Hey guys I just traded my s2 for the nexus and im loving it! Couple quick questions I was wondering I am on 4.0.2 and I wanna go to JB and theres no OTA update my phone is a unlocked GSM Nexus People are saying certain models get updated by samsung and others by google and they can be converted etc.. how do I find this out and how would I convert it?
thx everyone

Tired of writing this same response for the last 6 months so I'll give you the short version:
"takju" (from Play Store originally) and "yakju" (originally sold in the UK and W Europe) models are updated directly by Google.
All other models GSM models (yakjuxw, yakjujp, etc.) are updated by Samsung (slower).
Any GSM model can be changed from yakju** to takju. You'll remain "stock", and won't be rooted or modified in any way.
If you want to flash your phone to takju and receive OTAs from here on out, use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895

Its not confusing. Not to be rude, but if you can't follow a simple tutorial and type a few commands, you should not be modifying your phone. Don't rely on a toolkit to do the work for you. You'll be better off for knowing how to do it yourself.
BTW, you got a great deal trading an S2 for a GSM gnex.

You won't brick your phone. You have a Nexus. Just read the tutorial and follow the guides.
And if you're that worried about messing up your phone, you shouldn't be doing anything to it.

Alright im not sure if my fastboot thing installed correctly cause when I put my phone into fastboot at the bottom it says fastboot command error or something like tht
Use the toolkit provided in the developer section. It worked perfectly my nexus, it can root, unlock your bootloader, install busybox, an even install JB.
I did it! The fastboot way now I wait for the OTA update

Glad you did it. Flash the radio, bootloader and recovery too? You need to do those to make sure you receive and apply the OTA properly.

If you didn't flash the bootloader radio and recovery (ones marked "optional" in guide), the OTA won't install. Unless you actually did install them and you don't know.

Not at all, just unlock the bootloader and flash the yakju images from the link you posted before (and search next time as it's been asked)

You don't have to unlock either.. There is a post somewhere where you can download the factory image for 4.0.1 and upgrade through ota.

Hi Herman....If you know the url of that post that'd be great. I've always thought that the only way to flash images was to unlock bootloader and use fastboot/adb.
Cheers

Says here is you're not unlocked you can't update it manually:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419170
You could use ODIN to flash without being unlocked I think but you'll also lose most if not all data

As EddyOS stated earlier, if you use odin (which is what the link you referenced is suggesting), you will wipe your device anyway. There is no difference between doing it that way, or unlocking -> using fastboot -> and relocking*, except that you will get ITL41F using odin and update via OTA to ICL53F, versus getting ICL53F immediately using fastboot.
*P.S. I would highly recommend that you do NOT relock your bootloader, as it will save you many hassles in the future. (And besides, it is relockable whenever you want...)
This is really confusing. Fastboot, CMW, odin...What are these ? Is there a SUPER noob friendly post which will guide me from the veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyy start on how to place a yakju build on my GNexus ? I'm a complete noob (0% knowledge when it comes to android).
You don't need a yakju build to receive an update.. and look in the dev section for guides.

I replied to you in the other thread with instructions for you. You are getting confused because there are many ways to flash a ROM, and you are not taking the time to read up and find out which one would be the easiest for you...

Have fun. FYI it wipes your device, so save everything first.

Your device DOES receive OTA updates. It's just a matter of time. Regardless, there are two ways to update to 4.0.2: by flashing yakju 4.0.2 from the link provided above (which will wipe your device), or by updating your current build (which will not wipe). See link in my signature.

Hello everyone, I just got my hands on my new nexus and I LOVE IT!!. I'm on verizon.
I just have a few questions. I got it yesterday but I see there are new radios/bootloader?
I'm still on stock 4.04 ICS
I want to root/unlock and load up MIUI/AKOP
Can someone give me a small tutorial on how to do this? I see there's a toolkit but i'm confused on what to do because of JB dropping.

it works... but when it fails, it fails hard. and then you dont know where it failed or what it even did.
i personally will not help if you use the toolkit and things go wrong... others will still help.
It's actually very easy on this device. Since you know you are wanting to install a new ROM you don't even need to root. The hardest part is installing the ADB usb drivers and making sure they work correctly. There are basically 3 things you need to do.
1.) Install ADB and the ADB usb drivers
2.) Unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery (ClockworkMod is the most popular)
3.) Flash a new ROM
You can do steps 1-2 by following this guide up to the recovery install step. Then for step 3 download the ROM of your choice into the internal sd and boot into CWM recovery and flash.
Stupid question, can i do all of this if the phone isnt activated? My sim card should be here in the mail tomorrow

considering i read these forums and see the posts that get created, yeah i dont trust the toolkit. there are so many threads created with the title of "HELP I BRICKED MY PHONE" followed by "i used such and such toolkit"
as far as your other question, you can flash the radios and bootloaders via CWM.

hello, i am a Galaxy S3 user so this is the first time i flash a Galaxy Nexus.....bootloader is locked and the phone is not rooted, i didn't find the last 4.2 ota file for this G.Nexus model (Yakju).....i think it's not available yet so is it possible to flash a 4.2 takju on a yakju phone ????? and if the ota file is available for the yakju model how can i flash it ????? thanks a lot
Check the stickies section. I think mskip or efrant have a thread with exactly the information you need. I'm almost certain that you can change between Takju and Yakju. Make sure you read and understand everything Before you start though. I'm on mobile or I'd stick a link in here for you.

Yes. If you read the thread I linked to, you'll find that there's no need to root, as the 4.2 image will take away your root. You'll need to apply root again after the flash
