Constant Notification E-Mails - About xda-developers.com

I'm fairly sure it used to be, once I left the site I would get one e-mail if a thread was replied to that I was subscribed to, until I came back to the site. Now I seem to get mutiple e-mail. Over night I deleted 4 e-mails from the same thread, I've not been on XDA since yesterday afternoon.
Is anyone else getting this? Could it be Tapatalk on my phone giving the site the impression I'm always on it?

As far as I know it doesn't take into account when you've last seen the post - it will send the email instantly on reply, daily, weekly or not at all; depending on your choice.

Hmm, kind of annoying then. Not how mist forums work and I'm fairly sure its not how this one used to work either

Sounds like you subscribed to a thread and asked to be sent notifications when others posted/replied. If you don't want them anymore, just go to your User CP and unsubscribe from the thread.

But I do want to know when there's a new post. If I've not been to the forum though, I do t need go know there's another new post, and another, and another...
Most send you one email, then no more until you've visited the site again. So everyone gets and email every time there's a post in a subscribed thread? What a massive waste of emails...

This is done to make sure you always keep up on Development. Remember this is not most sites. This is a Development site and one missed post could mean the diff between fixing a java code issue or not. This has always been the way it works. Keeping up on threads is a huge thing for alot of people.

Okay, I can see a point for devs having that option, it seems odd to force it on everyone though as it will stop users from following development

Yours is the first complaint I've seen about it, so maybe it doesn't bother most people?

Maybe it doesn't. I've not bothered saying anything for a month or two, there may be others who have just not bothered to say anything
This and I think maybe Rootzwiki are the only two forums from many that do it this way, Seems odd not to have an option to do it the 'normal' way is all I'm saying.

So, this constant email notification is actually a 'feature' on XDA as per these admins. Or has this been reconsidered as POV of a general user who doesn't want his phone beeping every minute in the office?

says i have a text message but i don't

im sure this has proably been asked before. but i have the HTC Tilt 2 from AT&T and says i have a new message when i dont. i have tried deleting all the messages in my sent, deleted, inbox, and drafts but touch flow still says there is one at the bottom. i also dont have a notice for one. how do i fix this?
I have a touch pro 2 and I have the same issue. I tried calling HTC and they said to shut the phone, have someone text me an amount of times equal to what the number of text messages it says I have is, then wait 5 minutes and turn the phone on. That didn't work. I need to get around to waiting on hold 15 minutes to ask them again. :/
ive had this issue before and there is a fix for it...
1) unzip the attached file to your storage card
2) run the exe file
3) restart your phone
let me know if you guys need more help, but that should do it. it always works for me.
Worked. Thanks. Now to figure out why Visual Voicemail isn't working and how to fix that 1 hour 2 minute thing on the clock.
This sms issue has been discussed in at least 50 different threads on here. There is no way you guys used the search feature to solve your issue. The last thing this forum needed was YET another thread about this
If you don't know how to use the search feature (which if you look at the top of nearly EVERY page here on XDA you'll see the "search box" so I really don't know how you couldn't) that's built into the forums, in google do something like search "sms count problem XDA" and I bet you'll come up with threads that have the fix in it...
common sense goes a long way.
Regardless... glad you found your solution
If you want to turn this thread into condescending posts, I can post screenshots of Firefox's history from the last 2 days using the search feature for a handful of other things. Convenience goes a long way. Searching isn't the most simple thing. Things have to be worded correctly, versions have to match.
thanks puff601 the programs worked like a charm. and Aaron yesterday before i made this thread i did use the search function and i got so many pages that it would take me hours to look through. i looked through the first ten and found nothing pertaining to my issue.

Not meaning to be condisending at all... the reality is like I said.. searching isn't hard, might take you a bit but compared to what? Making a post and then waiting for someone to search for you and post the fix that's been discussed a million times? How dare users on here call people out on that!!!!
If you do a search, even just in this sub forum you'll probably find 20 threads started by people who have less then 10 posts asking about the exact same thing... The other day I looked and at the top of the post's there were 2 threads about this... this one and another one right under it. Come on! Just for kicks I punched in what I recommened above by searching in google the "sms count problem XDA" and low and behold the third link down was a link to a touch pro 2 sms problem... the first link showed what you had to look for, the "fixunreadcount" program, as did the 3rd link. Now, am I claiming to be a genious because when I had this issue way way back I did just that and came up with the answer almost right away? No, but the fact is I looked and found it.. Luck? Maybe... but before I post anything I look and look... or if anything say I loaded on a custom rom and had the issue I would post in that thread asking if anyone had the same issue. I'm sure someone would ring in!
Google Result for sms count problem XDA
You're right.. searching isn't the most convenient thing... Especially when you don't know how to search properly I'm sure that can be a real pain in the butt.
Regardless you got your fix one way or another and that's all that matters as I'm sure it annoyed you beyond belief... maybe this post will stay at the top of the charts for a while so other people who have the issue can find it right away and not have to use the search feature...
better yet a mod should just start a new sticky thread with fixes and known issues with the phones..... Update it every few weeks and it would make the forum a lot cleaner place.

You just don't get it. There's a difference between human interaction and the strict wording requirements of the search function. You seem to be so dead set on proving why a certain method works so well that you fail to understand the human interaction aspect of a forum.

3 gripes/bugs with new ATT Tilt 2 ROM, tweaks?, any other gripes??

Three things ive noticed since updating to the new Tilt 2 official Rom. Every time the device starts up, the "Backlight and Power" SETTINGS screen loads, as i said, every time the device starts up. Its pointless, undesired, annoying, and has done that from the start.
*(2) On the SMS tab of the new "HTC SENSE" (newer version of touchflo pretty much) whenever you get a new SMS and go over to the SMS tab, the newest message isnt ever at the top of the list (waiting for you right in front of your face) on the previous official ROM the newest SMS was always placed/focused right at top of the list for you to see instantly. Not the case with this new ROM, you have to scroll through your old messages, to the very top to read the new SMS, instead of it being right there.
*(3) Why the heck did they get rid of the task manager in the upper right corner next to the clock? Are you kidding? That was just too easy to terminate programs, and switch focus to them if youd like. They got rid of it!? Ridiculous.
Tweaks of any kind are welcome and appreciated, im sure by a few people. I am an advanced user so i would understand. If anyone else thinks of gripes with the new ROM please post here!

Try this. i have not tried it yet so i cant tell you if it works but people have said it works on tp2 w/ sense!
Thank you, i will definitely check that out. i appreciate the helpful input, instead of being told where and how to post like a lot of other people seem to like to do. I sincerely appreciate your time and efforts. Looks like a good suggestion by just checking out the screenshots.
There's already several threads going regarding this ROM in the ROM Development forum (where this belonged and has been moved to). Had you taken a moment to look you could have found them and posted your drivel in one of them instead of having yet another thread on the same subject scattered around the forums. Your Task Manager gripe is among the most well-known and easiest to fix as a cab is posted in those other threads for it. Forums have certain etiquette that members are expected to abide by and not searching and starting superfluous threads will make others call you out on it. I was not rude to you in any way.

ok, i might get some heat for this but i am prepared. this has nothing at all to do with smartphones, but i dont know of anybody else with the amount of computer working knowledge as you guys here at the xda, so i turn to you with my problem.
i was tying up a questionnaire on the web. it was taking a while, and i was tired, so i went to bed. in the morning, i finished it, but the website had logged me out, so i couldn't submit it. this is worth a big chunk of my grade, and needs to be done tomorrow.
so my question, does anybody know a way to copy multiple text boxes and paste them into an identical web page?
mods, if there is a problem with me posting an unrelated (yet necessary) question, please delete.
all i need is one person who knows the answer. anybody?????

Cant you just copy each text box one by one? Why do you need to copy them all at once?
Maybe I don't fully understand your question here but can't you just copy everything, paste it all into a document, sign back in to the website, and then copy it all from the doc and paste it into the website and submit it?
sitlet: because there are 400 text boxes. that is my last resort.
metal: i tried copying everything, but somehow, it doesnt even copy the text.
thank you both for replying. i honestly didnt think people would like me posting something so random...
What about opening up a new tab, signing in, and then going back to your first tab and submitting your stuff? I don't want you to lose all your hard work but it seems to me like that might work.
If anybody gets pissed off for you asking this, then they have a stick up their ass. You help out enough people here, I think it's more than acceptable for you to ask a question every now and again, regardless if it's on topic or not.
thank god for autocomplete! instead of copying 400 text boxes, i only need to copy 40, and google chrome autocompletes the rest. thanks for all your help. thread is sort of closed notw.

MetalHead: interesting and innovative solution, nice suggestion. I bet it would work.
OP: Forum members get annoyed when people arrogantly ask questions, demand answers, don't even attempt to perform a simple google search, and disregard the fact that a given question is off-topic. Your 'humble' approach invites others to help, especially as we have all been in a similar situation in the past.

Ok, so thank you all for the help. Thankfully, google chrome auto completed about 80 percent of my work. I typed the questions and it remembered the answers. That was a recommendation. I love chrome. Eiter way, I got it all done, so i oficially call this thread closed.
Thread said not to look so I thought I would check it out. I've been meaning to try out chrome but I figure google already gets enough information from me. Having their web browser is just one step closer to them knowing absolutely everything I do lol

Text messaging problem choosing the wrong person... anyone else?

When I go into my main texting screen, and choose a name from all my saved texts at the time, it will sometimes randomly open up a different person than the one I clicked on. I have sometimes sent the wrong text to the wrong person because of this. It does it maybe 1 in 20 times. Does anyone else have this issue. Phone specs in my sig, and also did it without custom kernel and on fresh 3.4.0.1
Sounds like you are experiencing the infamous "Android SMS Bug".

Seriously, not to sound like a troll but why does NO ONE SEARCH before posting anymore?
I'm about to unsubscribe from the RSS feeds because I get about 17 new "How do I Root?" threads every day in addition to a few "DAE have this problem that everyone has?" threads.

It's never a smart thing to subscribe to RSS feeds especially when it comes to support forums. I used to do it but got so many emails daily. Give the guy some slack though. He probably didn't know it was a bug and therefore didn't search because of it.
Yeah sorry guys. I thought it might be a rare case. Off to yahoo for me..
And it's not that it sends it to the wrong person... it just loads up the wrong conversation when touching a name and I have to double check. When hitting send, it still sends to that person thats currently on the conversation screen. Only does it with people who I've already listed in the main text screen showing all the people

I disagree:
RSS feeds are always preferred over revisiting the page. You reduce load on the server by not streaming all the content back and forth until there is a discussion you want to dive into. I'm not sure what you use for RSS if it's sending you emails but switch over to Google Reader.
I understand he didn't know it was a bug... my point was why not search for it first. The very first thing I do when I encounter something like this is "google it". That either takes me to pages where others are discussing the same issue... or proves that no one else knew about it.
A forum isn't meant to be a never ending jetstream of new threads. Look at the developer forums, they have a single thread per ROM/App/etc. and update it with discoveries and new software versions. The thread becomes the SOLE SOURCE for information on that topic... making it easy to find what you are looking for.

Nope, Fresh 3.5.0.1. Did it with fresh 3.4 also and stock kernel. But I just looked it up on yahoo and seen lots of pages talking about it.
Here is the official Android Defect. Google has already fixed the issue and will publish it in a future release (see comment 1460):

Exactly what mine does once in a while. Unlike the "google sms bug" where the sms sends to the wrong person, mine sends to the right person, but just selects the wrong person's thread once in a while. I have almost sent some "naughty" texts to my mom and boss before I looked who I was sending them too lol.

Never a good idea to have your bosses number saved in your address book if you're going to possibly.....
I'd memorize it. Anyway it happens to me so often that I always clear my inbox after each message that I send someone.

I guess the big question is "Is there a real fix for this"? If not, then we know we can't use that feature with this phones reliably. I see this happening a lot but I don't hear of anyone working on it? Since this is open source code, I think this could be fixed. For now my question is a possible work around that we know work 100% all the time?
What are you guys doing to ensure the message to your girlfriend/wife doesn't go to your kids?

Something should be done about it, because it's getting out of hand.
1) It makes quoting posts frustrating. It actually punishes us, because we need to manually remove the crap, which is ironically MUCH more difficult on mobile webbrowsers, than PC.
2) It makes posts more difficult to read. Most of them add a few blank lines and itself, making less fit on a screen without scrolling
3) It's totally unnecessary.
4) It is spam by the apps themselves.
5) Users who need an XDA app, can just type "XDA" into their app stores. So it can't even be argued that it is difficult to find such apps otherwise.
My Proposal:
1) Automatically filter the comment out of posts. They are lame, and unneccessary. Get rid of them automatically (simple string substitution).
2) Give a 3 month warning that users utilising clients which post such garbage, will be given 3 warnings, and will be temp banned if they use them. It is fair.
3) Start a shame list of poorly designed XDA clients.
I agree it isn't the end of the world, but its a lot of wasted productivity, and it's unnecessary. It's bad enough that I have noticed that some people here have massively long/intrusive signatures. Some of those people also have these annoying tags, so they have 3x more "crap", than they do actual post.
I agree with this, but it's up to the admins, will flag this to them.

It's been flagged!
The thing with the signature is that it serves the same purpose as the default signature of your mobile phone in the email client (for example: "Sent from my Verizon Droid X"). It helps to inform people that your message was written while mobile, and so the text might contain errors, or might not be as well thought out as it would have been if you were in front of your computer. The signature is activated by default on our Android apps (and, actually our Windows Phone 7 app).
That said, if there is huge support for turning off the default signature in the application, we'll do it, but this is the first time we're hearing about it being a problem. As mentioned, it serves a practical purpose.
Thanks for the feedback.

Huh? I agree it's useful ... more so than not, at least, as an identifier and a screaming 'hello I'm on my mobile so if this doesn't make sense you know why' kinda thing. I don't see how this is a big deal ... at all. LOL ... ? I also fail to see how it gets in the way of anything, like quoting especially, as it is essentially another single line that still precedes the quote tags.

It's useful IMHO and I am not aware of any issues in including the signature in quotes- it's a single line... who cares? I imagine someone quoted an entire, incredibly long OP, to say "thanks"...
I don't know if it is possible, but how about making the signature from the tapatalk app's just smaller than average text? That way, people can still be informed it was written while mobile, and it would be less obtrusive for the ones who don't like it.... And I'm sorry, I know my normal signature is long

You have to post one way or another - we don't need to know how or what you used to post. It is getting easier to post so more people are posting. Teens are no longer getting flip phones and now populating this forum with more and more silly questions looking for answers you can easily find using google. People have the EVO 4g and think they can post anything they want in the EVO General forum because you have an evo and you are posting in the general section. I want to see general information about the EVO and not other phones on other networks and other random things you find interesting. There are other forums for that.
We all have to start somewhere I know that and when I joined in 2006 the first 4 years I probably posted 100 times and now I am posting like crazy trying to help these people find answers hoping people learn something. People are here 1-2 years with over 1,000 posts.
Yeah, it helps to know that is was posted on a phone but with keyboards and big screens take a couple extra seconds to make sure everything is typed right. I do it why can't other people.
But what if you could have the benefits of knowing which client it was posted with, without having that crap in posts too? Surely that would be better, correct?

No, please, don't turn off signatures in the app. Can't they be stripped, however, the way they're stripped when quoting and responding on the desktop app? I agree, they're difficult to remove if you're responding on the app, but as you said, they're useful to indicate the poster is swyping, or whatever may account for little errors in their post.
