First of all are there any downsides to using TWRP. I have heard of some issues with a long reboot time?
Also my original back up is on CWM is there anyway to migrate or somehow get my original back up on to TWRP?

1) i havent experienced the first thing you mentioned
2) no. they use totally different formats.
CWM just released 6.0 alpha currently in testing. I've always used CWM but I recently used TWRP on my Nook Tablet and I must say that it is pretty cool. Very touch-oriented and feels more like a GUI then a text based recovery like CWM...
However, maybe I'm just used to CWM, but TWRP seemed more complicated. CWM is pretty laid out and straight forward. Both pretty much do the same thing but I trust CWM much more then TWRP. For example, my TWRP updated and left me unable to read my Internal or External storage. It kinda screwed me for a while.
I guess both are nice and can get you to the same place. TWRP is getting updated a lot because it is still new while CWM is kind of seasoned. I use Touch CWM and I don't really have a reason to update it. If it works, why screw with it. A recovery isn't a ROM you flash to get more features. As long as it does what you need it to do, why chance screwing with it?
One of the features I noticed that would be nice is being able to name your backup. Is there a way to name backups in CWM. I tried to within a file browser one time and the backups I renamed were not working afterwards.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I have been using TWRP on my HOX and found it really easy and pretty forward without issue.. On my Nexus I used CWM and found it okay easy as well...
BUT I installed it on my Nitro HD and wound up in CWM HELL with out a way out. My phone is currently (hopefully) being unbricked as I could not get out of CWM....Yes I did a back up and when I ran it it stated system back up not found.
So on my Nexus I also just switched it up to CWM after reading other issues also.
Again not bashing CWM just not trusting it to much at this point.
As far as I know, renaming backups in CWM is possible? Try long pressing on one of the backups under 'Manage/Restore', it should allow you to edit the name.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
It is possible via a file manager just long press edit name it to what u want just the name don't put a file extention at the end ex. .zip just leave it be it sets the file name for you I had that issue before
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
You can rename a backup, it just can't have spaces or it won't restore. I just add to the end of the name so you can delete and return to original name if you have issues.

I'm just curious what the general consensus is out there between these two recovery modules. I've always used cwm rec until recently when I couldn't test flash ANY cm10 jb roms. I had to install twrp in order to flash them and it worked right away. It nice to have touchscreen controls but newer cwm's have that now too so I guess I just want to be sure I'm not losing anything or missing out on anything by leaving cwm rec for twrp .. and many say to switch anyways but what is the general feeling out there and what are you others using?

TWRP to me just has a better layout and mor responsive touch UI.. Havent had any problems with it so far not being able to flash or anything so...
+1 TWRP is overall smoother and easier to use IMO, and 0 issues so far flashing anything or restoring backups.
I've used CWM since it was available for the Samsung Captivate. Great program. I'm now using TWRP, and I like it better. It appears to be faster, quicker backups and allows for more options. TWRP feels more responsive than Touch CWM (and I paid for that program).
Two points to consider. Backups for each program are only able to be restored by that program. Meaning, you can't restore a CWM backup using TWRP and you can't restore a TWRP backup using CWM.
If you use TWRP v2.2.1, the INTERNAL SD card mount point is \data\media instead of extSdCard. That's really confusing for CWM users and really annoying general.
You can flash recovery zips in both CWM or TWRP.. I flash my .zips from the external card now that I'm using TWRP.....
Both great programs....:good:
My favorite part about TWRP is that you can enable compression on nandroid backups.

Yep, I too had been using cwm since my first Captivate...and have always enjoyed it but have also recently switched to TWRP and find it to be better and plan to use it now.as.my only recovery.
It is unfortunate but true that u can't restore backups from the others program so all.my old.cwm nandroid backups are basically useless now unless I reinstall cwm but that's OK moving forward I guess.
I too was a bit confused by the internal.SD card file.system location in data/media and still.don't understand it but as long as u know then its OK. So far it sounds like twrp is the future of recovery and more and more people are switching...and the touch function and extra options.are.nice.features.
The bottom line is as long as I am not missing out on something or losing some important functionality then I'm fine with the switch from cwm and.will.stay with TWRP but will never deny the popularity and usefulness of cwm and how it got me going in the whole.game of flashing and.mod'ing phones.
TWRP is by far the best recovery I have ever used. I couldn't imagine life without it now.

a lot of the rooting/recovery guides are suggesting to use clockwork recovery, is that just because twrp wasn't really supported back then? any issues noticed with using twrp on the sgs3?
as with all programs there is no "best" just personal preference: try one, then the other and settle on that which suits yoiur phone and needs "the best"
I tried TWRP and went back to CWM -- many others, obviously, tried and preferred TWRP
TWRP is easier & more efficient to use. Bar none.
But with that said, IMO CWM is still the better recovery for some situations. First, there is more support for CWM still.
Second, if you use a ROM's built in functionality to update itself (like AOKP has), then that requires CWM as far as I can tell.
Also keep in mind that it's easier to screw up on TWRP because it is touch-based. I've accidentally pressed buttons without meaning to. It's only a matter of time before that gets me into trouble.
I just wish CWM would remove the thousand "no" that you have to sort through before getting to a "yes". And I wish they would update it more often.
I did pay for my ClockworkMOD, btw.

Exactly the same as cwm. Except all wiping option are put together in the wipe menu, you can select multiple file to flash on after another and fix permissions is in the advanced menu.

TWRP. I like its layout, and love that I can build a stack of .zips to flash. (Not sure if CWM has that feature, won't be causing me to switch over to it.)
Encrytion and backups!
The most impressive feature of TWRP hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet.. TWRP supports flashing ROM's on devices that have been fully encrypted !
Also, it allows for backup and restore of ROMs on encrypted devices that neither CWM nor CWM Touch support.

I never understood this question. Best for what? Flashing zips every once in a while? They both do that. What do you want your recovery to do that one or the other do not do? Try them both and see which one appeals to your sense of what's best.
where can one find twrp?

Did you delete .android_secure from internal sd? I had problems till I did that. Also:
QUESTION: Why are the backups size soo small now compared to the previous cwm backups?
ANSWER: Basically on the new cwm all the data is stored in a blobs folder in the clockworkmod folder. The backups folder now doesnt hold the actual data and instead the system and data files contain links to the files in the blobs folder (with the hash of the file as its filename). When you perform another backup only the changes have to be added so it performs incremental backups instead of full backups everytime. You can still flash different roms and back them up as any new data is stored in the blobs folder with the links in the backup folder. Several backups can share the same blobs file so over several backups the total file size of all the backups will be much much smaller. When you delete a backup via cwm you can then free space of the blob files that are no longer needed to keep everything tidy and make sure that no files are stored that arent referenced to any backup. If you don't free the space then any unused files will automatically be deleted when the next backup is performed.

Is one safer than the other for the Galaxy Nexus (Verizon)? I used the Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit, and left the default options to unlock and root, so it should have installed TWRP, but I can't seem to get into it.....before I mess with it further, shall I just try to flash the ClockworkMod recoevery instead? That's what I have used for years and I am used to it.
Its mostly user preferred. I like twrp because it has way more features than cwm. It also backs up and restores faster than cwm IMO. U can also change the theme with twrp. The main thing is they both do the same thing.

Use goomanager to install the latest twrp if you're having trouble. Like the post above it's user preference but from what I've seen twrp is recommended over cwm
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I don't think you have to worry about one being not as safe as the other. They're both totally dependable if you know how to use them. The one thing I would say is that TWRP tends to be little faster than CWM, such which can sometimes hang a bit after certain using certain functions, but that's really not a difference maker in my opinion. Otherwise, each has a few features that the other doesn't, but both have all the core functions most people need.
I have always used clockwork. I tried TWRP a few times and it felt very unpolished and buggy. I was forced to go back to CWM and just decided to stay.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
The last couple of versions of twrp have been pretty buggy, so I scanned the twrp dev thread for clues to a good stable version. Settled on 2.3.2.1 and it has tested out well so far. No issues.
It's just a lot easier and faster to use than cwm imo.
I started with twrp. I just switched to cwm touch as I just recently couldn't restore my large backups with twrp. Not sure how cwm is going to work haven't restored yet but it worked fine on my x2.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
definitely TWRP, way easier to navigate IMO. i used to use CWM but once i switched to TWRP i wont go back. even with the latest versions having a few bugs still like it. all in all very smooth and simple to navigate.

I see a lot of people complaining about TWRP related issues with various versions of this recovery.
Is there any reason people don't talk about CWM around here? I've been using different versions of cwm touch and twrp ... And I'm honestly pretty happy with cwm.
Why does it appear that people avoid talking about cwm? ... If indeed it works as well as it seems to me that it does?
One reason is that a lot of people think it's better and recommend it to others. I used cwm on my old evo and was going to when I got my s3, but most people and roms were recommending twrp. I've been using it and have tried out cwm as well. For me, at least it hasn't been problematic, but I don't download them through the goo manager. As I feel like I have less control over what I'm getting (I don't even know what version I'm getting until after I download it). That, and I just don't trust the phone to download without errors even when on Wi-Fi.
Just my two cents.

Actually, having used both, I think TWRP had been the better of the two because of the ease of naming your nandroids and the fact that backups in TWRP don't take up so much space as the CWM backups do. Have you seem the crazy Blobs folder in CWM? I like backing stuff up to the PC, but the CWM backups made that process extremely painful. I don't know what happened to make TWRP so unreliable recently, but I just noticed a newer version is out: 2.5.0.0

There's nothing bad about CWM, but is 2013 and you can't rename your nands which is very important(not necesary) in a phone which date as 1970. Also the touch version looks like a '90 recovery.
But if you want a issues free TWRP go back to 2.3.3.0.

If you update from goo manager, a pop up will tell you what version you are about to install beforehand. Also the webpage that it takes you to in order to start the auto download also states the name of the .IMG which also indicates version. I know what you mean about trusting downloads from the phone though. I personally think that is the reason a lot of people have issues with twrp. I've always updated to the latest twrp and flash almost daily, but have never had to switch versions because of bugs. All versions have ran perfect for me.

I've used both for quite a while. I used to only use cwm for the longest but decided to try out twrp because of those ridiculous blobs! What's with that? So I decided to try twrp and I've stayed because of all the little features like a warnings before you wipe things you shouldn't, option to flash more than one zip at once, option to clear cache and dalvik right after flashing, etc... Plus there are some pretty major features that get overlooked. Like the built in file browser. I installed miui once and it created a folder I could not delete and keep deleted. Every time I would reboot, it would come back. Twrp file browser deleted it and kept it deleted. The only thing I don't like about twrp is the system date and time being way off.
Edit: Lol. I've edited like 5 times because I keep wanting to add more info. Also, twrp doesn't take ages to fix permissions. As long as cwm takes, I can just do it manually

UPDATE: I just upgraded from 2.3.1 to 2.5.0, performed wipes, a backup and a restore and all went perfectly smooth. The only issue was the time was 2 hours behind what it should have been for US central, so I selected 2 hours ahead and chose military time (my preference) and I'm happy.

Wow! I had already forgotten all about that! Lol!
And just fyi to the op, the one you asked about is the full firmware. If you want to flash just a stock Rom but keep everything else as is, use the link from serio22, or pick whichever rom you prefer from dev section. There should be a plain stock rom for every build, you just have to dig for most of them. They will all most likely be rooted, deodexed, and de-knoxed just so you know.

I'm very new to this.
I saw the link serio22 posted.
I chose the Based on the Official Release. T999_Official_UVUEMJC_Deodexed_KnoxFree.
Do I actually need to use the other files such as Kernels and Modems?
Thanks.
Depends.. If you updated to official 4.3 firmware before cm11 then no.. If you didn't, then yes.. And I just realized I gave you a link to an older 4.3 build.. Newest one is NC2, if you want it try to see if you can find a ROM based on it
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
I don't think I need the newest 4.3.
I'm doing this because I have a friend who currently has the same phone as I do but his screen is fully cracked. I suppose the full digitizer is.
So he's wondering if I he can use my phone temporarily to get his data out. I tried getting out from the Kies desktop software but can't access due to his password lock.
I just thought of installing 4.3 on my phone and sync his previous data from his computer to my phone.
I myself have never updated to 4.3 on my phone. I suppose he has. He doesn't remember. I don't want to change my CWM recovery. Just a quick install to 4.3 and back to CM11 after.
So you're saying I have to install the Modem and Kernel too in order I can get 4.3 working on my phone?
Thanks.
Well actually, the modem and kernel is just to get data and WiFi working, but given the circumstances, I don't think it would really matter
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
The kernel should be included in the rom. Without the modem, data connections and phone signal won't work as serio22 said. If you're running cm11 though you might want to consider updating the firmware anyway. As I understand it, the roms work much better with full 4.3 firmware. You might want to verify that though.
Just curious, how are you planning to try and get his data to your phone? Is it a nandroid backup? I can tell you a possible alternative to be able to get his current data off his device. He'd have to be using a custom kernel I think though. (A custom recovery might be enough. Can't remember for sure)
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
His phone only has been using the official firmware. No extra modding at all.
The only data he needs is his contacts, notes, and possibly his photos.
I will give it a try with these 4.3 ROMs and see if it'll work.
Thanks.

Hey... if you're just trying to recover his data why don't you use Odin to flash cwm to his phone and use the hardware buttons to do a nandroid backup?
Seems to be the easiest option to me.
You may be able to do a factory reset to get rid of the password lock while you're at it without wiping his internal sd card. From there its just a matter of plugging in to pc and copying the sd contents to desktop.

I was able to get the data he last synced with Kies before but only up to the last date he synced, which was November 2013.
I don't think I can do the nandroid backup because the screen is totally black. Digitzer is broken. The phone itself still works. I can see my desktop reading it.
Is there anyway I can fully duplicate his current data and settings to my phone now without depending on the broken screen?

Just put the same recovery on his phone using Odin and boot with hard button method (volume up, home and power buttons. Let go of power after first vibrate)
Then simply use the volume and power buttons and mirror the actions on his phone to create a backup.
Since you will be creating a backup of your phone at the same time it will be safe to restore the one you make from his phone on yours and retrieve data.

Is that safe to do with a black screen?
I can't see if I have chosen the wrong option while trying to replace the Recovery system.
Thanks.
Alternatively you can try to use adb from your computer. If you are not familiar with it just Google android adb and it should tell you all about it, how to install and use it.
You'll probably need to flash an insecure or custom kernel (should be able to do this from odin).
Then boot up the device (I prefer doing this from recovery), connect to the computer and start adb. Once confirmed its running and it sees the device, enter the following command:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15 of=\path\on\computer\data.img
This can take a while.
Then boot recovery on your phone and enter the command again, but in reverse.
dd if=\path\on\computer\data.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15
This will write the data to your device where you can then use it exactly as he had it before the screen broke.
You might think its easier to use cwm as stated above, but I figured id offer an alternative in case youre not comfortable with it.

Either way is safe. You would literally be mirroring actions on your phone.
Press a button on your phone and do the same on his.
Since cwm and other custom recoveries are all the same setup when using the same versions I've actually done that to make a nandroid backup on a completely different model phone. Specifically I used a Huawei Ascend (original) to guide me through backing up a huawei M835 without a hitch since they both use the same recovery system.

Thanks for all the tips.
I managed to enter the PIN to the broken phone and backed up the most recent data using Kies software.
I realized how much little space I have left on my phone after having restored only some of those data.
Is the old CM11 install files still taking up the space right now? If so, how can I delete them?
I already placed the backup file from CM11 to my own microSD card.
Thanks.
If youre running low on space its most likely because you either have a lot of apps installed, or just are simply using a lot with your own stuff. When you flash a rom it formats the system partition and writes the new one. Going between cm and tw, you would've had to factory reset so there shouldn't be anything left from your previous one except for your own user data on the sdcards. You just need to dig in with a file explorer and find what's eating up your space. (Your nandroid backups do take up a lot of space, up to 2gb each, so check thst you dont have multiple backups saved.)
