Problems with my ROM lately. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

AOKP has been buggy for me lately, I've been getting really weird text messages that don't have english characters in them, and I can't download or send picture messages.
Is this happening to anyone else or just me? It was working great when I first got it, but lately it's been being really strange. Normally if I just reboot my phone everything works fine when it turns back on, but it hasn't been that way for a few days now.
Would wiping dalvik and all that stuff fix it? I don't have a windows PC at my disposal to install a new ROM or anything, so I'm trying to just make this work.

Those texts messages with scrambled text are warning alerts that currently being tested and AOKP at the moment cannot read them correctly. I herd you can block those text messages by using gosms.
What build are you on? I remember builds prior to build 40 had trouble sending SMS. The newest build, Milestone 6, has SMS working. You can install it on your phone without your computer by using Mobile Odin, flash EL26 kernal, factory reset, flash new rom and gapps. You could flash over your current from but it could be very buggy.

I'm on build 40 at the moment, But I guess since I have mobile Odin from a few weeks ago, I can try flashing the new Milestone onto my phone. There isn't anything that should go wrong, is there? Or is there anything else I need to worry about?
Also, how will I do the factory reset? Boot into recovery?

Download rom file + latest gapps and place them at the root of your sdcard
Download EL26 CWM Kernal
Download Caulkin's Format All for ET4G
Install Mobile Odin
1. Select EL26 CWM Kernal and flash it through Mobile Odin
2. Upon reboot, hold power+volume and boot into recovery.
Once inside recovery, choose the option factory reset, then wipe cache and dalvik cache.
Then flash Caulkin's Format all for the ET4G
Then flash the rom
Then flash gapps
Reboot
Done!

Also, when you said bugs can occur, what exactly did you mean? Could these bugs brick my phone, or just bugs within the ROM itself and not necessarily with the phone as a whole? And how likely are these bugs able to occur?

If you use a safe recovery then the only bugs to worry about are within the rom. Only bug being reported lately is seldom screen glitches...been on aokp since the last build and it runs as my daily driver. Calls/wifi/4g/video playback/data/sms/mms/Bluetooth all work fine.

Just bugs within the rom. For example you might get force closes or apps might stop responding, some of your apps might not be there. Stuff like that because between rom updates, things change/break and applying a rom on top of a updated one is highly likely to break to some things. It's highly recommend to start fresh every time. You can still back up your apps using apps like Titanium Backup for example or text or anything of the sort.

[Q] How does one go backwards?

Phone works great. Little hard on my eyes, might be the coloring of the theme. I just want to try something new, like CM9, but noticed that I have to go back to GB before I can go to CM9. Im just confused as to what to do now.
My phone currently reads:
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband version: S710.10 S.FE10
Kernel version: [email protected] #3
Build number: RUJELUS22 The Blu Kuban FE10 1.0.3.5
If someone could explain how to go backwards so I can go back up to CM9 I would be very grateful!

Ok well Odin on PC would work fine. Download all your files (rom, gapps, whatever you need to) and flash the el26 kernal with cwm. Then when that's finished and your phone tries to reboot, pull the battery and then put it back in, then boot into the recovery. Wipe all data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, then flash rom, then gapps and whatever else you may need. Be sure to do a nandroid backup when you first get into recovery.

Which el26 kernel? I think I had it, don't know where it went >.>
el26_stockcwm.tar.md5?
So I just boot into recovery, flash from that and then as its rebooting i pop battery out, go back into recovery and load up CM9 and then load up gaps and let its start?
Be sure to wipe everything first. And yes that .tar file is the one you need. Do yourself a favor and re-read the cm9 installation process just to be safe.

Ok, if you want gapps, then download whichever kernal the rom comes with, just the kernal tho. Then flash el26cwm again and flash gapps, then before you reboot, flash the kernal that you had just downloaded with rom. You won't lose any data so you have nothing to worry about.

Ok.
So Im using Odin PC to put EL26CWM back onto the phone, then boot up the phone into recovery. Then I flash gapps onto it, but before restarting flash the kernel thats supposed to come with CM9. Right?
Now, I don't really like the recovery that comes with CM9, I feel like the display is a lot darker and I don't have as many options. Can I use another recovery?
Also my boot screen is for the I9100 and it has a yellow triangle. Whats that about?
Don't worry about the yellow triangle for now. We'll get rid of that later. And about the recovery, no. Leave the one that it comes with. If you flash a gb kernal then your phone won't boot. And the ice recovery isn't safe. And it won't be until source comes out and our devs make a safe cwm for pics. Til then, just stick with what you've got.

Can you give a little more information about your situation please? Did you update from an earlier version recently? Did you flash the full ROM over another ROM? Did you make sure to wipe the phone before flashing?
The more we know can possibly help lead to a quicker resolution.
dont really know to much about this stuff im a newbie by i follow directions to the T.. I installed to sd card rebooted in custom recovery and did a calks wipe and installed... Also i made sure it was on a gb rom before anything... 3.2.6 to be exact.. So did i do something wrong or am i missing something...? Open to any opinions... You don't have to be on a GB ROM to flash it, just need GB recovery or one of the format files (Calkulin or Rujelus) to flash for wipe before installing the ROM.
Did you have custom recovery installed?
Did you make sure to grab the full ROM and not just the update?
Did you download directly to your phone or to the computer? If you downloaded to phone then I'd suggest download again but to the computer and then copy to your sd card. Don't re-use the download you already tried to flash, it may have been borked in the downloading process.
(also, GB is 2.3.6, Honeycomb is 3.x)

I would make a backup with CWM and then do a full clean install and see if that helps. If it doesn't help you can always revert back to your backup.
freeze
ive experienced same issue every now and then primarily after reboot it will hang / freeze ect so i just go into adw settings and restart ADW works everytime if your on another launcher try to restart that launcher...

I have experience some of the same issues on 2 different E4GT. I like the the rom but random boots force me back to stock. The most recent phone does not have the EMMC bug in it so I triedd a complete wipe, but the rom would work great for about a day then have random reboots again and sometime blank screens.

Going from Blazer ICS Rom to AOKP ICS Rom

I have my rooted E4GT and the Blazer ICS Rom is installed on it at the moment. I kinda want to try and switch to AOKP's latest build and try it out, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that since they clearly stated not to flash from ICS to ICS.
Could anyone point me in the right direction as to what I should do in order to make the switch to AOKP?
Links to both ROM's respective threads:
AOKP Build 40
Phantom's Blazer Rom
Thanks for your time.
You can just Odin the el26 cwm (sorry don't have the link to it on my phone) and flash AOKP from there.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
This is my method, it is 99.9% safe. You can also re-use it to go from other ROMs to any other ics ROM.
Download these drivers
Download this: OC ODIN File for EL26 and this: E4GT Root Utility
Using Titanium Backup, make a backup of all your stuff, or use your preferred back-upper, just not nandroid. I recommend buying the Pro version, because it will save you so many times, and the dev is great. It's a little expensive though for an app.
OC Odin back to EL26. The good thing about this is, the process is straight forward, and doesn't add to your flash counter, and does not yellow triangle either.
Open up e4gtauto-sfx.exe, option C, then I. This gives you CWM, And just in case, I do not recommend using other than standard CWM to flash ICS roms. but that's me.
When your phone reboots, it should have CWM, and be rooted, just load up the AOKP files, do a data wipe, and flash.
Thank you both for the replies
Would I be able to use calkulins format all to do the wipes? Or does that only work for certain ROMS? It seemed pretty fool proof when I used it, so I was wondering if I could just use that again and it would work just the same? I don't want to forget something and brick my phone as a result
And I'll look into titanium backup, thanks for the suggestion.

Alright, but all I should need to do is install the EL26 + CWM and I can flash AOKP? I don't need to go back to a stock gingerbread ROM or anything, or will the OC EL26 CWM do that for me?
And you said you don't recommend calkulin's format all for ICS roms, but that's what I was told to use for the Phantom Blazer ICS rom when I was flashing it?
Also, one more question; what is "flash count" and is it a bad thing? I'll do some googling on it myself, but I'd like to hear your explanation because I don't always understand people's ways of describing things and usually take weird explanations to understand so yours would still be much appreciated just in case, thanks. ^_^

You just need to be on a safe recovery.... if you wipe data in an unconfirmed recovery you can cause a brick. Either use the el26 that all use or the el29-reboot kernel. Both will work no matter what you install regardless of you install (granted you flash a working rom). I prefer the el29 because you install via mobile Odin and it boots straight to safe CWM recovery.

Couple of problems after flashing roms

Alright, so I was running MIUI on my phone, and I decided to check out some other roms. I flashed the All Stars rom, wasn't too fond of it, then I flashed CM10. After flashing CM10, the default android keyboard kept crashing (it would continually pop up saying it has stopped every few seconds or so.) Also, my when I unlock my phone, there is no lock screen. Thirdly, my home button, well, doesn't do anything when I push it.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point, I flashed AOKP and the problems still persist. Any ideas on what I could do? Thanks.

If CWM 5.0.2.7 is still not working for you, update to CWM 6.0.x.x or even better try flashing and using the latst TWRP recovery system.
Make sure you do the proper data/cache wipes before flashing the ROM again. Also, flashing the proper Gapps file for the specific ROM may help you fix the issue you are having with the home button and possibly the application issues you are having.

(Q) Been Gone For Some Time...???

I was wondering how in the hell do i get updated to all the new updates and such.
Currently i'm rooted with Twrp 2.3.1.0, i used the toolkit back some time ago and game me the option to basically install custom roms and such but never did anything except for a kernel.
So my question is Im still on LJC, 4.1.1, and i'm sick of the pop ups for the install update, and i know its going to fail so i'd figure can i just install a custom rom and it will take care of all that crap like for instance just go ahead and start fresh and install CyanogenMod?

When you say CM 10 I'm assuming you're referring to CM 10.1? If so make sure your using the correct gapps and if you still face issues I suggest redownloading the ROM and gapps through Goomanager, make sure the MD5 match up, and then fully wipe and flash again. Keep me updated.

Just followed Rootbox instructions as i just literally tried that rom out, and same results. i cant match the md5 as it skips it during install process as it says there is no md5 file

Ok I see what you're doing. My brother had a similar problem and there seems to be something wrong with the kernel script not running through properly and to fix this you will need to perform a factory reset as the OP instructs BUT I would try it twice. Once before the flash and another after the flash. Try it and if that doesn't work try the same steps with a 3rd party kernel. Flashing a kernel after the ROM is not recommended but if it helps to boot up the phone then you'll know it was the stock kernel. Let me know

No AOSP ROMs at all? I would go back to complete stock, update to MA7 or MC2 then reroot and try flashing again.

Okay Well i wiped(factory reset under TWRP 2.5) then did advanced wipe and chose system option; then wiped. Then i had flashed CM10 then after flashed GApps, rebooted and bam into bootloop, and as i typing this i 'm doing the avatar rom and same thing bootloop. also i should mention it skips the md5 check and says there is no md5 file.
Just tried rootbox same thing gets as far as the boot ani then bam sits there

Wipe 3X. Data, System, cache, Dalvik.
Anything less and you're bound to get problems.

Does it bootloop...or have you just been impatient? 1st boots of a new ROM can take a while.
Presuming it is stuck at boot splash...either an unstable build, or a corrupt download are possible. Verify the MD5 of your downloads.

did you watch my video? it was sitting for 5 minutes,on the cyanogenmod boot animation.
i just restored and back on ljc perfectly fine. but i guess my phone does not like flashing as i said and in the video it hangs and skips the md5 check
okay i used Toolkit 4.1.0 and chose to flash to stock and it didnt work because i still have root and still on ljc, and same setup as before, i cant update to ma7, however i chose to install stock recovery, but i know if i do update it will fail.
EDIT: **** it wont even reboot to install the update. says rebooting now and nothing. F THIS PHONE.
I CANT EVEN UNROOT

Every device handles things differently, including first boot up times. It can take anywhere from 5-10min. So don't worry about how short Josh's boot up time was in his video. I highly suggest you:
1) Wipe system, data, cache/dalvik 3x
2) flash ROM and Gapps
3) Go back and perform a "factory reset" 3x
4) Reboot
5) Let phone sit at most 15min.
Just do this one final time exactly as instructed and assuming you've tried earlier nighties, if it doesn't boot up by 15 min then you'll know it's the phone and NOT you.

what do i do if its the phone? i cant even unroot, i cant even flash to stock WTF! tried using toolkit but nothing. only thing i accomplished was being able to install stock recovery, and went back into android and chose to reboot to install update from OTA wont even reboot when it says rebooting now.
