Sprint users who switched from EVO LTE to Galaxy S3 - Chime in! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Just would like your thoughts and opinions... I'm on the fence between EVO 4G LTE or Galaxy S3.

Evo lte has better camera, sgs iii has 2gb ram.
Pretty much the only difference.

I didnt find the camera on the evo better. The phone its self just dosent feel as smooth. The battery was horrible and its just ugly lol. The s3 is just a more complete phone imo. And im not alone. People on craigslist are trading there evo lte + $100 for an S3. This phone to me is the most complete phone ever. Idk where you go from here. Im eligible for 2 new ugrades in april. It will take alot for me to actually use them lol

Return it and you will never look back, I did.

The only reason I switch was because of the network I went with tmobile and got the galaxy s3, the evo felt like the right device ,camera is better on the evo IMO, and specs says it as well, the only thing I hated the much in the eco is the multitasking is useless and will closed apps really soon, if you like accessories and to root I would go with the the gs3,so far this phone has a great community ,even got cm10 already running and accessories will keep coming and coming since is one device in all networks, the evo had better battery life in my testing but it could be cause it closed a lot app in the background
This is why I like tmobile

The best thing you could do is go to sprint and check them out out for yourself, you aren't going to get the answer you are looking for here, different folks like different things go check them out and see what you like.

I have both devices. I see no reason at all using evo lte over sgs3.
I can't really think of a single good thing about evo lte which is better than sgs3. Maybe that it's slightly thinner...

I had the HTC EVO LTE for a week and returned it for the S3, I have not had a single regret since. My biggest complaint on the HTC was multitasking, I would stream music and open one app, this would usually go OK, on the second app the music would stop. ERRR.
It's incorrect to say it's due to the S3 2gb or ram either my previous phone, the hugely inferior VM Optimus could handle this, sure it started to lag but at least the music didn't just stop.
This was my main issue, but in almost all other aspects the s3 has been better in my opinion.

I just sold my Evo LTE today on eBay. It was a good device but the S3 is superior overall. The Evo is also easily prone to bending due to its design but it never happened to mine since I always took care of it. Both devices have great cameras. The screen on both is excellent but it's really just personal preference. HTC also takes a while releasing its source which makes it harder for developers to work their magic. Samsung is developer friendly
Sent from my SPH-L710

I would say go try them both out and see which one you like more. You're posting this in a galaxy s3 forum, of course the majority will say gs3. If you go post it in the one x forum, then you'll probably get the majority saying one x.
It depends on what you need out of the phone and which feels nicer. The one x has a brighter screen and a little nicer camera. The gs3 has a nicer battery(in my experience, though it varies by phone) and it is removable, along with an SD card slot and 2 gb of ram. One has touchwiz and one has sense 4.
Good luck on your choice, they're both amazing phones, I'm sure you'll be happy with either of them.

Multitasking on the evo is painful, worse than my old evo 4g. Gs3 is way smoother and has a better community.

I made the switch. The build quality is better on the Evo and I would argue screen is more natural but not as vibrant. Everything else is vastly superior on S3.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium

thanks guys. I actually posed the question on both EVO and S3 forum. Looks like i'm leaning towards s3!

Came from an og evo and an evo 3d to the s3 I just wanted to try something else, however the evo lte screen looks unbelievable

another dead horse!

Tried the EVO LTE for 3 days and went back to the ET4g, then to the GS3. Screen size was the "seller" for me. Definite difference. The HTC seemed out of proportion too long and narrow. Maybe I'm just picky... JMO.
I'd definitely actually handle a couple of live phones to see which you like better, good luck.

I know, hence the "lol" at the end. I do believe it's a bad move though, but I can kind of see that those 17k followers were potential traffic to the site, which means more advertiser money. Honestly though, I hope they drop it, or Noah just changes his twitter name.
Cool video. on the network speeds. I'd rather not see so clearly how slow sprint speeds are so I can live in my happy phone land.
The only disagreement I'd have is that there is one other thing the Nexus has on our phone:
That is one beautiful screen...

the area where phonedog is located just seems to have terrible sprint coverage where as if you look at wirefly reviews, sprint 4g gets over 10mbps. that's why I think reviews should be done with wifi instead of carrier signal (phonedog uses 3g for their reviews).
My thoughts on the two phones:
GNexus
Pros:
Great Screen/Resolution
Ice Cream Sandwich
Verizon Network (BLAZING 4G speed compared to Sprint/T-Mobile out here)
Cons:
No expandable memory (but 32GB for LTE model is solid)
Usable screen space - When the menu buttons are visible, it has less physical screen real estate than the E4GT from my hands-on comparison (ignoring resolution advantage).
Awkward shape and "taller" than the E4GT
"Feel" is lacking
Lackluster hardware
E4GT
Pros:
Expandable memory
Shape and Feel
Faster GPU
Cons:
Touchwiz, Touchwiz, and Touchwiz (Which is OK for 2.3, but not ICS IMO)
No Official Ice Cream Sandwich Yet - And when we do get it it will be Touchwiz-burdened
Sprint Network
The only real advantage for me when comparing the two phones was Ice Cream Sandwich. I did not care for the feel of the LTE GNexus and was not happy with Verizon (did not like the price, limited data, or the sales people), so I gave Sprint my business instead and ended up with the E4GT. I LOVE this phone, I just wish that the Sprint network was a bit more robust out here in Colorado.
My two cents anyway.
I think the screen on the ET is much better than the screen on the nexus. the nexus has more pixels but thats it.
as for the other cons I don't get it. First thing I did was ditch touchwiz. that is a "user option" not a con. install whatever launcher you want.
Sprint may be slower but its cheaper and its truly unlimited.
what is the point of 20MB/s if you use up all your available bandwidth in a few days? or even HOURS ?
I am confident sprint will "fix up" the bandwidth issues.
as for verizon they are irrelevant. moot. I can't afford the monthly bill so its a non issue.
If I spent that much money on a GNex, and then took it home and ran a ~1600 quadrant score, I'd wanna just vomit all over myself.
(Yeah, I know the old mantra: "quadrants don't mean sh*t", but still: there's gotta be a lot of credit given to the exynos processor to crank out ~4500 scores right out of the box.)

Giving up on nexus

Tried two and that's when I knew I better get out now before my 15 days was over. I must say , the galaxy nexus was the coolest phone I've ever used. Ics is amazing as is the beautiful screen on the nexus.
The dropped calls, bad battery life, below average camera, missed calls, texts that never were, pitiful LTE reception, and defective screen are all a few of the problems I couldn't live with anymore.
Bummer. Good luck with your next phone.

Sorry to hear you have had such a bad experience. I just got mine today and am very impressed with ICS and the display of the phone. I turned off 4G right away as I would rather save on battery life.
Sounds like you got a bad batch of the GN.

100%. Oh what's that...you are not going to use the phone we all have? Thanks for sharing.....
As for everyone else...9 Android devices in a year...not because I am unhappy with them but because I LOVE phones and new technology. My only gripes are how annoying MTP is and the lack of an SD card slot. A kick stand could be cool, but overall.....10/10.
I'm not a fanboy, I just feel like fro the first time in a long time I got exactly what I paid for. No issues here at all.

I would love to see stats comparing failure rates, scratched screens and bugs between the GSM and LTE version. Going on Reddit, XDA and a few other sources the LTE device seems to be far more problematic.
I was going to write a longer reply to this thread, but I'm to busy posting in forums for phones I don't own.
I just don't understand the point (if there is any) of threads like this one. Everyone has the right to their own opinion but what do they expect out of these threads? Do they think people will notice or even care that they didn't stick with a phone or whatever it may be? No offense OP, I just can't understand these threads.

That may be true, but theres clearly an overall higher count of LTE users on XDA here. The international crowd (and US importers) are the minority of the "general user" type conversing here.
My screen has "grain" and the mini popping speaker sound. Plus no warranty and this is still the best Android phone to date IMO

Yea, I'm sure OP would appreciate the 5 minute battery life, the small lcd screen, and of course the amazing Scorpion chip that is based on 3 year old architecture
My screen had "grain" when I got it, and what looked to be burn in, but those have gone now, and have to say screen is almost perfect.
As for Rezound... I will personally, never use an LCD again unless they stop making LED screens.

Convince me to buy the GNex

5 months into my 2 year contract with my S2 and running Cyanogenmod 9. I really like AOSP and wish I got the Galaxy Nexus. Right now, I can sell the S2 for £240 and get the GNex for £370. But I can't justify the £130 difference. All I would get is a working camcorder and and an amazing screen for poorer battery life, camera and no sd support.
Convince me.

i had an S2 and sold it earlier in the year as i got a free Xperia Ray which i thought i'd be happy with but yesterday i got a really good deal on a mint Nexus.. and i couldnt be happier. Battery life seems pretty much consistent with my S2, i left it charged over night, took it off charge at 6.15 and im at 52% now, thats with listening to music on the way to work and some web browsing and probably a little more than average playing with it as its new. I am pretty happy with that. The Ray for such a small phone was actually worse for me in terms of battery life.. maybe it was the widgets etc I had installed.
As for advantages over the s2? for me its the missing Samsung logo from the front never liked that.. and there is a nice feeling to knowing its a 'pure' android experience.. my S2 was full of bloatware that could only be deleted by rooting. I dont take pictures really with the phone so im not in anyway dissapointed with the camera on the nexus. It is a little bulkier than the s2 but i like the shape and feel.. i cant imagine using a bigger phone though.. its the full of my hand when holding it..
in terms of performance i cant see there being much in it between the s2 and this..
Its all down to individual preference really.. a few s2 owners i've showed it to say they would miss the physical home button etc.. and the headphone socket on the bottom means you need to turn it upside down in your shirt pocket..
Also the lack of sd slot is a downside.. i dont mind it.. but it would have been nice to have the option to stick a 32gb card in there.. or at least make 32gb the standard internal memory..
So far no complaints..

Why can't we just have a compare, contrast, and opinions. The reason this type of thread happens over and over is because of all the trolling and flaming back and forth which leads to lock. Be better if it was just one nice clean thread with good input and actual comparisons.
I went with the Evo because of the kickstand, screen, and camera button. I'd be able to get more feedback once I get the phone.
By the way, I had a thread like this Monday and it was shut down because people were bickering. Wish people could lose their "e"-go and just converse normally.
I'm leaning towards the Evo as well, for better camera w/button, kickstand, nicer design, and superior screen. I'm just afraid it'll have quality control issues down the road whereas I have no such fear with the SIII.

What quality control issues......I have never had a htc with dust under the screen or a crooked screen......none of my first 3 evo had any problems that's why I exchanged them...but when I did get a good one it was good

While i want to believe htc has gotten better, i was one of the unfortunates that got an original EVO with the screen separation issue. The faceplate/screen was detaching from the phone and it took weeks for Sprint to accept it was an issue, it was separating right in front of one of their techs at a corporate store and they said repeatedly "sorry, dont see it listed as an issue", even though 2 seconds of google searching at that point showed it was widespread. After weeks of stress and a plethora of phone calls they finally accepted reality and said they would swap my phone....with no promise it would be a fixed "new batch/fixed" model. It was truly unbelievable the way it was handled, on HTC's and Sprint's part.
So while i loved the evo, once I FINALLY got a decent one, the heartache of the experience makes me say....Samsung all the way

A good example post of reasons of why you choose one over another by "ExtraCrispy"
SGS3
1. TW over Sense - can someone tell me exactly what is so great about Sense? The chief virtue of Sense 4 everyone seems to be raving about is how much less obtrusive it is (removing the corousel, quick settings etc). It has zero new features, except for the coverflow style task list. The new TouchWiz has a ton of features, some of them may end being gimmicks, but may be useful. And Sense is a heavy skin - even in the E4GLTE, you can sometimes see the dreaded 'reloading Sense' when you press home.
2. Better buttons - I don't need a dedicated task list button when long press on home does the job. I do mind my screen space being taken by the menu bar for tons of legacy apps and any app which is marked compatible with GB. GS3 made the right decision with a menu button
3. Root - S-OFF on new HTC phones is very hard, gone are the days of simple rooting like with the Evo 4G. HTC's dev unlock is crap. Galaxy phones are much simpler to root. And cutom roms/kernels are a big part of Android for me.
4. Hardware differences are basically irrelevant. In the US both will have the S4, the screens are close enough and both have microSD support. There are endless debates about plastic vs aluminum, build quality, looks and so on which are all down to subjective opinion.
5. Audio/Video - The Evo will probably do better in low light due to the better aperture (f/2.0 vs 2.6) but the picture quality is probably same on both (GS3 has a newer sensor, Evo uses th eone from the GS2), they both have the same software features (Evp uses a separate ISP, but GS3 does the same stuff in software), and video recording is definitely better on the GS3 (full bitrate HD video). GS3 also has the better DAC, though most likely US versions won't have the Wolfson.
6. GS3 comes with 50GB vs 25GB Dropbox.
I say skip both and get galaxy nexus for now if not wait for galaxy note im getting galaxy nexus first for the lte and then galaxy note buying both retail price

I'm getting the evo lte. Can't stand touchwiz. Ive always been a big fan of HTC and sense so its a no brainer for me. Hopes it makes up for how crappy the evo 3d was.

This question is unanswerable until both phones have been out at least 2 months. That way you can be able to evaluate the developer scene, and see which phone really is the best.

Wow, I am kinda thinking the same. Having 2 lines (one with a Nexus series, one with a Galaxy series) is a lot of fun. Having the ET4G and S3 would be nice but I just don't know. If a phone comes along that is truly mind blowing I would buy it off contract. I still don't know what the hell I am going to do with my June 1 upgrade. I am going to be researching like crazy the next few weeks though
Im leaning more towards the EVO at the moment as well.

G Pro or Wait?

Finally got my termination letter from Sprint and will be switching to ATT sometime this month. I want to get a "Phablet" I know the new G2 coming out has a smaller screen and the Note 3 is going to have a bigger screen (Don't want to pay $300 for it either). I've only got until the end of the month, I don't really keep up with the new things coming out, is there anything really worth waiting for?
It really depends on what you are looking for. HTC will have there Phablet out soon, but honestly I would still take the ogp over any phone that's coming out for the next 8 months or so, lol. I've had tons of phones and as far as the g pro goes, it's the best features of every phone I've came across so far

No. I was waiting for the Nexus 5, hoping it would be 5.5", but it's now all but confirmed to be 4.96". Bought an OG Pro today.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. Going to go pick one up for myself and an HTC One Mini for the girl tomorrow. Are there any GOOD competitors to the HTC One? I know it's the wrong place to ask but I hate starting topics, usually don't even post.

That's with 5+ hours of screen on time, mind you.
I'm not thinking there is another phone out there (Note series of phones included), that can pull off this kind of battery longevity. I didn't tweak ANYTHING. Only thing it has is the PAC ROM flashed.

Go with htc one I don't think there is anything like it.
OGP can't get anything better at that price, if money not an issue the go for Note 3.
It depends if you want customize your phone... I have had every phone under the sun and just keep coming back to the ogpro.. Its a good solid phone.. Keep in mind all new phones are going to be locked that means no ROMs until they can unlock it... And its been how long now and the s4 bootloader is still locked... The lg pro is by far one of the best if not the best out

Picked them both up today and a tablet, paying the same price as sprint even with the tablet. So far service is SUPERIOR to Sprint. 4G at my house was unheard of yesterday. Went from 1 bar to Full. Text's seem to come through faster, calls are clear. Loving it so far. :good:
It's funny I just discussed this same thing with my gf yesterday in regards to keeping this phone or not. I too have had a lot of android phones from the HTC eris, original Droid, to the incredible, and GS3. ..and this phone is by far superior to all. Battery is the best I've ever experienced. I've tries iPhone, Windows phone, other androids....I love this phone even with the minimal development right now.

G2 victories over G Pro:
- Cutting-edge graphics chip
- Ridiculous battery life
- OIS
- Interesting button setup
G Pro victories over G2:
- Bigger screen (+0.3" diagonal PLUS real estate gained by physical face buttons)
- microSD
- Awesome off-contract price, 50% lower contract price
- Removable battery
It's kind of an interesting contest. I really hate that you can't just have it all, but that's life. According to this list the G Pro is the clear winner for me, which is why a G Pro is making its way to me now from an eBay seller (I just had to save that extra $80 ).
If you care a lot about high-end gaming, the G2 is the definite way to go, no question. The battery life on the G2 is insane too, like mind-blowingly insane. If you're looking for a new kind of battery life experience people really haven't seen with a smartphone before (unless it was with a giant aftermarket battery), get the G2.
Otherwise, to me, the G Pro kind of takes the crown. I love huge screens (not Xperia Z Ultra huge, mind you lol) and on paper 5.2" sounds close enough, but those soft face buttons really steal a lot of real estate so it's not just 0.3" difference. The buttons pretty much only go away on video playback. I don't care about the graphics performance I lose by not going with the G2 since I'm only coming from a Galaxy Note N7000, but I really wish I could have the G2 battery life.
Cant really go wrong with this phone especially if you buy it out right I think it's the most bang for your buck. It's big it's fast it's very nicely designed we finally have some nice options for roms available plus it has removable battery and storage if you're into that sort of thing. Even on a stock rom the phone is solid rooted or not. I wish there were more accessories available like cases but I get by. I'm actually running my phone naked now and so far I haven't dropped it yet lol.
