You would have to port a rom from another device and have to work out all the bugs that come with such an undertaking like getting cell radio to work, wifi, camera and many others. It's just simply not worth the time it would take. For an example take a look at the thread porting sense and touchwiz.

You would lose out on most the optimization from ICS and JB, there is no real point unless you plan on porting project butter and all the ui enhancements to GB in which case you might as well spend your time improving on what we already have instead of going backwards an reinventing the wheel

maybe not so much the reinvention but an upgrade to things never thought of on g.b.

If I'm thinking about this correctly, the biggest challenge would be trying to emulate the buttons (home, back, menu, search) that GB requires to operate. They are not needed in ICS, but you can't run GB on a device without them.

most of the cool stuff in ICS is already in some version of sense already. What I'm really interested in is seeing what HTC does with ICS.
I can imagine its gonna look sick. They did a good job putting it on honeycomb. That looked real nice, but on ICS, it could only look amazing. Then again, I LOVE HTC sense. It's gorgeous
Sent from my DINC2HD
This is dumped from the SDK, so don't ever expect anything truly usable to come out of it.
^ I was going to ask how this would be different from the source, but that makes sense if it's from the SDK. That's just used to make apps and such correct?
Well, couldn't you take the code used to write the apps and use that to figure out the code for ICS??
Just curious since I know nothing about this stuff.

ICS is supoose to be a stock android experience. Google has said that ICS is to end fragmentation across the various handsets. Differing UI such as touchwiz, blur and Sense do nothing but slow down updates to people's phones. I'd be shocked if Google allows its partners to slap a new UI on top of ICS.
FWIW, I successfully installed the two VZW apks over mine (I'm on CM7 #105) and have rebooted since. Everything seems to be working fine for me still. My phone network still recognizes my location just fine.

Nexus phones are designed to run stock Android, but I've read nothing specific about ICS itself being mandated to be stock and only stock. The only specifics Google has offered as to the fragmentation issue is an agreement with manufacturers/carriers to support new devices with updates for the first 18 months which, honestly, doesn't accomplish all that much. Given Android's update history, that'll generally only guarantee one OS version upgrade, two at the most if the phone is released at the right time to span two OS releases.
As for disallowing custom UI's, again, I've read nothing suggesting Google plans to restrict this. As it's one of the primary ways each manufacturer differentiates their product, I'd be shocked if Google can, or has any interest in, doing anything about it beside the aforementioned pledge of 18 months of support.

so it's going to be a long painful wait before being able to enjoy ICS fully, even if it becomes available for our T989

It would be cool if/when it becomes possible for our phones to multi-boot or at least a savvy developer creates a VMWare-esque app or any other way for any other way for us to use multiple ROMs simultaneously without the need to backup, wipe, flash, repeat for each different ROM we wanna try. For example, this would be useful for us to try out a ROM that's not daily driver-ready without wiping our daily driver. Just a thought...

I wasn't trying to be funny, I was making a point. Installing Gingerbread is going backwards, in aesthetics and functionality. I'm sure if you really want gingerbread so bad you can find a GB theme. That way you have the look and feel of GB with the improvements of ICS. Or install a different launcher or custom rom that is to your liking.

What did I just read here?
I get ur point and I get what's the point in doing it.no it doesn't make sense but I'd like to have it.just making a more sense based or gengerbread Based rom would be more ideal than actually downgrading.or like u said a theme or something would be a good alternative.
Wouldn't downgrading require you to add aftermarket menu/home/back/search keys to the Nexus?
It's hard enough trying to find a case that fits the extended battery.
[insert mandatory 'why not Cupcake?' joke here]
most likely it would be possible since the gn runs pure android. the only issue i could see, besides the soft keys, would be the drivers. no gingerbread drivers exist for the galaxy nexus. youd either have to write/compile the drivers from scratch or create a hybrid gingerbread/ics rom(which would defeat the whole purpose of running gingerbread since it wouldnt be gingerbread anymore).

I'm really thinking of going back to a Google phone. Less of the features I really want, but at least the new toys hit it first and fast.
Oh and yea Galaxy S is getting it!! But Sammy will never push it to our phones, and you all know I'm right.

Offline voice actions will be a huge help to the utility and speed of voice commands. Other than that, meh. Of course I'm excited though, and will flash anything
I'm definitely waiting for the next Nexus for my next phone purchase. It's hard to not get caught up in the GS3 hype, but its such a minor upgrade to our phones' specs......the GS3 will be many, many months before it sees 4.1.

I'm guessing because most people wouldn't be toting a tablet around to take pictures of other things besides themselves. With my original galaxy tab, I was surprised how well the back camera did for video but it was too easy to cover the mic with your hand when in landscape mode. Also, the official portfolio case for it covered the rear camera and led.

A little OT but all the laptops that google is using during the google IO are Macs.... LOL
So I didn't have an android phone during the froyo to gingerbread update, which from my understanding is more like this than 2.3 to 4.0. I know we have had lots of trouble with kernel source and all sorts of other issues. Was this due to the fact that it was such a big difference, and so maybe this time it would be easier for our great devs to get this going for us once code drops? Obviously we can't know for sure until then and I'm not trying to offend anyone or seem greedy, I am just curious if this is how android works, or if not.
Thanks.
That is because google banned windows a long time ago from their offices.
So, can anybody think of any good reasons why we couldn't get the new voice search and Google Now on our phones now? I personally don't understand why we would need a new operating system for that. But, I really know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes with programming and development, so I could be totally wrong. What are your thoughts?

Just me personally ....for us I'd leave 4.3 alone. The glitches in 4.2.2 are finally getting smoothed out now.....and to start developing 4.3 and the new issues that will arise seems kinda pointless.

I think people should just let this phone die and move on. Developers can't keep supporting an aging device forever, and the t989 has had an amazing run support wise. What more do people want? I can't see this phone running better than it already does.

Some developers, just like I am, are stuck with thus phone awhile. So I'll appreciate further development. Just don't think working on 4.3 will be of any benefit. Just keep tweaking 4.2.2. It still isn't glitch free. We have 4.1.2 also for touchwiz fans. I see no point in worrying about 4.3....it brings nothing really to the table....except probably more glitches.
So I can't move on....but I agree our range of roms are working well enough.....just keep optimizing 4.1.2 and 4.2.2. 4.3 and key lime won't improve anything....just add more headaches. The t989 will probably lag out on key lime I'd guess.

The Hercules still has a another 18mts to 2yr expected shelf life in terms of being supported by tmobile, there not going to drop it anytime soon so I'm sure we can expect development to continue, like others have said some ppl aren't fortunate enough to be able to opt into a newer device so as for me, in going to continue to build roms kernels and mods for this device, Sammy is expected to bring it to official 4.2.2 , don't expect it soon but this device won't die until 4.2.2 is released, just like the s3 and note will all so updates at 4.2.2

People had that same negative attitude about G1 and HD2 as well and look how far and long they have come from there releases. My G1 had android 1.5 when I bought it and 2.3.7 when I sold it. My HD2 had windows phone 6.5 when I bought it when I sold it it was quad booting with CM10, Pacman, AOKP, and PA. But by all means feel free to move on to a newer "better" device. I am very happy with my GS2 I am running Hellybean, and seems faster than my buddys toro.
Yeah 4.3 doesn't look very exciting to me..yes it brings a few new features but overall there isn't much to get excited about.
But I may be proved wrong.. Well just have to see how this phone performs

I on other hand would love to see all future upgrades on this phone, Phone is still sold my tmobile so I don't see a reason why development should stop.. Also phone is well capable of handling 4.3 easily so why not? If you're like me who uses phone for emails, browsing, movies and minor gaming, This is a perfect phone.. Only thing I don't like about phone is battery drain during sleep and poor batter performance overall. everything else is just fine.. So yea I can't wait for someone to port future upgrades on this phone.

No one will disagree with you. But, if we aren't getting official 4.2.2 or 4.3 and up....development will halt or slow down at some point. Its inevitable. Personally I'll stick with 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 for now. Unless 4.3 is developed with no more glitches than 4.2.2 presently has. 4.3 adds nothing to the s2 really, so I won't run a rom that has too many problems when its no different than a previous version that's stable pretty much. 4.3 helped the Nexus 7 with its lag issues for sure, but that's it. But I think our phone doesn't have those lag issues like the N7, so 4.3 adds nothing that we don't already have.
Now key lime pie may add/change a lot.. if our phones can run it smoothly. So that may be worth all the issues porting it will bring.

KLP is said to run on a device with as little as 512mb ram, so if that's the case the Hercules should run it easily, maybe not allll the bells and whistles, I mean its old hardware and that has to count for something but I don't see why not ...I'll keep developing this phone as long as I have it, an if I can get klp to boot, I will share lol
