Installing custom kernel? - HTC One X

Here's the deal, I'm planing of installing Faux kernel alongside ARHD. Is this the correct way?
1. Flash boot.img for ARHD.
2. Install ARHD using CWM.
3. Flash boot.img for Faux kernel.
4. Install Faux using CWM.
And also, is it better to get the regular Faux kernel or the repacked one?

Yup, sounds correct.
You can try using the standard "faux" kernel. Since ARHD is based on the original source that might work, though you might need the modules that normally come with the kernel (I m currently using the Franco kernel). You can easily install them using CWM, its not a big deal.
I´d give it a try hence u cant destroy anything anyway since u can flash any kernel, module etc. using Fastboot n CWM even after the installation.

That's good to hear!
Just another fast question. Have you used Faux kernel, and if so, which one do you recommend, Faux or Franco?

Why would you install faux whey you have a stable and reliable rom like ARHD with stock kernel. I had faux and franco on my previous rom...constant overheating, restarts and lock freeze arent worth the extra battery life it gives you.

Hmm, running faux 0.4b6 and InsertCoin, it gets burning hot when playing Dead Trigger. Just thought it maybe would get better with ARHD and 0.4b7. Guess I'll begin with the stock kernel.

For me, the coolest kernel is the stock one, I have tried Franco and Faux kernels but they both get my phone Hot, may be because of increased performance, especially during games

[Q] Stock Kernel CWM file?

The various Kernels and ROM's in the Dev seem to be getting good reviews and I'm very intrigued by the BLN support in Jug's and Synergy... I'd like to flash one of the Kernels and try it out but what's holding me back is that I don't see a clockwork recovery version of the stock, rooted Kernel.
Is there one out there or is the best course of action to do a full CWM backup prior to installing a new Kernel and revert to it if I desire the stock kernel back?
Thanks!

A nandroid backup doesn't backup the kernel, just an exactly image of your system. The best way to go back to stock kernel is Odin Bubby stock kernel.

Romanbb posted a flashable zip of the stock kernel in his kernel thread...

Returning your handset back to stock. Telus T989D

Hi
I know this question has been asked before but i havent received a definite answer as yet and i would like to be cautious. I am planning to root my phone but i wiuld like to be able to revert back to stock if needed. I have an idea on the procedure of Unrooting from the guides. My only problem i am having trouble understanding is after i flash the stock rom back, i would also have to flash the stock kernel. The problem is the link i found that has the stock kernel is dead. Would i be able to back up my stock kernel before flashing a new rom and kernel?
Last question is are modified kernels functional with stock rom? For example i am thinking of first trying out synergy kernel. Would i experience any performance changes with just the kernel?
Thanks for the help

I can tell you from personal experience with having to return one s2 x to Telus that there is no issue with reverting back to stock. just do a nandroid backup before flashing your ROM and kernel then you just need to find a stock recovery to flash. I can find mine that I used if you need it.
as far as kernel improvements go, I am really enjoying the ability to overclock. I get about 26 hours of moderate to heavy use using profiles with setcpu. Also bln is handy.
Since you are T989D I would recommend synergy kernel with Mr. X Telus ROM. That's what I an using and am loving it. it is very stable. I haven't even had one random reboot yet!

Thanks for the reply JROCxvl. I was planning on using the synergy kernel, was just worried about flashing back with a stock kernel as I was not sure if nandroid backup backs up your kernel as well. I thought I read it does not. I also wanted to ask about BLN. Using the synergy kernel with stock telus rom would work with BLN?
I can't believe your usage hours. Crazy. Does setcpu basically underclock your cpu when your phone is idle? And you can use setcpu with just a kernel change? I would not need to install a rom as well?
Thanks again for the help man.

Kernel/ROM install order

Probably a pretty stupid question but I'm doing some flashing today and I'm curious. Does it matter which order I flash the Rom and Kernel in? Or should the Kernel come first?
ROMs usually have a kernel with them, so install the rom, then the custom kernel you want.

Rom first, Kernel second! I don't know if it matters but I have never done it the other way. I always allow a boot up first when the rom installs and then reboot into recovery again and install the kernel Good luck.

Thanks, guy!
Will do.
when you install a new kernal, is there anything you need to do or does it replace the old one and most things should just work?

Provided you installed the correct one fo your phone it should work fine. You may notice things like longer battery life, enhanced speed on mobile networks and also the ability to change the frequency of the phones processor. I use an apex kernel on my GNex and it is really good.
If you install a kernel and then a rom, your kernel will be overwritten considering roms come with kernels

[Q] kernel questions

What's the better ics kernel on dinc - I'm running paranoid? Also do you just flash those in cwr? I just came from a locked down motorola device so kernels are a bit dusty on the memory, last time I messed with any was a while back on my old fascinate.
I would suggest some incredikernels for ics.

Yep, just flash them in recovery, any good kernel package like incredikernel will already include its installer script, so it's no different than flashing any other mod. The standard warning about making a nandroid backup first applies, of course.
I agree with ra9b

oc on stock

is there a kernel that will let me overclock to around 1.5gh or 1.2 for STOCK rom CDMA? tried supersick ics and my phone will never boot and only the stock kernel works, ive tried xperia sense, xtreme sense and i think one more but wifi breaks on them. i like xperia but i need wifi, any help?
Use JMZ's kernel. The one you tried to use is for Cyanogenmod 9/MIUI ICS only.
Use this one - http://goo.im/devs/jmz/PrimoC/Kernels/ics/Jmz-PrimoC-kernel-ICS-20120820.zip
Get the boot.img from it, I'm sure you know the basics. Fastboot it, then after flash the zip
