM. I don't want to flash a ROM and not have the Bluetooth or MMS not work properly.

i am looking for a new phone and i really like the nexus 4g, i am on sprint and i read the reviews on the website and they all generally say bad signal and terrible battery life even with the extended battery.
so..... i would like some people to chime in with their personal experiences with the phone itself.
Thanks,
Boneskid1
I've been happy with it
I've had mine for a few weeks now and am very pleased with my choice. Like any smartphone, the more you do the less battery you get. I'm pretty dependent on mine and get a full day (from when I get up until I go to bed) from it. My GPS is always on, wifi active (when available), and 3G (no LTE in Boise yet). I have many apps gathering info for me, so the data is usually always in use. I did get the free extended battery about a week in and it made it easier to keep it running before charging.
No issues and I have standard battery. Average about 4.5 hours screen on and can go day and half in standby
I've had mine since June, and haven't has any issues with it whatsoever. I'm not in an LTE market (Milwaukee) so I can't comment on that. but 3g, WiFi, and battery, have all been better than I expected. very happy with my decision to go with the galaxy nexus.
dschoenike
Most if not all reviews are outdated.
Search YouTube for the newer reviews because of Jb.
If you do end up with terrible signal or it drops constantly its a hardware issue and needs to be replaced immediately.
I'm using vzw and haven't had any issues of signal.

ok. thank you for the input i am defiantly going to get it.
are there any cases you guys would recommend, i am really careful but accidents do happen and this is a more expensive phone than my previous one.
Thanks,

I love the phone. Screen looks weird stock, but using a custom ROM sorts it out.
I live in a LTE market (East Metro Atlanta), with ~70% LTE coverage.
I love it, so fast.
A huge jump up from WiMax, and better than HSPA+

I say adb, others will say Toolkit.
Toolkit is a click and root " but problems can occur "
I used Adb and it worked fine, got me use to adb as well if I ever needed to use it.

so would the acs version be considered adb? i dont have the device in my hand yet but i am hoping to have it ordered tomorrow so i just would like to figure what route i am going to take.

Rooting is simple as unlocking bootloader, flash/boot into custom recovery, and flashing SuperSU or SuperUser.
For more info on this, check this thread
The horrible signal is Sprint's fault and Google's device is taking the blame. It's sprints fault.
Battery life, it's fine if your not doing stuff that kills it fast like Pandora or YouTube or GPS.
--------------------------------------------------
If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
I come here and just giggle in amazement at the problems people report (and often cause for themselves).
I have had my International Galaxy Nexus for a month, I'm no expert but rooted it and installed the Google Image of Jelly Bean in no time. The phone is terrific, fast, smooth, easy to use, responsive. The standard battery isn't great so I got a really inexpensive charging dock and that solved that issue.
In that month I haven't seen a single glitch or problem of any sort. Not one!
People whinge about the camera. Oh well my needs are somewhat basic but if you are just facebooking or using it for on screen viewing I found the camera just fine - at least it's really fast.
My son has an S3 and for most uses you just can't tell them apart!
Man ive had this beast of a phone for a little over a week now and I must say I FRIGGIN love it.. Everyday i have come across something i didnt know this phone could do.. the s pen is awesome.. I've had this phone for two weeks now and like the OP, I find new things with it every day. Battery life is great! UI is smooth! I haven't had any issues with it. Only android device I've owned prior to this was a rooted htc hero (sprint). I went to an iPhone for awhile and I'm glad I waited till now to switch back! Once you've got a taste of a big screen. You don't want to go back to anything smaller.
Looking forward to rooting this baby and trying out the different roms!
Also, glad to be back in the xda community! :victory:
Agreed that this phone is awesome. It's honestly the best phone I've ever owned by far. The S-Pen is quite cool as well. I'm always finding uses for it.

The bloat you can fix by rooting and using Titanium Backup. I'm fine with the phone, I just need to know that the bootloader will get unlocked, and there will be dev support. The entire xda section for this phone is dead. Not a good sign.
Exactly my worry, this place is a ghost town. And there is something very wrong with our stock OS. The battery usage is ridiculous and this chip should bench higher too.

The battery has been up and down for me. Twice I've had something get stuck that killed the battery, once it was the phone, and I hadn't made any calls that day. It was fine after a reboot. The android OS seems to keep it awake a bit much, and the phone is NEVER in deep sleep as much as other devices. Try eco mode?
Also, this thing is benching fine? Same as the Korean version? I posted a bunch of bench screens in the "show homescreen" thread. The N4 was benching horribly last time I was looking at reviews...
Well I guess my only comparison were the 10k quadrants the qualcomm dev system was putting up with this chip. But yeah I mean it is blazing fast, fastest phone I've ever seen... That's why I'm having such a hard time deciding.

This thing with its stock AT&T ICS rom, stock kernel, stock clocks, is benching about the same as my SGS3 was with a Jelly Bean ROM, kernel, and OCed to 1.7ghz. In some cases, its beating it. My friend has the Sprint SGS3 (krait dual core) and I'm obliterating him in benches. Browsermark is about the only thing he's even with.
As a phone, for normal people, is great. I could easily recommend this to friends. Battery life is the only thing we can debate on. For us? We need XDA dev support. I know for myself, I *have* to get back to Jelly Bean, and some form of AOSP rom. (I'm partial to AOKP)
So I have a week to see what's going to happen. Hopefully with the N4 coming out today, we'll see something. If its still a ghost town with no word by next week, I'm going to have to decided to either return it, and save my upgrade or sell it on XDA.

That dev board shows what the SoC is capable of, but no way will performance be the same on this. This already has thermal throttling issues, so pushing it too much would be crazy.

Exactly what I'm thinking, not because of dev support, but because there are many little issues I can't deal with with this phone. Either the Nexus 4 or the One X+.
Good luck getting a Nexus anytime soon, I tried AT launch this morning. Some members got some, others like myself spent 20 minutes trying over and over, getting lag and errors until the phone was removed from our carts, and is now sold out.
I tried. I have to return the LGOG by Monday... hopefully something happens by then.
This phone is brand new...you can't expect it to be PERFECT..its pretty close though lol. And all I see is people pointing out the bad. Battery life...you have 4 cores! Your phone isn't gonna get the battery life your used to..and benchmarks? Idk what you guys are pulling but I get 7500+. That's plenty fast for me. And LG is hurting. The OG is gonna make or break them. I think you need to have faith in this manufacturer. Its the first of its kind in the US. Its too big of a deal to not update. Mght be a couple months but for those of you who switch because of locked bootloader will regret with what I believe will come in the future. Jellybean will do wonders for the UI..which is not bad at all...I suggest you give this beast a chance..I don't think you will regret it.

Sure sure Mr LG employee! I do agree this phone will be the survival or death of their mobile. But my doubts come from owning prior LG devices, their problems were all software and never fixed by LG. It didn't matter though because we had a decent dev community, looked bootloaders though on an LG phone worry the hell out of me. This phone is a beast I love the build quality but I am still sceptical, I'm going to ride this ship though hopefully we steer clear of icebergs!

I have had this device a little over a week and i love it i get way better battery life than i did oit of my atrix 2 and so far nothing i due can produce lag the phone responds as fast as i can touch the screen i love my device i think build quality is second to none and my city launched lte recently so with 40 mb plus download speeds i think this device is supurb i have rooted and installed custom roms on every device i have owned but so far with the optimus g i see no need to my only complaint is the camera i feel it could be better but hey its still a phone !

Is it worth it in your opinions? And are there any good stock roms with carrierIQ and all the spyware crap taken out of the kernel ?

I just upgraded from mt4g and haven't looked back. At first I was concerned about the size of the Note 2, but it turned out to be non-issue. The phone is awesome. Just don't count on one handed operation... Development section has some nice roms with spyware and carrierIQ removed.

You can turn it off:
Settings -> Backup and Reset -> Collect Diagnostics
Uncheck Allow Diagnostics
Then you won't need a custom ROM. I don't even have root yet *gasp*, just not worth the pain since the software is excellent.
Although you will have to adjust to the size coming from a 3.7"
I'm coming over from the MT4GS as well. Gonna have to get used to this Samsung stuff...

I also came from a mt4gs. The biggest reason I kept going back to sliders all these years was my big hands couldn't operate the virtual keyboards well (I'm 6'3 not a small guy). I love my mt4gs but this phone is light years beyond it. I love the size and speed of it. I can get two days of battery life with the stock battery (no anker battery here). Hell I've basically stopped using my tablet because of this phone. It is absolutely worth every penny.

That was another question I had . Is 5.5" really big enough for the device to function effectively as a tablet? Or do you feel it works but still undersized?

Depends on the tablet. This phone effectively replaces my nexus 7, but I dont think it woukd replace a 10" tablet as they kinda serve different purposes. I'd say a 10" is if you want to replicate a laptop experience and size for content consumption, but a 7" is if u want a bigger size but not as large as a 10" because 9/10" tabs are very unweildy

I've seen a couple other guys from MT4GS post here.
My transition will have to happen after my wife's backordered S3 in white gets in stock. Retentions screwed up the order and it sat on a desk for 2 days before it got sent to the warehouse.
Samsung stuff is the little differences in flashing and recovery from the HTC devices. It as hard to screw up a MT4GS. I am reading of people jacking their phones up often enough here. There seems to be a learning curve but there is no way of knowing if these guys are like crimedave...
Good thing is the Note 2 already has a notable dev community starting...

Once we get some aosp love this device will be 10x better. Its really just a larger/faster galaxy s 3.

Well this will be my first samsung device since my SGH T539 Beat so I'm pretty excited to see how it's progressed since the days of flip phone.

After reading a few posts, I see that a few people besides myself came from a GNEX. How many of us are there, and how are you liking the One? I love it, but wish we had S-OFF. I know it will be soon though.

I came from the gnex. I love the one! My one was sent to sonic for s-off! The one gets better after a good debloating or a custom rom!
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 4
I also came from the gnex and was lucky enough to unlock before VZW killed the tool. Been rooted on stock for a while now, and while I can say that Sense 5 is decent enough, I really missed the stock android feel. And using Nova Launcher just wasn't good enough.
So this morning I flashed it to the CyanogenMod 10.2 nightly. I have to say I feel at home again, aside from a few bugs that aren't necessarily show stoppers. Now using the interface I had before, I have to say I don't miss the gnex all that much.
It's not much bigger, and is a whole lot faster. Gotta admit, though, the reason I picked this over the GS4 was the front facing speakers. EVERY PHONE SHOULD HAVE SPEAKERS ON THE FRONT! The nexus speaker was just sad.
<shrug>
I was a day one purchaser of the GNex. Thought I was the coolest kid in town. Then the battery issues started. And the reception issues. I would have to carry a backup battery to make it thru the day. If that phone didnt have a removable back cover and had that battery, I would have upgraded long ago. I had the standard and extended battery (from Verizon) and both covers started to lose their fit.
I love the premium feel of the One. I'm getting much better reception in my location. LTE speeds are quite improved. And the glorious battery life, it may not be the best, but coming from a GNex, it's worlds better. The screen, hardware, reception, and battery were reasons enough for me to upgrade.
I will miss the multitude of ROMs the GNex had and its openness, excluding the Verizon aspect. Moving from stock to sense will be an adjustment, but one I'm kinda interested in. I'm getting used to the cap keys again. This is my first HTC phone personally, although I have rooted and s-offed some of the older models. I've been around touchwhiz and decided it wasn't for me. Also, the plastic feel of the s4 wasn't very appeasing.
Overall, I'm happy I made the decision to move on the One. The GNex is retiring and heading out to pasture with the OG Droid.
Peace,
:good::good::good:

I came from the Galaxy Nexus.
I came from the gnex and could not be happier. The only issue I have with the phone is I keep hitting the speaker button with my cheek when I am on the phone.
I LOVE sense 5 I was a huge stock guy before but I pleasently surprised

I also came from the Galaxy Nexus. While I do miss how easy it was to unlock and root, I'd gladly trade it for my One. Especially now that Sonic is going to S-Off my One.
The battery life and reception issues ultimately ended up being a deal breaker for me.

Is your proximity sensor off? My HTC One detects my face being near the phone and shuts the screen off. When I pull the phone away, it comes back on.
Me too
I came from the GNex and love my new One! I miss the GNex in a few ways but I'm s-Off'd, unlocked and rooted on the One. Go Sonic!
I came from the GNex. No looking back even without root.
did the shuffle to get here from the GNexus and am very satisfied. Phone feels, looks and operates great, even with S-ON. I plan on shipping mine out to get it S-OFFd and see if I can't get back to the 'stock" feel.
Wow there really are a lot of GNEX owners that came to this phone. I am extremely satisfied with the One myself.

Came from the GNex and flashed tons of roms and mods. Started with the S4 out of impatience and ended up switching to the One. Definitely enjoy the One far more than the S4 out of the box. S-Offed, unlocked and rooted but have no desire to flash anything right now. I'm sure that'll change at some point but this is the first phone that I haven't wanted to dump the manufacturers skin of android immediately.

Another former Gnex user here! Loved that phone, but it was time to move on. I miss the hacking and massive dev support, but android is so flexible even Verizon can't ruin such a beautiful phone
Going from an hour of screen time to over 4x that some days, Im in love
Can't wait until the hard working devs crack this bad boy open and really allow us to show what its made of!!

Had a GNEX for almost 2 years. Loved it. Did a quick stint with the S3 which I was not all that fond of. The HTC One is by far, the best smart phone I have ever had. Even without unlock and root, still an amazing device.
I came from the nexus too. Got the gnex right on launch day and same with the one. Missed out on the unlock though so I might go back to the gnex for a week if I decide to send the one to sonic.

Also came from the GNex. The speed, battery and radios of the One are definitely in another class compared to the GNex. Hopefully things will open up for the One when 4.3 or 4.4 roll around (Verizon...). Still thinking about sending away for S-off.
I too came from the GNex. I was one of those guys that thought I must have an AOSP based UI, but I have no problem using the Sense UI. Not as ugly and bloated as TouchWiz. I am currently back on my GNex using CyanogenMod 10.2 while my phone is being S'Off'ed. I cannot stand the bloatware that Verizon added to the phone. While back on the GNex, I am plagued with radio problems because of it being on 4.3. I am an extremely happy HTC One owner.

hello
My first Android phone was the OGDroid. After that it was the Incredible 2, then the GNEX, and now the One. I still miss the OGDroid, but obviously I've moved on to bigger and better things.
