Hi I've been using my phones USB tethering as my source of internet for my PC and my new kitten chewed through the original Samsung wire that came with the phone. So I got my spares out (one HTC and the other some 3rd party) and neither of them when plugged into the computer let the phone know its a PC. Like it charges but the USB mode doesn't come up and USB tethering is inaccessible. I tried my friends E4GT wire and it worked fine. No other non Samsung wire I have does tho. Is there a limitation or do I just have 2 faulty wires? Like I said they both charge the phone, just no USB detection.

All my spare usb cables are blackberry cables, they work great and cost about $2 a pop on amazon. Any microusb cable should work though, maybe your old ones got damaged from excessive use.

I have a Tilt 2, had it since last March. I've had to have it replaced twice already due to the USB jack getting to the point where it no longer functions except to charge, it won't connect via cable to the pc, nor will it work with the multi-function adapter provided at purchase by HTC.
Is it dangerous/wrong to use after-market chargers/adapters/standard usb cables with the phone??? Am I damaging the usb port by using car chargers/wall chargers, etc that I got from ebay, or is this just a matter of bad design?
It isn't. It looks different, but its not. I believe its ONLY notched like that because not only is that port a USB port, but it also has a few extra 'wires' for connecting a headset to it. (via the HTC adapter)
Of course, the corporate answer is.. Yes using a non HTC Power Adapter could damage your TP2. But unofficially, I doubt it.
I've stopped buying over priced chargers for my phones and will by any Mini-USB charge that I can find. Most will work. The voltage does not matter anymore since USB is a set standard, and any modification to the voltage would not comply to the USB standard, and it wouldn't be USB then.
I've had the same issue with my TP2 (and with the HTC Wing I had before). Check the power adapters itself. I have a RAZR charger I've been using for years, and I think the plug itself has just about had it.
Also take some canned air to the USB port on the phone (while it is powered off and battery removed) and try to remove debris from the USB port. The minuscule little piece of dust could cause a bad connection. Electronic cleaner works better at this. (its LIKE canned air but contains alcohol-based cleaner in the "air". It's available at Radio Shack.) This fixed the problem I was having with my Wing.
And finally, it may just be time for a new phone. The ports just plain wear out from daily plugging and unplugging that adapter in. One slight bend and the port is all out of alignment.. (does it wiggle instead of being a firm connection when you plug in the charger?)
This is why I am waiting for the day these induction charges are standard in phones.. No more power adapters!
I just use a normal USB plug for mine. I don't even fool with the one it came with so I don't get that one confuse with something else. They only notched it like that to make a buck, I would guess.
If you are trying to use Mini USB headphone, only the ones made by HTC will work as it has 11 pins. Standard Mini USB has only 5 pins.
Hi guys
I bought a charger (Sony/Ericsson) for my car that has given some trouble. For some reason my Galaxy Nexus switches off when I try to charge it using my new car charger. The same happens if I use the same cable from my laptop.
A colleague can use the cable to charge but his phone (Galaxy S II) is no longer recognized by his PC (his own cable works fine). I can charge using his cable without any problems.
Another colleague started talking about different cable versions... but really... it doesn't make sense to me.
I have had the same problem with the original cable that came with the charger and with a new cable I bought as I assumed the original one was broken.
Does anyone here have any specific usb/micro usb knowledge and can tell me if there's anything special I should look for when getting a(nother) new car charger/cable?
Thanks in advance

I know one can short a USB port and cause a computer to reboot on the spot as if it lost power. It's done by inserting like a key so that the key connects the 5v + and ground contacts within a USB port. Maybe that's what's going on here- the way the cable is made, the micro USB part makes contact with all the pins, but also inadvertently connects the two for power?

I tried taking my normal PC cable to the car and it worked like a charm. So I guess I must have gotten hold of two (!) flawed cables... what's the odds?
Thanks
Found out what prevented my phone from being recognized by my PC. The problem was the cable. I was using a new cable that I suspect came with my wife's Samsung Galaxy S3 phone purchased at Costco. There are no markings to identify the cable other than the usual USB logo. This cable will do a slow charge but will not transfer information. so Beware.
My LGOG wont even charge if i use the micro usb cord for my nexus7. I thought all micro usb cables were the same.

Well monster cables (and apple for that matter) will tell you that (probably just a marketing ploy) not all cables are created equal...
I know this was very true with the Samsung Epic. It was proven many times. Ferrous cords seemed to be the best.

I bought a charge only micro usb cable. Won't transfer data on any phone but will fast charge on any connection. Will get 1Amp for the PC. charges from 5% to 100% in about 1 to 1:30
Hello everyone,
This is my 2nd note II. My first device had a few problems and now this one seems to have a loose charger port. Also, when I connect this device to my tv via microusb, the tv screen flickers (could be an indicator of a faulty micro usb port). Has anyone had the problem of their charger wire falling out of the microusb port? What did you do to fix it? If you sent it to samsung did they return the device in working condition without any dings or scratches?
Thanks im adv

Mine was perfect for the first few weeks, but eventually got a bit loose so I replaced the USB cable which did the trick. Ive heard of other cases where the usb ports became loose, but not to the point of it falling off on its own.
Have you tried other USB cables on your phone?

hey i did try the usb wire that came with my samsung media dock... its a bit more snug, but it came off randomly after a while. my samsung otg usb cable fits great... the thing that concerns me is that sometimes when i connect my device to my media dock (uses the microusb port) which connects my phone to my tv, the screen on the tv flickers. this could be an indication of a faulty microusb port... but heres the confusing thing, ive tried transferring files to and from my computer via microusb and it works fine, so that would be an indication of a working usb port.
from what you have heard or read, was the consensus a problem with the usb port or the wire?
thanks
Yes, the wire was the culprit based on my reading.
Better have your phone checked. Im sure it's well within Samsung's warranty period
Ironically the best cable i use is a blackberry one, excellent secure fit

I’m having a problem charging my AT&T Galaxy S3 rooted. No USB cables work to charge my phone. Whether it be the one it came with in the box or one from wall mart. I’ve also tried all the USB cables, HTC, Samsung, and others. Also tried the USB mini Best Buy sells for these phones.
Before I had this problem USB cables would work just fine but all the sudden they stopped working.
The only way I can get any USB cables to work is if I hold it at an angle and itll charge and stop randomly but charges very slow if held at an angle.
Only way I can get my phone to charge is if I use a wall charger. I have tried all the USB cables with my car, lap tops, and usb to wall adapters.
HELP PLEASE!

That's a hardware problem.. not much we can do about it. You most likely damaged your USB port and will need to replace it.
You can contact mobiletechvideos.com for their services if you don't know how to replace it yourself.
