(HOW TO/FIX) wifi range problems and authentication errors! - Galaxy S III Themes and Apps

Ok so I so I have suffered from authentication errors and ridiculously poor WiFi range since I rooted my phone. Or most probably since I flashed a custom Rom (omega) for the first time..
Now, after endless research and lots of trial and error (or as I say, terror) I have finally found a solution. Although this is NOT and ideal solution, it solved my problem. Not being able to use WiFi at work when I'm only around 7 meters from the server is an absolute no no for me! Especially twinned with the frustration of 30 attempts to authenticate and still having 70 odd % signal and yet no connectivity.
So here goes..
For me.. disabling power saving mode via *#0011# did NOT work.
Nor did flashing back to stock without root.
Flashing cm9 did NOT work.
Flashing stock did Not work. And full cwm wipe didn't work either. And all other combinations.
So by hard work, research into other threads, Lots of terror and pure luck. I fixed my problem.
Apologies if this does not work for you.. but if u Have simular problems to me. I'm sure it will work. So follow these steps
1. back up via android. Copy backup to pc if u try this and it doesn't work u cant go back to before. Also backup and apps or pics music etc to pc.
2. Download latest stock Rom with root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704185
Thanks to wanam!
3. full Wipe, wipe cache partition, wipe dalvik cache. Flash latest wanam stock Rom. And repeat the wiping in recovery again. Full, cache and dalvik. Fix permissions.
4. Now reboot. And test if u still have the problem. As I did still. If not... yay you!
5. Do a hard reset. Yes a factory reset. NOT a full wipe via recovery. A reset via settings/backup and wipe/factory personal data reset. WARNING by doing this you will lose all app settings. All android backups and all data on internal storage. I believe this will also leave your ext sd contents unusable so ALWAYS backup to pc!
6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 again. This made my WiFi range and connectivity problems
Disappear! Although I still had authentication errors
7.Then repeat step 5 and see your outcome. It's seems for me atleast, that a double wipe was necessary. I'm not sure about you guys.
I hope this works for you all!
Thank me if it did or If I've helped in anyway!
Happy to answer questions! Noob or not.

I'm fairly sure you can skip the second wiping here and go straight to factory reset, correct?

Yeah most probably. But I thought I'd just share with you exactly how I fixed this problem.
Let me know how you get/got on with it.

I put a stock Rom and rooted. Since then I got WiFi problems.then I flashed again the Stock Rom but I didn't root and it seems to work fine. Once after I've read your post I'm thinking about getting root again but maybe I'll wait to see if I have now OTA upgrades or I haven't (i wouldn't like to loss them .

Ok so I still have authentication errors. But only very few. And it's not affecting me. Seems strange that I am stock and I've reset. Must be faulty hardware. Surely. It's much better than before. Very usable. But still occasional errors. Someone must know more about this...

Hi,
I also got problems similar to yours, I believe.
I always flashed ROMs from sam mobile. Since the 1st one after the original, I was bound to use the #*0011# workaround.
I believe after I flashed CM11 recently wifi didnt behave ok anymore.
Then I wiped everything a lot of times (not as you suggested though), installed a lot of ROMs,
but wifi only connects within a certain range from the router.
There are a lot of glitches to that, as you may have noticed as well. For instance, the 1st time
you associate to a network, usually it connects straight away. After that, it's a nightmare.
But one thing that made me believe this is a rom/kernel/root issue, is this: you try and fail to
connect. Go to the service screen via #*0011#. The wifi module/process don't know the tech term,
is unable to show the bssid or even the ssid, although any play app can. That is very very odd.
Also, in this scenario sometimes when you can connect, #*0011# info is weird, like rssi -200,
speed -1Mbps, did you see those numbers too?
All in all, I don't think your solution is far fetched, it could really be needed multiple wipes and all.
I'm still trying another regions ROMs, like 4.3 Switzerland, and I plan to downgrade until something better happens.
Thing is, I already flashed the -original- ROM, which was ICS, but wifi was not ok. That is what
put me on defcon 1... lol...
Well, good luck for us...
cheers,
Xezi

Desire won't obtain IP address on any router

Hi all
New poster so go easy on me. I decided to take the plunge and go rooting a couple of weeks back and within that time i tried some of the well known roms out there.
I am running Leedroid rom but I have a major issue which is making me wish I did not root.
My phone recognises my router but will not obtain ip address and keeps disconnecting and trying to reconnect again and I don't know how to fix this. I have read all the threads about resseting therouter but it can't be my router because all my other devices are running fine from it. Also it has to be the phone, because the 4 or 5 listed networks which i can normally use just keep getting stuck on the same "obtaining ip address" loop.
Can someone please give me advice on what to do?
Cheers
Probably a bad flash or something. If you say that it can't connect to any available network, try to reflash or better yet try a different rom.
i have tried it on 3-4 different roms now, same problem each time, it started from using leedroid rom
Did you wipe for each Rom?
No- Try a wipe
Yes- Did you try before restoring data?
No- Try before restoring data
Yes- Did you restore using titanium?
No- Restore your earliest nandroid and test. Take titanium backup
Yes- Did you restore system apps /data?
No- restore your earliest nandroid and test. Take new titanium backup of wireless access points
Yes- you shouldn't. Wipe, restore only wireless access points and test.
Outcome?

Had this a myself, basically it appears to be a corruption in the phone internal drive not SD card. For me it is always when I use data++ hboot. To cure it I generally delete a couple of live wallpapers from the zipped rom, then install.
The WiFi seems to be the last thing installed when there is mi space or corruption. Delete wallpaper or useless program from zip, copy to phone and then flash, you will get a good connection after this.

tried bottom method. Do not quite understand your post rootSU. What do you mean by restoring data? I havent restored data, all i have done is wipe cache and factory reset, install zip (rom) from sd, and try it again. But with each new rom it still gives me the same error. I don't know what to do and its driving me crazy lol. I think I want to sell it
can it be the radio? Can someone give me a complete noobs guide on how to update the radio, please complete noobs guide
"all i have done is wipe cache and factory reset"
so did you make a FULL wipe or only cache ? you need to do a full wipe from recovery.
also i dont think it is radio, since it worked before.
but you can try changing it, just find thread on xda, download the .zip file and flash. IMPORTANT : DONT TOUCH PHONE WHEN ITS FLASHING RADIO, OR YOU WILL BRICK IT.
Yes full wipe, one says wipe cache and the other says wipe data/factory reset i think where it deletes all the data and formats everything

Hi Again all
Many thanks for the responses. I have tried it all but something weird happened while I was in Poland.
I was in Poland for two days and I managed to connect to the wireless networks there with no issues whatsoever but I came back to the UK today and I am still having the obtaining IP address issues on my home router, btfon and bt openzone. I don't know why it was working in Poland though, can someone please explain???
Thanks in advance
I would really appreciate if someone can aswer this....?
Try other ROMs, that's the easiest solution. Or you can try flashing different kernel. Returning back to stock ROM is also an option.

Unfixable boot loop... Help?

Hey everyone,
So this is my last ditch effort to attempt to save my device. I would really prefer not to perform another warranty exchange given that I am not under insurance, but I'm afraid I have no choice.
My phone was rooted and I was using Darkside without issues, as I had been for the past two weeks. I am always careful when I flash roms and I made sure to follow every possible protocol. That's the background information.
My battery life was running at approximately 6 percent yesterday and I sent a text message as normal, and it was stuck at sending. I tried turning wireless data off from the toggles in the pull-down and it was unresponsive. When I went to Wireless Network in the settings option, my phone rebooted. Once it started up again, my service would not come back, and the phone would continually bootloop once it got past the traditional "media scanner running", etc. My window of opportunity to do anything was really slim.
I charged my phone to see if it made a difference, but it didn't. Tried with my SIM card removed and it still bootlooped. I was able to get to CWM from the advanced power menu before it rebooted again and I fixed permissions and cleared cache and dalvik. Now the phone wouldn't even get past the boot animation before rebooting.
I put the phone into download mode and reverted back to stock using Odin. The phone now got past the boot animation in stock mode, but was unable to find service and after about 10 seconds fell into the same bootloop pattern. I tried removing the SD card but that didn't help either. Using Odin again, I reflashed recovery, followed by root and tried reinstalling a rom through CWM (I have only used regular CWM, not the touch version) with a superwipe to ensure a clean flash. Once again, it wouldn't make it past the boot animation before bootlooping. I reverted back to stock using Odin, and this is where I stand.
I have tried all traditional methods to salvage the phone and, for the life of me, I cannot understand what happened. The only thing I notice is that regardless of how long the phone stays on before rebooting, it is never able to find service. It's like the radio or modem broke and the phone has no other choice but to restart forever. But reflashing the stock UVKL1 should also reflash the proper modem and radio, right?
Has this ever happened to anyone? Any suggestions (aside from the typical reverting to stock) as to how I might be able to stop it? I searched but haven't been able to find a situation quite like this one. Thanks in advance for your help.
Really sorry to hear about your problem. Assuming the 2.3.6 stock image you flashed via Odin is the one provided by Przekret and that that didn't work, then I'd try one or both of these two longshots to try to clear possible corruption problems in either the kernel or modem spaces:
For each of the following wipe cache and Dalvik cache in CWM before flashing and again wipe Dalvik afterwards and also fix permissions:
1) Format system (do this 3x) under mounts & storage in CWM. Flash the standalone Darkside kernel X v1 final immediately after flashing, e.g., the current Darkside rom. (You'll need to wipe data, too, if not coming from a Darkside rom. Do not do any Superwipe - neither the standalone version nor using a flag.)
2) Flash the KID modem (do this 3x). Both Odin- and CWM-flashable versions are available. (You can always flash back to KL1 if the problem is fixed.)
Hope this is clear. It's late! These are both things that have helped get my phone out of troubles, though not as bad as yours. Good luck!

Also if u used the one from przekret then I'm almost positive that Odin package flashes the new radio too. If memory serves me right. Op let us know what happened
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, nothing has worked. I'm on the phone with T-Mobile, I see no other solution but to get it exchanged under warranty and it's not getting here until March 15th, according to the representative. I suppose I'll just use a replacement phone in the meantime. It's just really weird and frustrating... I could understand a bad flash or something similar, but I followed every step accurately as I always have and everything was working just fine until it randomly decided to die without warning.
Well since you're getting another one anyways I would continue trying to fix this one, just in case you come up with a solution and for another worst case scenario for your new phone.

[READ] How to get your GPS back! (No GPS showing/GPS giving general location)

Okay well I have search over 4 days on how to fix my gps with no luck and assuming that the newest leaks ruined it. All is okay because I have collobrated all main GPS pointers on how to get it back since there is not one major one here we go.
Before doing anything try a factory reset from settings and see if that helps you, or even use odin and go back to stock and factory reset from settings. Proceed if you still have problems.
Also note that some users report that clearing agps data can solve the problem.

1. see if gps is showing up or not, if not then repeat steps 1-12 above and it is recommended not to flash the same rom that makes gps disappear
2. if gps icon is showing up but very inaccurate then repeat steps 4-11

I flashed unrooted stock and did the hard reset, then found out that all my things on my internal sdcard (pictures, music, downloads, nand backups) were all gone.
Pretty misleading, especially since "no internal storage will be lost except the usual data" is stated.
Backup the things you want to keep before doing this.

It doesn't.you must have gone in stock recovery and factory reset. That's how you format the internal. Don't blame me buddy.
Samsung says it won't format internal.
Me doing that code 20+ times before I found this method to work also proves that it doesn't.
Last factor that could have played out in this is you. Blame yourself.

DUDE!!!! a thousand thank you's to you my friend. Got my Freaking GPS working thanks to this post.
For those that may have same problem here is my story:
flashed a 747 graystone AT&T and restored Titanium back up. thats when GPS started not showing up. flashed another rom and nothing. when back to stock unrooted and upgraded to 4.1.1 and nothing. Then I say this post. Went back to original stock rom, got stuck at samsung logo, went into stock recovery using hardware buttons and performed both cache and factory wipe. was able to get thru the logo but no GPS. went into dial and put the # combo provided in step #2 and voila! you really have to go into maps WITH 4G/LTE ON! in order to check whether GPS icon goes on.
now back to rooting lol

I found that going from stock over to CWM10 sometimes breaks GPS... What I did to resolve the issue was wipe cache/data > Odin to stock rooted > Flash CWM10 again.

Thanks bro. Nothing else worked except for the first 4 steps. I tried factory resetting on JB and ICS from the 3e recovery like another thread said to, but yours worked on rooted LG1.
Cheers man.
Stock JB rooted with Google Wallet fix. Steps 4 - 12 fixed my GPS issues. Thanks a ton.

[HELP] Phone reboots or shutdown itself

Hi all, as the title, i have a big problem with my wonder. from 2 weeks my phone shuts down or reboots with apparently no reason. after the reboot/shutdown the battery is discharged. i had the cyano 10, then i used odin to set the stock rom. this did not solve the iussue.
i don't think that is a software problem, because i set the stock rom and did not solved. (tried also obviusly factory reset) i tried also to put some paper between the bottom of the battery for don't moving it (i thouth that there might be a contact). no result.
Any help will be appreciated, and sorry for my bad english
Try reflashing the CM ROM then the stock ROM again... Hope it helps

already done but no result, thanks anyway
Let's see. Try getting your phone into CWM recovery. Given that you already have custom ROM of your choice stored in external storage.
Backup everything first. This is important. If better backup into external storage.
Then go to storage and mountings, wipe everything except external storage.
Then wipe cache, wipe dalvik and finally factory reset.
Do these accordingly, then flash custom ROM of your choice and with its Gapps(if required).
Then fix permissions.
Basically, just go Pristine. (a more detailed thread in the General Section)
If problem still persists. Go to SSC. Its hardware related.
i've tried all with no result, i will go to assistance for buying a new battery thank you all anyway for help
My friend had a similar problem on his S2, check if your battery looks/feels normal(like no bumps on its surface) the every time a battery I had goes like that it ends with exploding. My psp battery exploded, my friend's S2 battery exploded(luckily for him he had no cover on, otherwise it could've affected his phone) so check the battery and it's go buy a new one ASAP

[Q] HELP! my note 2 wont boot past samsung logo!

hey, new user here, don't know if this has come up before but i did a search and haven't found anything that has the same particulars as i do.
recently my phone hasn't been responding to power button or home button wake up, intermittently. freezes up sometimes and some apps force close more than usual. then the other day, my phone died on me (full battery discharge) and when i finally got around to charging it, it charged fully but it wouldn't turn on past the Samsung boot logo, and gets real hot while doing so.
Also, the samsung boot logo appears before the AT&T splash screen tone starts.
im running stock Rooted 4.1.2 with the latest perseus kernel version.
any suggestions? i havent made a nandroid in a couple weeks, so my preferred route would be without a data wipe.
i can still access CWM recovery, btw.
well damn wheres the help?
I would download the stock rom and flash it again. If that doesnt work, custom rom time. I honestly cant see this problem getting fixed without a data wipe though good luck and keep me posted.

With the non-response issues you describe, and the fact that you are seeing multiple force closes on the device....start with a wipe of the cache and dalvik cache in recovery.
It sounds as if the device is having cache file management issues, and trouble within the file structure.
While I dont think you have any hardware issues, it does sound like the software is suffering for one reason or another, and a base cleaning of the caches may help.
If no improvement is seen after cache cleaning, then we move to the data next.
I realize you want to keep your data intact, but if corruption has occured, you will have no choice but to factory restore the device and test again.
Try the cache cleaning first, then boot and test....
Beyond that...as the above poster states...a fresh install may be needed....g
Before a data wipe try reinstalling the kernel, and also try dirty flashing the Rom.
Not sure I would recommend a dirty flash to him. Plenty of times the result for users has been bad. Though as stated above yours, It does appear to be a file system error. He is probably right and I should have thought about wiping the dalvic cache first.

i was afraid this would happen....
tried wiping both caches with no new results.
ive read that dirty flash has had mixed results. if i can at least get the OS booted so that i could backup what i need to, that would be a good thing.
im thinking its a kernel issue, since the phone gets real hot while stuck on the samsung screen. could i be right?
thanks guys:good:
i also tried reinstalling the kernel through cwm recovery, nothing new
FIXED
did a data/factory reset from recovery. it kept everything! thank god for cloud backups. Google is the JOINT!! i even kept my kernel and root, and at&t backed up my texts and calls....thanks everybody for the help, i really appreciate it!
its still kinna hot though...turned it off to let it cool down and see what happens when i start it back up....will keep posted if anything
Great. Know I didnt help too much but glad you got it worked out.

Great news ....
Data corruption is so very easy to get.
As we mix and match pieces of code, those issues do arise.
Sadly, the causes are often elusive.
But the plan "B" wipe generally does the trick, as is the case here.
Happy flashing....g
