signal vs my old GSII - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Let me start of by saying that i absolutely love this phone. I was just making an observation of signal strenght vs my old GS2 which i gave to my son. the GS2 always has one bar more and the DB is always lower (which is better). Also it scores a bit higher consistenty than the GS3.
Anyone else have comments on the signal?

Just flashed the blaze 2 modem to the Hercules I gave to my mom
She gets reception in a valley now without her repeater
There is a new modem on the way for our phone
I'd post it, but alas I'm in trouble

Thanks, but what do you mean you are in trouble? How does that prevent you from posting a new modem?

[Q] terrible 4g signal (compared with Photon)

First, let me say that I love this phone. However, I used to get perfect 4g signal in my home with the Photon, and now the signal is touch and go at best. Anyone have the same issue or know of a fix (besides moving)?
Found this post that seems to have some proven methods for samsung 4g (and 3g) signal and speed boosting!!
i can believe it. motorolas are usually the best when it comes to reception. I know on the EVO there was a way to make it more receptive to 4G signals and it worked great..but im not sure about samsungs though.
Read that as well. Photon signals were tops. Photon got signals where no other phone would even dream of trying to pick one up.
That said I am coming from the Evo, so the whole Galaxy thing is new to me..
I get the exact same signal as my photon. I was doubtful at first but I am actually surprised I get 4g in my room. I don't get it with the evo3d. Photon got it and now sgs2 gets it too.

May be this depends on how strong the signal is. I know my EVO 4G had way better signal than the 3d that I dumped. I have the Photon, and if the signal is great I am coming aboard. The problem is there's no set measurement of how much more or less signal this phone has over the Photon or not. Also hows the regular 3g signal compared to the Photon? I like the fact that there is suppose to be support for the next rev B or 1xdo A signal. This means I can hold the damn phone for a more than a year if I choose to.
I'm a total noob or something cause I can't seem to find [irl.MSL] according to the thread. Little help please?
A reviewer did 'study' of 4G signal strength-reception andnfpund the Photon with the best reception of any Sprint phone.

Don't think it's there, either... But call 611 and they'll tell you immediately. Can confirm the fix works, at least for boosting signal. Speed seems unchanged, but fine... About 4mbps.

[Q] Slow 3G speeds

I am a new Epic 4G Touch owner, have had my phone for about 4 hours now.
My Speed Tests results are terrible and the internet is not really usable. Getting about 21 kbps down and 312 ms up. No 4G in my area only 3G. (Sprint) I am in Detroit.
I was wondering if upgrading my radio would improve internet speeds? Or is there ANYTHING I can do to increase 3G performance?
My phone is not rooted YET.. I want to make sure the phone(s) are keepers before I go screwing around. (I have 3 of them)
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
I've read other complaints here from Detroit about the same issue. Apparently sprint service is bad there. Its a great phone and probably worth keeping if you use wifi a lot. Give it a few days before you decide.
Also what are you using for speed test? I get most accurate results here http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
I think that's what I am using, its the SpeedTest app from the market.
I gave Sprint a call to ask if there was anything I could do and was told that there is an outage in my area that should be resolved tomorrow. I let them know that I will be returning the phones if this didn't improve.
Internet may be slow, but daym I love this phone! upgraded from sprint Hero 200

After a week I posted about the radio. In my experience, EG30 has worked the best. I just flashed FC18 tonight and will run that for a day, see how it goes. I'm on stock el29 software, rooted(obviously).

This is just sprint, either your really lucky with 4g or good 3g or unlucky (like me) and have bad 3g and no 4g, hopefully this changes someday. Until then skip Sprint's proxy's and try different prl's and modems to get the best reception and signal strength.
Try new modems once you root. I used to get horrible speeds with ek02 but they improved with el26. There's no one modem that works best for everyone though... It varies from person to person. Anyways, with those speeds I'm assuming your problem is temporary because 21 kbps is nowhere near 3g

I'll chime in here since I'm in the Detroit area as well, Warren to be specific. I just tested my speed test and got 0.6Mbps down and 0.43Mbps up. Second test results are 0.39Mbps down and 0.41Mbps up. Third test 0.80Mbps down 0.34Mbps up. And just for kicks and giggles a 4th test with results of 0.46Mbps down and 0.55Mbps up. All tested with speedtest.net app and 2:40am. During the day im mostly around 0.30Mbps down speed. You might want to try the stuff in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22782739 the 1st and 7th posts are helpful. Also, update prl and profile.

3G dropping constantly

So my GNex loses the 3G signal every few minutes, or sometimes more often than that. It dropped twice while writing this post. This is pissing me off more than I can put into words. I know others have had this issue, but I think that the connection problems are increased because of where I live... this either doesn't happen to me when I'm at work in another city or happens so little that I never notice it.
Is there anything I can do? Do you think it would do me any good at all to call Sprint?
I'm using the stock FD02 radio running CM9 with Samurai kernel and the Trickster MOD. But this happened just as often before I even rooted.
Help appreciated!
Tell sprint to give you a network extender. If it is the signal at your house that's all you can do.
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
It is a known issue with the Galaxy Nexus that the signal is not the greatest. That is why I left Sprint for Verizon (only to have the GNex).
I had kinda decent signal with my EVO, SGSII and iPhone with Sprint...so I thought getting the GNex, with known signal issue would be the death of me. So I got the phone I HAD TO HAVE with a carrier that would at the very least "boost" the weak radios that Samsung has....and for the record, I have killer signal, unlike I've ever seen before....albeit, I'm paying out the ass for it.
(roughly 20 buck more a month then Sprint)
Now if I were in your shoes, I'd call Sprint. They might be able to trade phones with you, if you're willing to part with your GNex. If not (like I couldn't)...you may want to look into the option posted just above my post, or even do the unthinkable......
....go with Verizon.

I've heard of this, but I thought it was only for actual phone signal, not 3G. It's the AirRave thing what you're talking about?
It is the AirRave that he is speaking of, and it will increase your 3G yes. I had a friend who got an AirRave cause once inside his house, there was zero signal. Turn the AirRave on....and beautiful signal throughout the house (pretty much).
He also got it free.
I've never had sprint so I don't know if their network extender repeats EVDO or not. Verizon's does.
May be that's because the CPU clock is set to 350MHz as a base limit which causes the phone to drop signals when not in use. Try increasing the base limit to 750MHz and see if it make some difference. You can use SetCPU for that.
I'm having the same losing signal problem as well, and I do have the network extender. My problem is the phone says 3g on top but it is really only using 1x. Its a defective radio, Sprint is replacing my gnex.

Sprint is sending me an AirRave so I guess I'll have to wait and see how much it helps.
I have problems with that too. Only in low signal areas though. The data will kick off if I'm in an area that barely has 1 bar for example.

Note that data toggling on / off usually will kick it back on.

My colleague had this exact same problem and he fixed it by flashing a new baseband (radio from a post in this forum); you may wish to try this. And supposedly the Wifi performance will improve too.

While it is worth a try there are two separate radio issues at hand. One is a faulty device and one is a bad baseband.
Also the baseband won't affect wifi performance for the better or worse.

Coverage/Reception

I am currently running Diet ICS from 8/8. I have just moved to a new house. The coverage here kinda sucks. However, I had some friends here this weekend with iphone's and my wife has a Motorola Atrix. Their bars appear to always be higher than mine. I have tested this throughout the weekend with data, calls and texting. Theirs all work better than my S3. Is this a function of the phone, the Rom, the radio? Is there anything I can do to the phone to improve it, ie:new ROM or radio? If so, which ones? BTW I am in the U.S., Wisconsin to be more accurate. Any advice would be appreciated.
edit: Running on AT&T...
Try the different radios. No one can tell you what works best where you are because we aren't there. Other than that, I can tell you that I get better reception when I don't hold the phone on the bottom. Just an FYI.

The best combo I have found so far is the LEM modem and Milestone 2 rom I get 1 bar more all of the time everywhere. The other modems for me even though they are newer it seems if you loose signal it takes 4-6 mins before it picks it back up LEM seems to get signal back in under a min. Knock on wood I think I have service everwhere now in my house. I have had the s3 for about a month and had issues with signal in my house where my iphone 4 has always has service.

Pisspoor radios on S3

Apparently, now "everyone knows" that the hardware radios on the S3 are crap.
This information was not readily available when I originally was comparing it to the other options out there when looking to move on from my Evo. I would have never bought what is essentially a wifi-only mini-tablet (when at home) if I had known how bad it was. And I know I could have returned it but I didn't realize how crappy the radios were until I needed to use my cell frequently from my home for both calls and internet.
Anyhoo... really disappointed with this phone. The Evo radio kicks this things a**. Never had the inability to call out of my home...
Maybe dump it on ebay... looks like they go there for more than I paid...

Call sprint and complain. I did and now have a free airave. Not the ideal solution but my coverage is fine everywhere but my house :-|
The S3 radios are really good for me. I also had the Epic Touch and Evo LTE and their radios suck especially the Epic Touch.
I have the best reception I have ever had with any android phone. Might be they are upgrading your area with new LTE network. I had 2 to 3 weeks of terrible service when they upgraded here.
I had an og epic, an og Evo, a Galaxy Nexus and by far the S3 is the best.

Guess someone didnt get the memo that they are doing a nationwide network upgrade and backhaul
I like to break stuff!
Cool post, please do sell your phone and give all glory to HTC. Goodbye! :crying:
It's usually ROM-based. I used CM10 on my S3 and whenever it got LTE it would just switch to 1x for some reason.
But then I flashed a TW ROM and I got constant LTE
Haha I've also had the best reception and reliability with the gs3

They have been doing network vision improvements in my area. My service has gotten a lot better from when I bought my phone.
I went from have 2-3 bars to full signal inside my house.

Apparently most people disagree with you. Either you got a bad phone or somethings going on in your area. Most of us (including me) are really happy with the phone, and there haven't been any mass uprising of angry SIII owners complaining about reception. In my case I live in a really low signal area for Sprint. I've gotten 0 to 2 bars on my last 2 phones, (HTC Touch Pro 2, Samsung Epic Slider). I get 0 to 2 bars on my SIII. Virtually no dropped calls even with 0 bars.
In the other hand, you clearly came here to dis on Samsung. Mission accomplished.

I have found the Qualcomm radios and GPS in the SG3 to be vastly superior to all my previous android phones. Started out with a Samsung Moment, then had a HTC EVO 4G, and finally a Samsung Epic Touch. This phones radios are the best - not your typical Sammy GPS and Radios.

Doing a side by side comparison, the S3 has a much more reliable radio than the LTEvo. Sitting next to each other, I had 4G all day, while she was lucky to get 4G for 10 minutes the entire day.

The fact that the OP has not returned to this thread and other posts he has made since November leads one to believe he is just Trolling. He doesn't seem to care what others have to say or respond to his post. He has a similar post about radio and signal from back in November and has yet to acknowledge the reply in that one.

My S3 gets way better reception than my Epic 4G did. I do not even need the Airave in my house any more. Not sure who your ":everybody" is but as suggested maybe your phone is bad. You should try reflashing the modem or something.
So does HOW the rom report the signal value affect performance? I'm just curious because I've used stock TW, unofficial AOKP, and CM10.1 roms and Open Signal reports good voice reception and poor data while I'm at work and I wouldnt be able to access anything involving the internet (pandora, basic web surfing, etc). This weekend I flashed the latest pacman rom and Open Signal is reporting OK/Good mobile data reception and I've been running pandora for the last 3 hours with no problems. I dont think sprint is doing any work in the area that would suddenly cause things to change like this and my signal status being reported by the phone is still hovering around the -100dBm mark as usual. Any thoughts?
I can also agree that the s3 has great reception, I got hit by the nemo blizzard and everyone that was at my house for the two days of no power my phone was the only one with service.
