SGH-I747 SIII Wi-Fi ALWAYS scanning, even when connected? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Does anyone know why the SIII continuously scan for available wifi networks, even though its already connected? Any apps out there to disable this function? Thoughts? Ideal?

Tried disabling wifi powersaving mode by dialing *#0011# but still it connects, scans, stops scanning, resumes scanning, and so on, endlessly chewing through my battery. Am on an sgs3 i747 connected to a good strong wireless-n signal. Connection doesn't drop, but it doesn't stop scanning.

I asked about this before too with no replies. Wifi is by far my biggest source of battery consumption.

I don't know why but android just does this. I know I've seen roms from my old phones that would change the scan interval to 120 seconds in the build prop to conserve battery and it did help a lot. If you're planning to make any changes to build prop i highly advise you make a nandroid backup first as well as a backup of your build.prop incase you mess things up.

Thanks- very helpful. What do you use to modify the settings?
I've searched and found different apps to modify the build.prop file, but I can't find the actual file in my phone - must be doing something wrong, or is it just via specific apps that people change their build.prop settings?

Installed build.prop editor from Play store. But can't find the setting to edit- other than ro.wifi.channels, don't see anything that suggests wifi interval. Choking on my own noobness over here.
---------- Post added at 07:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:46 PM ----------
Used build.prop editor, made a backup, then added an entry
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval
with value of
10800 (=60 seconds * 60 * 3 to adjust the interval to 3 hours)
Backed out and rebooted successfully. But no change- wifi still connects, then scans, then pauses, then scans, etc, without ever losing the connection. Ready to give up and begin shopping for a second battery.

How can you tell that it still scans for WiFi after its connected? Anyways, try going to Settings > Wifi > Advanced > and untick Auto Connect (to AT&T wifi). Maybe that's your problem.

3 hours is extreme and I do not suggest it. Also I am not sure but I believe android will scan for wifi when you open the wifi settings. It only makes sense that it would because why else would you be there unless you wanted to find or add networks.
I forgot to add that having a file explorer that has root access is suggested. I use root explorer myself. Build.prop is found in the system folder and can be modified with root explorer by pressing and holding the buildprop and choosing open in text editor. Root explorer will automatically create a backup as well.

Good point that it may only be scanning when I'm on the wifi networks page observing it. Given the dramatically worse battery life when on wifi, I don't think that's the case, but you may be right.
Just a heads-up as I restore my nandroid backup- using build prop editor, I edited the setting to shorten the interval back and bricked the phone. Trouble is that the sgs3 with its MTP protocol won't let me connect via usb to restore the build.prop backup. So I'm forced to do a full restore.

Because when your connected to WiFi, in your WiFi settings you can see it always scanning. It scans like every few seconds. I will try the auto connect to AT&T and see what happens

AT&T unticked, scans, connected to WiFi with a strong or weak signal, scans, WiFi on not connected, scans. Not sure why in the hell it does this. I am only a USER of all the customized stuff on the fourms, not a developer. So noting an issue and testing out a solution is all I have
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Edited build.prop, but the perpetual scanning while connected persists. Battery life is better with juicedefender, but it seems that the build.prop parameters are different for ICS / sgs3 than those that I've been able to find elsewhere on XDA and elsewhere.

I could be wrong on this but I believe the wifi does have to renew its ip periodically with whatever network it is on. This is also going to be a battery drain that you are noticing.

Correct - but here it's scanning and re scanning every 5 seconds, continuously.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium

Shamelessly bumping this one back up - still convinced that it's the key to our battery woes but can't find an app or a build.prop fix for it.

Help with wireless tether app

I just rooted my phone mostly for the WiFi but it's doing something a little strange now. Whenever I turn on the Wireless Tether app it shows multiple access points coming from my phone, 5 to be exact. Is there something I'm missing, a way to clear the unwanted names?
Have a screenshot?

Yep, here's what my wireless connections pop up as when I turn on the "Wireless Tether" app.
Note: The Top "Walker" is my home network and the rest are all generated by the phone.
Try reseeting the app and then try activating wpa.Tht way only authorized users can access ur wifi

I've done that but I still have 5 seperate access points being sent out from my phone. I can't seem to change any of the setting for 4 of them.
anyone have any ideas?

You are not alone.
I used os monitor to see 5 occurrences of internet active - sometimes more.
They won't kill and effect memory terribly. Sometimes a reboot is required, however, the internet occurences are still there. The reboot only clears some memory to allow evo to run fast again.
I have no idea how to fix.
By the way, what app did you use to see those occurances. I'd like to check it out.
Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion that is actually a screen shot of my desktop to show multiple access points being listed. I wish there was an app that looked like that to show available wifi.
You get non of those (in your screen shot) when your phone is off?
It's a wildcard, but possible your neighbors have evo's too and running the tether software...

Negative, I can visibly watch them pop up when I turn the tether on and they go away as soon as i turn it off. It also seemed that when I tried to rename one instead of renaming one of them, it would make another access point. Very peculiar.
FWIW...I switched to CM6 and it's all cleared up.
Yea I was gonna say, that's your computer if you change the name and your computer keeps the old ones and adds the new one. My laptop does that too but I can remove them individually.

[Q] Endless scanning wifi and other wifi issues

Does anyone else have there phone continuously scanning wifi, once every 5 seconds or so, even when connected? Just go into wifi settings and see if it is scanning often. Additionally i get a lot of "Connected to abc network" messages in other applications when i thought my connection was established already long ago. And often find that even though im connected it is not passing data. I get ping times in the 200 + range to yahoo.com when a computer on the same network gets 50ms ping times. The wifi is the only issue i have with the phone, but my old S3 did not act this way and i want to know what everyone else is seeing, so i can send it back or get it fixed.
Thank you!

How would fixing permissions, fix wifi scanning?
Couldn't tell you it just did. Resetting my phone and router didn't do it.
One solid day after fixing permissions seems to have fixed it Lol. Did you happen to flash some morphology? Just asking

Another option would be to set up profiles. And disable wifi all together in the profile you use when your out and about. And enable it in the profile you use at home with your wifi. And then just switch between the profiles.

[Q] WiFi Tether Settings Help

So I know there are quite a few threads out there about wifi tether. The general concensus is that WiFi Tether is the best app to use, however I've found that very particular settings are needed to get this to work. While I am not a dev and have not had sucess in getting this app to work on our phone. I thought I would start a thread for those who have had success using the application in hopes that they could share their settings with the rest of us so we can take advantage of 4g as it continues to roll out. I have also tried Barnacle and not had any success either.
I found this on another thread, it was a couple pages deep so I'm reposting here, please swing over to other thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2138144&highlight=wifi+tether&page=2 #13 and give jdock a thanks for his fix. This works, but there is currently a bug in JB that only allows one tether session per boot. Once you disable wifi tether, it will not work again until you reboot the device
TY jdock
Try this:
device profile = generic ics/jb (wlan0)
setup method = netd-ndc (master)
wifi driver reload = checked
enable wifi encryption = unchecked (you can enable it later when it's working unencrypted)
enable access-control = unchecked (you can enable it later when the basics are working)
Now, when I first started with this app, my devices would connect to the AP but then give up because they couldn't get a dhcp address. I found that if I went into the 'change lan' menu and picked a different lan, that it started working (I currently use 10.10.3.0/24).
If you can't get it working, I came up with another method you may be able to use that does not use any app (I have the at&t model but it's probably the same). Basically you turn off wifi, then run a few commands (as root) that bring the wifi interface back up without disabling mobile data. It will connect to your local wireless lan as if you had enabled wifi. Then you can run a socks or http proxy and point your other device at it (easy if you're wanting to tether a pc, maybe not so easy if you're using something else). I haven't tried yet to see if it will route between the networks, which would mean you can just manually change your default gateway to your phone's wlan address and have all traffic go through it.

I hope you get some answers. I haven't been able to get this app to work on by GNex on JB 4.2.1 OR 4.2.2 using 4 different ROMs. The app doesn't seem to have been updated in many months, and I'm assuming that it won't work on JB in any form.

I'm on a JB rom now, and it does work. See the directions I posted from another thread in the OP and wifi tether will work. However, once you turn off wifi tether you will need to reboot the phone for wifi and data to function normally.
Even when Wi-Fi tether runs "with errors" it still works... for some reason my phone doesn't heat up as much when I run with errors -- probably had something to do with the Wi-Fi driver that the app reloads.

My wifi tether setup has no issues with data not working and I can turn it off and on without problems. I've used the phone for calls, texts, and internet after using wifi tether. The only issue is that you cannot turn wifi on after running tether. Once rebooted wifi will turn back on until I use tether again. I'm on a stock rooted JB rom.

I have access control checked as well but that doesn't matter.
I've yet to be able to get this app working. I've tried these setting before and several other settings to no avail. When I try these, everything but the first item in the log and the last two say they failed. Now it does broadcast it's SSID and I can join the network, but there is no data connection.
I'm on stock Jelly Bean rom. The funny thing is, I used Wifi tether app on Lifeless and Imperium and it worked with a few different settings.

Glad to see other people are able to contribute. I'm not a developer so not much I can do except dig around other forums and see what helps. I'm using Imperium Initiative v2.0.1 with wifi tether, with the settings in my op. Maybe there are some adjustments in imperium/lifeless that cause this to work. I will try the file posted and report back to see if I can re-enable wifi after disabling tether.

Generic ics/jb Wlan0
Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Netd max client cmd - checked
Enable WiFi-Encryption - checked
WiFi-driver reload 2 - checked
Enable Access-Control - checked (If this is checked the first time the client connects, you have to grant it access from your phone. You'll notice a new icon on the top of your phone where all of your running program icons are. When you see it just pull down the list and select it and check your client and then hit apply)Routing fix - checked
Hope this helps
something probably worth mentioning on this, I'm currently on Lifeless 14, and the connections optimizer was screwing with this app. I turned it off and it worked like a charm.
Not of concern to anyone AOSP/AOKP/CM/PA but for stock/lifeless/imperium(i think) this is worth looking into for some folks.

[Q] Wifi Connection Settings Don't Survive Reboot

Good Morning!
I recently reflashed a CWM packaged version of Stock 4.4.2 with root built in. Everything was fine except the wifi. It turned on for the initial boot and setup, but then got in a stuck off state. I fixed that by deleting the wpa_supplicant.conf file in /data/misc/wifi and rebooting. The file was recreated on reboot and everything was dandy... or so I thought. I began to notice though that after every reboot I'd have to reconnect to my home wifi (pick SSID, enter password etc). Wifi would connect and stay connected until the next reboot. After doing some investigating I found that the wpa_suppplicant.conf file is being rewritten back to empty stock after every reboot, and I cannot for the life of me figure out why. As far as I can tell, this is causing the phone to "forget" all connections.
Also, this may be related, but there is also an empty directory in the wifi folder named wpa_supplicant.
Has anyone seen this behavior before, and if so, do you know how to fix it? Thanks

Wifi Problem

Hi everybody, i'm new around here and this will be my first post. Sorry if i'm posting this thread in the wrong category, but i have no idea where i should post it.
Anyway, so early morning started using my nexus 7, turn my wifi on went to play store but couldn't connect to the store, nor could i use any other apps that needed wifi. It was weird, because the wifi logo was showing, but there was no wifi.
I've never rooted it or anything, my device is still locked, could it be something wrong with the internal?
Or could i accidentally have deleted some important file? I have noticed that the clean master app uses awfully long time to find unnecessary files, when i'm using the clean option.
I really don't know what to do, as i'm not a pro.
- I hope someone on this forum can help

You can almost be certain that you did not delete anything important, as those System files require root to remove. So, that fear aside, it could be a few things you need to check. You probably just deleted the saved wifi profile information in the same way many computer cleaners clear your browser cache and you have to reenter previously saved passwords.
First, go to Settings -> Wifi and then on the left should be your SSID name and it will have something under it, which will be helpful to know. It will either say "Connected", "Secured with WPA/WP2", or "Out of Range".
If it says "Connected", your tablet is communicating with your WIFI Access Point, but for some reason is not able to get out. This is likely a router port configuration issue (which can get complicated if you do not know about them), there could be an IP Address Conflict with another device, or your internet may be out. Rebooting the Router often times fixes many issues.
If it says "Secured with xxxx" it means your tablet is seeing the access point, but there is an authentication error and they are not connected. This could be because of an encryption/password change on the router, or somehow, when you wiped your tablet, you just happened to zero out the WiFi profile for your network. If that is the case, click the Name of your network, hit "Forget", turn your Wifi off, and then back on. It should detect your network, and when you select it, prompt you for the encryption key/password for your network. Just re-enter it, and it should connect up. If you see the Wifi Signal, but it is dark on the status bar, this will cause it. If you re-enter and it does not sync up, try rebooting your tablet, and it should connect when it restart.

If you see the Wifi Signal, but it is dark on the status bar, this will cause it. If you re-enter and it does not sync up, try rebooting your tablet, and it should connect when it restart.

Thanks for the quick reply, i tried all the instructions above and some of them i've tried twice, but there's still no wifi.
Do you have no wifi everywhere? Like McDonald's or Starbuck? Or is it just at home?

It just happened today so i haven't brought it anywhere, but my phone and laptop seems to work fine. Could it maybe be something internal?
Despite the fact that other devices work, try rebooting your router if you have access.

Oops. Sorry, I missed reading you'd done that. Next step is to try another wifi source. Do you have a phone with hotspot?
BTW, airesgodofwar gave you an excellent troubleshooting guide. Just make sure that all web access is not working. If that's the case, factory reset may be needed. That will wipe all user data so don't attempt that yet.

Just tried to connect to my sisters wifi hotspot and it worked yay!
Does that mean that there's something wrong with the router? And how come it's only the tablet that can't get access?
- okay, so my wifi suddenly started to work again and I have no idea why. But without your help i would probably have panicked and factory reset my device, so thanks for your help! I appreciate it.
Did you reboot it? If so, try again but leave it off for a full minute or two. Technically, I can't explain it, but it happens that something in the router gets lost/misdirected (just like on your tablet, phone, pc) and a reboot is needed. I've had every one of a dozen devices access the web through the router while one tablet could not.
If another router reboot doesn't work, turn off the modem and the router (if separate) then restart modem then router.

Likely an IP Address conflict, meaning that your router assigned 2 devices the same IP address on your LAN. I should have said, when you reboot your router (which usually solves most issues), you need to hard reset it to clear the current IP tables usually, meaning you need to unplug for 30 seconds before you plug it back in, or if it has a reset button, hold it in for 30 seconds before releasing.
Good news is that it does not sound like it has anything to do with your tablet, so no need to reset it.
