Jelly Bean Wifi Tether Sucks. Suggestions? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just as the title says. Wifi Tether has sucked since I installed Jelly Bean.
I am using the stock app as Googles Wifi tether app does not work with Jelly Bean yet.
Everyone 15-20 min the connection slows to a halt and I have to either Airplane mode the phone or reboot it totally to get a good connection again.

No issues here with the GSM model! Internet connectivity went out at a client so I leveraged the stock Wi-Fi tethering feature so I could get on the Internet. Three hours and 500MB later—400 of the 500MB was one file I downloaded—and all was still fine…

I have no problems whatsoever...
Might be a radio issue? You could try a different radio?

No problems at all stock 4.1.1 GSM.

Wireless Tether not working on rooted SGSIIE4GT running on Zedomax v3.

Took the leap 2 days ago and rooted my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch using Odin and the Zedomax v3 kernel. Root went fine and after a short minute I was rooted and installing Titanium Backup Pro, ROM Manager Pro and Wireless Tether For Root Users.
Having (free) wifi tethering is a must for me as I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (wifi version 32GB Grey) and need network access when out abroad and in the car. After installing the app from the market, I promptly opened it up and started tethering with all of the default settings (no encryption, ssid = AndroidTether, access control is disabled). The app shows that tethering is activated with no errors and broadcasting the signal. Now I switch to my SGT10.1 and open up network settings but there is no AndroidTether network seen. I refreshed multiple times and still nothing. So I grabbed a few other wifi devices (laptop, blackberry) and still, no AndroidTether network is seen.
I have checked the in-app Wireless Tether Log and there are no errors or failures. I have tried rebooting the SGSIIE4GT and still have same issues. I flashed back to stock kernel (rooted) and still have the same issues. Then removed root, rooted agin with Odin to Zedomax v3 and still same issues. Went to the distribution page for Wireless Tether and downloaded other beta and prior stable versions of the app and still same issues.
Soooo.... then I thought, maybe the hardware that broadcasts the wifi signal is busted. So I flash back to stock, unroot and go to sprint today. They activated my Sprint Hotspot service and BOOM! Pull out my SGT10.1 and the network is right there. Connect to it and it works just fine.
What is frustrating is my brother bought an SGSIIE4GT as well, we have the same hardware versions and running the same ROM and kernel and he can tether with no problems.
Not sure what could be causing the problems but hope I can get it sorted soon. Would very much appreciate any insight from anyone on new things to try. Anyone even having the same problems?

My guess it is because the Galaxy Tab doesn't support ad-hoc wifi tethering, which is what the wifi tethering app you're using broadcasts in. Had the same problem when I was trying to use it with my Touchpad. You will need a tethering app that supports infrastructure mode to be able to tether to your tablet.
Fortunately, Necrosan has been able to hack the built in Sprint Hotspot app (that uses infrastructure mode) to get free 3g tethering. That thread is here [HACK] [EG30] Hotspot Hack (3G Only for now)
You will need to be rooted and be using a deodexed EG30 rom, but there a quite a few of those around. I'm using [ACS][Odin]Stock EG30 Deodexed with Root 3.0/Busybox 1.18.4 and it is working great for me. Haven't even had LOS yet.
After you get all this done you should be able to use the Sprint Hotspot app and tether to your Galaxy Tab. Mine has been working great with my Touchpad so far. Hope this helps!
:-\
My brother (as stated above with the same hardware and software) tethers just fine to his SGT10.1 and his iMac....

To make sure its really broadcasting you should use a laptop or another computer with wifi to look for the SSID. If you see your device then the problem is probably the one stated above. If not, then there is definitely something else wrong
EDIT: just read that you already tried this. Sorry man, don't know what to tell you :/ If the Sprint Hotspot worked then I would just used the hacked version I mentioned previously to avoid paying monthly for it
Thanks for the responses, will give this a go sometime this week. Thanks for your help mate.

I've found that "Wireless Tether for Root Users" does not work for me on the ET. It acts like it is, but I can never see the SSID.
Try Barnacle Wifi Tether, it is working great for me.
Try this hopefully it works. I am getting my SGII today and this is main reason for rooting...
Does 4g work when you tether?

Barnacle did not work for 4g on my Evo so it may not work now. I believe it only handled 3g

[Issue] wifi & dun tethering is unstable

Not sure if this is carrier issue or GNex's issue...
When either wifi or Bluetooth dun tethering, connection is unstable. It would work for couple minutes (maybe 3~5), then lose connection. After couple more minutes, it reconnects again.
Anybody have this issue?

This is a really old thread, but I have the same issue on mine. I'm in Asia using the unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus, so it doesn't look like a carrier issue.
I haven't tested Bluetooth tethering extensively, but WiFi hotspot is crazy unstable. It has become a big issue for me. I connect to the hotspot on my laptop, but it stops working after a few minutes to an hour. I have to restart WiFi on my laptop and try again until I get a stable connection. I can connect to friends' iPhones with no problems, so again, it doesn't seem like a carrier issue.
I've changed both radios and ROMs, but the problem persists regardless. I'm currently on the latest AOKP (4.0.3), but I had the same issue on Android Revolution (4.0.2). Also, the issue seems to be present while tethering both through the built-in hotspot function in Settings and the WiFi Tether for Root app.
This is quite a frustrating problem. Hell, it's such a big issue for me that I'm even considering jumping back to an iPhone. Any insight or alternative hotspot app suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
same issue......always had unstable wifi tether....
Wifi tether has been stable for me on 4.0.2 stock. Bluetooth to my late 2008 MacBookPro is hit or miss though. Sometimes it'll go for hours and others it drop every 5min... regardless of signal quality.

Vicious Jelly Bean WIFI hotspot

Im having trouble getting my wifi to work on my verizon jb rom. I tried barnable and other wifi tether apps and they dont work. I then went in to setting to mobile hotspot on the phone and got it to work. however next time I went in to check mobile hotspot on it immediately disconnects and unchecks the mobile hotspot and doesnt work. Any ideas?

Can't get wireless tether to work...

I am currently running the Eclipse ROM (4.2) and know the wifi tether app doesn't work..(tried all kinda of settings) so I resorted to trying the native tethering with the same outcome... I can get my laptop to connect but it will not access the net at all... I only get "local access only" Is there a setting I am missing or is tethering not working at all with 4.2 (Eclipse specifically). I don't want to use PdaNet or anything like that..I just want it wifi hotspot (unlimited data on VZW)
My Sprint toroplus loses data and I get a crash of SecPhone every time I turn on WiFi tether.
This happens to me on any 4.2.1 ROM I try with several different kernel combos.
I need some help as well please

the wifi tether app doesnt work on 4.2, but.. the default wifi option works without any issues(phones main settings, witeless and networks, more, tethering and portable hotspot).

Thanks... But I am using the native WiFi tether settings option to turn on the hotspot. Not using any third party apps.
Settings, wireless and networks, tethering and portable hotspot, on, data disconnect on phone and toast notification the SecPhone has stopped working. I leave it on and data stays off and gives the same fc message every few minutes. I turn WiFi tether off and no more toasts about SecPhone(is a system .apk) and the data connection restores itself.
My WiFi tether and USB tether were working fine 2 days ago on BlackBean6 for toroplus. Ever since I've made the jump to 4.2.1 ROMs I get this error

it could just be the ROM/kernel that you are using. everything is working fine with rasbean jelly ROM and the trinity kernel(both 4.2.1).did you data wipe before updating or did you dirty flash?
Hmm I haven't had any issues with that on eclipse 4.2. Using the stock kernel with it.

wifi tether app jb 4.2.1

I was wondering if anyone knew of a wifi tether app that works with 4.2.1?? the built in wifi tether app does work for me all the time
Many roms have tether built in so no app needed. Not sure of any apps that work for 4.2.1

I'm on a Gnex lte with a verizon unlimited plan. I'm running CM 10.1. the rom's hotspot shows up to connect, can't connect with my laptop, can connect on the ipad but dns error and no internet. WiFi tether app, both from playstore and beta3 version doesn't seem to broadcast a signal recognizable by either my laptop or the ipad. I'm wondering if the app just isn't working right or if verizon is blocking my tethering.

I have the the same problem. And my tablet connects to my phone no problem. So just because your laptop connects, doesn't mean the Xbox will, because mine won't. The problem is specifically with the Xbox not working all of a sudden when trying to tether using native or the tether app on 4.2.1. I hope somebody can find a solution soon because I love the new OS and really don't want to revert back.
i have spent two days trying to resolve my issue with wifi tether as well. i've tried 4..2.1 aokp (w/ stock kernel) and CM10.1. with both i've tried using wifi tether with my windows 7 laptop, to no avail. i have tried using open, wpa and wpa2. wifi tether does not work for me with any 4.2 roms. i finally gave up and went back to using my aokp build 5 where native wifi tether works normally.
**I found that Bluetooth tether works, but at an obvious sacrifice of bandwidth speed. wifi tether still does not work.
I'm on AOKP 4.2.1 for Galaxy S3, i747. Same thing, no wifi tethering.
"everyone" keeps saying it will work when there is no encryption, which yes.. others can connect to the network, however, they cannot run data/speedtest.
if you download the wifi tether app for root users ( WiFi Tether for Root Users
Müller, Lemons, Buxton )
it will have troubles starting and configuring AP.
I am having the exact same problem with mmuzzy image 4.2.1 on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I did find that svtp - lite tethering app works but 14.99 for the pro version no way.

Have you guys tried "Hotspot Toggle Widget" by Fattin? I have seen reports that it still works with 4.2.1, but can't confirm it myself since I am on 4.1.1 atm.
The app does not provide hotspot functionality per se. It is a widget to toggle the built-in hotspot on and off. It bypasses the annoying carrier check if you have tether plan or not (for those of us that are still enjoying grandfathered unlimited data).
The app also does not require root.
Google Play link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fattin.togglewidget.hotspot
wifi tether (native) now works on my phone after 4.2.1 aokp build 1 and build 2 did not work. again aokp 4.2.1 mr1 build 3 has a working wifi tether.
I too have had problems with numerous roms and tether. Just today I installed AOSPA 3.0 on my toro and guess what?
NO WIFI TETHER. Everything else was awesome but I have to have tethering when I'm at home.
So, I roll back to my trusty old CM 10.1 01/02/13 nightly build that runs great and has WORKING wifi tether. Good luck.

I know this doesn't help the OP but I just have to THANK YOU for this suggestion. The " Hotspot Toggle Widget" by Fattin along with Foxfi and PDANet works wonderfully on my Verizon Gnex stock unrooted. So, I know its only 4.1.1. We'll see if we ever get 4.2, but in the meantime, this is way better than only being able to connect my Nexus 7 with Bluetooth because of the carrier check.
