I have found this to be true, and two times have I had the problem of having a phone which cannot mount an sd card.
So, what is the most stable version of the recovery for my HTC Desire? In Rom Manager I have the options of versions 2.5.0.7, 2.5.1.3 and 2.5.1.1.

I'm currently using 3.0.0.5 I believe it is, works fine apart from it no longer supports the installation of ROM's/Mods that use the old style install-script.
CM 2.5.1.8 is most stable for me coz working fine, try this
Ok so if I want to use the new 3.0.0.5, all I need to do is download the .zip and flash it like I would a rom through recovery? I actually think I may be using AmonRa 2.0.1; Rom Manager is lying to me - so will i also be safe if I flashed it from AmonRa? Sorry for being cautious; I'm sick of the command prompt.
No. Using a zip file only fake flashes the recovery so it's only there for the one time and when you reboot it it's gone. You need to actually permanently flash the .img file. You need S-Off for this. You can use fastboot or the Android Flasher, either way is fine. Also Rom Manager is gay for the Desire. Don't use it. BTW, I'm using 3.0.0.5 built by Kali. I have the fake flash 2.5.0.7.zip file incase I need it.

Oh ok. Thanks, that was useful! I will probably stick with the recovery I have now and just not use Rom manager then (after all that may be the cause of my problems) , I'm not too keen on S-Offing right now.
So why would someone want to fake flash a recovery?

I root my HTC EVO about 2 weeks ago. When Unrevok ask me to install the custom recovery I answer yes (CWM V4.0.1.4). Everything went great. After that I download the Rom Manager App to manage my backups.
On the Rom Manager App when I press on "Backup Current Rom" I get this prompt "You must have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before continuing!. Install the recovery though Rom Manager First".
It is safe to install the ClockworkMod Recovery even do I have CWM V4.0.1.4 ?

Yes, rom manager will just re-flash it to the latest version.
Do yourself a favor and get Amon Ra and dump ROM Manager

Is it really that much better? I kinda like the ROM manager that came with my CM7 Rom, and I know that prefers CWM.
Or do yourself a bigger favor and install twrp.

ROM Manager has a history of not being as efficient as it promises and making mistakes in backups. It also will not do a correct wipe of your system before flashing a new ROM, which creates problems, potentially, with FC's, etc...

TWRP is not there yet. They lack the wipe boot feature which will screw up alot of ROM installs. Ra Recovery is still the way to go, plus all ROMS that have issues flashing in CWM have issues in TWRP. Once TeamWin fixes the major issues with TWRP then it will be the recovery to use. Presently it is still flawed.
If I have ROM manager can I just download and flash RA Recovery over that without having to flash the PC36IMG.zip? I'm new to this so I just want to make sure I'm doing this right.

If you have the android sdk installed on your system just boot to your bootloader and select fastboot. Then place the file in .img format in your android-sdk-windows\tools directory then rename the file to something shorter, I usually go with amonra.img. then navigate to that directory with cmd. Then type fastboot flash recover amonra.img this will flash the new recovery. However if you don't have the sdk installed then you will need the pc36img.zip format place it on the root if your sdcard and reboot the phone while holding power+vol up. The bootloader should detect the file and ask if you wish to apply the update. Press vol up to accept the update, and it will flash the new recovery. Now once you do this you will need to make all new backups because any backup made with CWM will not work with ra recovery.

bootloader mode -> reflash clockwork recovery using fastboot.

Just flashed the two .zips. SuperSU is installed, but it says that the binary needs to be updated. When it tries to update it fails, and no root apps work.

reboot, then open supersu and then update
Worked like a charm, I've got clockwork back after a little adb action and now I'm restoring some apps with titanium. Can't wait to see the development on this. Just think I almost sold this phone and bought a Galaxy S3 today, may wait a week or so now.

Is there a reason why my CWM won't stick? I fastboot a new one in and right after, I can access CWM from the bootloader menu if I don't boot into the OS yet. However, once I do boot into the OS and use ADB to reboot into recovery, it goes back to the Android with the red triangle.
What am I doing wrong? I'm usually pretty good with this stuff.

You'll need to delete that recovery from boot.p file otherwise it'll keep deleting CWM

I knew common sense told me that I would need to delete the /system/recovery-from-boot.p file, but it wasn't posted here so I didn't bother.

I needed fastboot files so i did a little research to find to different files.
1 had only 3 files in the folder(ckpv5's tutorial)
& the other had 6 files(cybervibin's tutorial) so i dont want to mess up flashing kernel.
Since these are important files.
Someone plz help me chose between which fastboot i must copy to c drive
The one with most files just run the fast boot.exe

The extra files are HTC Driver and TWRP image... those are not part of fastboot
When you want to run fastboot flash boot boot.img - the boot.img file must be in fastboot folder
When you run fastboot flash boot [folder path]/boot.img - the boot.img can be at any folder and put the right path ... but why do you want to do the hard way

No other developer is as calm as you ckpv5.
So flashing kernel is the big deal for me.
As i am doing it for the 1st time.
I wanted to flash some AOSP Roms.
So i was just curious wether i should do it or not.

Flashing any ROM either Sense ROM or AOSP ROM, you need to flash the boot.img as mentioned on OP. The ROM thread will tell you what kind of kernel/boot.img that you need. Some is on CM9 kernel, some on CM10 kernel and some is using the stock kernel or TK kernel. For CM10 they have two different kernel if I'm not mistaken, so read carefully.
Most basic thing is to flash a boot.img that is meant for that ROM.

Before flashing Rom i tried back up from recovery but it had some error.
That's too general.
You need to tell what kind of error, what is written for the error then only someone can tell you whether that's an error or something normal

It said something failed to create image.
It ocurred during backing up process.The process was completed 50 %(not accurate) & then the error.
Change your CWM to a better version or use TWRP as most people do.

I found this on one v orginal development since it is an official twrp recovery it should not have any
Problem...u can also find steps to install it on that thread...so give it a try...
But I personally use cwm no problem so far ....
Don't know about twrp but cwm installing was quite easy...

kernel flashing is made so much simpler and easier:good::good:
Never flashed a kernel via ADB(or whatever its called,dunno coz i never used it )

I hope I'm not asking a question that has been answered else where that I could find. So basically I have an AT&T galaxy note 2 that I bought with Cleanrom on and has TWRP. I have been reading up and watching videos and want to flash a new rom. However I find roms I don't see the google apps with the rom file. From what i see you need to flash the rom and then flash the google apps onto it to have the play store.
For instance, I downloaded the stable release cm-10.2-20130924-NIGHTLY-t0lteatt.zip that came out today. I put it on my phone, and i see in twrp where i can install it. However on the cynogenmod website they don't have a separate file to download for google apps. Is this like a universal file or do all roms not need these files?
ALSO, I just want to make sure it is okay to just flash the rom in TWRP and I do not need to go about this another way.
You will need to flash gapps after you flash the ROM and you boot up first time. You'll need the most current gapps package for 4.3 ROMs. Check goo they have all the gapps listed.

Do you know if it is fine to flash cynogenmod right in TWRP? I read somewhere the fastboot should be used, but it wasn't the exact same situation i'm in so i wanted to clarify before i screw anything up

Fastboot is for HTC phone flashing. Samsung flashes in a custom recovery.
Okay, I guess i'm just confused when I see things like this.
To install this ROM you will need to have an unlocked bootloader and a custom Recovery such as TWRP or ClockWorkMod installed
Copy the downloaded ProBAM to your phone.
boot in bootloader
select fastboot mod
flash boot.img via fastboot that is located in the .zip fastboot flash boot boot.img
Boot into your custom recovery
Back up your ROM
Enter custom recovery
Make full wipe "included "system"
Install the ROM
install GAPPS package
Reboot - the first boot can take up to 2 minutes
From what i can see, I can start up in recovery and just flash the .zip.. Don't see how I can get into fastboot mod in TWRP
Fastboot flash instruction should be ignored when using a Samsung device ...
Simply install the appropriate TWRP or CWM recovery to the device ....
From that point you can choose the compatible rom of your choice ...and flash the .zip from within the new recovery ...
No fancy HTC stuff here ...
Also ...it is highly recommended to thoroughly read the install instructions of each rom prior to flashing...as they often contain special instruction that can get missed ...

Those were the instructions for my device, thats why I am so nervous. If it is really as easy as just deleting cache and factory data and stuff and installing it buy the .zip i might do it a whole lot more often!!

Those are the steps, buddy. Honestly, the hardest part of the process is holding all three buttons to boot into recovery.

oiii, i'm missing something. How do i do this part? Or were those just copied instructions and i can disregard? Sorry for making this more difficult than it is.

I would like to know where you are looking at the instructions --they are not for a samsung galaxy model...
I had it on my desktop I'm on my phone now. It was a thread for the probam ROM for note 2 att version. Cant seem to find it on my phone at the moment.
Fastboot is an HTC thing. Not Samsung. Double check your sources.
