Is anyone on AT&T getting this, too? I live, work, and play in areas where I get solid LTE (Chicago). But just today, I was dropping calls every minute or so! I looked and noticed that the symbol says 4G (no LTE). And later on, drop call again. Now it says 4G LTE. And again, drop call, now it says 4G (no LTE).
Does the HSPA+/LTE hand off drop calls? I thought GSM and LTE were suppose to be good about this.

I know this is an old thread but I found this in a search and the answer is, calls aren't made on the LTE network yet. So all calls were on the 4G network, just data goes over the LTE network. There was no handoff, just dropped calls in your case. If you're on the LTE network, and you make a phone call, you can see the phone switch to 4G as by design.

It seems whenever I don't have a 4g data connection, I'm not getting any data connection. Anyone else have this problem? When I'm in builldings I never get a data connection. Even when I'm outside I rarely get data connection unless it's a 4g spot. I know someone with a GN and side by side, he gets a connection at work while I have gray bars. Is this prevelant among most of you all? I'm on Verizon if that makes a difference.
Yes, I have this issue as well when I am at work but only when I have wifi turned on. With wifi on I get no 4g connection inside the building and the phone won't drop down to 3g, just gives me gray bars and no data. Manually switching from LTE/CDMA to CDMA restores my 3g data connection. Turning wifi off enables the LTE data connection. I assume it's trying to use the building's wifi network that I am not authenticated to for some reason. It's quite annoying and seems to be draining my battery.
My 4g reception sucks. I am rather disappointed. I canceled my ATT account and paid the ETF to switch to verizon for the GN. I am in plano tx which is in the Verizon LTE area and i dont get any signal except in a few spots on the highway. I work in Richardson, which is also in the LTE area, and i dont even have 3g in the building. I dont have any signal when i go deeper into the building away from the windows. I am running stock 4.0.2. I hope this gets better. I am already regretting dropping ATT.

Strange. I have excellent 3G and 4G signal in buildings, coming from Sprint I had non-existent data everywhere, especially indoors.
Just as an fyi. I went to Verizon to try to get a new phone. They told me my sim card was bad. I got the phone on the first day and they said they had issues with the first sim cards with the nexus. My wifes has the same problem.
New sim card, NO MORE connection issues. Yeah! Anyone else who has this issue might try this. I am now getting 3g and even 4g connections inside now.
ill go to the verizon store after work and switch sims. Just got it on 1/1. Ill go to a different verizon store to make sure its not a bad batch lol.
Wasnt the SIM card. Still getting crappy signal strength. I am going today and replacing the phone. If that doesnt work, i am going back to ATT skyrocket...

In my office I get very weak to no 4G signal, so that the phone is constantly switching from weak 4G down to 3G and causing connection disruptions. I usually just disable LTE and use CDMA only mode to fix this. I have heard that a LTE signal should penetrate inside of buildings better, but apparently my workplace is almost impenetrable. We have a Verizon 3G repeater in the office or I would get no usable signal at all.
Spencer, what kind of speeds are you getting with LTE in the Columbia area? It seems like I got better speeds when I had my Rezound than I'm getting with my Galaxy Nexus.

I've had the exact opposite experience in Dallas. I switched from AT&T a year ago. I couldn't even make calls in my house. (I live in Lakewood) I had to go upstairs or outside. As far as data goes even on just 3G the Verizon speeds are much faster. I've done quite a few AT&T vs Verizon 3G side by side tests and Verzion has won every time. 4G is just a bonus for me. When I get a 4G signal there is no comparison. My coworker and I did a speed test on Tuesday at DFW. His iPhone 4s on AT&T vs my Gnex. I was getting 10-15 mbits down and he was getting like 2-3
3G Data
I am having the same exact problem. I thought it was related to airplane mode, I have it turning on at midnight and off at 6am. In the morning, if there is no Wifi and the phone is in 3G, I can't get data. Restarting gets data back, but I'm looking for a more elegant solution than that.
I'm having HUGE data issues, see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421440
just a quick question. are you guys running custom ROMs/kernels? if so, please add that in your post.
none at all here.
I'm in Chicago (both in the city and suburbs), and my S3 always shows "3G" in the notification area.
I know AT&T has an LTE network here, so shouldn't it say 4G or LTE? Could this be a problem with my account--or even the phone?
Thanks.
somewhere in the settings should be a network selection to choose between GSM/LTE(4G) and GSM(3G) only....at least on the Verizon phones there usually is, of course it says CDMA/LTE(4G) or CDMA(3G) only

I have ATT GS3 and it says 4GLTE tiny icon, if you are sure you are in LTE zone and only getting 3g , call AT&T or go to their store , sim could be old/wrong and or your account was not properly activated.
When i got my GS3 i wasnt getting any data at all , called AT&T and they sorted it out.
Run speedtest see what you getting ?
I have at&t in chicago as well. I live up in lake county and work in des plaines. I was also at navy pier a few weeks ago. Never had anything other than 4g or LTE. I literally have never seen the 3g icon on my phone

Thanks for the replies. I'll give AT&T a call.
I did run speedtest, while the phone was displaying 3G. the download speed was 7686 and upload 5704.
Well, I called AT&T and they couldn't find any problem. After 20 minutes, they said, "There's a network outage reported in Chicago, so that must be it." I asked how long the outage has lasted, and she said 17 hours. But I've had the phone for four days, and have never seen anything but 3G.
At any rate, they said I would have to call back in a couple of days. That conveniently got the rep off the phone.
I live in a 3G area, and it says 4G on my phone. Makes me feel like they are BSing us to believe 4G is everywhere.
Only time it has been off of 4G is when I"m in an Edge area. Speaking of which, I found it interesting that while driving up I90 in Wyoming (didn't look like anything was there for miles and miles), the data speeds were great. I was so surprised. Driving the much busier highways in the midwest, it is Edge, and it sucks.
Sorry...went off topic.

Your account does need to be flagged as LTE or you won't get LTE service. I'm up in Gurnee and all over Chicagoland has pretty good LTE coverage.
Also, check your APN that you're on the "PTA" and not the older APN settings. If you see anything about cingular wap, you're on the old one.
I recommend going to an AT&T store, it's harder to blow you off when you're up in their face.
I have friends in Aurora, Lombard, Lyons and I used to work downtown; I always had great LTE signal out and about as well as my home area of Gurnee/Libertyville.
Lastly, AT&T distinguishes between "4G" which is HSPA+ and "4G LTE" which is their LTE network. Unless you're running a custom ROM with different icons, you'll have an E for edge (2.5G, total ****), 3G for a 3G area that hasn't been upgraded, 4G for a 3G area that's been "backhaul upgraded" to HSPA+ and 4G with a little LTE beneath it for an LTE area.
For me, I can tell speed-wise between "4G" and "4G LTE" mostly by the upload speed. HSPA+ (4G) I never see above 1.2Mbps or so, whereas on LTE I get up to 5Mbps roughly. Sad story is the LTE network in the Chicago area is the slowest of their LTE networks that I've seen anyway. I get so jealous of people in TX and whatnot that get like 24Mbps!
Sorry for the rambling...
One weird thing...when I click on my results in speedtest, it lists the network as LTE, even though the icon always shows 3G.
So maybe it's connecting to LTE, but not showing the correct icon? Does a download speed of 7686 seem faster than 3G?
To follow up, in case this helps anyone...
I spent another half hour on the phone with AT&T--level 1 and level 2 tech support. (The level 2 guy was much less informed than the level 1 woman.) Their bottom line was that I should exchange the phone.
However, when I use the network signal info app, it says I'm on the LTE network. So, I think I have an icon problem, not an actual network connection problem.
I think I'll just live with it, rather than exchange the phone.
Has anyone else been having a problem with their newly purchased Sprint S6 where the signal shows as 1 bar LTE on the s6 while other phones activated on sprint show better LTE signal at the same location? Even though the s6 and other phone's downloads speeds are the same, it always shows as 1, max 2 bars lte on the S6, although when placing a call the LTE indicator shows more bars for some reason. My family has two new S6's on our plan, and their both experiencing this issue. That and a few calls that didn't go through are making my dad freak out and wanna go back to his GS4.

Bars don't matter, what matters is Settings-->About Device-->Status--->Signal Strength.
I know, but I think there may be an error with the LTE indicator in the notification bar, and my dad says its driving him crazy.

Mine is the same.
i have the same problem. i updated my prl and profile to see if it would help and it didn't. then contacted sprint and they did a manual provision refresh. that seemed to solve the problem for now.
Mine is at one damn bar of LTE everywhere... doesnt seem to affect my speed of data usage... its fast... but it does have to search for that signal allot...
OK I think I see what ya'll are saying now. Just curious, what's your software version, OCF?? Also, anyone got a good fix?
Same here, on OCF
I noticed that as soon as the call connects, the bars shoot up.
I also have this issue on OCF. Question, has anyone rooted OCF yet? If so, which method did you use?
I am in exactly the same boat. I just changed from the S4, and at work we tested our phones side by side an S4, S5, and S6 and mine was the worst. I had to turn my LTE totally off in order to do anything. Please tell me this is something that Samsung can fix because I love this phone and don't know what to do.
Ya know,, 2 days ago I did changed my mobile network settings from Automatic to lte/CDMA. ALSO DID run an PRL update a d such but my signal had great actually, and my battery actually has improved alot since the change. Very well could be an Radio issue. That's what I'm guessing it is
Is it me or does this phone have a issue with making calls example tons of dropped calls, or do I need to get another phone
Guys, Samsung knows about this.... Supposedly will be rolling out an OTA soon to fix it,
Lets hope so. I'm convinced all of this poor battery life is from the modem / signal.

I was messing around if you just select CDMA you will not drop calls until a fix if you guys want to do that
The signal display mainly looks bad because it's a Tri Band phone. On your s4 it would display the voice strength even though you were connected to LTE. On the tri band phones it only connects to LTE, and the switches to voice when making or receiving calls that's why you see the signal jump up when making a call. LTE does not travel/penetrate as well as voice and CDMA, but good news is that it does not have too to get good speeds.
Check out an app called Signal Check. It's cool to actually see your real signal and it just some bars. It will also tell you what band of LTE you are on.

Any info on a update I can't take all the dropped calls driving me crazy now
Even on OC9, we were experiencing the dropped calls. Finally, updated to OCF today, to see if it helped, but actually feel it may have gotten worse, seem to be experiencing more dropped calls.
Ever since I downloaded the Lollipop update I constantly have dropped calls. I am typically on 1x here (Never 4g so advanced calling is off and isn't part of the issue as I don't have 4g in my area). The phone will occasionally show 3g. It seems whenever the call is dropped it switches from 1x to 3g. Is this simply because it lost the 1x signal and is now showing 3g for data until I make another call? Or is it something to do with a 1x to 3g "handshake" that isn't transitioning properly?
Hi,
I've been using Android Auto for calls in my car and think I have a problem.
When I look on my screen I can see, that I'm in 4G. If I start or receive a call it goes instantly in 2G or H.
Now I've found the "extended 4G" option and enabled it.
So the screen shows now that I'm on 4G while calling. So everything seems good. When I drive into a not 4G covered area, it steps back to 2G (seems okay for me) But: I can talk as much as I want and drive into the biggest cities where I absolutely know, that theres 4G coverage, the phone never comes back to 4G while the call. It's locked into 2G.
When the call is over, it switches back to 4G as usual.
But why is it locked to 2G while calling when it's a little time not in covered 4G area?
Google VOLTE and SRVCC. In short behavior you have noticed is normal.
