I just ordered an Epic 4G Touch from Credo Mobile which should arrive next week. They use the Sprint network and I believe the phone comes from Credo with all of the Sprint apps and bloat. I will want to root soon after I activate it and would like to know the best method to root it and recommended ROM. While i am not a total noob to rooting I would probably need an easy fairly foolproof method (I rooted a Verizon Samsung Fascinate and have installed a lot of different ROMs on it).
One thing people really hate here is when new threads are posted with questions that could easily be answered by doing a simple search. I am not one of those people, just giving you the heads up.
Check the stickies in the dev section, the autoroot is awesome and completely fool proof. I've used it 6 times now.

MetalHead,
thanks for posting the link to the stickies. However, there are many, many pages of stickies and I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say "autoroot". Can you please be more specific as to what root method you used? Are you referring to the (Zedomax) (ACS) thread? I have not read all 40 pages, but it seems that people are having some issues with this method.
Please help shed some light on which method you used.
thanks,
Neil
I got my phone last night and used the method in this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Seems to work great. Now I have to figure out which ROM I want to use or leave it the way it is.
mobile hotspot
I'm assuming that if you root you can get mobile hotspot to work even though Credo says they don't 'support it'. Correct?

The stickies are just the first group of threads in a section, they are permanently at the top of the list and are designated by a pin to show that they are "pinned" to the top of the page. The auto root is the first thread there. It is perfectly safe, and very easy. All it is is a simple program you run on your windows machine that roots your phone for you. As I stated before I have used it numerous times without any problems at all. Here is the direct link to that thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728

The unlocked mobile hotspot as of now requires a custom deodexed ROM to work but you can use Wireless Tether for Root Users for wifi tethering. The downside to that is you can only create an ad hoc network but the upside is it works with 4G whereas the mobile hotspot does not. Here's the link- http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

custom deodexed rom? What is deodexed?
So you're saying I have two options?
an ad hoc network? What does that mean?
How does this compare to the "portable wifi hotspot" on my LG G2x?
Thanks so much,

Any notable deodexed ROMS?
I was able to install the EK02 modem here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352310 and everything seems to work fine so right now I am downloading this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837 and give it a try. so are you saying that this combination of radio/rom will get wireless hotspot working?
Basically I just want to confirm that this can be done before I make the switch.

It works BUT I haven't tried it extensively and I read in one of the threads that at least one person got a popup from Sprint saying that service was not part of their package.

Gotcha. Basically sounds like it will happen. Please let me know how it works.
Hey Itzbob,
I'm about to do the exact same thing - ordered my Galaxy S II epic 4g touch from credo and will get in the next few days, adn thought i'd do some research to see if anyone's done this before - I got the links for the rooting (thanks _MetalHead_), and that seems easy enough. now that it's beedn about a week since you put the new ROM, do you like it? fast? battery life, etc? also, and this is a total Noob question - did you have to do anything with APN settings and the like to get it to work? I come from the iPhone jeailbreaking/unlocking world, and this will be my first root/ and flashing ROM. since I'm gettinga new phone, i'd love to just do this right away, instead of using it, and then wiping off stuff when i flash it.
any advice appreciated!
Sorry for the delayed reply I've been on vacation. As for questions... Battery life is just ok but I am a heavy user. Rooting only without the custom ROM gave me excellent battery life. So far I have also had 2 complete crashes with Calks ROM so make sure you have titanium backup. I wish I knew what caused the crashes, seems like a few apps don't play nice but I haven't been able to pinpoint which ones.
It is fast! Gps, 4G, everything seems to work great.

If anyone is still following this thread... I updated to Calks 2.5.1a Rom, EL13 AND the most important part flashed the Stock Android hosts file from Calkulin http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=772217&d=1320463525
and my phone works awesomely well. I was having freezes and random reboots and the stock hosts file fixed it.
I still havent tested the hotspot but will be next week when i am working in the field and I will report back.

First of all, thank you so much for your posts, they have been extremely helpful to me so far!
My main question for you is: are there no extra procedures or APN settings or anything at all for a Credo Mobile Galaxy S 2 vs a Sprint S 2?
And in regards to your Credo S 2 --If not, can I just run sfhub's One-Click ODIN with the stock EL13 Modem, Kernel, and ROM for the E4GT (rooted), then do option c3 with Auto Root to get CWM, to allow changing to Calkulin's E4GT v2.5.1a ROM and it's kernel, while keeping the stock EL13 Modem? Can you run the 2.6 ROM as well as the 2.5.1a ROM? Any reason not to run the newer one?
Also can you return you phone to returnable stock from it's current state?
Thanks for any help you can provide! What you guys are doing in this thread is like the only source for Credo S 2 info that I am aware of.
Does anyone have a mms fix for EVO on cricket...please point me in the right direction...don't mean to be a noob just need some assistance..thanks
Did you back up apn settings with apn backup app and then disk drive your phone and edit the backup apn.xml file and put your "[email protected]" then make sure you save it as is and disconnect drive from pc then open apn backup app and delete all apns and then click restore select the .xml you edited then save exit. Go grab the mms.zip and flash it through recovery menu. Better explained here.

I have never been able to get MMS working in AOSP on Cricket. I can do it in any Sense rom but the APN settings in AOSP never seem to stick or work correcty.
This is the one and only reason I'm still running a Sense rom. I want badly to run AOSP so I can link up a controller to my phone but I send and receive far too many pictures to give that capability up.

I hate sense. I'm all about the aosp. I emailed a supposed cricket flash master last month asking if he has a mms solution for aosp. He respond yes but when asked if he would mind sharing the replys stopped. After a month I emaild him again and got this "No, sorry. Nice! What did you do?
A while ago, I downloaded a nandroid someone posted from their T-Mobile Galaxy Note II to see if I could pick it apart for wi-fi calling, but I don't use it so I can't really test it and I lost interest. Now, I've packaged up the Wifi Calling app with all of the libs it came with and added in the build.prop from the zip. It might be a lot more than what is needed, but I don't want to have to keep uploading bits and pieces. If you think you have an idea of what you're doing and want to try it out, go for it. I don't really know much about wi-fi calling at all so unless you have some sort of logcat, I'll be of little to no use to you at all. I guess that's about it...
You can use the ics wi-fi calling package to help you out by possibly using it as a reference/using parts/etc.
FOUND HERE
And here is what I've extracted from that 1GB+ package.

Let us know what you find and good luck
If you feel you might need more files from the original nandroid just let me know.

Hm... by the looks of it, it would seem that these are only settings for Wi-Fi calling. So it would seem that you'd have to mod the settings apk to have the option for WiFi calling settings. :/ I'll look into elgins (CM10) source sometime to see if I can add it in. If I can at least get the app starting somewhere, it will be easier for everyone else to debug/fix it up. If anyone has messed with the note 2 and can confirm that WiFi calling is accessed via settings and not launcher (app) that would be helpful as well.

From what I have seen and read on my HTC One S it is built into the frame work on JB so way above what I know good luck.

I'm thinking the setting could be added in way that is similar to this:
https://github.com/SyNtheticNightma...mmit/bfac7c05daab9f6294f7419ea6173c4a1c569092
Though I don't know the exact name of the package for the wi-fi calling settings... I'd need to decompile it to find that out (unless you know another way, I'm not too familiar with apks). I could also try whipping up an icon for this if you need one.

Sorry for a late reply (haven't had the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 (SGH-T889) so long...
Wifi Calling settings are located under Settings / More settings /
And includes two items: Wi-Fi Calling (this is to enable/disable with a check box), and, Wi-Fi Calling Settings (This offers Connection Preferences [Wi-Fi Preferred / Wi-Fi Only / Cellular Preferred}, and, Help)
For reference, the above menu structure/selections are based on Stock F/W 4.1.1, Build Number JRO03C.T889UVALL4
Is this still a work in progress or has it died?
it sure died.. adding wifi calling to JB has been a task for over a year..no dev has been able ot make this work...so sad.

Reason I asked if anyone has it working cuz in the changes log of this ROM says native tethering unrestricted working. But its not well for me atleast
Yes, I'm obviously a troll
900 posts and all of them trolls.
If it isnt working for you and it worked for others, you should ask those "others" what settings they have on their rom. Maybe they have a different kernel or they wiped more times then you so their flash is cleaner.

I don't know what the problem is with USB Tethering, but you asked for Sprint Hotspot Tethering and CNexus gave you a very good answer on how to accomplish setting up a hotspot. You must use a 3rd party app because the Sprint Hotspot app is not unlocked. Maybe try asking in the ROM thread?

You sir, need to calm down. they are trying to help. The way you worded it is indeed confusing.
Anyway, if you read the OP, the darthstalker ROM was intended for the use of only the T-Mobile s3. He just now Ported it to sprint so things might not work. The OP is probably from the T mobile thread. T mobile and sprint are different. Why don't you post in his thread the problem and tell him. First you should calm down and be 100% sure it isn't an user error.

Exactly what I was saying. If you're having issues with the tether and others got it to work, then you should ask them, as in ask in the rom thread and not the general public, most of which probably do not use the same rom.

Listen buddy, you sounded like you wanted to know about both. Can't post in the development thread? Take initiative and go make constructive post somewhere. Then tell the dev. Since it is a port it might still be coded for t mobile. Since both are broken, use the WiFi tether to fix it or find another ROM that has it working. You could also Google mods or anything make it work. Don't get mad at us for trying to help.

Definately a HUGE find. I think we just take for granted that Devs would be on top of things and have something like this baked into their ROMs, not realizing how much time goes into devlopoing a ROM and that they have enough on their plate already.
This is why I love xda and the community. People helping people. Sharing is caring!
I'm on SlimBean 4.2.2 build 6. The package downloaded to my phone as a .man file, but it downloaded to my PC as a .apk file, so I used AirDroid to install it on my phone. I changed the device profile to Samsung Epic 4G touch, checked encryption, added an 8-character passphrase, and set an SSID. I started tethering with no errors; however 4g disconnected. I went back to settings and checked Wifi driver reload, and now I can tether with 4g service running (I did a speedtest on my laptop to confirm that I was tethering at 4g speeds).
Downloaded and changed file extension to .apk and installed. Thanks
