I dictate a fair amount of my text messages and, quite often, my standard English is replaced by slang. For example, when I say "want to" it is replaced by "wanna." Anyone know how to disable this "feature?"

speak more clearly? as in, enunciate the gap between "want" and "to"
Itl be a few years before these new voice apps clearly repeat normal everyday slang /mumble mumble just as we state it.. All u can do is speak slow and clear and pronunciate words clearly

Hi, I wondered if anyone has come across an app which will speak alerts to me?
Perhaps something like "Text message from Jemima Puddleduck" and "Email from John Doe".
And preferably in a human sounding voice, not that abomination that is the standard Android text-to-speech!
Any ideas?
check out "Vlingo" or "edwin"
Just tried both, but neither does what I want :-(

you won't find any. An app would be alot more than the usuall 0.5 to 2mb. My reason for saying that you won't find any is because the app would have to know every name (and surname!) in the world, also any nickname etc! You'd proboly find that would tell who it is just by spelling the name out letter by letter, and even that wouldn't be very smooth (tone between letters and speed).
hope this helps! good luck!

I don't know if you're right. I don't think it would take that much space. Sure it wouldn't fit in 2megs, but I reckon fifty megs would be sufficient for all known English names. That's just a figure pulled out of my arse btw!
How about a custom message tone for a person that is a recording you have made. You would have to record a message for each person you want this for, Not the most user friendly way but will do what you want.

woow, no need for that kind of sh!t anyways.. what if you have someone saved in as a nickname (Ginger, Gypsy, my 2 favorite contacts ;D) then it would not tell you who was calling you cos the app would not know how to pernounce it..
hope this helps! good luck!

One of the best apps out there is called Tasker. It can do everything! One of it's tricks is you can set it up to read your text messages out.
Is quite tricky to get used to at first, but once you 'click' with it, its fantastic.
It costs £4 (which is a bargain IMO) but there is also a free 1 week trial.

Agree with Tasker, I am using it
BUT .... BUT ...
It does NOT have this say NAME feature.
Tasker can only say the phone number.
The developer plan to add this feature in the next release ... Which we don't know when ... or NEVER

Swype Beta was just updated to 1.4. Update details per Android Central, "added Living Language, which takes auto correction and word prediction to a new level with crowd sourced data". Other additions include, "The correction engine has gotten an upgrade, and the new Smart Editor now analyzes your entire sentence, flagging any errors for correction or suggesting the best substitution based on the context of what you're saying, not just the word order."
Please share your thoughts on this version. Download is here: http://beta.swype.com/
That video was hilarious

Thanks Dave, I've always been a huge Swype fan, wouldn't buy a phone unless it was capable of using Swype. This version is pretty nice. Still playing with it. One thing I noticed is, it's not quite as easy to use punctuation as before (like anyone uses punctuation in texts anyway). I used to be able to tap on the last word I wrote and it would give me the option of ! , ? or whatever, now you have to long press the appropriate letter. Not a biggie just something I noticed. Still playing, but thanks for the heads up! :good:
I'm liking the built in themes!
Thanks for the info. Just updated. Hopefully the update will address the problem with personal dictionary disappearing followed by no longer able to add new words.

I've been messing with it for about an hour or so. The smart editor and next word prediction must take time to populate. As for the personal dictionary disappearing, I don't get why they have a register option, but no log in and sync dictionary option  As for adding words, I have had no issues there. One last thing I noticed is that Dragon seems a little more accurate. May be my imagination

One thing I really wish they had was an option to disable Dragon and use Google for voice typing.

There is login and the supposedly sync dictionary option. Under Swype connect, just tap into your registered email/account. Although I'm not sure how it works; I don't see any syncing between my two devices using the same account.
If this is your first time using Swype, then the dictionary disappearing issue I was referring to usually happens in a few days. Whatever triggered it I'm still unclear; I've tried with or without an account, checked and unchecked syncing option, and many other combinations... and it's usually after that disappearance the word addition ceases to work.

I've never had any issues with the voice typing. It works pretty good for me, even when I talk faster or stutter, it picks up remarkable well. Maybe it's just your Canadian accent

Lol! I just find Google voice typing works so well. Also I regularly hit the Dragon button by error due to its proximity to the enter button.
On another note, after a day of use, I have definitely noticed an improvement in word selection while swyping.

I am always open minded to better options & different ideas, but if you are going to post a statement like this, please explain how you have arrived at this conclusion.
I don't think anyone can debate the fact that Swiftkey has the best prediction machine out there for regular typing. I actually use Swiftkey on my tablet, and when drafting long emails on my phone in landscape. Given this I was very excited to try Swiftkey Flow, which I did, for both versions. In my experience, Swiftkey still has a long way to go to catch Swype when it comes to swype typing. Swiftkey Flow is not as accurate or smooth as Swype when swyping. My typing speeds on Swype are 25% faster than when using Swiftkey Flow. This is not surprising given Swype has been doing this since it was founded almost 10 years ago in 2003.

OK..I like the fact it auto spaces after punctuation. I can tell it to learn how I type from SMS, FB, or Twit. It goes out and does it's thing and says it learned. I can now to "Swiping" words in shorthand that I used in GOsms. Genius. I can swipe left quick quick quick and it will start to remove text I may want to remove. The keyboard has a fresh look with various themes. All Swype boards look the same to me. I bid you to try the latest version of flow. ...61. It's much improved

If you like to swype, you can do a period-to-space swype (same for question, exclamation mark, comma, colon, and double-quote). You can also double-tap space to get period-space now. I'm not sure when that was added though.
I love the punct gestures; long press is too slow.
When you stop on a letter and wait for the menu to pop up with the available choices, it would be nice to see the uppercase version of the letter there as well.
Otherwise I have been using Swype since this summer when I got my SG3 and love it.

Swype also auto spaces after punctuation. I have tried both versions of Swiftkey flow. There is no brand loyalty here, I just want the best solution for me.
At the end of the day, this decision is personal and very much driven by what one is accustomed to. Let's bury the comparison discussion for now, the purpose of this thread is for discussion around the new Swype release.
Or just swype from the question mark or exclamation point to the space bar and it will input whatever special character your swyped from..... It's the easiest way.

Ok so this is just an annoying pet peeve...but as one example, I often mistype the word "just" as "juat," and I've never clicked to save the word or have in my personal dictionary, but now the keyboard autocorrect stops changing "juat" to "just." Other words included are "thks" for "this," "garvage" to "garbage" and "lll" to "lol." To clarify, thks problem comes with the LG Optimus keyboard, it's not like the standard/stock ice cream sandwich one. Not sure exactly how to describe it...I included a picture.
Just wondering if anyone else had this issue as well...not a dire hazard but it's extremely annoying. If anyone has experienced this, what did you do? Again, these words aren't in the phones dictionary, they actually come up as spelling errors and are underlined in red while composing text.
Thanks!!

If you check Settings<Language and Input<SpellCheck, you could disable that. I believe an option to see the contents of your personal dictionary are there too. Just in case you accidentally added those words.
I myself am a sloppy typer, often missing letter in a word, so I've found that the stock 4.2.2 keyboard that Google offers in the play store, has a better correction engine. And it offers swype, which is convenient with our huge phones! I'd also look into Swiftkey as well, as that is also an amazing keyboard I've used with previous phones, although it adheres to a more rigid correction system. Just my two cents!

Unfortunately, I did not see the option for "SpellCheck" unless it is somewhere else. The issue I'm having is not with the personal dictionary, as I have checked in there and there is no entry for such words as "juat" and "thks." The issue is with the actual keyboard and how it corrects, because right now it is failing to correct some of these errors I make. The system does not recognize them as correctly spelled words, but the keyboard still lets them get through. Not sure if there's another remedy for this
Hey All:
There's some threads about contact recognition, but my issue isn't with Google misspelling a contact.
My one month old daughter's name is Raegan, as distinct from the former president's spelling of the name. Any idea how to make Google interpret texts to my wife, e.g. "How's Raegan doing?" to refer to my daughter and not to Mr. Reagan?
Even if it meant manually correcting the spelling on the watch a few times, I don't mind, but I can't figure out how to correct it on my watch.
Thanks!

I know it's not what you're looking for, but I have been able to successfully (most of the time) spell out words Android won't recognize. You could try it, Ok Google - Send text to [contact] - "how's R-A-E-G-A-N doing, question mark."
In fact I just tried it and it worked. Unfortunately since you're spelling it out for Wear, it won't automatically capitalize the name, and I had no success in dictating "capitol R."
