Possibly Bricked (Will not boot to HBoot or Recovery) - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A while back, my brother's incredible randomly stopped working, he blamed me for rooting and s-offing it, and moved on to the iphone world.
Today, I decided to give fixing it a go, and I think I have made it worse...
Before, I couldn't boot into recovery or the system, but fastboot and hboot were working fine.
Then, I decided to try this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1031752).
It finished successfully, and the incredible rebooted to the white incredible screen.
Then, it goes into the software update screen for a second or two and finally bootloops all over again.

None of the links in that thread work so im not sure ecactly what you did. I assume it had you flash the eng hboot, fastboot flash some partition img's, and then reflash .92 hboot and do an ruu? If you cant boot, or enter hboot, the phone is bricked.

It's live on the last page (which you seemed to have downloaded too haha) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23011865&postcount=22
As far as I can tell that's what it did. Would a ruu really cause a brick?
Thanks

Yeah thats just the eng hboot i downloaded, no instructions though on what exactly they had you flash. Doing an ruu could possibly brick the phone. A phone usually gets bricked with a bad radio flash, ruus flash a radio, so sometimes things can go wrong. Or it also flashes an hboot so something may have gone wrong there and now there is no working hboot. It may have been some sort of incompatibility between the img's you flashed and the img's in an ruu. What img's did you flash (misc, boot, recovery?), also what ruu did you flash froyo or gb?

I flashed clockwork 5.0.2.0 and the misc you recommended here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25522827&postcount=31)
I ran the RUU that was included in the zip. I'm not sure what version it was but i think it gave me the 0.92 hboot, if that means anything.
Does the RUU not flash everything?
Thanks, just trying to understand what went wrong, guessing the final verdict that it's bricked

Yes the ruu should reflash all partitions. I thought mabey you used the wrong ruu to match the mtd0.img, but if you used the one from that thread it was the correct one.
Yeah if you cant run an ruu, get into hboot, recovery, or boot, then im sad to say the phone is a brick.

Mabey since the phone cant boot to the os or hboot, it auto boots to recovery and tries to load an image. Try renaming an ruu to update.zip instead of PB31IMG.zip, place it on the sd card in no folders and see if the phone will try to use it.
Are you able to get adb to work from the splash screen?

Hey I'm just wondering if you checked the MD5 sum of you downloaded RUU?
That sucks the worse part is you lost your brother to iDrone.
Could be a hardware failure probably no way to ever know.

[Q] How exactly do I reroot with S=Off?

Ok so i had root and custom rom and all that, then i decided to switch back to the stock with the latest RUU, i already had S off before i did this and i hear you can get clockwork back on again if its off, but uhhhh im a complete newcomer almost when it comes to rooting so how exactly do i do that?
If you follow the directions here, you'll have clockworkmod recovery back: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788306
(I linked to this one because it works on both AMOLED and SLCD screens )
Edit: Flashing via HBOOT is as simple as holding Vol Down while your phone starts up and selecting yes when it asks you if you want to flash PB31IMG.zip (the file you just copied over).
S-off allows your phone to flash any PB31IMG file, while S-on phones check for a signature from HTC. Because of this, I recommend a healthy dose of caution when flashing PB31IMG files, as flashing malicious or corrupt one could spell trouble.

Yes to both, but you'll want to make sure that the file is meant to be flashed from HBOOT before doing so - I'm a bit cloudy beyond this, but try to research for the difference between files that are meant to be flashed in HBOOT and ones that are meant to be flashed in recovery.

[Q] Original stock rom update.zip file

Hey I need some help. I have been trying to reformat my phone with the original stock ROM but I cannot get the RUU to work. Every time that I try to use the RUU executable file to reinstall the original ROM it can't detect my phone. I really need help with this my phone is incapacitated right now. If someone could help me find a rom that I could use here that would be fantastic. Thanks
what happened that your phone is not working? are you rooted, s-off? what rom where u on b4?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
It is S-Off and I am not sure if it is still rooted. I have been switching back and forth from the cyanogen mod and the stock rom, and I tried doing a system restore on the stock rom and it didn't really change anything but I don't think it can do root things anymore. It has been asking me to do a system update but every time I try to install it it fails.

Your failed update is probably due to your still having a modified recovery.
Something that could work for you:
>run the .exe for the RUU, then minimize it.
>start/run/type "%temp%" in the dialog box.
>search the output for rom.zip
>move the rom.zip to your sdcard and run it from hboot.
this should go through the rom installation and restore your rom. it's worked a couple times for me when I messed up recoveries.
Good luck!
BTW do you have HTC sync installed on your computer? not having that might be missing the driver for your phone.....just a thought
I tried extracting rom.zip out of the temp directory but the file was corrupted. Maybe the RUU doesn't work at all? I don't know. If you can get me a rom.zip that isn't corrupted that would be fantastic. Thanks!

Make sure SD card is formatted to fat32. Rename it so it is PB31IMG.zip(If on Windows and have fileextensions turned off rename it PB31IMG. The .zip will already be added.)
Put on root of SD card meaning not in any folders and boot into hboot. The phone will ask you to update, select yes and wait for it to ask you if you want to reboot.

To get s-on you need to have CW recovery. Wish you would have mentioned this before. You need to flash clockwork recovery again then apply the s-on. Then re run the previous PB31IMG.
Wow this is so freaking nuts. Ok so I tried running the S-ON .zip file that they provide using CW Recovery. Problem is now unrEVOked forever doesn't support my radio, radio-1.00.00.02.09. I will try to contact them unless you all have another idea. Thanks for your help so far!
If your still s-off you can flash a supported radio through Hboot much like the get back to stock PB31IMG you just ran. But if you ran the one I provided earlier you should be on a .92 hboot and a 2.15.00.07.28 radio, which is supported for s-on.
Here, download one of the ones that S-ON if compatible with and put it on the root of your sd card, and boot into hboot. Be sure its called PB31IMG.zip, or else it won't work.

Ok so I tried updating to a radio compatible with the unrEVOked S-ON update. When I try to run the file the recovery screen blacks out and then goes back to the main menu. It doesn't give me any output as to why that happened or if it even did anything.
You should flash RUUs from within HBOOT, not Recovery. An RUU includes everything from radio, to ROM, to recovery.
You can still do this with S-ON, since it is signed.
I'm not on the RUU I know how to install that. I need to use the S-ON .zip file that i got from unrevoked.com

You don't flash radios in recovery you flash radios in HBOOT. Make sure you rename the file to the proper filename then it should automatically detect it and install it.
Again like I said before, if you simply install the RUU from within HBOOT that would revert everything back to stock including the radio. Then you could run S-ON from within the stock recovery. But if you want to do it the other way so that you run the S-ON patch from within ClockWork that's fine too.
Haha well i have not explained things properly so let me explain where I am at right now very clearly.
Right now I have HBOOT updated using an RUU with a radio that unrEVOked forever works with. I have rooted and installed Clockwork Recovery. Now, I go to install the S-ON using Clockwork and then the screen blacks out and it returns to the Clockwork main menu without giving me any output.
Hopefully that clears things up
Ok sorry I thought you had trouble flashing the radio.
Yes I do believe the S-ON patch is installed within recovery, I just did it a few days ago and it worked fine. I was using the 7.28 radio. I believe I just did a normal .zip install in clockwork.
This sounds stupid, but make sure you're not pushing the power button. In ClockWork you have to push the optical pad to make selections, it's unlike HBOOT. I can't think of anything else.

Stuck at White HTC Boot Screen, Can't get to Recovery

Hey,
I was trying to load up the new radios and when I did it my phone kept losing connections to 3G and everything so I tried to update hboot to the latest and now I can't get past the HTC EVO 4G White Screen. I can still access Hboot but I can't get to recovery.
I was loading the radios from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
I tried to install the PC36IMG from RA-supersonic 2.3 but its not giving me the instruction to install it. It reads the PC36IMG.zip in Hboot but I don't get an option asking do I want to install it.
I got the file from here

Is there a way for me to get to recovery? My phone won't boot past the screen, I assume if I can get back to recovery I can wipe it and use a different ROM. Thanks

Are you still showing S-OFF? When you flash your hboot you also have to flash a new kernel in order for it to boot, the recovery on the other hand should still work regardless.

Running the latest RUU should get your phone up and running again. Then just use revolutionary again and you should be S-OFF again. Also be sure to permanently set S-OFF with unrevoked forever before flashing a new hboot.

I downloaded the file and changed the name to PC36IMG.zip. You can't flash that zip, because your HBOOT is a newer version than the one which you're trying to flash. Red triangle, is the recovery, stock recovery. If you push vol up + power, you'll see android recovery system. Try running an RUU of the stock ROM you want.

Only way of doing that is from within an operational phone, Android environment. Or via custom recovery. Since yours isn't booting. Boot your bootloader, choose fastboot and flash a custom recovery via cmd prompt. From within the recovery you can mount the phone, turning the SD card in your phone into a flash drive on your computer.

A RUU is an executable file that runs on your computer environment which will push the ROM to your phone via sync cable. RUU= ROM update/upgrade utility.
Must you have S-On, to switch carriers, or do you just need the stock ROM on your phone?

I didn't see that you had clockworkmod as your recovery before. That's probably why it didn't work. I agree with the above; I'd just flash a stock rooted ROM. Just download the PC36IMG.zip for RA-supersonic v2.3 and put it on the root of your sd card (you can take it out of the device and connect it to a computer using a card reader) to flash in bootloader.
My phones touch screen is acting up..and i think it was the rom.
Fastboot > RUU > PC36IMG (hboot 2.16.00001 S-ON) > RUU. Best way in my opinion.

However, I flashed the downgrader and forgot to flash the Stock HBOOT. I flashed the RUU and now my phone is S-ON and stuck on the wrong HBOOT and thus cannot flash the system partition. Is there anyway I can recover the phone? It is stuck on the HTC screen with 4 triangles on either side. I can access fastboot but can't do anything in there.
Any help would be appreciated.

What was the last HBOOT you flashed, do you have a carrier branded device?

I flashed the Alpharev downgrader then I used the RUU utility to flash and that messed up the whole phone. No, this is not a carrier branded devices
EDIT: The specific order was bravo_downgrader.img > then RUU > nuclear meltdown

Follow THIS guide and I'm sure you should be able to restore your device to a working state.
What version of the RUU did you try to flash, Froyo or GB?

I shall try to follow the guide and see if it helps.
The file I used was title "RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed"
So it was the Froyo version
EDIT: I also was on the CM7 r2 hboot and that is the reason my phone cannot complete the process by the way. Forgot to mention that

Is there a way I can get a signed HBOOT from one of the stock ROMs or RUUs and try flashing that as I don't have access to a memory card reader right now?

If you flashed the AlphaRev downgrader HBOOT then the process to unroot using the PB99IMG.zip will restore your device to a working condition and S-ON. I have used this method to unroot many times, the HBOOT contained in the PB99IMG.zip will overwrite the AlphaRev downgrader HBOOT.
The last brick I recovered from was flashing a NEXUS ONE custom HBOOT to my Desire and even after that I was able to revive it.

Thing is, now I am S-ON because of the RUU, will that affect it in any way?
Sorry for all the questions. Just freaking out a little bit

Nah bro, the PB99IMG.zip will over-write everything and restore your device to a factory state.
How far have you got with the process?

Trying to get a memory card reader to make a gold card. Don't have access to one yet. Is it ok if I PM you once I try the process out if I have any questions?
Would appreciate it. Will try to do as much as I can on my own though so I won't bother you with stupid question

Don't loose your time, just download 2.3 RUU from htcdev.com and no goldcard needed.

An awesome forum member messaged me last night and told me the same thing. I thought why not give it a shot and it worked brilliantly. Thanks goes out to jmcclue, nlooooo, and 3f1f37 for all your help
If anyone is facing the same issue as I did. Just flash the 2.3.3 RUU and it should fix it right away. Now on to downgrading to Froyo
