get-a-robot-vpnc working on ics? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm currently running Calk's 2.9.1 GB ROM, and I'm interested in making the jump to ICS. Get-a-robot vpnc is a must for my work vpn. Anyone have any luck with running that on an ICS ROM? My attempts on earlier "leaked" ics TW ROMs didn't work out and was forced to jump back to Calk's GB. Thanks for any tips.

I just got something going last night as a matter of fact. In a nutshell, I was able to get a working VPN connection using the built-in VPN client with ParanoidAndroid 2.15 (based on CM10). Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867283
I was also able to get connected using the VPNC app with a couple of other ROMs (re-calked 0.2.1, CM9 Beta 1) by creating my own /dev/net directory and giving it 777 permissions prior to starting VPNC (it was force closing every time prior to that change). However, I always got booted out soon after the connection was made in those instances due to an "INVALID_PAYLOAD" error.
I received a lot of help by trying suggestions in a Google Code page requesting an ipsec VPN client in stock android. The link to that is below, as well as three highlights from the page. Ultimately I used Option #1.
Good luck!

Issue 3902: Feature Request: "pure" ipsec vpn client (cisco-compatible)
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3902
1) The IPSEC VPN with Group Authentication ACTUALLY WORKS !!! On Android 4 just select:
Issue has been resoved in ICS!!!!
Choose:
- IPSec Xauth PSK: Compatible with Cisco SSL-VPN
- IPSec ID: GROUP USERNAME
- Preshared Key: GROUP PASSWORD
Connect to VPN and then enter personal username and password.
2) What I did to get around it was install NCP Secure Client from the Market (THANK YOU to whomever posted that!). It's in testing now, and available as such till the end of the month. It's just a 3rd party IPsec client, so you don't even bother with the native ICS VPN settings.
The mappings for NCP are slightly different. Here's a helpful link. http://www.ncp-e.com/en/products/ipsec-vpn-client-for-android.html . Basically:
Pre-shared Key= Group Password
IKE ID= Group Name
IKE ID Type= Free String Used to Identify Groups
Exchange Mode= Agressive
3) For anyone on ICS 4.0.3, try:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmail.mjm4456.vpncillatrial&hl=en
This does not require root and works fine even under ICS 4.0.3 where the standard Android VPN configuration does not.

Thank you for updated reply.
But do you know if using stock 4.0.4 ICS on XT910 RAZR MAXX built in VPN client it this possible?
All the best.

No clue. According to Google's response, it should work. But in my experience it is a bit of a crapshoot. I'd suggest starting with the code feature request link I included above to set if anyone else has posted regarding that device. Or head to a store and just try it.

If you have any request then do let me know.
working good, maybe need to have some ipv6 stuff
because next gen ip will be ipv6
im suggest
ipv6 ip class / unicast / multicast
ipv6 subnet calculator
maybe in the future also, mobile phone will have ipv6 tunnel client !!
so that , we can use ipv6 mobile number portability
will love it
thanks
put some network scanner, port scanner and wireless radar make it a network auditing tool like retina and netstumbler
that would be awesome!
i wish i could help in "technical" way

Ping Not Working Properly
Ping only works fine for the first time. It requires application restart to make it work. I'm using HTC HD2.
Suggestion: More network commands such as TRACERT, TELNET etc.

That was the bug in Ping which was identified, and will be fixed, already resolved in development, should patch it in next release.
Tracert/telnet good idea.
will try to include them in my todolist.
thanks.
great tool,
could have used such a useful tool during my aprenticeship.
settings --> exit is not working on my hd2
Sweet will try it soon my device won't install cab now.will look into it
Tried it, loved it. I always have problems calculating Class B IPs and I was hoping for one for my HD2 when I saw an Android version. I think it'll be better if there's support for IPv6 as well. Also, I used it for a while and found out the tool lagged about 1 to 2 second when switching to another menu, I'm still okay with that though.

[Q] Stock Chinese Froyo posibilities

Hi there all dev heads!
First post here so please bare with me...I have a headache after reading so many threads here...at least I'm willing to learn...
Here's my situation:
I'm a happy owner of a Moto Defy for a week now and before I go ahead and jump onto the rooting and the flashing bandwagon, I would like clear indications on what is possible to achieve, how to do it, what to expect and what not to do on my Defy.
Here are what I'm really after:
A) I want to know if there is a real "not de-blurred" stock (not OC at 1MHz) Chinese ROM that I can flash back to if anything fails don't the road? I know about the bootstraped recovery, but if I ever have to use RSD flashing, I'd like to start from official Chinese Motorola ROM and avoid losing my flash, email, SMS or what not...I'm in China afterall!!
B) I want to know if there is any way for me to use the magic of rooting/flashing to get my desktop VPN to work on my defy --> really I want this to be able to use Skype over wifi when I'm in my house. The Great firewall and Motorola seem to work together to block this possibility and let all the phone carriers controlled by "The Party" make money with the state-controlled carriers by not allowing any VoIP apps on the Defy. My VPN seems to 'lock in' [I see a key on the top taskbar] but I cannot access internet on the 2 browsers I tried [stock and Dolphin HD]. Do I need 'tun' or something??
C) I succesfully used an update.zip on my un-rooted phone to get a working Android market (as oposed to the stock and very limitted Chinese market) but what about being able to use the applanet market? Is it really worth rooting and maybe flashing just to do so?
All that I've seen so far here applies to 1) people living outside China and mainly not limitted by Chinese carriers or 2) people running with ROMs or Nandroids pre-Froyo. I'm not too bottered by Blur since I don't use 3G, social networks or ever data over 2G at the moment --> I connect only using my wifi.
I do understand the advantage of customizations and I sure would like to improve my battery usage by using something like Frozen-xx to use some sort of 'speedstep' on the processor [I find that downclocking under low cpu usage much more attrative than just OC for good quadrant scores...] but that will come maybe one day when I'm fully confident about all that is involved prior to get there. [i don't know what geodex and tun are exactly and I've never used adb backup, recoveries or flashing yet...]
So what is your take on this? Especially my 3 main points A, B C ??
Any Gurus here that can comment on this?
I know that there is a lot of the Defy dev't that originated from here in China, so is there anyone from China that really know what I specifically can do and hope to achieve?
Thanks all for your input and long live xda-dev !!
[Sorry for the long post but don't be shy to put a lot of info as well - the more explanation, the better for me ]
my findings...
I will write a reply to my own questions since someone in a similar situation might find my findings helpful one day...
A) So far, I'm happy with Froyo and can live with MotoBlur since I don't use any sort of sinch'ing. So I'm still not rooted and the standard reset recovery allows me to keep my stock ROM available.
B) VPN on the Defy requires a VPN without encryption to work - plain and simple! I checked with my desktop VPN supplier and they do have 3 specific VPN servers dedicated to smartphones and where encryption is turned off. So I was able to switch to one of those and I'm now over the Great Firewall!!
As for Skype over Wifi, you can only install it if you're within US or Canada. But with the magic of my VPN described above, I could download and install it easilly. The even greater news is that once it's installed, I no longer need to use the VPN to use it --> just over my livingroom's wifi and I'm doing calls!!
C) Like mentioned in the original post, I had the original Chinese market, updated to the standard Android market APk from an update.zip found here on xda-dev and I also found out that no rooting is required to use applanet market. [Althought if you're planning to use apks that require it, then you'll have to do it]
I'm now a happy camper with my Defy
If anyone would like pointers to a good VPN provider, write to me and I can use the referral service from mine [send them your email from my account] and that would give me some credits with them...
Cheers! And keep up developing!!

Android Security - PLAINTEXT AUTHTOKENS - How It Affects Us?

Recently Google have patched a 'major' security flaw where auth tokens were being sent in plain text.
Article is here: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/android_security_hole_a_problem_for_99_of_users_re.php
For developers, if possible, always use HTTPS and use oAuth authentications instead of authToken and shorten the length in which authTokens are stored.

How does this effect us? Are we able to pull this from Google with minimal porting or is it something that will take a harder/longer method to fix? Or am I missing something and this has already been fixed or doesn't apply to us?
Note that this only effects those that use public WiFi. You are not at threat if you use your own personal WiFi.
I would say this is fairly minor considering a stable, functional Android is more important than spending quite some time patching this. After all, I doubt many of us use public WiFi?
The GB repo is already up to 2.3.4. The article is pretty vague, just says that the fix is already in that version.
So if that's the case, the next GB release will already have it.
affects
also, good thing i dont use wifi!
The "fix" for Calendar and Contacts sync is in GB 2.3.4. The fix mainly consists of changing each app to use https instead of plain http to connect to their servers. But the google authentication API is probably used by a lot of other apps (e.g. Facebook, etc.) and each one of them would need to be upgraded accordingly.
Pretty sloppy stuff on Google's part; this authentication mechanism they used is ridiculously insecure. Why they didn't at least tie it to the phone serial number/MEID/whatever is incomprehensible. A 2 week authentication token that can be used by *any* device anywhere? Idiotic.
If you've got a good VPN going you should be safe. Too bad that running extra security layers like that also slows down throughput and increases battery drain...
Or you could avoid public WiFi altogether
Almost everyone with an Android device has a data plan/included data now.
When I'm traveling internationally I use public wifi because it's usually free, while data roaming is usually insanely expensive (like $15.00/MB...).
Guess you won't be using anymore public WiFi until you have it fixed, eh?
Curious to know if FRX07 will have this patch. Hopefully

If Google isn't patching this in Froyo (I saw no note of that in the article) I'm not sure why you would expect that...
Dunno, I guess those who want to use public wifi will have to use Gingerbread. Thought I read something somewhere that Froyo carriers will be patching it, perhaps not.
FYI, Google has fixed it server-side for Calendar and Contacts.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/18/google-confirms-android-security-issue-server-side-fix-rolling/
You can avoid this just by not syncing images, which it is not fixing yet in either 2.3.4 or server-side.

[Q] Modding SemcEmail.apk - not having much luck!

After reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086976 I thought (with no experience of working with Android) I'd have a go at doing a similar mod for the email app on the Arc, as I DESPERATELY need more than a month's worth of emails on my phone.
Unfortunately, I have of course run into problems. Firstly, the modification required to the above email app (for the Galaxy S2) was relatively easy, just a change in couple of XML files to turn 1 day into 100 days. The Sony app on the other hand just lists the "sync window" options in order, 1 to 5. After much searching, I can't find any code that converts those values into days, so I'm guessing this is what is passed to the exchange server, which knows that 2="three days" for example? In \smali\com\android\email\Account.smali it also shows:
.field public static final SYNC_WINDOW_ALL:I = 0x6
So I was hopeful that 6="All", and so all I needed to do was modify some values in \res\values\arrays.xml and \res\values\strings.xml to change 1 into 6, and so 'one day' into 'all' (worth a go, anyway!)
But then I hit another problem. After compiling, the file is considerably smaller than the original (1.32MB instead of 2.05MB). When placed in /system/app and with permissions set appropriately, email does not appear in the list of apps. I have tried using apktool and also apkmanager (compiling both as a system app and not, signed and not signed) and get no error, but email still won't appear. I installed the sony framework in apktool, so no errors on decompiling either.
Any ideas? Or does anyone else fancy a go at doing the mod?
-edit-
I've attached the version 3 SemcEmail.apk from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141898. This is also working fine with 2.3.3 and has colour coded accounts.
I tried just modifying Account.smali (swapping the 0x1 and 0x6) in this version, but even this made a file that didn't work, so there must be a problem with my compiling/decompiling...?

Hi,
I don't know if you are using again your SE phone but i'm using again a lovely mango SK17i in android 2.3.4 mod and i want to continue to use it but i have exactly the same issue with SemcEmail.apk...
When i'm using my old but pretty X10 mini pro (U20i) under a android 2.3.7 mod, i have a SemcEmail.apk which could "pop" all of my mail for my Exchange accounts ... It was great and fully working ...
Now, whatever android version used on this mango (GB, ICS or JB), the email.apk is just for one month max for emails from exhange ... i also needing to get all of my mails ... That's why i decided to stay on android 2.3.x with a fully working email.apk ...
Did you find a way ?

IIRC in the end I installed a modded ICS release that was close to AOSP (sorry, I can't remember the name), and that included the ability to sync "all". But I've not used my Arc in a long while now due to a hardware fault.

[Q] Anyone with a Galaxy Nexus could you answer a question or two for me about ICS.

Basically I need to know if the proxy settings in ICS support the use of "proxy scripts" or something of similar description.
I intend to get the Transformer Prime for use at university but really it's only useful to me if I can get the entire OS working online and not just the few apps that support proxy scripts (only found Opera to allow it so far) so I just want to know if that option is in the base OS this time around.
Thanks.

There is something called 'Install web scripts' under Accessibility, but I am not sure what it does. It asks 'Do you want apps to install scripts from Google that make their web content more accessible?'.
But I don't know what it does or why it is there.

Doesn't the config script mean it's an HTTP socket proxy? If so it can only work at the HTTP layer, which means you are pretty much limited to using browsers. An Android-wide setting would have to work at the TCP(UDP)/IP layer, which isn't concerned with this proxy.

I've just tried something. I don't need the script.
I can deselect the script and just enter a "Proxy Server" (makes more sense if you were looking at LAN settings in Windows) which just appears to be an IP/port.
