[Q] JB 4.1 OTA failure... Complete frustration - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi all...
After scouring the Q&A forum and following directions for the remedies I've found I still have no luck getting the OTA to install correctly. I know you've all heard it a million times already - OTA downloads and verifies then I get red exclamation man down DROID a third of the way through the install.
I've used Wug's toolkit to flash back to stock and all that.
Before using the toolkit I was already stock but I had unlocked my bootloader to get from 4.0.1 yakjuxw or whatever to 4.0.4 yakju.
So since then I've re locked the bootloader and am still stock and not sure what the hell to do. Pleeease help!
At this point I just want to make it so I can get OTAs with no issue. I don't need root right now but will probably do it in the future for CM10.
Here's what my about reads:
Galaxy Nexus 4.0.4
Baseband version: I9250XXKK6
Kernal version: 3.0.8-gda6252b
Build number IMM76I
I apologize in advance for any noob questions.
Thanks!

You have the wrong radio to accept the normal 4.0.4 OTA for yakju devices. You need to flash XXLA2, which also requires your bootloader be unlocked.
Also, for future reference, the bootloader can be unlocked and you can still retrieve and auto-install OTAs just fine. OTA's don't care about your bootloader unlock status. I wouldn't recommend relocking your bootloader if you ever intend to change your phone in any way in the future, as you'll just have to unlock it again.

Thanks for the reply!
Please correct me if I'm wrong...
So I can use Wug's to unlock my bootloader again but it'll wipe the phone?
And the radio I can find and download somewhere then I flash through Wug's somehow also?
I really appreciate the help

Yes unlocking the bootloader will wipe your device again.
Don't use the toolkit. Flash it via fastboot. You can download the 4.0.4 images from Google and extract the radio, or find it from one of the radio aggregator threads.
Use this thread with step by step instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
You'll need Part D, step 7 to flash the radio.

Alrighty...
I will give it a shot tomorrow!
Thanks again for the guidance.

I kept getting errors about my ICS (specifically, gps.conf) not being stock when I tried to install the OTA via CWM, and nothing I did would solve it.
You could extract the radio and flash it as above (though better way is to just google xxla2 radio file), and if that still doesn't work, do what I did.
The easy way is to just download the factory image, open the compressed file, and drag out system.img. All i did was flash over system.img, essentially replacing system files but keeping all your current data. Kind of like restoring Android OS to the way it's supposed to be.

I can't get fast boot to work.
It won't show that it recognizes my nexus when I type in fastboot devices.
Are you available on Google chat to help?

fixed my issue by using instructions i found on dottech.org. i'd post the link but i can't yet. you are welcome to PM me if you think it would help you.
thanks again for everyone's help.
i ran the OTA without a hitch.
so am i correct in assuming that i will now be able to run all future OTAs without an issue?

assuming you do not modify any system files or change radios/kernels, then yes you would get all OTAs fine.

Are you on the samsung or google stock rom? IF its a google stock rom (yakju or mysid) then you should have got an update push but if you are still on the samsung rom then there is no update from them.
Mark.
Check my guide for an unlock procedure...that includes backing your applications up.
Where can i see if is samsung or google rom?(thx for reply)

If i may, that's something even google can find the awnser.
To make a nandroid, you need cwm/twrp. To have any of those, it is understated that you need to be unlocked, and stated on first post of each custom recovery you will find that a custom recovery needs to be flashed by fastboot, or... by a custom recovery already installed.

Again, this is wrong. There is no need to unlock if he is running 4.0.2 to install CWM.
@OP:
If you are not running yakju or yakjuzs, there is no update available for you. You either have to switch to yakju (see here) or wait.
If you are running yakju or yakjuzs, and want to get the update without losing any data do this:
1) Follow the procedure here to get root access.
2) Install ROM Manager and use it to flash CWM. Use CWM to do an nandroid backup.
3) Unlock your bootloader
4) Use CWM to restore your nandroid backup
5) Follow the procedure here to update.

Flash custom recovery if you haven't already. You'll need an unlocked bootloader to flash recoveries. If your bootloader is locked, it'll wipe your phone. Unlocking bootloader is not required if a custom recovery has already been flashed. Flash a root package.
PS: I hate that the thanks button is right next to the reply button.
If you kept your bootloader unlocked after rooting the first time, simply follow the same procedure to root again (without the unlocking, of course); flashing CWM, and flashing the SU.zip, etc..
If you've locked the bootloader, you have to unlock it again, which will wipe the device.
Use my guide.
Ignoring the unlock command (as the above poster said) if you're already unlocked.
No need to even flash cwm; just boot it with 'fastboot boot recovery cwm_file.img', flash su (you'll find updated zips for 4.0.4 around), reboot, enjoy your rooted system while still being able to take otas.

I find this redundant...
Only because the recovery is rewritten upon reboot to the stock one anyway.
Well, that's also a valid point of view.
What's really redundant is that OP seems to be quite attached to his data, and he mentions root on 4.0.2, so most likely he never unlocked it, since, as we know, 4.0.2 had a root exploit.

remove CWM without data wipe?

About a week ago I decided to root my phone. My goal was to get my phone to yakju by flashing 4.1 . After nearly bricking my phone, I eventually got there. What I want to do now is be able to receive OTA updates in the future. I understand that having CWM recovery installed will cancel these updates. Can anyone help me get rid of CWM without losing my data?
Thanks

You need to flash the stock recovery back, which can be done via Fastboot. It won't wipe data.
You also need to make sure you have the proper bootloader and radio (which should've updated when you went to 4.1). Both need to be in place to receive and auto-install an OTA.

Thanks Marton.
I forget to mention that I'm a real n00b at all of this stuff,
I'm downloading the 4.0.4 "yakju" factory image from here. Is it ok to apply this using the wugfresh root toolkit? Once I flash the stock image I will be prompted to update to 4.1?
My phone details are attached.
your already on 4.1.1 with correct radio.
Just flash the stock recovery using fastboot.
No need to flash 4.04 again.

uhh. You need to follow the same guide to root as always. You flash CWM, flash the su.zip and push the superuser.apk.
But I thought you wanted stock recovery? As I said before, you can just flash it via Fastboot.
If you have adb already setup.
Adb reboot-bootloader. To get boot loader mode.
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Fastboot reboot.
Recovery.img = stock recovery you can rename the file or use the exact name in command.
It will not wipe.

Unrooting and relocking bootloader

I have a rooted and unlocked VZW Galaxy Nexus and I wish to flash the stock ROM and unroot, then lock the boot loader in order to download the OTA update, will this wipe all my data? If so, how would I restore the backed up files once I am back to stock?
This will wipe all your data.
You will still be able to update using the OTA method with or without root, so use TitaniumBackup to backup all your stuff and restore when you are back on stock ROM.
i think relocking bootloader does not wipe userdata.
that said, op, you dont need to relock bootloader to take the ota.

What ROM are you currently using? If you are running stock IMM76K, no need to re-flash the stock ROM again.
Root makes no difference, neither does an unlocked bootloader.
See screenshot, I just wanted to get the official update without too much hassle.

Based on your screen shot, I can point you in the right direction. Although you may think it is a lot of hassle, it isn't. Follow the steps to flash mysid IMM76K in the "flash" link in my signature. Then you should get prompted for the OTA -- if not, follow the steps in the "update" link in my signature to manually update your device (after doing the procedure in the "flash" link). If things are not clear, have a read of the "basics" link.
I don't advocate using shortcuts, as people come back when the next update comes around asking similar questions yet again.
Locking the bootloader will not wipe your data. I did it before with no problems whatsoever.

I mean if he flash stock, phone will be nuked.
Beamed from my Grouper.
Not sure what you mean by "nuked", but I did the OTA update successfully after reverting back to 4.0.4 and unrooting. I am stil unlocked, but when i was proceeding to reroot, everything seemed to work, but when i went to the superuser app to regain root access, it fails. Also, not sure if it is a related issue, but when i try to save a screenshot or take a picture, the picture will not save to the gallery, it says "Cannot capture screenshot, storage may be in use."

What i mean is if you flash a stock image that you downloaded from Google Dev website, your virtual SD card will be wiped if you flash the userdata.img(this is your /data/ i believe).

unlocking 4.1.1 OTA update?

Hello all,
Just did an OTA update to JRO03O after unrooting and relocking my phone. Then went to Root Toolkit 1.5.3 to root and unlock the new ROM but the only option there was JRO03H to select for my Verizon phone. Can I select this "H" version (or the last choice, which is MYSID-TORO;Android*.*) to root and unlock it? Or must I wait for my specific build to appear?
Do you use fastboot? I avoid toolkits like the plague because you learn nothing from them. Try using fastboot to flash a custom recovery(CWM or TWRP), then just flash the latest superuser zip from clockworkmod.
Edit: don't quote me though, the only time I've ever been stock is the first 30 minutes owning my Gnex. I just bypass the rooting process by flashing a custom ROM.

hmm never really used anything but toolkits, could you point me to a tutorial on how to do the fastboot / superuser? I thought that you'd need to be rooted before you could install a custom recovery / superuser on your phone. I also thought that on any phone that you have to unlock the bootloader before doing anything with recovery as well. could you or someone enlighten me?
thanks!
Shukero
Here ya go, this is the tutorial I used in the beginning, still gold to this day. And you don't have to be rooted to flash a recovery from the bootloader, boot straight to recovery, then flash a custom ROM. No root needed. The bootloader does need to be unlocked first though but there's nothing to it. Just follow this guide.
