Pick your Otterbox!
Description:
So we all know Otterbox has decided to release their line for the Samsung Galaxy SIII.
This means adequate protection for your phone even for the most paranoid users! The
Otterbox cases have been known to be designed with the best quality in mind. Today
a poll will be started for the Otterbox cases for people to list their favorite, why it is there
favorite and concerns they may have with the case. Information for the cases will be provided
below with an image of each case!
Case #1: The Commuter!
Built with your hectic life in mind, the Commuter Series Samsung Galaxy S3 case provides protection against
oopsies and accidents without being too bulky for your pocket or purse. The Commuter Series offers two layers
of protection for your highly connected lifestyle. The durable silicone inner layer snugly cushions and absorbs
the Galaxy S3 from impact while the polycarbonate outer layer provides solid impact protection without being too
big or bulky. Silicone plugs cover the main openings of the Galaxy S3, including the volume controls, power button,
headphone jack and charging port. The Galaxy S3 Commuter Series case maintains complete functionality of the
device so you can stay connected while being protected. It’s not just a case. It’s an OtterBox.
Case #2: The Defender!
The Defender Series Samsung Galaxy S3 case offers three layers of protection so you don’t have to fear the inevitable
oopsie or accident. The two-piece polycarbonate inner layer snaps together around the device to form a secure foundation.
The inner layer includes a built-in screen protector that prevents scratches while interior memory foam pads cradle the
device to provide added shock absorption. The outer layer is made up of rugged silicone that wraps around the inner
layer to absorb impact. The Defender Series comes with a ratcheting belt holster that can also double as a viewing stand.
Case #3: The Defender with Camo!
Sport your favorite camo pattern for your Samsung Galaxy S3 with our Defender Series Realtree case. With three layers of
rugged protection, you don’t have to worry about dropping it. The two-piece polycarbonate inner layer snaps around the device
to form a secure foundation. The inner layer includes a built-in screen protector that prevents scratches while memory foam
pads cradle the device to provide added shock absorption. The outer silicone layer wraps around the inner layer to complete
the case and also absorb impact. The Defender Series comes with a ratcheting belt-clip holster that can also double as a viewing stand.

Bought the Commuter, returning it tomorrow, the side buttons are a nightmare to push! Put my phone back into the Speck candyapple case and the buttons are smooth as silk. This a deal breaker for me.

i hope the # 2 case is a little better because i have the #2 case in the mail i hope i dont have to return it
I have the Commuter. As cc999 said, the side lock button is a nightmare to press. You have to press it hard. No exaggeration. Thankfully the screen can be unlocked using the hardware home button. The volume buttons are hard but their not that bad. Funny thing is I had the Commuter on my Galaxy S2 and it was an amazing case. Used to drop the phone on purpose because I could, lol.

I had the Commuter and swapped it for a Trident Aegis. I got used to the Aegis with my Epic Touch, being able to actually feel the power button press.
Otterbox cases are really ugly, and they look big and bulky.

+1 (or is that -1?) from another dissatisfied Commuter. Incipio saved the day for me.

Yeah,... that Aegis on the Epic Touch is a nice match, I have to agree. The Aegis was the first and only case I put on the S2. After my struggles with Otterbox and the flappy-n-loose fit on the Evo 3D and the original Evo, I decided to do Trident. Not a big fan of the Aegis styling tho,... kinda reminds me of all the glass figures at my elderly aunts house if you know what I mean. Those uneven sides and not one corner looking like no other styling was a bit too much for me. I also noticed from the pics, that Aegis is now doing the same thing that I thought was not very smart on the part of Otterbox. They've decided to do away with outer shell support for the silicon inner layer on the top and bottom of the phone. I can almost predict that the silicon top-n-bottom will stretch and loose their fit after a few weeks,... just like it did with the Otterbox. I think Otterbox learned from that and on their S3 Commuter, designed the outer shell to give symmetrical support for the silicon inner layer on all four sides. What scares me now is all the not so good reports about how they thought out protection for the power button and volume rockers. If things are as bad as I'm reading, the Commuter that's on its way here will be returned. I have the Defender on S3 #1 now and it's a solid 'Go'. Hoping to dress S3 #2 in the Commuter.

Yeah, they are a little industrial looking. But that's a good look for me. They're not as bulky as they look once you get it on. Internet pics don't help either with that feeling,... nor does seeing the Defenders on all our friends iPhones and older phones. I've seen a couple Defenders on evo 3D's and man were they were massive. But looking at the Defender on a S3's is so different. Now if you wanna really see bulk, check out the Kraken or anything from Ballistic!

I have the commuter but I'm looking for something else because of the buttons, so stiff. I mostly keep my phone in my pocket at work so I need something slim but durable. Any recos?
I would go with a bulkier case. The phone has to look like a brick.
I got the Commuter (black) because I don't have any use for a holster Loving it. Only sticking point is I have to press the power/volume buttons pretty hard since it's basically a rubber knob overlay on top of the actual keys.

I'm having a hard time deciding which case to get. I used to have a Seidio Innocase, but the rubber outside became too loose and stretchy for my liking.
Has anyone had both? What are your feelings on them? My main concerns are:
- sturdiness - will the case start falling apart/become loose like the Seidio one?
- size - i understand a little bulk comes with protection, but which one is the smaller case of the two? I want to be able to shove it in my pocket without too much work.
Anybody have a comparison on the two? I tried searching around, but couldn't find any comparisons of them.
I bought the Defender. Put it on my phone and took it off after 10 seconds. sold it on eBay. I've had the Otterbox Commuter which I loved, but yesterday I got the Trident Cyclops and it is awesome! The problem with the defender for me is the entire outside is silicone, i hate that. It doesnt seem like it would stay on the phone very well either. I'm considering purchasing the Ballistic as well just for fun, but the Trident Cyclops has very good protection. I can see it taking a very large drop no problem. I also just found out that they sell 10 different skins for the Cyclops, so you can dress it up all sorts of ways.
edit: post number 420 for me! woohooo
edit 2: oh dang, they also sell a holster for the Cyclops? man this case keeps getting better and better!
ballistic all the way
If you want maximum protection, then the Ballistic is the only way to go. Only thing is the Ballistic also adds the most bulk of any case out there. It's definitely NOT pocket friendly, especially with the outer silicone layer on it. Without the outer silicone layer, it's about the same as the other rugged cases.
When I first got my evo at radio shack the employee had the otterbox and I didn't like the feel or looks so I tried the ballisitic case and I have been happy with it.
I just got the Cyclops from Trident Got to say not complaints here
Trident Cyclops. I got the limited edition green (i doubt it's actually limited edition, but it matches my theme).
It's sturdy, it feels good, it adds a little more bulk than otterbox but less than defender and it protects well. Good stuff, plus they changed the packaging to where the PET protector the camera and LED lights are optional so no blue glow when you take pictures with flash.
100% I haven't taken it off since I got it except for battery pulls. I highly recommend it. Look up a review on youtube.
Holster
Can anyone tell me if the Ballistic HC will fit the Holster without the optional outer silicone cover. I ask because in the video on their web site they put it in the holster with the silicone cover on.
Otterbox shouldn't even be an option.
There are extremes only. Otterbox and Seidio are extremely bad in my experience. Ballistic and Trident are awesome.
to be honest the otterbox commuter series has been my favorite case i have ever had. it is pocket friendly because it has the hard plastic on the outside and silicone on the inside. I have had my otterbox for awhile and I love it. I have a lifted F-150 and have dropped my evo getting out of my truck several times. this is essentially dropping from about 5 and a half feet and my case has yet to be damaged let alone my phone. these drops have destroyed screens on other phones but it has been safe in my otterbox. the next biggest plus for me is that i never have any issues with getting the phone in and out of my pocket.

Ballistic
Awesome build quality
Kickstand snaps off but can be put back on(so far)
Outer layer is removable for varying degrees of protection
Beautiful
Tougher and pricier feeling materials
Otterbox
Feels very flimsy overall
Kickstand breaks off
Ugly
Materials don't feel as good as they do with the Otterbox for iPhone
I think I remember on their facebook page...Otterbox admitted that they used a completely different factory for the Evo...but that doesn't explain the poor design...just explains the huge downgrade in feel...possibly different(cheaper)plastics.

I feel your pain....i am in the same delima. I think either the otter or ballistic. I have a friend who has the otterbox defender, i like it. The outer shell seems a little cheesy when you take it on and off, but actually feels ok once you get it on and get the front part of the silicone shell into the front groves of the hard case. Wish I had a friend with ballistic. The only issue I see right now with the ballistic is the size and the holster, I can't find pics of it in the holster without the outer silicone shell on. I can't see who now but someone (i gave thanks) did reply and say the ballistic would work in the holster without silicone shell.
The trident hasn't got my interest yet, I continue to read......................
Yes it does fit in the holster without the outer silicone layer (I have one) The Ballistic Case is AMAZING!

I just had my second Otterbox holster break. They replaced the first one without batting an eye. I haven't had a chance to call about #2, but frankly I'm not sure if I want to risk it. Fortunately the phone fell out while I was driving my car, not my motorcycle, but I'm not sure I want to risk it again.
So far it's the only case I've tried.
I hate to buck the trend, but I really like the cheap TPU eBay cases. I know, I know, some of us think you need to spend a lot to pamper your Cappy, but I do have my reasons.
They are cheap. I'm big on spending less than $5 for things.
TPU is a great blend of rigidity and pliability. I think silicone is a touch too soft to disperse impact energy, and hard plastic transmits the energy to the phone and often breaks in the process.
They are slick, but easy to hold. I carry my phone in my pocket. I think holsters look kinda dumb. TPU is generally very smooth and slides in and out of a pocket very nicely.
They are thin. Many of the hard molded cases turn your sexy-thin Captivate into a non-sexy blob, cool molded patterns notwithstanding. Lots of the silicone cases have kind of a shapeless look that I don't like.
I've been using a plain black TPU case for a while now, and I get lots of comments on how thin my phone is. I've also dropped it several times with no ill effect, except a less shiny spot on one corner of the cover. No complaints, and I really have a hard time imagining how the expensive ones are better.
TPU is nice and much, much better than silicone. I wish otter/seidio/trident would use TPU. I have a thin TPU case (body glove) and like it alot. Its just sometimes I want the thicker, two layered plastic and rubber case which is why I also have the seidio active.
The first case I bought was the pdair aluminum which would be a nice case but it kills the cellular signal so I can't recommend anyone buy it. Wifi works fine so if I ever travel somewhere I won't have service I plan on using it.
I like my Bodyglove case just fine. I've used it since the launch of the cappy and couldn't be happier. It's more rigid than silicone and less bulky than the otterbox. I've dropped my cappy numerous times on pavement, and as long as a jutting edge doesn't hit the screen it won't break. There is a slight lip on the front of the body glove that makes it so the screen doesn't hit when dropped on a flat surface.

Last I checked, Otterbox only has the Commuter for the S2, ATM.
Body Glove
I have bought like 5 cases for my cappy, the Otterbox, Body Glove, a slim hard plastic snap on case and a full hard snap on case.
In the end my 2 favorites are the Body Glove and the Slim snap on that snaps only on the back.
The otterbox case is nice, it is just too bulky. I use the Body Glove daily because it protects from impact, is not bulky and slides in and out of the pocket easy.
Moving forward I am all about the TPU cases.
I use this case http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BD2-HK3SSCAP-BK
Look on ebay, I've seen these for $35. Dropped the phone twice and there's no damage on the phone at all.
I use the otterbox commuter with an invisible shield screen protector. I work with concrete and often get my phone cpvered with dust and grime. The case gets really dirty but when I remove it the phone is still perfect. I would take this case over the bulky defender version.

Ok I like how the commuter case is somewhat slim and it maintains the original form factor of the phone giving it a lower profile but giving it great protection. I also like how the Aegis has more options for color although it looks a little thicker. Which one should i go for?

I have had the commuter for a couple of months and it is a great case. I've dropped my inc2 a couple of times with no ill effects. The only complaint I might have is that the headphone jack is a little recessed, so a 90 degree plug doesn't work too well, but a 45 and a straight plug work just fine. Pretty minor complaint.
I like that the seal of the case is enough that I don't get crap built up around the edge of the screen and in the ports like tends to happen with cheap cases.
I use an invisible shield brand screen protector (the only kind I will use - lifetime warranty and no bubbles! Harder to put on...).
If you look on Amazon, you can get the case for about 1/2 price or less, and the shield for the same amount. Including shipping, it came to less than 40 for my setup.
I use the commuter. Without any screen protector. I just love the feeling of the screen. Nothing getting in the way ya know? It is gorilla glass, but take your chances of your own accord.

Commuter
I bought the Otterbox Commuter from Newegg, and so far I like it. It slips out of your pocket really easily because the back is slippery, more slippery than the back of the phone in my opinion. I wish the silicon was tighter on the phone, but it is still tighter and a better case than my old incipio.
I wouldn't get the trident I just took mine off and threw it in the trash after busting 3 of the belt holsters and having to constantly put the thing back together. I ordered a seido off of amazon.
The Commuter felt too slippery for me. I always felt like my phone was going to slip out of my hands unless I used two hands.
Best? Worst?
Pros and Cons?
Obivously it's a little early to have a ton of info on each (at least in the states) but I'm sure this thread will prove useful as more people at theirs.
I didnt make it out of the parking lot with the Otterbox. It's a great case and I feel like I could throw my phone off a building without any damage. However I didnt notice how much girth it added to the phone until I tried to put it in my pocket.. things a tank. Easily doubles the width, so keep that in mind if its important to you.
I have the casemate toughcase. Originally i liked it but now not so much. The silicone was a dust and pocket lint magnet and it started peeling up corners of my zagg screen protector. It just didnt fit right but i have the gsm gnex which is a tad thinner. I tested the otterbox in a vzw store tonight and i hated it. Everytime i touched the screen the protector made little tap like noises because it wasnt touching the screen. Again....i think its because the otterbox is made for the LTE nexus. I have the diztronic tpu case in matte black and also the smoke color and ive been happy with them so far. They also do not add any bulk. I have to wonder why anyone would want to get a thin and light phone only to add a bulky looking case?
I have the casemate tough case, I don't mind the dust trapping cuz it really doesn't do anything. I have the gsm version, the top and bottom part is a tinyyyy bit loose, but also doesn't bug me. The thickness is perfect and i think its as much protection as i need so... I hope that helps :0
I have case mate tough and pop case, and I highly recommend the pop case, the design, protection, feel, it sums up as the best case for me...I use otterbox for most of my devices, and the case mate pop case does not lack any of the protection compare to otterbox

I've had the Pop for other phones. It's a nice case, my only complaint about that series is the side rubbers. They tend to wear off as time goes on and starts becoming loose.
Provides excellent protection though.
I don't have the phone yet (ordered online) but I bought the incipio case for it earlier today. Anyone else tried it on their LTE GNex? Thoughts? I didn't see a Otterbox case for it at the Verizon store.
I got the incipio case with mine when I picked it up earlier. So far, I like it, its real tight fitting and doesn't add a whole lot of thickness. Only downside is the silicone around the edges is a lint magnet while in the pocket

Sedio has some really nice cases. I have had one for nearly 2 years now for my original Droid. It has protected it well although it did crack eventually after many drops.
I also bought the sedio car mount/charger and really liked that as well.
Sedio is a bit pricey... 2 years ago the car charger mount was at least $50 and the case was $20-$25. It was a very thin form fitting case that is plastic but has a almost rubbery feel to it. Very tough and it barley added any thickness to my Droid which was amazing. Guess that is why it was so pricey.
I got the shell holster charger combo when I ordered my GN yesterday... waiting for it to arrive... as patiently as I can!
I tried the Otterbox in the VZW store on my GNex -- certainly looked industrial and protective, but it made the phone huge. The Incipio seemed like a good compromise - the rubber inner part goes on easily, and the plastic snap-over layer keeps it nice and snug to the phone. The egde protrudes just enough so that you can place the phone glass down without the glass touching a table - perfect.
No screen protector yet - and I may not. It may not be Gorilla Glass, but it's been shown to be "fortified", and I won't put it in my pocket with keys or change... The Incipio seems like a good choice so far...
Anyone have a link for the black Case-Mate Pop case? I can only seem to find the white one.
EDIT: Nevermind, I'm an idiot

So I've already ordered the Case Mate Tough, because I didn't know there was a Pop for the Nexus yet.
They don't show it listed on the actual Case Mate site Nexus page.
What are the differences between the Tough and the Pop?

I got the incipio case with mine when I picked it up earlier. So far, I like it, its real tight fitting and doesn't add a whole lot of thickness. Only downside is the silicone around the edges is a lint magnet while in the pocket

I have the Otterbox Commuter for my Razr and it looks like the silicone shares the same properties of picking up everything in my pocket. lol
I really like the Case-Mate Tough Case which I had with my HTC Sensation and it didn't pick up as much lint as the Otterbox commute or now possibly the Incipio.
I can't wait for my phone to arrive so I can finally try for myself.
Thanks!

If you google Seidio, Case-mate, and Otterbox... you will find lots and lots of people complaining about their Seidio cases. I have owned a few and will not buy from them again.

Commuter or Defender?
the question is which of these fit the GSM Version well.
Diztronic only $10 from eBay. Perfect fit and no bulkiness added.
I have the GSM version as well

First of all, i would like to thank the people over at Trident (www.tridentcase.com) for sending this case out to me.
Packaging - The box is pretty simple. Shows the product and the different colors it comes in. Black, Red, Pink, Green, and Blue. i will be showing off the black model. Inside the box comes a screen protector kit, which includes the screen protector, microfiber cloth and a applicator/squeegee card. The case retails for $49.95.
Case - The Kraken AMS case is a heady duty 3-Layer case which features a shock absorbing silicone, a polycarbonate plastic shell, rubber dust covers over the microphone and speaker, rubber covers over ports (charger and headset), and holster. The silicone part, or Perseus can be used as a stand alone case on days that you don’t need maximum protection, but will still give u good drop and scratch protection. The two polycarbonate shells cover the silicone to make the case durable. The case has a nice lip around the screen for a lay on table design. One accessory that the case comes with is a really durable metal kickstand. They also have other Kraken accessories which make the case more usable in everyday life. such as an AMS Bike Clip, AMS Tripod Mount, AMS Headphone Organizer, AMS Seatbelt Clip, and AMS Windshield Mount.
Thoughts - My thought on the case are it is made of very high grade materials. everything fits. cutouts are precise. I’ve only had the case for a few hours and i love it. the silicone is way much better than the otterbox defender. it feels of quality and doesn't attract lint. the volume and power buttons feel better than the naked buttons to me. the kickstand is SOLID and does its job great. the holster is just as heavy duty as the case and rotates so you can wear it comfortably. i will update the in a few days to give more opinions...
Pics - I will have pics of the phone with the case tomorrow, as my nexus is my only camera at the moment.

Conclusion - I think the case is well worth the $50 you are paying. you are getting a heavy duty case that can be used as a lightweight case also that provides an ample amount of protection. I would definitely recommend this case to anyone who is looking for an overall great case that will add bulk to your device.
if u feel i left something out or want to ask a question. go ahead. thanks.

Can't wait to see some pictures of the phone inside the case.
Some questions...
First, how do the two plastic pieces (the front and back) fit together?
On my otterbox defender, they just snap together with some tiny little clips and after about two drops 3 out of 4 clips are already broken so the only thing holding them together is the silicone cover that goes on the outside. I'm hoping the kraken is a lot more rugged in that aspect... The otterbox is great at protecting the phone but the case itself is already trashed after a few drops which isn't cool.
Second, how bulky is the kraken? It looks bulkier than the otterbox defender, especially on the sides since it looks like it has a ridge sticking out from either side of the screen. Does it feel good in the hand? My defender definitely makes the phone about 30% thicker which makes it less comfortable to hold but I've gotten used to it. Don't know how I'd feel about the ridges on the Kraken however.
Anyway thanks for the review.

hmmmm. might just scratch, but not blend.
the two plastic pieces fit together nice and tight. the top and bottom are snap together. but the sides are actually placed in slots, it can be slight difficult to remove if u don't have nails. but i see that as a good thing. the Kraken would take some time to show wear and tear.
it may b just a tad bit bulkier, but the grip is a for sure thing. the poly carbonate is not glossy but isn't matte. it's sort of in between but doesn't show finger prints. the sides have ridges for better grip as well. i actually thought the defender felt great in hand, maybe because i have small hands tho.
few more pics.

the case fits the GSM extended battery with no problems at all.
Does this case make it hard to press the volume and power buttons? And it seems to cover up the notification light at the bottom doesn't it?
the buttons are the best thing on the case IMO. and the notification light isnt covered.

HI, just wondering if you wound up getting the 2000mah battery afterall and if so, how well it fits.
if it fits 100 percent with extended battery im a get one to
i recently bought one it appears the notification light is 40% block.. i'm using the standard battery gsm version could that be the reason i wonder
I have the same case with the extended battery (Sprint) and everything fits perfectly. The notification light is about 50% blocked but I dont use it anyways so it did not bother me much. The notification bar is easy to pull down with no interference with the top of the case like with the otterbox. The case can take a beating I have drop tested survived a 12ft drop. Even though it adds bulk because it is hard polycarbonate on the outside it makes it really easy to get in and out of pockets even with tighter fitting jeans.
Also if you have a Costco or Sams Club near by you can pick up the case for $30 instead of $50.
Seidio convert is better.. options for all gnex models and batteries

I would recommend it if you are looking for a case that offers similar or even more protection than the Otterbox Defender. The case adds quite a bit of bulk to your phone though so that may turn off some people.
Throughout the work week, usually switch between the Kraken, Otterbox Commuter, and the SGP leather pouch. The Kraken will be used only if I have to go out to do field work.
The Commuter is only used if I feel like I don't want to use the SGP pouch. Otherwise I end up using the SGP pouch most of the time on the slower days of work where I'm just stuck in the office.
I'm leaning toward the Kraken because I've read a couple of story about how the Otterbox defender was scratching phones.
I have a commuter right now but I need something more rugged for work and also to protect my GNex from my crazy kids
saintpanache
If that's the case, the Kraken would be a good purchase for you. My Kraken case has held up well when I drop my phone when I'm out doing field work. Very durable and well worth it!
