rooting through heimdall - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Can anyone tell me if i have to root through heimdall to install cyanogen Rom so it can run smoother or can i just root through odin

You don't even need to root. You can just flash CWM in Odin, then boot into recovery and flash away.

If you don't root, then you wouldn't be able to use Titanium Backup, though ... correct?
[edit:] I believe I can answer my own question now: Most if not all ROMs have su privileges, so the phone is rooted once you've flashed.

U flash cwm through odin then u flash su through cwm and Viola you are rooted

Can I flash cwm in twrp?

I just wanna be sure bcuz the epic cm blogspot says that we can use the flash able when upgrading cwm it doesn't state that I can't flash it from another recovery.

Ive done it. Dont remember wheather or not it was successful tho. If twrp gives an error, u could always put the clockwork img on ur sdcard and do dd if=/sdcard/recoveryfilename.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 in terminal or adb
You can use Odin to flash cwm too.

Root without odin

There any .zip flashables that i can root with to root. Cant find any

In order to flash custom roms you need a custom recovery and to get one you gotta flash it via Odin...
I think you're asking for an impossible lol

Sure, it's called SuperSUv0.96CWM.zip and is only flash-able from custom recovery (CWM/TWRP).
No matter how you slice it, you WILL need ODIN at one point or the other to root these Samsung phones. You have 2 methods:
Flash custom recovery via odin, then flash supersu.zip (Up's custom counter by 1) But can be erased with triangle away
Or
Flash the full rooted stock image via Odin (Will give you root, but no custom recovery. No added count on flash counter)
Oh ok. Just got the phone and dont have my laptop for another week, so it looks like im gonna have to wait for a littlebit

Don't you have friends or family?
You don't need ODIN to install TWRP recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809313
And after you install TWRP recovery, you can root with the zip file that you can d/l from the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735561
DISCLAIMER: I'm not responsible for anything you do with your phone!!!!
From what I read from the link u need root permission to flash twrp so u have to root 1st. I dont think there is any around w/o odin. But I might be wrong

Yes, you are right. Goo Manager does need root permission. My bad.
There's no way I can think of to root without ODIN then.
Can't you use the adb method from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766552 then flash the superuser zip?
lol nvm

Cant reboot into custom recovery!

I rooted my phone by odin method . Flashing clockwork mod recovery over stock recovery . And somehow I was able to install Superuser.
But now when I try to reboot in recovery it takes me to stock recovery mode not custom recovery.
I tried both recovery and they work for a while and after some time they dont.
Why is this happening ?
Su is working fine and I m on UVLH2 .
Thanks in advance

Since you already have superuser. Why not install via Rom manager or install twrp
Recovery doesn't stick for some weird reason when flashing through Odin on that firmware

Battery pulls are unnecessary. Delete or rename these.
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Reinstall recovery with rom or goo manager and reboot recovery.

Thats weird...so you can reboot into custom recovery a few times and eventually it goes back to stock? Or can you only boot custom once then it reverts?
First, look for these files and if there, delete or rename them.
/system/recovery-from-boot.p
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Then reinstall recovery and see if it works now.
If theyre not there, good!....well maybe!
Have you tried any other method of installing recovery?
Try using my favorite tool, Mobile Odin.
Free lite version here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
(Dont forget to download the flash kernel further down the page)
Or buy full version on play store.
Download twrp here:
http://d-h.st/pNQ
Rename to recovery.img
Open Mobile Odin and tap Recovery and select that file.
Do not wipe.
Tap and confirm Flash Firmware.
Let me know how that goes.

Try rooting your phone again via Root66 that is much easier than that + its a updated version of rooting and am assuming that recently you just got your phone?
and if your gonna root it again go for the JB version the pre-rooted one.
Root66

Use this guide can't fail. Remember to unchecked reboot on Odin. Or you will never have root. Cause when it reboot it reflashes stock recovery u need to flash su before you let it reboot. So after you install cwr with Odin remove battery and boot into recovery and flash su. And ur good to go.

Rooting without Odin

Is thwre a way to bypass odin and root with a pre rooted zip file or is osin the only way?
Sent from my SM-T217S using xda app-developers app
You need Odin or Heimdall (if on Mac)to install either twrp or cwm recovery. This does not root the device. A seperate zip file that must be flashed to root and is provided in your device specific root thread.
*edit this thread its reporting success without Odin or Heimdall but it's from China so may leave behind malware http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2403230

I did such. It worked. I did however forget to turn off reboot. It rebooted. I tried to boot to recovery. How long should booting into recovery take?
