Currently the phone I'm using is on CM9 alpha 6. I love everything about it except for the camera & camcorder. The shutter button lags when I press it and it seems to take a picture just a second or two after I press it. Same thing with camcorder (seems to freeze every time I use it).
Is there any suitable replacement that people are using? If there is one, does it have to be an AOSP specific .apk or will any .apk do (eg: like from Calkulin's roms)?
TIA!
ETA: Think I put this in the wrong part of the forum. I think this would better belong in E4GT Apps & Themes? If so, can a mod please move this?
For camera, there is app in the market called Fast Burst...has the same quick pic capability of the hero one x and sgs3. Camcorder, can't help. But I don't think you can just swap apks out from aosp roms with tw based ones without modding it.

I beleive you are correct due to AOSP being very different from TW.

Appreciate the replies. For some reason, it never hit me that I should use another camera (I've always used the stock ones fine) until I encountered the problems w/CM9's camera. I also found something in Play called Camera ICS+. Seems like that's the closest I would get to a working stock camera. I remember reading that one would have to tweak apks if coming from odexed to deodexed and vice versa but wasn't sure if it applied to something like the camera.

It seems like most custom ROMs don't offer the instant camera shutter, which I think is one of the best features on our phones.
Since the camera bits are proprietary Google bits and are not part of AOSP, I'm guessing only ROMs that are mods of OTA's will have this included.
Does anyone know of any of the 4.0.3 ROMs that include the proprietary camera bits like instant shutter?
EDIT: I TAKE IT BACK!!!
It works after all. I think camera was just slow momentarily because of low light environment. I'm happy now
I don't know what roms you've been running but I've had the same camera functions as stock!

Your sig says you are using AOKP. There is no instant shutter in AOKP. Are you sure? Because I just tested AOKP amongst others.
Maybe people forget how instant shutter works on stock ROM?
No issue with slim 2.5

AOKP's shutter speed is the exact same as stocks
You're probably talking about the camera auto focusing before taking the picture. If it stays focused you can take a boatload of pictures no problem.

I've ran Gummy and Milestone 3...no problems with camera
AOKP M3 works fine.
Re-focusing obviously slows things down a little but that is to be expected.
It is still lightening quick!
I run Manhattan (Mainly for the ability to change the navigation buttons... I wanted yellow to suit my case) ==
The camera you mentioned is slower than stock. Having said that its still faster than many phones out there. Once it focuses, you can use it like stock, but this one has the tendency to auto focus a lot
I didn't yet moved to any custom rom because of that, but it seems that most of the users don't care about it.
Is it that hard to port this from the 4.0.2 to 4.0.3 ?
MIUI ipone theme, the camera works the same way as stock.
Hey guys I was wondering if its possible to port the camera from stock ROM to aosp. I'm a huge camera user and camera quality for me is important. I did notice that the aosp camera really sucks compared to stock ROM. So is it possible?
Impossible.
yes it is possible but no one is going to do it because it requires other files in conjunction with the camera apk. and even more work to get it running on aosp roms
I was also looking for a way to do this but already knew it was unlikely.

I would agree with OP that the stock camera on TW is the best.
It's fast and seems to be more clear.
However, I don't think that devs are willing to put out extra time on porting something so difficult.
was wondering if it was just my setup, or this was a common thing

It might be both. CM's camera app doesn't really fit well for most phones. They clarity is significantly less. but if you did something different in your setup it might adversely effect the camera. If you do not like this camera app, I suggest MIUI camera which is an .apk that you can flash. You can also use one of the apps on the Playstore. Apps like Camera360, Vignette, LG camera work well.
Thanks for the suggestions will try
Also, what cm version are you on? There have been some reports with camera clarity in 10.1.

I found on both cm10 and 10.1 currently back on stock for the holidays and I couldnt find an apk from miui that worked downloaded the newest miui for d2att bur could find the apk inside
Been using TouchWiz since I got my phone (FreeGS3), now switched to LiquidSmooth (4.2.1), and it's awesome...
BUT, the photo quality on TW was MUCH better. So much that I think I'll switch back.
UNLESS anyone knows ... is there a camera app for AOSP that can match the quality of the TW camera?
Has anyone else noticed the inferior photos? Blurrier, less colorful, no HDR ...
And most idiotic of all, the whole "viewfinder" rotates from landscape to portrait ... which makes NO sense.
On a side note ... I wish someone would create a camera app like the HTC Evo 4G LTE where there are TWO buttons on the screen, one for photos, and one for video ... so that you don't have to switch apps!
Samsung's tw camera is the best...I have downloaded camera zoom fx and still the two camera is better by far...I wish there was an apk for the the tw camera on my aosp...all other cameras are slow

Porting the TW camera to AOSP is possible. The TW dependencies just have to be removed. I remember an old friend of mine posted a how to in the OG Epic forums... Might take a look and see if it's something I can poke into

I believe photosphere only works on 4.1.x AOSP based ROMs and not 4.2.x AOSP ROMs...

I have it working on my phone running LiquidSmooth. I have the zip that I used but cannot find the xda thread that I got it from. I'm a little hesitant on posting it, because it's not my work, but I also want to help.
Here is a link to the file: 4CamNex2.zip
This is the stock camera for the Nexus. All you have to do is flash it in your Recovery (I used TWRP). It has a working photosphere, but is very limited in the settings you can change. For instance, I cannot choose the storage location or HDR or any of the fancy stuff that comes with the LiquidSmooth Rom. You can see my screenshots I just took to see what it looks like.
What I have done to mitigate these limitations is that I kept the LiquidSmooth camera. When I want to use Photosphere (which isn't too often), I use the Nexus Camera, and all other pictures are taken with the Stock LiquidSmooth camera. When I do things like set wallpaper, I have to choose my gallery (two cameras = two galleries), but it's not too much of an issue for me.
Hope this helps, and if anyone can find the original thread with this camera, let me know and I'll link it (and remove my dropbox link). I want to give props to whoever created it.
So are the pics quality better with this camera mod compared to whats in liquid smooth ??
Running ParanoidKangDroid v.2.30 ROM. I'd like to have the hand gestures that come with TouchWiz. Is there a possible way to have this on my ROM?

you should try to keep all your questions in 1 post. you'll actually get better help that way.
you are on an AOSP rom. you want TW features which are woven into the stock firmware's framework. its essentially a choice: a few TW features vs custom AOSP optimizations. both can share some similar customizations, but not everything is interchangeable.
Any of the feature on TW WILL NOT WORK ON ANYTHING BESIDES TW.....
None!
They're dependant on touchwiz and won't work on anything else.

As long as source code for TW stays unreleased its impossible to port. That's why no devs bother to try and port. Its going in blindfolded. Same with Sense and other UI overlays. So when Samsung releases source code it'll be possible.

What features exactly? There's apps like Wave Control that do similar things...
Ya, there are a lot of apps that allow TouchWiz like features. There is a MMS apk for AOSP roms that has the while in messaging put phone to ear for Direct Dial. Just search in the playstore TouchWiz or galaxy s III things like that.

Well for that particular feature, I recently discovered that Liquidsmooth (and quite possibly CM, as well as JellyBam and others) have this feature in the settings for the stock messaging application. It's the last setting, labelled as "Direct Dial", but it's pretty inconsistent with the auto-dialing. I've noticed that when I'm laying down and attempt to call it won't work because if I put the phone to my ear the screen just flips to landscape view, and stays on. When I'm up right it tends to work, however I haven't had many opportunities to test this out yet.
That would be sweet if someone got two working with aosp, they need to release the code...
