I was listening to music earlier today and it just stopped all of a sudden, so I open the music app and it instantly force closes. I went back into the app to find what I was listening to was no longer in my library. I checked the music was still on my SD card and sure enough it was, none of the files were corrupt, they just didn't show up anymore in my library. I tried taking it off the SD card and putting it back on, putting it on the external SD card (Where all my other music is), rebooting. Idk what else to try, anyone got any ideas???
While I'm still new to this phone and haven't experienced that on this phone...I have on my previous. Damn near pulled my hair out trying to find the issue. It ended up being and id3 tag conflict. Withing the files was info for id3 v1 and id3 v2 or revisions whatever u wanna call them. Anyways, I killed the v2 info, and all was well. Hope this helps...again this is what I did for my previous phone.

are you sure you don't have your phone tethered to your pc? because thats the only logical reason why it would do that...

Nope, hell my PC is probably too old to even function correctly with my phones.
Thanks for the help but I am hopefully trading the Ion for the One X today.

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has troubles with there mp3s not playing. For a couple of days my music player would play music then all of a sudden it would say file not supported or something along the lines of that. Where it would no longer play my music. At first thought it was the player so I downloaded another player and it said file didn't exist. The files are obviously there as I just played it a day ago.
After rebooting my phone it would play again. Then same thing would happen a couple of days later. So then I tried unmounting my sd card and remounting. That works as well for a day. The same thing it wouldn't read or play the mp3s. Is it my sd card (stock sd btw) or just a buggy phone? Thanks in advance? I'm rooted using syndicate rom, was happening b4 I rooted as well. Thought it would help it doesn't.
I have this same issue
I can still access the SD Card... add / remove files via ASTRO or Drop Box...
Just any attempts to play media fail (even ringtones / notification sounds)
At one point someone said to clean the SD Card contacts... I tried that, no improvements.
Nothing short of an unmount-remount fixes it. Whether mounting the card to a computer or just a reboot (quick or hard works)
No one's been able to figure it out so far :/
ACS 1.1.1
Been doing it since 1.0.2
Ah. See I thought it was my phone but damn glad its a known issue. I was thinking maybe a better sd card instead of a class 2. But may need to do some digging, what r ur thoughts about having just the music files on root of sd card. Instead of folders so that the phone doesn't have to dig so far?
Unfreeze or restore the drm content thingy. This solved it for me a couple months ago

Its an issue with mp3s. How would I unfreeze the drm?
Delete the drm app from system/app.
Well I will update you in a day with no rebooting or unmount/remount. If this works I will give you my first child...
I deleted the drm app a while ago when k0nane suggested it... It didn't change anything for me.
It has been working for me. Nothing has gone wrong since the deletion of the drm. Also I might add that I deleted twitter as well. I saw a huge number of posts that suggested doing it. So I did that too. And no hiccups. I got a different client for that.
I do have Twitter installed... I will axe that and see what happens.
I can confirm... After uninstalling Twitter I haven't had to reboot to fix a music file issue...
Thanks for that info kwilbur3... Hopefully anyone else who runs into this will find this post
So I love everything about this phone so far except for all the problems I'm having trying to play music off my sd card. I keep getting errors from every media player that so & so file cannot be played. I've tried reformatting my card & that seemed to help at first but now it's happening again. I've deleted every .nomedia file I can find. Songs that I literally JUST played will for some reason not play the second time I try to play them. I can finish a song & immediately try to play it again & get an error. They're just regular mp3s, too. It's maddening. I doubt it's my card, it worked perfectly in my HD2 and in my Sensation. I'm kind of new to Samsung phones so is there some special way I need to format it? I formatted it in the phone, it should work. Is anyone else having this problem?
I tried out player pro and all the songs from my 32gb I used in my sensation play fine. Did you try that app?

I have not, I'll try it.
I still wanna know why this is happening though.
Edit: Damn dude, good call on PlayerPro. Works awesomely & has folder browsing just like I like :>
So I just downloaded an album and I was trying to copy it onto my Galaxy Nexus using the Android File Transfer. I kept getting a bunch of errors, like usual, saying I have to reconnect my phone, the phone can't be found, and so on. So I attempt the copy, which failed several times. I reconnect my phone for a 3rd or 4th time, and my entire music folder is gone. Mind you, I did not delete it. So now all my music is gone, I can't simply recopy the music onto the phone because I'm out of the country for the next month and I don't have my computer, nor is Google Music working because it's not available outside the US.
possibly corrupted where that folder was because of the connect/disconnecting. probably going to have a make a new one and download music back to it when you get a chance.
If you have access to a computer then it's pretty straightforward to fool Google Music into thinking you are in the US and set it up.

I've been trying to use proxies since I got here. They either don't work or are wayyy too slow. The connection here isn't the best to begin with. I'm currently in Switzerland.
Anyone had this strange problem that the songs you made available for offline use (pinned) disappear after a while. In fact, the entire music app resets as if it was started for the first time and needs to be synced with your account.
I tried to find out the source of the problem, whether the problem occurs when the phone is connected to the computer via USB or something but no. I read other google forums and some people say its a bug and will be fixed. I also need to mention I am not using google music in the USA.
If anyone had the same before or knows a fix, pls let me know.
Using SGN stock 4.0.2, newest Google Music Play app
The music I select to download for offline will not download regardless of rom or version of play music.
It just keeps saying I have a problem with my internet connection, I don't. It is working perfectly for everything else on wireless and 3G but play music does not even reach 1%.
Infuriating as I'm going travelling in 2 days and need the music in my phone offline as I will have no 3G!
Some of my local music wont play at all.
Sometimes it wont download the entire song too, its quite annoying.

I think this happens because you don't have the song information (ID3 tags) set up properly in your songs. I've had the same problems before.
Anyone else experiencing this? The problem keeps coming back randomly. The problem also happened on my girlfriend's Nexus S so it's not related to my phone or my account.
I've had this happen too. It's annoying when I discover it when I am away from my WiFi.

I always have this problem, but mostly is went my pc can't recognise my phone/usb cable and it re-download the drivers while my phone's connected... I'm on stock.

Google play music stores music as cache. So cache cleaners will remove the offline songs.

I've had this issue since day one. Ive had it on two different nexi (think thats the plural) as well. Do you have multiple google accounts on your phone? Its as though something is setting the app back to its default settings because when it happens I have to go through the account selection screen.
Just a thought, are you using a shared account with your girlfriend to both access the same music (I am). Maybe through using lots of devices we are hitting the authorisation limit for the music account (you are only allowed to access from a certain amount of devices I think).
Keeps downloading offline music
For the last few days, my phone keeps trying to download offline music even though my phone has the music and I have not added any new music. It is crushing my battery. Any thoughts on how to fix would be appreciated.
I didn't had any problems with google music. maybe it's because of the codec? i use 256 kbps VBR mp3s from amazon and didn't had such problems since i started to use this service.
I'm currently having this issue, it's driving me nuts. On 4.1.1 with the latest G Music app.
my whole library just up n effin poofed >_< its all gone. i cant even redownload the music manager. google is pissing off lAtelywith theses bugz
This is not unique to Samsung, happened on my HTC One X as well.
There is some suggestion that cabling up to USB in "disk drive mode" triggers removal of all your pinned music.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35153
If you pin a significant part of your music for off-line use, this can be a huge download the next time you connect.
I've only noticed this once, when I cabled my HOX to the computer for no real reason, just to see what happened. (The phone is not rooted).
To those who see this frequently: Are you cabling up via USB?

Not when you pin the songs. It should not be cache-cleaned. Besides, I don't run a cache cleaner.
I, personally haven't had this issue in ages now. I never used to (and still don't) plug my devices into a computer. It may have been account related though in my case. I used to use a separate google account for my music (I shared the account with my girlfriend). I gave up on that approach and uploaded all my music to my own account and deleted the music one. Haven't had the problem since. Could be coincidence, could be something else.
I did find a workaround when I had the problem though. When you go into play music and it acts like it's not been setup, don't do anything, don't try to reset it up. Just reboot the phone. I did this a couple of times when I had the issue and when the phone came back up everything was back to normal, account still related and pinned music still pinned. Admittedly I can't remember the precise point to reboot it but I definitely saw it work.
I owned a Galaxy S on AT&T for two years, and now have the E4Gt on Sprint. Through both devices, I've used a 16GB external SD card for holding music. From android v2.1-4.0, I've had issues on EVERY music player I've tried (See: Stock, Google Music, Ubermusic, Winamp, Apollo, and more) with playlists randomly clearing out. I listen to music all day at work, and my second job is playing music at clubs as a DJ. This bug is really killing me. I'll plan out a setlist, and get home to see it emptied out.
From searching XDA, it seems to be a common issue. Playlists are stored in a database and not on a physical file and are somehow easily cleared out. I'm basicly looking for a solution here. Any search I've done comes up with no answers, or workarounds such as using back-up apps or cloud storage.
Does anybody know of a solution to playlists being deleted/emptied??
I think your SD card might be bad
My playlist have never been cleared out

How could it be bad? I've attempted storing music on the external. I've tried swapping it after a flash so that music is on the internal instead. The issue comes up after a reboot typically after any files are changed or moved on the phone. I'm guessing it may have to do with the media scan.

I FOUND A SOLUTION
i have the exact same problem with my samsung galaxy 3s, with the software 4.1.2. the playlists content disapears all the time.
what helped on my phone was to make a backup on your pc, from the phones and SD-cards memory, then format your phone (both phone card) PROBLEM FIXED. I know it takes some time to restore everything, i recommend that you install "backup and restore" and "playlist backup" on your phone and make a backup on your apps and playlist. good luck
PS. install only the apps that you need (it could be an app that did made the bug)
PPS. if you can use another music player than the default one, that could also prevent the bug, i am using "Now Playing"
