Jelly bean messaging app SMS the MMS conversion - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just got myself a nexus off Google play 3 days ago and absolutely love it, save for jelly bean. (I love everything except for this) I noticed that at 160 characters the messaging application switches SMS to MMS automatically. This also cannot be changed like in ICS.
I tried to replace the messaging application with the stock application from ice cream sandwich and but no dice. I used root explorer to push the app into the app folder under the system entry, restarted into recovery and fixed permissions. I had the phone working without the messaging app appearing in the app drawer.
Is there a ROM that allows you to change the character limit of the SMS to MMS conversion? Or is there a way that gets the old messaging application back?
Thanks

Thank you. I did a number of searches and this is the first fix hat worked for me. Just for reference for everyone else.
Flash your ROM
Flash new gapps
Flash kernel
It replaces the jb messaging application with the ICS one

That's actually the JB messaging app but with the split options added in.

Messaging apk and custom roms

I know this might sound trivial but this is the only ROM I've seen with customized messaging app that includes pop up, my question is how come no one includes a way in the ROM or app to set individual contact notifications without downloading another app

First of all, I have no idea what rom your talking about. I'm assuming ANYTHING based on CM10 or AOKP code.
Second, stock android has never had custom notifications for individual contacts. And to do this someone would actually have to code it! Maybe they'll get around to it, maybe they won't. Maybe it never crossed their minds because they don't use such a thing, or maybe because there's apps for that! but for native support, it has to be something a dev actually wants to have.
Not trying to be a douche either, just informing :highfive:
Sorry codename android 3.6.0 but yeah I find it really handy to know who is texting you without picking up the phone

I am also running CNA 3.6.0 but I do not know where the option to set custom notification tone for individual contact. Can you help me please?
Honestly no where, to achieve this you need to go to messaging settings turn off notifications, go to play store download sms popup and enable it and then find contact notifications.

MIUI also includes sms popups in the stock app
Yes but those pop UPS don't support individual notifications as far as I know

[Q] Stock JellyBean MMS instead of TouchWiz?

Well, I have installed a default MMS.apk to my system/app directory and installed it. It works fine, but there are two issues. It doesn't have lockscreen notification, and it force closes when sending or receiving a picture.
Is there any steps to correcting these issues? I can live without the lockscreen notification, but I need to fix the picture bug.
Are you talking about the AOKP mms. Apk wih emojis support?

I think, but not sure. It has pop-up reply. I think it's just the stock mms app for jellybean. I'm currently running BlazerRom, 4.1.1.

Google Voice Integration App

I use google voice for texts a lot and stumbled upon an app that integrated google voice into the stock messaging application of the phone. This is not a standalone messaging application like "Google Voice + Messaging" app, but instead can set the stock app to use gvoice. For those who want to check it out here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...tZHJ0b29scy5hcHBzLmd2aW50ZWdyYXRpb24uZnJlZSJd
It works perfectly except one thing: For some reason I am not getting notification bar notification from the messaging application for new texts received. The texts themselves come in and can be viewed if you open the messaging application but it doesn't send the status bar notification. Can anyone try and confirm this or is it just me because I don't see it mentioned in reviews. As an alternative I just have the default gv app notify me and I use messaging app for actually sending.
The reason why you don't receive your notifications anymore is because of the Google Voice App update. Every time the GV app updates the integration app must be updated also. The developer just stopped. It sucks because it was an amazing application.
There's another one on the market that does the same thing also but it's a separate messaging app themed like the stock one.

Actually, the app works fine in Android 4.0 and 4.1. I have used this app a long time, and it quit displaying notifications with the 4.2 update. So I grabbed the mms.apk from 4.1 and it works fine again. Every time I update my ROM now, I replace mms.apk with the one from CM10 I keep in /sdcard and it works great.
Hey can you post that please

Guys I found this and can confirm that it works:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31106386&postcount=1
The only two things I miss are
1) The "read" button that the notification has with the new mms.apk (this one only has quick reply and call)
2) bubbles/quick emoticons since I previously used the mms.apk from here:

[REQUEST] AOSP Apps for Stock ROM?

Hey guys, what's going on. I peeked into the AT&T variant of the LGOG, and seen that they had a stock ROM with AOSP apps, like Messaging, browser, calculator, etc. While we do have most of those apps, the one app I really want to complete droidmk's stock/aosp hybrid experience would be the AOSP messaging app, especially since because I dislike the LG one so much. Would it be possible for us to get the messaging app? Or would things get too broken to implement into a stock ROM?

Well I found an AOSP MMS.apk floating around the AT&T forums, but picture mail is borked Other than that, it works perfectly. Would anyone have any idea on a fix?

The 4.1 apps as they'd probably be the most compatible. I've recently discovered that Nexogen actually has all of these AOSP apps, except for MMS. And that's because MMS in the messaging app doesn't work at all. In fact, I don't think MMS works in ANY messaging app replacement from the market.

New Hangouts apk

Thanks to user Luke Olsen for posting this https://plus.google.com/app/basic/stream/z13zsdhwxmeoj3ubg04cixyh5tesidmz3ek it has sms integration that is confirmed working

Well, ergonomics seem as ****ty as always. Can't understand how I choose between SMS and hangout channels. Typing a name brings out hundreds of "google+ suggestions" I have never heard of, instead of bringing out my local google contacts.
What the hell ?
Is anyone else having issues with video calling after installing the new apk?

anyone have this working ok in conjunction with the new kitkat launcher/google now? I am getting a lot of hangout FC's. I used the v2 package from this same forum.
Edit: Never mind. Uninstalled the new version and reinstalled and now it's playing nicely.
As far as sms is concerned hangouts works perfectly.

No MMS and random force closes... I have uninstalled and gone back to Hangouts V1....
Really wished it was fully working.. Was liking the SMS integration

Why hasn't Google implemented quick reply to Hangouts yet? That was something I'd hoped would have come with this latest version. The interactive and expandable notifications are cool to see a full message content, but it sucks having to constantly enter in the new Hangouts app vs. just hitting quick reply or read with the CM 10.2 stock messaging app. I guess I was just spoiled.
On the plus side, I was able to receive an MMS last night, but when sending one, I get an fc. Oh well. Most people who I want to send pictures too have Hangouts and I just share a picture with them instead of MMS for the time being till that is fixed, or the official update is released on the Play Store.
