S-off but not rooted? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I'm trying to root my sisters evo.
Bootloader says s-off, but when I try to flash a recovery it says something like remote not allowed.
Any ideas?

Have you tried renaming the custom recovery PC36IMG and putting on root of SD?

You need Amon or clockworkmod recovery in the form of a PC36IMG.zip file that you can place on the SDcard and run through the bootloader. You will also need a superuser.zip file to flash from your recovery to gain root permissions. Both can probably be found with a google search.

I know that, I've rooted my OG and 3D. I know all about the superuser and stuff. This is just that the hboot wouldnt let me fastboot a recovery.

You cannot use fastboot with Hboot 2.10 if that's what you're looking for.

I've done it with 2.10...

Fastbooting a Recovery will only work with Hboots 0.76 (ENGINEERING), 6.16 (Revolutionary upgrade from 2.16), and 2.18 (after unlocking).

Ahh.. that's right. I did it with 2.18

You could also download "Inc bits" from the market. App made by Doug that links to his website for easy hboot flashable downloads.

Amon Ra

Can I flash Among Ra when I root with Revolutionary instead CWM? Bootloader? Or do I need to use flash alternate recovery in ROM manager after root?
Sent from my Classic Tomatoefied PC36100 using xda premium
Grab a PC36IMG of Amon Ra from the thread in development. Be sure that it's named PC36IMG.zip exactly - don't add the zip if you don't see it. Put it on the root of your SD card, boot into hboot, accept the update. Decline to reboot if you want to go ahead and go into recovery.
Or you can download the properly named PC36IMG of Amon Ra here.

When it says flash CWM during the root process should I say no and flash this in bootloader right after?

Yeah, no reason to flash CWM if you're just going to flash Amon Ra when you're done.

Ok, I think I got it. Sorry kinda new to this. If I don't flash a recovery and boot my phone I will still be able to boot into bootloader to flash Amon, yes?

Yes, because you don't flash the recovery in the recovery menu, you do it from the bootloader, to get a recovery.
Thank you both very much, and thanks Plainjane for the link.

Well I don't know where exactly, but you should be able to. Using root explorer or es file manager, ect, should let you see it for sure. i can't say exactly where, as I'm unpartitioned.
Yea, not sure where either. I'll post it as a separate question. Thanks very much for the help.

Hey dvtmg, which root method did you use? Most likely, you have the stock android recovery which will not allow you to do a nandroid backup, or flash roms. You will need a custom recovery (CWM, Rogue, ACS) to begin either of those processes.
I autoroot method

If you run auto root I think it's option 3 to add cwm. Not sure though but check it out.

Nope, stock was nice and stable. I then used the froyo exploit (z8 or something?), installed rom manager and flashed the zip file from Unrevoked and was back to s-off.
