[Q] Wildfire S gps location wrong :/ - HTC Wildfire S

Hi all i seem to be having a problem with the GPS in my phone, I have tried numerous roms and also edited my gps config to change the server to the nearest one to me (uk.pool) and also the port to 7276 like in modpunks config, but it always shows me 77 + miles from my original location, I have tried leaving GPS status (and GPS test running for hours but it hardly picks up any satellites (done this outside also) it just shows 1 green ring (not a dot like it did do one time) and doesn't lock on at all it just drains my battery. Is there anything at all I can do?
EDIT: I am running MIUI v4 (latest release from this forum)

Never mind, it seems to have literally fixed itself minutes after posting this after not working properly and putting me in yorkshire for days >.> sods law...

[Q] can't get GPS to work properly

I keep having problems with getting a gps fix on my DHD.
I turn on the GPS on the phone, also setting it to checked in the "Location" settings, and I wait forever. Yesterday I tried using the Compass app (By Catch.com), the GPS Status app, Tried using My Tracks and RunKeeper, and couldn't get a fix.
Every time I go back to the "Location" settings, and check and uncheck the "Use wireless networks" box, and also turn on or off the WIFI radio. But nothing seemed to work.
This morning I tried again, set My Tracks to record the road, and it did get a fix after about 5 minutes - So sometimes it does work.
I did manage to get fixes at various times, using all the apps above, but most times I need to fiddle with it quite a lot before it works, by checking and unchecking stuff. Sometimes it finally gets a fix with the "Use wireless networks" checked, and wifi turned on (even on locations where I have no wifi), and sometimes when its off.
Using the GPS Status app I see it usually finds 8-11 satellites, and they all seem green and with high bars, but I get no location at the end. Also with the Compass - I can see it connects to 10/10, but there is no long/lat.
What can cause all this mess? Is there some known bug with the gps? Or maybe some apps are interfering with others?
I also don't have any data plan (2g or 3g), so I only surf on wifi. Maybe this trows the location off somehow?
My location results are less accurate than 3g but still usable. Have you had better gps results from other devices? Your area might have some problems.
Cheers from my DHD.
When it works, it works just fine. Today on my way to work it succeeded in getting a fix after several minutes (which I still consider to be a bit too long - it should do it in less than a minute).
Last week, during a short jog outside of my house, it got a fix using RunKeeper.
Two days ago, while walking outside for well over an hour, and seeing in all the apps it finds multiple satellites, I could not get any fix at all. I want to use GPS only, no need for 3g or wifi. It should be enough (And had been enough on other occasions).
And it wasn't only defective two nights ago - many times I can't seem to get a fix. And only occasionally I get it to work properly.
I have the same problem ,i flashed a few different radios to try them and getting a gps lock was a nightmare.Originally i was on radio 26.03.02.26 and it was actually fine(shouldnt have messed with something that works.I have now flashed back to that radio and same problems.
i am sitting here with the misses hd and it instantly finds 6 sats and gets a gps lock while my hd finds one and does nothing.
i turn off gps on both phones ,turn back on and now her phone gets a lock at least 1 min faster.
Seems to be first time using gps after booting phone, once i have turned gps on give it a few mins then turn it off.I now run gps status on both phones, gps turns on and now get 2 more sats and a much lower error reading.
I have the same issues with gps, if I leave my phone flat on the dashboard of my car so that the screen is facing upwards, the gps seems to work without losing a fix, maybe because it connects to more satellites.
when I place the phone in my dash mount, it seems to drop signals and loses location.
I have tried a solution which I found while browsing the net extensively for the problem you mentioned and there does not seem to be much info on the issue. The solution I found on the net seemed to have made a huge difference although more testing is needed.
I have downloaded a program called "Tracker Booster - Tracker Booster is a small utility to help sports tracker applications (e.g. Endomondo) to get best possible GPS signal by keeping the GPS unit active in the background." It is available for free from the market, the way to use it is by starting this program up and then clicking "Start Booster" followed by "send to Background", then load GPS Status, hopefully once you see some satellites on GPS status and have a fix, you can now load your sat nav software or google maps, I use co-pilot.
Once you have finished with using the GPS, remember to stop Tracker Booster as it runs in the background and keeps your GPS on constantly which will no doubt drain the battery.
This so far has worked for me and as I have stated earlier, I need to do a few more trips before I can say that it works all the time.
I think this is the best solution until something better comes up.
This is not whats happening to me - When it's not working properly, I can't seem to get a fix at all, even after a long while. When I do get a fix, it works just fine even when the DHD is in my pocket, or facing sideways.
Has anyone one of you guys tried using gps status from android market?
Download it reset agps data than redownload agps data and that's it.
I get a fix in aprox 10s without it is few minutes

[Q] RCMix S 1.4, WiFi & Battery Drain Issues

Hi, Android folks !
I just bought HTC Desire (seems like branded/locked by our local operator), rooted with Unrevoked, formatted 32GB SD card 1GB Ext3 + FAT (on SuSE Linux), and installed RC Mix S V1.4 (RCMixS_v1.4_A2SD+_BravoHboot).
System is very fast and stable, however, I have two major issues which render this phone almost unusable.
1) WiFi is not able to connect to any router, even located few meters next to me. Looks like WiFi doesn't work at all. I installed Blade WiFi Fixer, it didn't helped. Another "Fixer" also did nothing.
2) Battery drain is enormously HUGE. Quite interesting - during idle time battery drain is on acceptable level. For example, during night battery level dropped 10%. However, calling wipes out battery almost instantly. Just several phone calls (may be 15 - 20 min total) dropped battery level from 97% to 30%!
3) Ad-hoc network are not visible at all. Is this trick will make them work?
/system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
WiFiAdhoc = 1
dot11DesiredSSID = HTCG1Default
dot11DesiredBSSType = 0
Before installing RCMix 1.4, I did factory reset, wiped out cache partition and Dalvik cache. I did not made GoldCard, however, and from the posts seen on this forum looks like it is not necessary.
PS. Before RCMix, I tried LeeDroiD 3.06. In spite of flashing zipalign first (before flashing LeeDroiD ROM), it bricked my phone - nothing happened beyond HTC screen.
Anyone can suggest me what to do next?
Well firstly, RCMix S is Sense and Sense is a battery drain. Secondly, change the wifi channel to auto on your router.
Firstly Sense is NOT a battery drain. I've lost 6% on idle in the last 8 hours on RCMix 1.5. That's on par with what I was getting with Oxygen.
Can you post what radio you have, as Gingerbread based ROM's seem to prefer the latest two, I believe they are optimised/tweaked to work better (most recent being 5.17.05.23)

Thanks for suggestion, Cactus42 !
I have Baseband 32.49.0032U_5.11.05.27
Kernel 2.6.35.10-g308ba26
Do you suggest to download the (32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17) one from?

It was set so from the beginning.
I have upgraded to baseband radio 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23 as Cactus42 suggested.
There definitely one big improvement - I'm was able to connect to our WiFi (it wasn't possible at all before upgrade).
Unfortunately, one big issue remaining - connection to WiFi isn't stable, it dropping for no apparent reason in spite of very good signal level (iPhone works with the same WiFi without any problems at much larger distance). In Android settings WiFi sleep is set to 15 min.
Another problem - HTC launcher always crashes at startup, and after some time re-launches and everything seem to be OK. I don' use animated (live) wallpepers, just stock black colored picture.
Is anything else I'm being missing ?
Thanks in advance for any suggestion(s).

If you're on RCMix 1.4 (I'm on 1.5 so slightly different set of problems) you can flash the RIL for the 5.17.05.23 radio:
http://www.multiupload.com/YXBZO2UH3R
Note - it contains the Adreno200 drivers we're using on RCMix 1.5 but as 1.4 already has them reflashing won't make a difference, also RIL's have been known to break the phone signal after screen lock, if that happens you'd need to reflash the ROM over the top again. The reason I've put this one up is because it's the only RIL I've ever had work and am using it now.
This was created by Baadnewz for InsertCoin, not me. I'im just re-uploading it as it's gone from his site.
This patch from LeeDroid forum - "Alternate WPA Supplicant - enable Ad-Hoc" (wpa_adhoc-signed.zip) - can it be flashed with RCMix S ?
RCMix S 1.5 Issues
I am sorry to use this thread but i also have some issues on the RCMix 1.5
- The first time i launch one app (ex: gallery, music, etc). This app close automatically, the second time works!
- The Locker rarely appear, i can just see my wallpaper and the drag bar. (After trying several times it works)
- If i try to create a mms, nothing appears to send, and when i try to send i get: ''messages stops.....force close..".
*Sorry my VERY BAD English, i am Portuguese and only comfortable reading, not writing.

huge difference between GPS behaviour in different ROMs

I compared quite a few ROMs with the only purpose in mind: see how the GPS works with them. What I found out is that there is a huge difference between them.
I started this, because I had issues with GPS fixing in Oxygen. So I measured the time and looked at the behaviour of Satellites in GPS Status & Toolbox. I always did a full WIPE as well as fastbooted the radio 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08, as I found out that it is the only way to remove the position and time data from the previous GPS fixes. I didn't know that the radio can learn things, but it is indeed the case, even a full wipe doesn't trigger the same coldboot process as the radio flashing does.
OK, I start with this, in Oxygen 2.1.3 after the coldboot it needed 17 minutes to have a fix! The biggest problem was the disappearing of the GPS signal (I mean all satellite bars) for a few seconds every 30 second or so. It meant that the all the satellites were staying "yellow" instead of switching to "green" in GPS Status. And even after the fix (17 mins), the accuracy was moving between 24 meters to 48 meters.
It was the same slow and "disappearing every 20-30 seconds for a moment" thing in Leedroid 3.0.6-R2. Not good accuracy either.
I tested Leedroid 2.4.1 Froyo for fun and to my surprise it was much faster. It had a stable signal and better accuracy (something like 16 m).
So far these were the bad ones (oh, one more, I tried RCMix but it froze down my system after waiting for a 15 minutes boot up...) The good experiences I had was with:
CM7 7.0.3 - This was quite quick and surprisingly stable. This was one of the two roms which could get under 10 meter accuracy. The accuracy is constantly under 10 meter, with the best beging 6 meter. Coldstart fix was about 2 minutes, Hotstart (just a reboot) was about 18 secs.
Redux 1.2 - I really don't know whats in this ROM, but it is by far far the most stable ROM for GPS use. It gets a Coldstart fix in 2 minutes, with all the Satellites being "green" instantly. I don't know how it does that, in most of the ROMs they need quite some time to go from yellow to green. Redux, on the other hand goes to green the moment it sees a satellite. The result is that coldstart fix is in 1.5-2 minutes, and hotstart fix (after a reboot) happens in 12 seconds! Whats more, it has the best GPS accuracy I have seen from desire, with the average accuracy being 6 meters, which sometime goes down to 3-4 meter! I didn't even know its possible with an Android phone to have accuracy like this!
But both CM7 and Redux are fast and reliable for GPS tracking. The biggest problem in the other ROMs is that there is something which triggers the loosing of all GPS satellites every 20-30 seconds or so. If you use GPS Status you see that all the satellites disappear for a moment at the same time!
What about Miui or the new Sense roms, like Insertcoin?
And if you try radio 5.11.05.27?
That one solved it for me, I was using a newer radio version and had the same problems in Oxygen...
Did you use the same radio for all tested roms or not? And what version?
I used 5.17.05.08 with all the ROM. I only tried different radios with Oxygen, and 5.11.05.27 was indeed better, but not that much. It got a fix in 8 minutes instead of 17, but the accuracy was still in the 48 meter range.

Why a FULL QUOTE?!?
And why do you ask for the radio version, when it is written in the first post already?
I have also noticed the same...
Since switching from the Froyo ROM that was on the phone when i got it, the GPS signal/inaccuracy has been an issue... but then again i am with telstra...
Maybe the problem is in used radio. Each rom contains RIL files which must correspond to used radio. There is a description here
I use Leedroid 2.4 and radio 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14. My coldstart fix is up to 15 secs with and max 2 mins without aGPS. The GPS has stable signal and accuracy 2-3 meters (sometimes 1 meter).

You might be right, but I did not try ROM-radio combinations of just ROM changes. But with Oxygen, where I started, I tried the radios 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2, 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17, 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.08, 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23. And while some worked better, they were still not as good as the better ROMs. I mean they still were "yellow" for at least 8 minutes, instead of CM7's or Redux's behaviour of being "green" instantly.
i just tested oxygen with the same radio you mentioned and it fixes fine for me in more or less 2 mins from coldstart. the accuracy is good too (5 meters) i just used gps test plus to check the satellites. also the gps has a stable signal too so i cannot conclude about your findings.
Guys gps problems are radio and region related
your answer to quick gps fix is:
~flash latest radio
~check your gps.conf file
~refresh your agps data frequently
more info here
{on summertime i will write a full guide, now i dont have time}

You might be right, but I tested these ROMs after a FULL wipe and without connecting to any wireless network. But maybe they had AGPS data already set inside (but isn't that useless after a couple of days?).
I found this application for editing gps.conf:

Same with me.
GPS takes about 5-7 minutes to acquire.
Funnily, downloading GPS assist data from the web didn't seem to always help.
Results with both recommended radio and with 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23.
FasterFix did not help - same 7 minutes to obtain a fix, considering a fresh agps download and the fact that I used GPS the day before.
Now with my old WM samsung i900, I obtain a fix after a cold start and without agps in just under four minutes.
In any case, depending on internet connection to get a gps fix sucks. When I'm on the road, particularly on a vacation, internet is more often not available.

Which ROM?
I get a fix reasonably quickly on Oxygen, but it drops the signal and finds it again every 2 seconds.

Why Is The GPS So Bad?

Ever since I've had this phone, I've not had any issues that would make me want to start a thread, except one -- the GPS. Here are the issues I've had, which are probably similar to other's experiences:
1) GPS just stops locking occasionally, and required reboot to fix. This happened at random times, but it always seemed like I had to have the phone on for a long time before it occured.
Solution: Sometimes I can use the "GPS status" program to reset the GPS state, and this would work sometimes. It doesn't always work though, and I need to reboot to get it back.
2) GPS stops turning on at all. This was traced down to my company requiring full encryption of the flash/SD card, which apparently this phone has a bug that prevents GPS from working at all when you do this. I had to remove my work email from the phone to get GPS back.
Solution: None yet, except turning encryption off.
3) The GPS icon in the notifier bar stays on in the "locked" status, even when GPS is turned off.
Solution: Reboot. Not ideal, obviously.
I've also tried replacing the gps.conf file as another user pointed out, but that doesn't appear to have fixed anything. Does anyone have a solution for these issues that I haven't already mentioned, particularly #1? It's getting very annoying when I need to use navigation and I have to reboot just to have a chance of it working.
Get your phone looked at/replaced. I literally have none of those issues.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
I know some people have issues with GPS but mine locks INSTANTLY and I have no issues with it.
Locks WAY faster then my HTC EVO 4G ever did!
I havent had one issue with the GPS. I use it in the mornings with runkeeper and it locks nearly instantly. I would say get the phone looked at
I've had similar issues with my GPS.. it takes a long time to get a lock and afterwards it's very temperamental. Unless my phone has an absolutely clear view of the sky in my car it will lose the lock instantly. It's extremely frustrating since I'm coming from a Samsung SGS Vibrant that had a horrible GPS. Samsung needs to start putting in better GPS modules in their phones. Many HTC owners have reported that their GPS works incredible and can lock on sats in their basement etc.
Just to add to my above post about my GPS locking instantly, it even locks instantly in my basement when I have like one bar of phone service.
I'd have to say the GPS is one of the better features on this phone.
I'll echo the view that you should have the phone looked at, I'm coming from a Thundebolt which frequently, literally never locked. My E4gT locks nearly instantly even when my signal is weak.
i leave my gps/ wireless networks off 90% of the time, so sometimes when i first put it on, it takes forever to lock on. i started just putting it on and rebooting and then it locks instantly
sidebar, i love how data isnt needed. i put it on to load the map correctly then turn it off to save battery
Just to clarify, if I reboot the GPS does seem to lock MUCH quicker.. I'm going to flash the stock ROM that was leaked recently and see if my issues go away, if not.. I'll probably see if Sprint can swap my phone out with another. LOS has been driving me insane.. I'm an on-call support engineer so missing a call due to LOS would be very bad for me.
My GPS sucks as well. When it locks (hardly ever) it is super inaccurate. I went to sprint and since I don't have the insurance I had to call Samsung. I'm going to send my phone to them (no loaner). They said once they receive it, I will have it back within 6 days. I'll let you know how it goes.
No problems with gps on both of the phones that I have had. The current one is exceptional actually. I use a GOLF gps program/app WEEKLY and the accuracy is actually remarkable. From my comparing it to a friends gps (also pretty accurate) as well as a LASER rangefinder (to center pin locations) it is usually within 2 or 3 yards from our calculations, which we think is pretty acceptable for our single digit games.
It helps alot on shots inside 150 yards, especially inside 100 when we think it is 50 yard shot and it is really 70, you have a big advantage there whether its 67 or 70 yards compared to your shot of 50 if you didnt have the gps.
It does take about 10 to 15 seconds once you stop moving to catch up and give an accurate yardage, this is likely the program/app as some of them I have tried find it quicker some slower...
JC
Disable "Use sensor aiding" if it's enabled. Locks much faster.

[Q] Anyone have GPS tweak for accuracy?

Is there anyone who use defy GPS daily? Can you share which rom or any GPS tweak to make defy more accurate and responsive for navigation?
I have been testing defy GPS, it seems like its rather not accurate to pinpoint location. Accuracy show 4-9m, but often real position is off by 30-200m. For navigation, it's response time rather slow plus the inaccuracy makes it not reliable. My old windows mobile P3600 gives precise position when put beside defy while navigating.
For info, I have disable wifi in location setting. I know I have successfully download supl data. With data enabled, I can lock under 10 sec.
This inaccuracy had been a problem for CM7. I have tested stock froyo and gingerbread, and problem still there.
So, can anyone help here? Do you have the same problem, if not please share your rom version or tweak..
I've used mine a lot for gps, i just make sure to download agps data with an app called GPS test as soon as i can, then if i'm not moving too much from where i stopped gps for the last time it takes very little to lock.
I'm on CM7 and it never disappointed me in Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France.
Any GPS fix i've tried did nothing good for me.
My defy lock fast. What bothers me is the accuracy.
Google maps shows accuracy 4-9m, but real position is off sometimes by 200m.
Sometimes it correct itself, other time, even if I waited for a few minutes, it didn't show my real position.
And I'm sure I disable Use Wireless Networks in location setting.
So how is your accuracy?
Relly good, thanks
Seriously, i've seen this mentioned quite often in the CM7 thread, but it never happened to me.
As said before, keeping agps data pretty updated to my position or close enough has always been enough for me.
Good luck in finding a solution that works for you!
GPS has been working perfectly for me under any Rom. Stock GB, CM7 and Stock Froyo.
In CM7 it locks pretty fast, always under 10 secs, after a few secs accuracy down to 3m. Works really good.
I only have GPS Status to download from time to time accurate AGPS data and that's all.
Thanks for the reply..
I have tried almost everything.
Tuning gpsconfig.xml and location.cfg, clear agps cache, restart before testing many value one by one. Tried many stock rom, take GPS files from milestone and milestone2 and the GPS still inconsistent.
Sometimes its accurate, but after turn off GPS for a few second, turn on again, its showing wrong position with accuracy shown as 4-9m, waited for some minutes, and still wrong. Sometimes its accurate for a few test, but after a few minutes, turn on GPS again, its showing wrong position again.
Tried also calibrate compass, even remove the compass driver, but still error.
There is a possibility of multipath error in GPS (bouncing signal from surrounding), but with easily lock to 5-6 satellites with 10-12 satellites in view, I suppose this can nullify error, as real for positioning, we only needed 4 satellites.
I hope there is someone out there know fix for this..

MIUI rom allows you to enter your preferred satellite under ph settings ^^
Then use gps status app to manage a-gps state - I get anywhere from 10 - 30m accuracy
You are not alone
GPS accuracy on my Defy has been a concern since I bought it. Just like yours, it locks to 4-6 satellites and claims that it's accurate to 4 meters, but my real position is usually a block away. Other symthoms are:
- Accuracy improves with speed and becomes very good when traveling by car, very poor when still or just walking. The correlation between accuracy and speed should be the other way around...
- If there are more than 6 satellites in view, it locks to a maximum of six and then starts "jumping" from one set of satellites to another each two seconds or so. It does so even if the telephone is completely still. I think It should stay with the same satellites while not moving.
As you, I also tried all and every GPS fix script under the sun to no good, even filled a bug report for CM7 back in the day with no luck. It seems that a lot of people out there have perfectly working GPS (o so it seems).
This issue is quite strange though. I have a green lens Defy, and my wife has a Red lens one. We bought them several months apart and they both have the same accuracy issue, so it doesn't seem to be related to a bad production batch. I wonder if its related to geographic position (maybe it works worse in some countries, somehow)
Hopefully its a software issue and can be fixed.
I dont have this issue. Ive actually been sort of surprised at the accuracy of the GPS with CM7... it locks on within seconds (vs the minutes with Froyo). Almost instantaneous with WIFI and GPS on. And it is always accurate. Sorry to hear about your GPS troubles. It could be a hardware problem also?
