Hi,
I just received my Nexus. I got it from the middle east, it is GSM unlocked phone. The software version is
Android version: 4.0.2
Baseband version: I9250XXKK6
Kernel version: 3.0.8-gaaa2611 [email protected] #1
Build number: ICL53F.I9250JPLA1
Now to update my Nexus, do I do that through Kies or it's only through OTA? I tried connecting the phone to Kies but it just kept saying "connecting". Which version do I expect if I update at the moment 4.0.4 or 4.1 JB? I'm wondering because I'm waiting to know if Viber is compatible with JB or not? Is there a software to manage the phone that is similar to Kies? Is there an official update tool or something? I have had a few Samsung, but this is my first Nexus.
Sorry for the newbie questions, but I'm just clueless at the moment.
Thanks in advance!
Kies has nothing to do with the galaxy nexus. You should be receiving you update through an OTA (over the air) update. Just sit there calm.

There's no Kies for the Nexus. If you want to update your phone, it'll be done via an OTA (notification in status bar) or manually Fastboot flashing an OTA .zip file.
Looking at your information, your phone is likely a non-yakju device, meaning that it gets updated by Samsung instead of Google (further evidenced by your device still being on 4.0.2). Because of this, you may want to consider changing your phone to "takju", which means it'll be updated by Google directly via OTA as soon as the update is available.
If you're interested in reading up on this, theres TONS of information... this phone is quite old at this point and this has been discussed so many times. If you want to flash to takju, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
If you plan on just rooting and ROMing, then converting to takju is pointless, as you'll just wipe all of that out when flashing custom ROMs.

Hello,
So I read some different topics on the forums and decided I would "convert" my Yakjuxw Galaxy Nexus to a Yakju one. So I did that, and kinda expected a OTA notice regarding 4.0.2 and got nothing. I've been running the device as a Yakju for 4 days now, and I'm beginning to think I did something wrong while converting it.
My question is though, did I do something wrong since I haven't recieved the OTA?
And what can I do to get the latest ICS version on my Galaxy Nexus while still being able to get OTA updates directly from Google?
Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas (For those of you who celebrate Christmas)
Why don't you just install the 4.0.2 ITL41F stock image from google.

Hi,
You didn't do anything wrong if your phone still boots! What happens with these updates a lot of the time is they are rolled out in batches, say 5,000 phones at a time. Not all phones will receive the update at the exact same time, and some phones can even go weeks before receiving the update while some phones may already have it. If your phone still boots, you haven't done anything wrong Just a matter of waiting. Or you can install a custom ROM which most of those are already on 4.0.3. This way you can always be on the bleeding edge
Best bet is if you don't mind backing up all your stuff is to simply flash 4.0.2 directly from the link provided by nabiladeeb
Also if you really want to make sure everything is ok do *#*#checkin#*#* from the dialler and download the GN update checker from the market and that will tell you if you are on the stock google build
Stopped rolling out 4.0.2?
I switched my phone from Yakjuxw to Yakju yesterday. I know the 4.0.2 updated rolled out a few days ago. Does anyone know if it's too late to get the OTA update without manually doing it? Anyone get the OTA 4.0.2 after changing in the last couple of days? Want to avoid erasing everything again by unlocking the bootloader...
Hey guys, great forum! Grateful for all the support we have here. I have a question that I hop can be answered it has to do with updates for the GNex.
So basically, I bought the Nexus with Rogers in Canada and its a great device. I went to go and check the version and it was still on 4.0.1. I rooted it and then unrooted for personal reasons, the unroot brought me to 4.0.2 because thats the file that the unrooting program had, the phone is completely stock, bootloader locked.
After this, I heard about Yakju and Yakjuux and that Yakju gets updates from Google while Yakjuux gets them from Samsung. So I proceeded to check which one mine was, I used an app called GN Official Update and it told me I am Yakju.
So why am I not getting any updates past 4.0.2? Is it because the unroot process brought me to 4.0.2? Is it because those updates have been pulled for now? I dont think me being with rogers would have an effect but if it does please tell me!
If it helps: Baseband is I9250
Kernel is stock 3.0.0-gaaa2611
[email protected]#1 and the
build is ICL53F
Thanks for any help guys!
4.0.2 is the current official update out now.

You aren't receiving any more OTA updates because there haven't been any
Oh ok, so one more question, then how come when I was on 4.0.1 I never got an update? is that because when i rooted/unlocked bootloader and unrooted thus bringing me to 4.0.2 it somehow brought me to Jakju? I dont get it!
If you're relying on OTAs, 4.0.2 is the latest available.

How long did you have the phone before you rooted it to 4.0.2? Also, it's very possible when you flashed 4.0.2 you switched to yakju I believe. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Normally when there is a new OTA update, you can find it posted here before it rolls out to your phone.

Just to clear something up, I rooted while on 4.0.1. I unrooted and the file that was there for unrooting was 4.0.2 (wugfresh's tookit). So It WAS possible that when that file was flashed to go back to stock, It changed the updates from Yakjuux(Samsung) to Jakju(GOOGLE) ?

To my knowledge, yes that's right. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.

A few points:
1) No one knows for sure who updates any of the non-yakju builds, whether yakjuux, or whatever else. And if anyone (including that app you were referring to that you used, which is not "official" by the way) tells you otherwise they are just speculating. All we know is that OTA updates for ALL builds come from Google's servers.
2) Rooting has NO impact whatsoever on you receiving or not receiving the OTA update.
3) The reason you went from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2 is because you were running yakjuux 4.0.1 (which ONLY RECENTLY received the OTA update to 4.0.2, and not all yakjuux devices have been updated yet), and when you "unrooted", you didn't really "unroot" your yakjuux 4.0.1 build. That toolkit just flashed the yakju version of 4.0.2 over your yakjuux 4.0.1 build.
4) It is yakju, not jukju
5) This thread should have been posted in the Q&A subforum, not General.
6) The latest official build for yakju is ICL53F (4.0.2). 4.0.3 is available via AOSP.

Taken straight from Google's website "
Galaxy Nexus is supported only in GSM/HSPA+ configuration "maguro" and only if it was originally sold with a "yakju" operating system."

Don't confuse OTA updates with AOSP support.
I just purchased an unlocked Galaxy Nexus from new egg.com. The phone is from Japan and is branded with a NTT-Docomo logo and is only running ICS 4.0.1. I tried checking for an ota update and nothing happens when I clicj in system update.
How can I update the phone to the latest version of ICS?
The product name of the device is "yakjuxe". Thanks in advance.

Should work. Worked for me.
You may not want to flash to the new radio though. Apparently the Docomo uses their own radios. The google radio will work, but some say the Docomo radio is actually better.

Great! This worked. Phone is now running 4.0.4.
Got all of my apps back and ready to go. I have noticed some minor differences from the previous build, but nothing significant.
Will I now be able to receive OTA updates directly from Google?
Thanks!
Simply put id like to know if anyone in the UAE has gotten JB for their Galaxy Nexus. I woke up today with an update alert, and after applying it, it turned out to be 4.0.4 and not JB. Any hints on how to get it sooner?
If you're takju or yakju you should have it by now.
The reason why you don't have it doesn't necessarily depend on your location, it depends on what version of the firmware your phone has. I'm assuming if you bought that locally it's a non-yakju/takju variant. If you don't mind wiping your phone once to switch over, you can go to takju and receive OTAs quickly directly from Google from here on out. You'll remain "stock", you'll just be switching from one firmware version to the other.
Follow this guide to do so if you're interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
Thnx a lot
I'm also based here in Dubai and I bought my Galaxy Nexus from souq.com. It came with ICS 4.0.2 yakjujp (middle east) firmware variant so I manually flashed it with the ICS 4.0.4 "yakju" firmware to get updates directly from Google. I got the JB notification last week and upgraded over WIFI without problems. Here's the link to the guide in case you're interested -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
hey guys..
so just bought a galaxy nexus off craglist.. When i turn the phone, i see the padlock meaning the bootloader is unlocked. I am on 4.0.2. and would like to get the official OTA of jelly bean. I am not sure if the phone is rooted. there is no superuser or rom manager such apps in the phone. Does that mean, the phone's bootloader is only unlocked.
basically How do i go about getting the official OTA? Thanks!
If its on 4.0.2 and you're not being prompted for any OTAs (there's been 2x 4.0.4 updates and a 4.1.1 update), then you're probably on a firmware version that is updated by Samsung (yakjuxw, yakjujp, yakjuux, etc.), rather than Google (yakju, takju). These versions are a couple OTA versions behind the Google versions.
To switch to a version updated by Google, you need to wipe the entire device and install a "takju" version of the firmware. If you're interested, read up in this guide and follow along: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895 You can skip the part where you unlock the bootloader because you're already unlocked. When you're done, you phone will be 100% stock, not rooted or ROMed, you'll just be on a stock Google image.

is there any way to know for sure that I am on the samsung version? or the fact i don't have any OTA is sufficient to assume im on samsung version.
Alright everything is sorted out.. followed the guide link posted by martonikaj... updated to JB 4.1.1 now.. thanks a lot.
