I was wondering if anyone out there has experience with dropping devices wearing TPU cases.
I recently got a diztronic one and love the low profile but am a little doubtful it will protect my screen from shattering. I've done some searching and it doesn't seem like there's much info on this subject. Unfortunately most if not all TPU case reviews don't discuss how effective the case is against drops and whatnot, so here I am.
Anyone have any experience with dropping phones with TPU cases? Did it protect your phone? Did the screen still shatter?

I would think TPU cases can provide some pretty decent shock protection. The material should cushion the fall and prevent any damage to the display.

Holy mackerel! If you're too lazy to watch the video:
20F freezer test: fine (she mentions it's a little slow, but I can't tell)
190F heat test: perfectly fine
3 drops from about 5 feet: perfectly fine
Key scratch test: very light scratches
Water immersion: 15-second full immersion in a fish tank, 4 days of drying with no battery, perfectly fine!
Wow. What a capable phone...you go, Samsung!
Some more detailed testing (WiFi? MicroSD slot? Cell phone reception?) would've been useful, but, at the very least, the screen and digitizer are pretty strong.

My twelve year old daughter had one on her Epic 4G Touch for the past 6 months. She dropped her phone several times a day and it is still in perfect working condition. All 3 of us just switched to the GS3 and we all have a TPU case now. I guess thats how confident I am in them.

I'm thinking the same. I just wish there were more personal accounts like "my TPU case phone fell almost 12 feet and survived" but there just aren't any.

Thank you for this testimony. This is exactly what I'm looking for.
I did drop mine from about waist height onto a hardwood floor earlier tonight and there was no damage to the phone whatsoever. I'm hoping it would survive higher and harsher drops as well.

I have a Cruzerlite, and I dropped it in the parking lot at work from between 3-4' high. It landed on the bottom corner (slight asphalt transfer as evidence), bounced a little, and ended up screen-side down. I was terrified as I picked it up to look at the screen. It was fine! Rubbed off the marks on the outside of the case and all was back to normal.

Asphalt surface is a true, realistic test. Glad Cruzerlite protects it cuz I doubt that Ms. Molly Wood's phone would pass the asphalt drop test naked.

That and her drops were always on the side. A face-down drop will shatter it.
And that brings me to my next point that our TPU cases can't really protect against: an uneven surface from a face-down fall. The casing does absorb shock to the front a good amount but if it falls face down where there's a rock or something that rises off the ground the case can do nothing to prevent disaster. This probably applies to every case though. Good news is this type of fall may not produce the force required to shatter the screen.
Oh well. I'll still feel safe with this tpu case but not bulletproof.

What case can protect from a face down shot on an uneven surface? Perhaps one of the ones with a cover but that's assuming its closed when you fumble it.

Right, and I did acknowledge that in my previous post. I think that unless you go to some sort of extreme for protection there are simply some circumstances that you can't do anything about. In short, don't drop your phone!

So I've had my Gnex for about 2 weeks now, was in a commuter case the whole time. Today, I drop it on the pavement, no sharp objects or rocks protruding out. It dropped from my hand, about waist level, and went forward about a metre or two. And guess what, the screen is completely cracked! cracks running from the bottom to the sides, to the top, a small chunk of screen missing right above the notification LED. Otterbox, I'm very very dissappointed!! Samsung too.. I dropped my desire z multiple times on pavement/concrete, no harm done. Unbelievable...
so let this be a warning to commuter users! anyone have similar experiences?
I have the same case and dropped my phone multiple times. My phone has survived every accidental drop with no scratches, cracks, etc......yet. The Commuter case is also in good condition with no blemishes on it other than the usual lint.
Ugh so I just had bad luck.. it was the very first time I dropped it too.

lol nah.. i would have seen. I went back to where I dropped it today... flat concrete, no protrusions/ pebbles. but judging from the screen cracks it looks like there was one area of impact, and a small chunk of screen is missing from there, and most of the cracks radiate from there outwards. really scratching my head here..
anyways, I bought a new screen.. if that one cracks I'm just going to be sad.
I use the same case and dropped my phone a few times hard and it was fine. I too am thinking it must have been some hard protruding debris the screen fell in to. One more reason for me to get a glass screen protector.

My question is; did Otterbox ever claim that your phone would be invincible with the Commuter? If the company said that, there would be no more Otterboxes. In nearly any case, a fall could shatter the screen. It happened on my iPod touch, on my original Droid. It doesn't matter what case is on. Glass smacking the floor with result in a fall.

falls onto flat surface? facedown? I'm trying to get an idea of if this kind of thing would happen if it were dropped onto a flat suface, or because there was a small rock or something that actually impacted the screen. i'm leaning towards the protrusion idea
attached some pics. the missing chunk is just at the bottom of the screen protector. the chunk of glass below that originally looked fine, just two cracks on either side, but it's white now- guess it got loose over the weekend.
any forensic glass experts? opinions?
I returned my commuter case last week, thing is a lint collector/insanely bulky vs the reviews it has on Amazon.
Yes two of the drops were face down...one on solid concrete and the other on the hardwood floor. It seemed to be saved by the lip on the case which I admit is pretty thin compared to say my ballistic case.

ahh so the commuter saved them then? I want to know that my case was caused by an errand pebble, not the commuter failing to protect the screen with the lip. I don't want to smash my new screen again. then I'll be the biggest idiot in town..

I had a very similar drop and result last week. I had mine in a diztronic case and an xo skin, and the screen shattered. I guess I should get a tougher case, but if the same thing happened with the commuter, and so many people use diztronic with no problem, it might have just been bad luck/physics. Like you, there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary about my drop.
Truthfully the commuter is advertised as a light duty case and the defender the heavy duty. You could upgrade to a ballistic or Agesis case, but neither case may help if the screen hits a rock. I'm going to be getting the glass screen protector for that reason.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
No case will protect the phone from a direct impact on the screen.
Even a small pebble on the ground that sticks up higher than the case's lip will crack it. Falls from less than 2 feet probably wont matter if you have a screen protecter or an otterbox defender, but a shoulder - height fall is probably the end of your device if the screen is directly impacted.
was this outside too?

So I have a cracked back cover, and I now found a crack on the plastic bezel today. Not drop damage. It must be stress fracturing or something. I also have minor scratches on screen. The stuff I wouldn't see until a year of use with prior gorilla glass phones.
My buddy dropped from pocket onto his wood deck and the glass cracked.
I see multiple people reporting cracked screens from minor falls.
Starting to question the reliability of what appeared to be a great device. Phones shouldn't need babied.
Other thoughts or experiences?
Dropped mine the other day, minor dent to bezel next to screen and its barely noticeable. Kicker to the while thing is that I was on my way into T-Mobile to return the case that was on it and I dropped it coming out of my car. It bothers me but at least the screen didn't take any damage. I have the full coverage on it in case of any future damage. But the phone definitely needs to be babied.
No case? No screen protector? I've dropped mine 3-4 times...no damage to either casing or screen. For a $500 device...keep it reliable by buying **** for it.

I haven't needed a screen protector since gorilla glass. That's been like 4 phones ago. I never experienced scratching like I have now.
Seems like you may be a little to rough...Buy a case. Hell even a flip cover would provide "Some" protection. No one ever plans to drop their phone, it happens. Even the smallest dent would bother me lol.
solution = get a case + screen protector. Honestly this is a device you use all day and carry with you. You are bound to drop it, let it slip out of your hand or watch it fall out of your pocket, bag, etc. dropping phones happens! it not just some myth..

Smartass solution: Take better care of your stuff. I've had a cell phone for 8 years and not once have I dropped any of them on a hard surface.
Real solution: Get a protective case, not a cheap little plastic something. Otterbox Defender or Trident Kraken.

when i ordered mine from verizon i went on youtube to learn about it and saw a guy drop an iphone and the S3 from his pocket level. Both screens cracked.
verizon offered for 6.99 two repairs per year each at a cost of 100. And, no more than 2 per year!
Best buy i found out for 9.99 will repair or replace for nothing and as many times as you like!!!
I canceled verizon and waited till best buy had it and bought it there with the black tie plan.

heck a casemate pop which is fairly small saved mine 2 times alread you cant just get a cheepie plastic snap together and think you are golden..
I've got a small scratch on my screen now that drives me nuts. I've never used screen protectors on my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note and never had a scratch.
I have no idea how it happened. I am very careful about putting it in empty pockets, laying it face-up, etc.

Along the same lines, I've got the gray Speck Candyshell on mine and love it. I haven't dropped it (yet...but I will) and I'm confident it will protect it. FWIW, I've also got the ZAGG HD screen protector, so mine is well-protected.
I can't imagine people using a phone like this without some sort of case. Everyone knows how the shiny back of the Candyshell scratches, but I couldn't care less about that. I look at it like this...the scratches I see on the case would be on the back cover of the phone if it wasn't on there. Better for the case to take the damage than the phone.

A small speck of sand in your pocket is sufficient to cause a scratch, depending on how it rubs the screen.
The candy shell designs are very good tbh. I had the Speck single-piece, in black, on my Galaxy Note and it felt great. It had the lifted lip edge for the screen and a mixture between hard plastic and TPU/silicon. It cost me $45 for that case not $5 for a silicone case like those guys that cracked their phones.

Cases are used. Phones are cracked. Mine was not dropped.
Here's one pic from my cracked back. To all of you who assume your $50 case will save you... Good luck.
Anyone know of any TPU cases that have a nicely raised lip that would protect the screen? All of the TPU cases I've seen are just flat around the screen and shattering it is what I'm worried about most.
This is the one I use, and it works great. Especially for the price.

Yes I have this case and several others. It would protect it from scratches but its not really impact resistant so the screen would probably break. I use my casemate tough 90% of the time. It offers better protection than any TPU case without adding much weight or bulk.

I have the same matte black Diztronic case linked here, and it has protected my phone through 2 falls, one of which was on the screen. They were both from pocket height and one of them was onto sharp gravel. Phone still looks good as new. If I were to buy another case though, it would be the gloss smoke one. The matte one is kind of slippery, but it is better than the phone alone.
If you want uber protection, buy an otterbox defender. I've seen a S3 wearing one take a dive off of a second story roof onto a concrete sidewalk and the case wasn't even scratched.
I've been using the standard diztronics cases for a while and then a few months ago I started using this http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007AXMF62
The white really does look sexy on a black phone. The Cimo S-Line has textured sides as well so it's easier to hold on to. I've dropped the phone a few times in the parking lot at work and have yet to take any damage. Great cases
So I've had an otterbox defender for awhile now, but am starting to hate it.. All the outer protective layer in no longer wanting to snap out of its grooving, lint constantly gets under the screen, and it's just so bland looking...
I've checked through the accessories section and didn't find quite what I'm looking work..
I'm looking for a nice case, that has a BUILT IN screen protector like the otterbox defender, and isn't as bland and boring..
yes I could get a new otterbox but then I'd just need a new one later on when the rubber no longer likes to stay put.. Which is more waste of money.. Something that's good quality with minimal issues and a built in screen protector would be appreciated..
Checked trident stuff but all of them are just shells without built in screen protectors..
Also, I do NOT want to use an adhesive screen cover. In my experience those like to pop off and pretty much have to get thrown away because of the stickiness going away and possible lint stuck on it for good.
What can I tell ya, I use the otterbox and am a great fan. As is the nature of my work, my phone is exposed to a lot of dust, and potential scratching agents. after that the rubber looks like **** and yes, it starts to not want to stay. In my experience it's not that bad yet. The built in screen protector did get particles underneath which ended up making minute scratches that are hardly visible. Nevertheless the phone looks great once its out, still looks relatively new and considering what its been threw, I'm an otterbox believer lol.
I haven't seen any cases that are similar or that provide the amount of protection from both scratches and shock as the otterbox. I'll keep posted in case there is an alternative in case I decide to buy a new case.

I have the Griffin survivor and work in dirty dusty wet crawl spaces for a living. This phone never leaves my hip when i crawl under a house.
Phone still looks brand new if i take the case off. The dust/water repel films do make the speaker have a lower sound. But i have found ways to live with it via sound mods. The ear piece one i haven't noticed a difference in call quality.
The filters over the mics work great and dont affect quality. You have flaps that cover the camera and flash and headphone jack.
The only gripe i have is the camera flap. Works great but if you need to take a quick picture it can be a hassel. I've gotten good at doing it though.
Idk anything about the ballistic hard core series, but until the Armor series comes out, i believe the Griffin survivor is the only comparable case to the defender.

It sounds like the Griffin survivor is much better for moist environments and dusty environment than is the OtterBox. With the OtterBox small particles sometimes tend to get underneath the screen protector and as I had mentioned will scratch the screen a little. The scratches are almost not noticeable but they're still there. I wonder though, is the Griffin survivor would surpass the OtterBox in shock protection. Perhaps it's because I've never had a Griffin survivor but I trust my OtterBox defender with my life you can say. Ohh the falls it has taken...

Yea, there is someone here reporting a broken screen on the first fall with an Otterbox Defender. It all depends but I guess both cases are pretty sturdy. As with most things it's a biased decision which one you prefer; although the Griffin is sounding kinda nice because of the camera flap, etc. You won't believe what happen on the first day I got this phone. Something manage to get into the least protected part, the camera, and damaged it in an area that doesn't affect picture quality at all. Guess I was lucky. After all I think we should both consider ourselves lucky are bones have been with us during work despite us both working in pretty rough fields. Not your typical office setting lol.

I use body glove and it's excellent. Check it out. Rugged yet flexible.

Because this gorilla glass isn't as tough as they claim.. It very lightly went over a grain of sand and scratched.. I'm stuck with this for 2 years and don't want it damaged or all scratched up

Gorilla Glass will protect against keys and hitting it on things. Sand and dirt will scratch it easily. Just the way it's made.

I have had 2 Otterbox Defenders and like them alot. The first one failed an unplanned drop test, but the phone was intact so it did it's job and was easier to just get another one rather than muck around with a warranty. I always remove the provided screen protector since it has a gap between it and the screen face and install a removable one right on the phone. If I want pretty, I peel off the protector and remove the case... ie new phone look on a 9 month old device. If I want protection, well, there you have it. I also have a Body Glove Drop Suit and like it equally as well depending on the situation and environment.

The Nexus 5 is pretty easy to break, I couldn't believe the video.
We need to protect our phones really well and I need suggestions for a decent yet appealing case.
Thanks
Well i ordered two cases when i got mine and they seem pretty good from all the feed back i've seen on here
SPIGEN Google Nexus 5 Case ULTRA HYBRID
and this
SPIGEN Google Nexus 5 Case Slim Armor
But that drop test made me cry i tiny bit

Holy crap i dont think ive ever seen screen breakage this bad
Easy to break? It fairs pretty well in side drops, no? Any glass will break if it directly hits the ground; raised lips helps to prevent this scenario.
A simple TPU case with raised lips should do the job.
Alternatively you can grab some skins to cover the phone to prevent dents, and use glass or anti-shatter screen protectors.

I never expected this, even after the numerous complaints about the nexus 4 being very fragile...
I guess we should add one of those rhino shield or similar screen protectors to our phones ASAP.
Yeah, sorry about the title, the screen protector is more important in this case
Waiting for a lifeproof imitation....
That made me cringe. Glad I have a case.

it survived 3 drops at 5 ft. 2 drops that landed on the same bottom side. glass vs cement will always result in the same way. seeing how everything still functions after the glass being shattered that badly is actually more surprising.
Got my Nexus 5 on Monday, but case wont arrive until next week.
Left it in a drawer and, after this video, thats where it will stay.
Ordered the SPIGEN Google Nexus 5 Case ULTRA HYBRID.

I beg to differ. I dropped my S2 with no cover or screen protector so many times on it's face, sides, back and all 4 corners. It fell so bad that the corners actually warped over the glass and are all indented.
Screen... Spotless. Very tiny scratches here and there, but after 2 years I am amazed at the quality of the gorilla glass on that phone.

I hope you at least get it out and play with it enough to see if there are any defects.

I'm not sure whether it's the bigger screens or that the newer gorilla glass generations are weaker, but screens are definitely more breakable these days.
In the three years I've had it I've beaten the **** out of my Sensation, but the screen is still flawless.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate at the moment and have dropped it numerous times on its front, side and back... Aside from some scuffs on the case, there's really nothing else wrong with it.
..Which leads me to believe that older android phones probably don't actually use glass as their screens. I think my Cappy's screen is probably plastic. It definitely can't be glass, considering how many times I've dropped it.
Oh no it's definitely glass - trust me on that one
I fumbled it mid air and inadvertently threw it to the ground (carpet) and it popped out a nice glass shard.
It's the raised edges that save it. I dropped it so many times too, but the slightly raised edges take all the force. I'm totally getting a case - just ordered a cheapy on eBay to hold out until I get something that shows off the phone better
i just started a thread for the case i'm gonna get for my n5. if you're paranoid about drops, this is the case for you.
Acase Superleggera PRO
so tough to watch....does anyone know what happens to the phone after he tests them? obviously something like that is just going to get returned or sold. and it would be a shame if he just wasted a N5 on a test like that..
My n5 I've already dropped 3 times from at least 4 foot. First one in the bathroom landed screen down on the tiles. I [email protected] myself. Not a mark
Second time in the kitchen again to tiles landed but I tried to catch with my foot and ended up kicking it on the bounce into the cupboard about 1.5meters away from where I was. Still no scratch
And third time in the garage I was using it as a torch dropped it straight to concrete didn't see what side it landed but haven't got a single scratch on it!
I'm shocked as hell
My ultra hybrid case really needs to be delivered asap the way im going.

Thanks for reassuring me that one fall may not break it.
I can see the buttery smoothness speed of KitKat on this phone is causing you problems...maybe time to underclock it a bit!
