2 things I would love to see and have really been missing in this phone so far
1. Ability to see more than 6 recent Apps when holding the home button, like 9 or 12
2. Customizable power widgets in the notification bar, I would love to be able to add brightness on there and toggle sound from vibe, to silent, to sound. Instead of just vibe to sound

I agree. However, in regards to brightness you know you can adjust brightness "on the fly". Just turn off auto on your display/brightness. Then put your finger on the notification bar and side left or right to increase/ decrease. Much better than the button, IMHO.

Possibilities with the soft key UI

Does anyone think that there could be great potential in the Galaxy Nexus' soft key area at the bottom of the screen? As soon as they announced that the GN would have on-screen buttons, customization came to mind right away.
We've already seen Paul O'Brien's begin with his UI patches here, but I feel like we are only scratching the surface of what can be done.
For example, with my limited pondering, I was hoping that a dev or maybe CM could soon allow us to put shortcuts on that bottom bar for quick access to the certain apps that you always use. For me, I would love for Google Talk to have a permanent shortcut on that bar that I can access from anywhere as I use it almost religiously. Also, a shortcut that emulates the power button would be highly convenient as well so that I don't have to reach up to the side button as often. I can also foresee some themeing or button rearrangement and so forth.
Do you guys have any other ideas? As I'm not a dev of any sort, maybe I'm out of line in thinking that the bottom bar is flexible enough to customize. However, if it could be done (and Paul O'Brien already has demonstrated that maybe it could), the possibilities could be endless.

As a webOS user, I'd love some swipe gestures implemented for 'back' and a swipe up to open the app drawer

a swipe up for the drawer would really nice

Damn, I didn't even think of swipe gestures at all. Now my mind is really running wild.

I wish we could swipe down to make the thing disappear, which allows us to take advantage of the full 4.65 inch screen.

Swipe up - appear again

I think would be awesome if we could swipe the regular buttons to the side, showing new options (like we do with dock bar in almost every popular launcher). There, we could use app shortcuts, power widgets and other stuff, like the search and the option buttons.

I agree, I hope this is just a tip of the iceberg, it seems pointless to have all this potential and not utilize it.

how about instead of the soft keys have it scroll:
"wwwwwaaaaaasssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuuuppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!" w/ flashing text.
seriously though, being able to make them appear/disappear anytime would be a big plus in my book.
or say if you're playing a game/watching a movie, and someone calls you... rather then having the call notification pop up & take over, have the notification just appear in the soft key area.(i guess same for texts)

I think instead of putting toggles with the notification bar, a scrolling dock with these would be even better.
Like you guys said, swipe on the dock to the left or right to reveal Wifi/BT/GPS/etc. This seems easier than swiping down on the notification bar to bring it down.

On honeycomb we could hide them and theme them. Change animations and icons.
They didn't figure out how to add more or change up the order or add functionality because honeycomb wasn't open source like gingerbread and ICS.
So yea. Expect lots of cool stuff.

Since Android came out, I was hoping we would switch to soft-keys. Now we can fully customize the buttons, select preferred positions, preferred icon style, and which icons you actually have...

I'd be pretty content to just Swap the Menu and task manager buttons... I dont need a permanent task manager button that takes as much time to operate as it does to just navigate to the apps icon itself.. the menu button on the other hand I use in just about every app I launch.

I thought this too until I actually got down to using it on the GN.
I never used the task switcher on my other Android devices as it seemed too difficult and took too long for it to be worth it. However, having been using the GN for a couple of days now, I find its implementation (just a single tap) to be much more friendly and useful. I find myself using it all the time now to switch between what I am doing and can't imagine not having it.

I'd just like to know what devs to talk to in order to make it happen

I was hoping for some app specific keys. For instance in the browser have a Forward, Back, Stop/Reload, Home, etc.

id love to see the buttons replaced with like gif animations. so cool

But, why not just allow the "Home" button to be the task-switching button via long-press like before? Is that extra pause for the long-press what you're referring to when you say it took too long?
Anyway, I, too, would like the Menu button back, but more importantly I want the Search button back. I can't wait for the ability to get rid of the G Search widget, put a dedicated Search button back in the soft touch area, and have the Home button as the task-switcher.

[Root][App] GMD HideSoftKeys

I'm developing app that allows to hide soft keys without modifying the system and without reboot. In only hides soft keys and leaves notification bar intact. After hiding soft keys I replace them similar auto hiding bar with Back, Home, Recent Apps and Menu buttons.
It does NOT modify system files. If something unplanned happens, just reboot your device and it will restore your stock navigation bar.

I just try your app and have few comments.
- Softkey could we biger, just like original. It is not necessarily to be smaller because - they can be hidden
- Vibrate on key press is missing thing for me
- After few turning on and off my phone reboot (Gnex, stock 4.2.2., I9250XXLJ1, JDW39)
I am not developer but I was always askin why someone don't make hiden navigation bar (buttons) and activate it just like we swipe our notification bar. Just like that and but very smooth. Al that PIE's and invisible areas was too laggy and don't enough responsive to me. You are very close to my idea and if this will work I think your app have potencial.

- Added option to hide QuickNav bar when empty space on bar is pressed.
- Added option to keep/hide QuickNav bar when pressed anywhere else on scren.
- Added option to delay bar hide after pressing soft button. Pressing new button resets delay.

hello, developer. Pro buyer here. Your app is very nice indeed and works great. I'm using it on my gnex with rooted stock rom. I just have the following observations:
1. It seems the app makes scrolling of the recent apps stuttery.
2. May I request for an option to use the stock 3-dot menu icon, instead of the 3-bar menu icon? The 3-dot icon blends better with the stock icons, in my opinion.
3. The menu icon randomly appears. (I have disabled it.)

Is there a way to add quick buttons to the notification drawer (the one you open by just swiping down on the screen, I mean), instead of tapping the upper-right button first?
There are very few options I use very often (like wifi on/off, plane mode on/off, rotation on/off) and I wish I could have those buttons directly in the notification drawer, instead of doing one more tap on the related button.
Any idea?
I've looked over the Internet but I can mainly find either apps that include other apps in the drawer or development explanations. I would just like to have a "widget" at the top of the drawer.

This doesn't really answer your question, and you probably know this, but there are certainly widgets or mini-apps or something that would let you put something on your home screen (or a different screen) to control those things.

Yeah there's a native widget doing this, thank you.
Yet I'm looking for the same thing in the notification drawer.
In the meantime, if you know a widget that I could freely customize, plese feel free to tell

So this is not a complete solution, but it will get you closer to what you are looking for. The pre condition is that you have to be using Nova launcher or any other launcher that supports gestures. So in case of Nova, you change the swipe down gesture to "Expand Quick Settings". This way at least when you are on the home screen, you can quickly get to your settings by swiping down or whatever other gesture you use.

Sound Profile Change from Notification Pull Down - ?

I do not see the ability to change my sound profile: sound , vibrate, silent -by pulling down on the notification bar shortcuts...
Is that a possibility in Nougat ? If so, how.
I have an old widget called "Silent Mode Widget" that I can place on my home screen, but have somewhat gotten accustomed to just pulling down from the top of the screen to make the change... Thanks in advance for any tips on this one.

Just found this. swipe down to open quick settings shade, pull down again to access more quick settings, and then you'll see "do not disturb", that has the sound silence settings in it. If you hit edit you can move it up to the top row if you want.

I see that, but that is not what I am referring to. - That is for a period of time for "Do Not Disturb" - It is not the volume toggle button where you have three options for "Sound, Vibrate, or Silent" which is what I'm looking for...

I was looking for the same thing and found a free app that adds the toggle - works great:

If you want some more toggle options, there are other apps as well.

Volume Slider LIKE 'Brightness' Slider would be perfect!
I wish there was an app/tweak that would allow one to install a volume slider like the brightness slider in quick settings that did not require all sorts of other development tools and a desk/laptop! That would be perfect. And again, like others are saying it should have come with the OS.

The real question is, how do we edit the more in depth sounds? Like with my s7 edge I could control the volume of system sounds, ringer, media, and notifications. How would we do that on pixel I can't find any setting that lets me do it.

I use Volume Butler from the Playstore it works great! It also separates the ring volume and the notification volume. Very easy setup.
