Stock Apps Update... Sort of... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus seems to be having problems updating some of the stock apps. This is an example of what is happening:
I'll get a new text and it'll show up in the status bar, notification tray, and messages app, but NOT the messages widget on my home screen
I am running 4.1 with the ROM titled simply "Jelly Bean" from ROM Manager (the I/O release)
Any ideas? I just switched from and iPhone 4S to this and am really enjoying it so far but a few bugs like this are quite bothersome

[Q] TouchWiz Lockscreen With Handcent

I haven't seen anyone ask this before, so I figured it was worth a shot.
On the TouchWiz Lockscreen, when you have a new text, you can pull it down to see the message. Now, I want to know if it's possible to, instead of having it go to the stock messaging app, having it go to Handcent... is there any way to do this?
Thanks,
Hasseo

I think you are talking about the pull down menu at the top that shows notifications - if so then you should only have to turn off notifications for the stock app and you will only get the handcent ones
the lock screen, I only get the handcent notifications - its not something that can be "pulled down" but you can set it to have the popup show and thats sorta the same - but its been so long since I used the stock messaging app the new design sucks and I stopped months ago when 2.2 came out the DK28 version and the messaging app was changed - I went to handcent and never went back - I dont know whats the matter with people but there is no reason why we shouldnt be able to change the stock messaging app back to the way it was before
if you are talking about the icon at the bottom of the screen - you can just change it with the handcent app
this is one of the major features in 2.2 IMO for these phones - the ability to change the bottom icons

He's talking about the Lockscreen. Like, when you get a new text, you can slide the unlock circle down to go straight to the new text, or up to just unlock. As far as I know, you can only do that with the stock messaging app, as it only appears if you have notifications enabled for it. It also is the same for missed calls.

This is exactly what I meant xD.
And gah ok. This is the one thing that frustrates me about the TouchWiz lockscreen!
Ya, wish there were better third party locks for free.

JB DETAILED Screenshot Gallary + Small changes

Gallary : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/aqvteoek9k8ewwq/yzKZD-V6vJ
Small changes that I've noticed so far:
1. the multitasking menu loads instantly when you press the button, but it makes you wait on the dimmed screen while it load the app screenshots. It gives the illusion of being faster.
2. "Hotword Detection" : launch voice search when you say "Google". It doesn't seem to work though.
3. New Developer options:
SD card privacy protection
Animator duration scale
Disable HW overlay
etc
4. Messaging app widget!
5. New Contacts icon
6. New share action pop out and app selector popout (big icons)
7. Default font seems to be a little thinner than ICS Roboto in some places.
8. Navigation is still Gingerbread looking. Background gradients are still pixelated. WTF Google?
9. NOTIFICATIONS CAN BE DISABLED. This one is a godsend. You can long press on notifications to get the info of the sender app (useful for detecting spam apps)
10. When keyboard is active, the back button turns into a downward arrow (just like tablet ICS).
11. WPS for Wifi
12. Browser has a chrome style card stack animation in tab view (was this in ICS?)
13. Wifi-direct has more options (like CM9)
14. "Add-on dictionaries" : it's empty now until 3rd party keyboards leverage the new API.
15. Kernel is based off 3.0.31 (ICS was 3.0.8)
16. Google play music has been updated (Nexus Q settings link, better interface, etc)
17. Keyboard shortcuts (example: brb expands to "be right back"). I'm not sure if this was present in ICS.
18. There is a nice animation in Camera when you tap the last picture thumbnail. The contact preview animation is MUCH improved (as shown in the keynote).

Installed via Koush's RM method? That's not an SDK build. It's a pre-release ("Beta") build OTA'd to the I/O handout GNex's. Its actually a properly made build though.

My bad. I was a little disapointed in the speed/smoothness, not because it's not smooth, but because Google made such a fuss about it that I thought it's going to be iOS smooth. I was hoping the factory images will be better, but I guess this is as good as it gets (which is still pretty good).
BTW Hotword detection works. You have to be inside Google Now and say "Google".

I think a lot of people would disagree with you. I had the iPhone 3G, 4, 4S (for 3 years) and iPad 2 (still do). The animations (opening apps, switching apps, opening app drawer, opening notifications, etc) are MUCH smoother on iOS. I'm not talking about general "speed". I'm talking about visuals of the animations and transitions.
Just the fact the google had to mention "Project butter" at the beginning of the keynote and emphasize it as the main change in JB shows the ICS wasn't there compared to iOS and WP7.
This JB build is a good improvement over ICS. I'd say if iOS was 100% smooth, GB was 30% and ICS was 70%, then JB would be around 85% smooth.
This is not the place to argue about this however

This is new. Just tried typing "brb" using stock keyboard on my GNexus, it auto-corrected to "barb".
I'm just waiting on the download to finish before flashing, I cannot wait

[Q] Recent Applications Dialogue

Hello everyone, long time forum creeper, first time poster
Anyway, I'm running AOKP JB on my Sprint GS3, and I've noticed that, through a program I bought on the market, "GMD Gesture Control" It's actually possible to invoke the GB version of the Recent Application Dialogue, instead of the ICS and forward version which shows screenshots of the open apps in a list. I've never actually liked the new list, as you can see all the icons in the old dialogue, instead of scrolling through a list for what you want to find. I've just always been really annoyed that google sacrificed functionality for style. So what I was wondering was if it was possible to bind this, since it is apparently still active, but dormant in 4.1.1, to the hold down the home button action, as GMD Gesture Control really kills the battery. There had actually been an option for this in the ICS version of AOKP that I had used on my Epic 4G, followed by my Epic 4G touch, and I LOVED it. Unfortunately they have yet to merge this functionality in to their JB builds of AOKP. If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it, been looking for a way to do this forever! Thanks!

[Q] Why does the notification bar lag in Jelly Bean?

So, I'll try and describe the lag. Supposedly, the Jelly Bean animations are all 60fps. But on the homescreen, when you pull the notification bar, I'm sure you will notice a slight (but still noticeable, at least 30fps) decrease in the smoothness. If you pull the notification bar with an app open (you can easily try it yourself, with the Messaging app, or even the Settings), it will be very smooth.
Is there a way to fix this? By overclocking the processor, the memory, I don't know, something like that? Can I flash something to fix this? I've tried searching everywhere, and people actually complained about it in some ROMs' forums (ParanoidAndroid for instance), but no dev seems to do anything about it.
TL;DR: I've been experiencing a slight lag in the notification bar, in ALL the Jelly Bean ROMs I've tested. Am I doing anything wrong?

Note: This becomes even more noticeable if you use a Live Wallpaper.
I notice this on my galaxy nexus as well. Must be something weird on jb :/

I experience the same thing on my HTC One X. The notification drawer is "choppy" and lags when you pull it down home screen, but in apps the notification drawer it is buttery smooth.
This happens on CM10 nightlies (20121006), IceColdJelly 2.4, and the Endeavoru AOSP rom.

I also had that in the CM10 but I am now using Maximus 4.1 and it is great on that ROM.
I have the same problem with my Galaxy SII on AOKP JB build 4. :crying:
No lag on sense based build smooth as butter.

it only lags on the launcher's home screen.. but in apps its very smooth.. anyway to fix it?
I think this might have to do with the background going darker, as you pull the bar down. If you have a solid color wallpaper and drag the bar down, it will lag much less than if you have a picture as wallpaper, and I think this might happen because, when the background goes darker, you can tell it creates some banding, and that may result in the lag.
Anyway, just my two cents.

That's Jelly Bean, the notification drawer is definitely annoying and strange somehow, if you choose a custom background for it you can see that when you pull down the bar the wallpaper seems to scroll down cleanly and @~60fps, and the bottom bar (the one which changes color when you touch it) seems to run at a different framerate.
Someone must fix it!
Try disabling the hw overlays in developer options if its available.

I've disabled hw overlays in developer options and it is still laggy. This lag is still present in 4.1.2 (running CM10 Nightly).
In Flow's video review of Ice Cold Jelly 3.0 - AOKP, you can also see the lag present when he pulls down notification in the homescreen.
So the current information we have is this:
- notification dropdown lags only in the launcher homescreen and app drawer
- the dropdown is very smooth in apps
- some JB roms on other devices also experience this (GNex and SII) as reported in this thread
- the sense JB rom for One X doesn't have this issue
Do have any devs acknowledging the lag? does any rom's issue tracker have this?
When CM10 reaches RC stage we can find an official bug report
Many people are reporting notification bar dropdown lag, in AOSP based ROMs, and that in Sense-based ones this doesn't occur.
I know there are many kinks and bugs that need to be fixed on all ROMs, and that no ROM is perfect. But seriously, this one really annoys me, it takes all the fun out of Jelly Bean.
There's no Jelly Bean without Butter, and with this lag, it just looks like we're back to the Gingerbread ages.
If anyone could please find/suggest a fix for this, I'd be so, so grateful.
As people have mentioned, the notification bar is buttery smooth when there's an app open, but unless:
- The app is showing a dialog
- The virtual keyboard is showing
I've noticed the above while debugging my app (DataSync), but so far it seems to be an issue on all apps. To replicate try the following:
Open settings
Verify the notification drawer is opening and closing without any lag at all.
Tap "Performance", notice a warning dialog shows
Pull down the notification bar, notice the drop in framerate compared to the last attempt
Close the dialog
Pull down the notification bar again, notice it's once again smooth.
The framerate drop is less noticable with the keyboard open, but still there.
Is there any fix for it? or still no one working on it? Sometimes it is really annoying too see it, i had this problem with my galaxy nexus long long time ago, but when i took him now in hand it seems to be rly smooth.
I can't see any difference in the behaviour of the notification drawer if opening it while navigating the app drawer or while standing by in an app, whatever it is, or even when I drop it down from the homescreen. It's always 40fpsish. I bet it's somehow related to transparency which is completely unneeded and I cant disable it.
My question is WHY a single-core iphone4 notification bar drops down at 1000fps and a quad-core android device should draw it at 40fps.
Someone said "Lol wtf you complain about cm10 is in early nightly stage" well no man now it's stable and completely full of bugs anyway.
I'm subscribed to this thread so I'll still wait for a fix....
For me? cm10 is always in early nightly stage. I changed my rom to rd miui ics becouse of battery. This room is pretty fast, looks good for me. jelly bean roms on galaxy nexus looks much better then ics becouse everywhere we have 60fps. if on onex jb roms i haven't always 60fps i don't need it. I will wait for stable version. jelly bean with standart or bricked kernel, 10h work with 2h display and i havent battery, here i have 16h and 3 h display and still 37%
I notice this a lot myself. Compared to my mother's iPhone 3GS running iOS 5 and my cousin's G2 (Desire Z) running AOKP ICS, the notification shade on my phone is really damn slow. I wonder if this was done intentionally by Google to keep a consistent speed for the shade.
I had this too. Specially at the bottom part of the pulldown menu. It stuttered like crazy. Seems to been gone when I switched from ondemand governor to interactive with input boost enabled.

[Q] Question About Notification Order

First off sorry if this is the wrong section
I currently use 2 instances of Widgetsoid in my notifications(1 for sys toggles, 1 for most used apps)
For some reason randomly these get stuck at the top of my notifications shade(below AOKP toggles) and all my new SMS, Gmail etc notifications file below them
This is a pain bcuz 4.1 and 4.1.1 only automatically expand the top-most notification which would be Wigetsoid, even though it doesn't expand.
I know it can be done bcuz iv had it like this for the longest but for some odd reason after a reboot today it was changed
Im an extreeeeeeeeeeeeeme creature of habit and really desperate to get my old setup back. Which was setup like...
Notif shade:
AOKP Toggles
Newest notif (auto-expand)
Notif
Notif
Widgetsoid 1st instance
Widgetsoid 2nd instance
Google Now Cards
Id even pay for it
Anybody here got any clues?
Im runnin AOKP JB b5 if it makes any difference
I think it may have to do with the order the services start in
I made a custom boot animation n since jb was released the phone would hang after it played a good 10secs b4 my lock screen
Today I rebooted n saw no more hanging but its also when I noticed the change in the notif shade
IMA try kill in widgetsoid at startup n see what happens
