Good Morning,
Is there any way to enable USB Mass Storage on the Sprint OTA version of ICS on the Galaxy S ii Epic Touch 4G? If not how do I go back to Gingerbread as not having USB Mass Storage is a deal breaker for me. Any help would be most appreciated as I'm am freaking out.
Do through your settings its there. You have to read and look at your options ahead of time. Download sfhubs ff18 no data and it will make mass storage default when you hook it up to your comouter

Thanks for the info but it's not there
daniel4653,
Thanks for the reply. Under Gingerbread the USE Mass Storage option was under "Wireless and Network". I went and looked at the settings under "Settings", "Wireless and Network" and here is what is available.

Bluetooth Toggle

Airplane Mode
Kies via Wi-Fi

There is no option to connect my phone as a Mass storage device. Thoughts?

c2) What happened to USB Storage in ICS, how do I get the old GB behavior back?
Turn off USB debugging mode. Plug it into computer and wallah.
On my stock setup, it stays in MTP mode whether USB debugging is enabled or disabled. In GB if you turned on USB Debugging, it automatically switched to Mass Storage mode, but in ICS it stays in MTP mode.
sfhub - that solution is for rooted people. My phone is not rooted. It cannot be per work regulations. I would use MTP or whatever if it worked, but my computer sees a camera and I can only access the DCIM folder. I need to be able to access my phone. No point in an SD card if there is no way to put things on it.

ccattie, Can you be rooted for a few minutes? Just root change the setting and unroot
I don't know - I think I will try and see if MTP (it doesn't work on my phone for some reason) will work before I try that. Don't want work finding out.

My issue is with my car, I have use port and it doesnt support mtp only usb

I might have put in the Auto Root menu that it requires root, but I don't think it actually requires root. You can just try it in an adb shell, the link above gives instructions to type 2 lines to enable USB Mass Storage mode.
You can also try the switcher app referenced in the link above and in a few posts on this thread.
BTW my MTP mode shows the sdcard when I tried it on XP (I think it shows up as phone or something like that). It was just slow transferring large files.

USB debugging is located in the Developer Options in the settings. If I'm reading it correctly you said you couldn't find it. It's there at the top of the list under Developer Options.

Wait, nevermind sorry. USB debugging and mass Storage. Got the two confused lol

My MTP issue is resolved, so I am fine for now. I had to run some Microsoft updates and it made my MTP start working.

Are there any reasons why I should turn off the "USB debugging" setting? For example performance or security or battery-life or more?
Thanks again for any ideas!
i looked through my processes(with the USB on and off) and found nothing associated with it that draws power or uses memory...although there may be a process that runs while the device is connected with a computer or other usb source
Thanks for your quick response. So there is apparently no performance/battery impact. That leaves the question of security?
Is it secure to leave this setting on?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Should be, unless you set it up for wireless debugging either manually or through an app. Then its not entirely secure, though someone would need to know your ip address and have adb to do anything.

a2sd turns on usb debugging permanently?
Don't think I want USB debugging on all the time. Seems like a great new way for future malware to jump from your friend's laptop when you've just plugged in to charge.
Since I flashed a2sd (dtapps2sd-2.7.5.2-1-signed.zip) USB debugging seems to be always on. It shows in notifications, but not in the settings gui (settings -> applications -> development).
Is this normal? Anyone know a way I can stop it?
It is better to turn off USB debugging.
What you see is not normal Maybe it is just a glitch. I would reboot the phone.
You could also try to connect via adb to see whether it is really on.
Has anyone found the Samsung drivers necessary to get the native USB tethering working? I see the drivers mentioned in the user manual, but haven't gotten a hold of them yet...
Manual:
Tethering
Tethered Mode allows your computer to obtain an external data connection by using the device’s wireless data services and a wired USB connection. Tap USB tethering to activate tethering mode.
Important: If you are using your device for Tethering, you may be prompted for additional drivers. The Samsung Mobile Driver for SPH-D710 contains the ADB, CDMA, & WiMAX drivers that are required for using either Tethering (Phone as a Modem) or development tools.
- Go to SAMSUNG and visit the D710 Product page, where you can navigate to the Download Center to obtain this driver.
- The online FAQ also provide detailed information about this driver.
- A wireless data connection can be done by using the device’s Sprint Hotspot feature.
1. Press > and tap > Wireless and network > Tethering.
2. Tap USB tethering to add a checkmark and activate the feature. The USB tethering icon is displayed at the top of your screen.

However at that website, all you can currently download is the manual - no drivers. Any ideas? Anybody know where to get the drivers?
Thanks
There is a 99.9% chance that this is disabled (by Sprint) anyway without using Sprint's $30/mo official method.
Wait for root and modded roms.

Well with a USB cable plugged in, you can turn the feature on, but the computer doesn't recognize it without the drivers. I'm hoping that's a good sign...

I would be thrilled if that were the case. It isn't likely, but, bigger things have been overlooked before.
Please report back with results.
I've got a call in to Samsung tier 3 support and was promised a call back with more info, so I'll keep you apprised.
OP Delivers!
Looks like they put the drivers up. At work right now, but I'll be testing them tonight!
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D710ZKASPR
Select "Software" next to "Manuals."
Unsurprisingly, it looks like Sprint has disabled USB tethering.
I've installed the drivers, and the computer and phone successfully connect. Once USB tether is enabled, however, the phone will drop both 4G and 3G connections and throw up the following (see attached screenshot):
Error 67: Registration Failure. Your Sprint data service username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.

I know the software/ drivers are configured properly because I can pass the internet connection on to the computer when the phone is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.

Not easytether, but PDANet works.
is it free? and doesn't require root?
I haven't tried Easytether on the phone yet, but I can confirm PDAnet works and is free , although it's limited to http only and no https unless you buy the paid version. Easytether changed their application so now it has like a week trial before it shuts down.
what i hate about easytether and PDAnet is you have to have the client installed on the machine already for that to work. i liked how my EVO (rooted) had the option to USB tether on any computer... guess i gotta wait until some good ROMs come out.
Just root the phone people and install wifi tether. Works flawlessly

Yeah, I've tried rooting the phone and then using the wifi tether and it worked for a while then it stopped working. Now I can't get it to connect to the PC.
Would be nice if there was a better way of tethering for free

If you use PDANet, the phone with PDANet installed will automatically detect if the computer has the client installed or not. If it does NOT have the client already installed, it will prompt you to download the windows EXE onto the phone, and then you can install the client onto the computer from the EXE it downloads onto your phone.
It's saved me a few times working out in the field.
I have the Sprint Hotspot hack that allows 4G or 3G to tether via Wifi without the plan. I would like USB tether as well to work, is there something that uses the NDIS instead of their own client? I know both MAC and Windows work with the NDIS device sharing... If not, what's the best one that will tether 4G via USB?
FL29 radio and im running GB 2.3.6 (dont care much about the ICS / Jelly Bean unless they have both 3G and 4G tether'able via Wifi and USB)
Anybody have played with ICS and gotten the 3G and 4G thetherable at least via Wifi? Wifi thether for root didn't work for me, reason why I went back to 2.3.6 and the FL29 Odexed SpotHot fix.
Which OS, with Gingerbread just root it and download the Wired Tether apk, from the same people that make the Wifi tether .apk I really wish they re worked the code for ICS or JB
YES YOU MUST ROOT THE PHONE!!
Otherwise Custom roms all seem to have USB and wifi tethering enabled.

Forgot to mention I am on Boost, they don't offer tethering service for me
on both star burst 1.4 and viperboy i have had the problem that when plugged into usb the phone automatically connects over MTP protocol...... how do i change it to MSC?
I can't remember how since it's been a while but Google how to switch it from MTP to mass storage. You edit something in Windows, it's pretty simple and easy. This of course, sets it to default to mass storage. On the phone though you can manually do it by going to settings>wireless settings>usb settings
It should be self explanatory after that.
If you turn on USB debugging, it should disable MTP mode.
Anyone know of any setting or mods out there for charge-only mode on the VZW GN? I transfer everything over the network so PTP and MTP are useless to me (and potential security/privacy risks when using public charge stations). I understand why mass storage isn't available (well, not really since my computer supports ext3 just fine...), but I wish they had left the "Charge Only" option in place.
So i recently purchased and rooted a white gs2 and on my old device(mt4g) i was able to tether with the root. Now however i am tryimg the same with my gs2 but the network wont show. Please any suggestions/fixes will help.

Sorry. I assumed that the question was about wireless tethering, when the OP didn't state that.
Tethering is the ability to connect your phone to your computer via a USB port and share the phone's internet connection with your computer. I assume Tethering manager is the T-Mobile app that manages that connection, although I'm running Juggernaut 5.0 and there is no Tethering manager on my phone. I notice if I connect my USB cable to my phone, the USB tethering option is available in Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot.
Wi-Fi sharing, (and manager), provides the same functionality, but instead of connecting the phone to your computer via the USB port, you connect via Wi-Fi, (turning the phone into what T-Mobile calls a portable "Hotspot"). This is often times called wifi tethering, which is why I answered incorrectly. The sharing part is because you can connect up to 8 computers through the phone at the same time.
Wi-Fi sharing doesn't have anything to do with sharing files.
To the OP, if you are trying to do USB tethering, and like me, you don't have the Tethering manager app installed, just connect the USB cable between your phone and computer, and then go into Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot. and see if you can enable the USB tethering option. If so, then you should be able to USB tether without issue. If you've already done this, and it won't work, then you may want to consider installing a ROM which provides this functionality.
You shouldn't freeze, (or need to freeze), Wi-Fi sharing, and Wi-Fi sharing manager, (unless you want to do wireless tethering with an app like this one).
Good Luck..
Barnacle WIFI Tether has always been my trusty go-to. Just install and go with no freezing or unfreezing needed, and it's full of features and options for your tether network.
SGS2 T989 on Synergy kernel with beastMOD
I'm a quick learner, teach me something.
Wireless and USB tethers
For Wifi Tether [using your phone as a WiFi router to the internet: Barnacle WiFi is the best IMHO [free but phone MUST be rooted].
For USB tether: ClockworkMod Tether: Free AND DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT though you will need to download an exe and install to your computer [install Cloclworkmod Tehter open app and click ? icon and tap Download Tether For PC this will download exe to your SD connect to computer via USB cable and enable USB Drive copy file to computer, run it allow it to install and then after it is running on your computer disconnect your phone, reconnect open clockwork tether and hit the BIG icon above the USB Tether is not running text and you should see it picked up on the computer side.
If you attempt to use any form of WiFi tether app included by Tmo there is a fee for that and oh if you call tech support and try to ask about tethering they will tell you it is not allowed and they dont support it. Really, they dont want you doing for free what they can charge for, and there have been some cases of folks getting called by Tmo and asked to stop [I never have had that happen, but I don't try to use my phone as my only internet connection either so it most likely depends on how you use the tether and all.
Also, keep in mind sometimes you can install an app on your phone that kinda goes nuts and uses tons of data for no reason [could be coding issue, the way you use or set it up, etc] be sure to check to be sure it is not an app abusing your phone's connection and causing all that data usage if Tmo ever call is what I fall back on. You know how stupid us users are ;-)

sorry but wifi sharing has nothing to do with wifi tethering... I actually remove it. Tethering manager is what prevents you from using wifi tethering freely. This has been discovered like the first month the phone was released... That is why roms do not include it..
You can try it for yourself.
