I would love a way for this to be done. I use GV for texting all of the time, and this would give my N7 full texting capability. I would love to be able to send text by voice through Google Now while I'm driving.
Any thoughts?
Thanks guys.

Hm, I wonder if I can hack mine up somehow to do it.
Try this
I text using my N7 all day. This is how I do it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDMsImNvbS5rb3VzaGlrZHV0dGEuZGVza3RvcHNtcyJd
It isn't Google Voice, but it works great anyway. Set it up on your Android phone and set it to Google Talk. Then you can text via GT all day long.

Thanks for that, but I'm specifically looking for the ability to do it from Google Now, not from within the Voice app itself.

There has got to be a voice command for it?? Have you seen a list of commands that Google Now recognizes? I thought I saw one at some point, but I have no idea where.
I'll see if I can find it.

Yep, already checked all of the available commands. There is nothing. Ask to send a text or SMS and it simply tells you that the device does not support it. This is what I'm trying to go around. But thanks anyway .

Hi cushcalc. Thanks for the suggestion, but this doesn't have anything to do with what I'm asking for either . I understand the confusion, and I've tried to think of a way to word it differently to make it more clear, but I don't think I can. I believe that most people will just automatically jump to "oh, he wants to text with his N7!"
Thanks anyway .
You can text message via Google Voice from Google Now just by using the standard voice commands "Text Adam Hey" and it will text Adam the message "Hey" all you have to do is set Google Voice as your default SMS client. or just remove the stock messaging app as your default and it will ask you which to use each time. Settings > applications > messaging > clear defaults.

This is exactly what I hoped it would do, because this is how it works on the GNex right now on JB. But if you ask Google Now to text on the N7, it just tells you that it can't do it.

That has to be a development oversight... you'd think that that functionality would be built in. It should be for the N7 anyway.
There's got to be a trick to make it work... and I am curious to find out what it is.

Interesting, sorry for the false information then. My N7 is back at home and I just tested it on my GN real quick before posting that. I, just like you did, assumed it would be the same. That is VERY annoying indeed. almost as annoying as not being able to long press for numbers on the N7 keyboard for no apparent reason at all!!!

Agreed! I really feel like it's an oversight, but I'm baffled that it wasn't thought of beforehand. I was anticipating this feature before they were shipped.

Not a problem! I made the same assumption. Hopefully I can find an easy work-around until (hopefully) it's patched to allow initiating SMS via GV.

Wow this app is awesome. I was using Textab but this is even better. Not having to have a bluetooth connection is nice.
Yeah it's like they replaced Google voice with a gimped down version and gave us Google now.
Google now doesn't allow me to text and the interface doesn't seem fluid, by that I mean it should be more integrated and have more options.
This thread should have more attention

FY*I, there is the app in the android market call Googlve voice integration. It allows you to send SMS on your normal messaging app, through google voice. So all texts get delivered to your messaging app.
In theory, when google now sends a text, you can have it send through the normal messaging app, which this app would then send through google voice.
However, I've used the pro version, the full integration version, on CM10 with google now trying to do this, and it doesn't work. The integration app doesn't seem to catch the text being sent, and it gets sent through your carrier's number. But considering it is catching all other texts, I imagine that a small tweak would fix it.

I can't deal with the VM issues on CM7. Otherwise, it is awesome. But the text each time you get a voicemail is ridiculous.

Dammit I want it now, though.
Why would switching to gv for voice mail change your number? I have gv as my voice mail and I don't need to change my number. Whenever people call my sprint number and I don't pick up it just goes to gv voicemail.
Also the press 1 to talk prompt can be changed in gov setting via computer not android app. If you log in to gv on your computer you can change the settings.

+1 I like the Google Voice MUCH better than Sprint VVM.....and the text translations are free (though not all that accurate at times). Just alot more options than VVM.
im using youmail for visual voice mail on CM7, works like a charm, and i dont get those text messages from 9019 or whatever number it was, i can't remember if i blocked them with my messaging app, but i think just fiddling with some settings makes it go away, after my most recent flash a few days ago the text messages never showed up,
Even if you have a gv number, it's not like you have to change your number. Dialing your sprint number still gets people to your gv voicemail.
Plus, like said above, if you're getting texts, just block them. Most of the GB AOSP ROMs (if not all) have 4g now.
Right out of the box?
AT&T needs to turn it on first.

It will call your voice mail.

Okay, so when I activate my device, do I need to call ATT to turn it on?
I thought its a paid feature? Just use Google Voice instead
Google Voice did not seem to be working on my phone. Anyone able to get it working on theirs, or is there some issue with Google Voice and the S3 for now?
AT&T Messages
you need to get AT&T Messages from the Google Play Store you will get all you message, Voicemail, and calls in one spot.
From the main/home screen go two screens to the left and click on the AT&T Messages icon. It will walk you through the setup as mentioned above. I believe it specifically states the service is free (as it should be).
Now my question is why didn't they put this on the main/home screen? Why not make it the default? Who wouldn't want VVM?

There is already a thread about google voice's voice mail. You just have to dial a number to activate it. On mine it still says Carrier Voice mail, but my missed calls actually go to google's voice mail.
I went to the Play Store and downloaded AT&T's Visual Voicemail app. That worked well.

Visual Voice mail is great for voice mail. Really nice app. Love it.
AT&T messages combines text, voice mail, ect. rendering your regular messaging app useless or getting double notifications, and you can't turn them off from the at&t app. (it is basically the devil. And I made just to disable it as soon as I got the phone.)

art vvm app is OK, but Google voice has a cleaner look and operation. neither is intuitive to set up though so read the directions.
att messages is terrible and should be disabled or uninstalled or nuked from orbit.
No matter what I do I can't get att visual voicemail to work. The app tells me that it is has not received a response from att. I've called att and my account is set up correctly but the app still doesn't work so I just gave up and use YouMail.

Fear of apple has made Samsung remove the Google search function that can search on contacts on the phone. However you can reinstall it yourself. Do a search for. 'universal Google search.'
The universal Google Voice can call and text as well as do lots of other things.
If you mean the Samsung S-Voice it can dial and text with the universal goggle search.
Also you install Google Now but again it can't directly text or call but can bring up the contact with the right app.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I have to correct myself on my last post. Google Now can do mail, phone calls and texts. I was using the wrong word or phrase. I would say text so-and-so and it would give me a list of the person's contact numbers. text or send text both work the same. It can invoke the gmail program simarly.
Saying dial or call so-and so work number makes it call out. You can also state a numeric number.
It seems to not have some rather short attention span for body of the messages and unless you can get it in to the initial search it doesn't ask you what you want to send, which S-Voice does.

To get Google voice to work you must first download it from the play store. Then run it. It will tell you that it can't change your forward numbers. The go on your browser and goto the Google voice website (make sure you hit menu and request desktop site). On the site look for settings. (Somewhere in the top right. Then choose to set up your phone. Choose your carrier and it will give you a number to call. That number will change your forwarding numbers for you. Then in the voice app change settings to show voicemail in call log.

Hi all, sorry for another question so soon. Anyway, with my old rooted re-rommed Evo 4 I was able to integrate with Google Voice and actually send text messages using Google Voice on the PC or on my tablet. I seem to have been able to get Google Voice "integrated" on the Optimus G, but I don't have the ability to send text messages from PC or tablet. Does anyone know anything at all about this? Any ideas? Thanks!

Not sure why you are having that problem. My Google voice is working right. I was just on the PC yesterday sending texts.

Might have to remove your phone from Google voice and re add it?
I've had issues with Goggle Voice also that once I Integrate my sprint number with google voice, anybody that tries to calls me gets a busy signal. Don't even know how to fix this.
I've also had problems with google voice, whenever someone calls me and I answer, it goes straight to voicemail and I can even hear google voice talking.

Try uninstalling the GV app in the Play store then download it again. It should bring you through the settings again to confirm carrier integration. If that doesn't work go to voice.google.com on the computer, click the little gear on the top right, click settings and check the phone settings. You should see the little sprint logo next to your phone number.

This is not a "problem" but a feature... They call it call screening. Press 1 to accept the call, even after the person has started leaving a message. I turned off this feature. Go to voice.google.com on the computer, click the little gear on the top right, click settings, then click the tab for "Calls". Call screening is the first option, turn it off.
I only know all this because I have used GV since it first came out, then integrated immediately when Sprint made it an option.
Thanks all for the replies. I did as suggested and uninstalled google voice then reinstalled. It still wouldn't let me send texts from PC or tablet, but I guess I wasn't patient enough, because a short while later those features became available. So I guess for whatever reason there was a delay but I'm in business now.

I think there might also have been a slow-down on GV's end the past couple of days; I just received a voicemail from last night and a text from earlier this AM, so there might've been some general strangeness afoot as well.
So the real question for me is will the Verizon version have visual voicemail available to it

I'm curious if it will work with Google Voice Lite without the Google Voice App. Having to use the app does get irritating when it stops running in background and causes delayed notification if you don't have Text or Email notification active. Also it does seem the app doesn't get updated much.
I have missed important messages in the past and now I check the Google Voice app at least once a day to make sure it had not stopped.

I haven't used the GV app on my phone in months (or over a year now) - had to check to see if it was still there To be honest, I don't think it is needed after the initial set up.
I get my notifications via an Email from GV to my mailbox, with the transcriptions and link to message - I also get a text message sent to my GV#, which results in a SMS on hangouts app.

Thanks for the reply but like I said before if you have Text and EMail notification turn off you just get a voicemail notification from native app and could use native app to check. But if the Google Voice App stops you don't get the Notification because messages do not sync with the native app.
Text and Email notification (icon) if you have a lot notification do not standout as much as the voicemail notification (icon). Would be much easier if Google would include Google Voice Lite in the native app without having the separate app for syncing.
Transcription has never worked well for me because everyone beside Robo spam that leave me a message have Spanish accents. (Funny to read and trying to guess what they really said) Google Voice Lite app has the transcription but would be better in native app.

Understood. I don't use the native app for voicemail notification, so I never ran into this issue. I just rely on the hangouts notification. Thanks for the clarification
