The Big Signature Problem - About xda-developers.com

There's no restrictions on size of signatures. 1 or 2 line signature is fine, but most of users write big essay here. Even big photos can be found in signature.
Signatures just make the thread ugly. They just reduce the value of screen real estate. And, they make the webpage heavy, too.
The Awkward Situation: The post is 1 line long, but signature is 100 lines long.
There must be restrictions applied to signature size. I think, user profile is great place to enter big details.
If not, atleast, allow users to hide all signatures with one click.

This topic has been discused a number of times and the outcome is always the same, if you think someone has got a signature that is to big then you can report them. I feel that this will never change, as signatures sevrve a good purpose if used in the correct way, penalising everyone because some members go over the top with their Sig, i feel is a wronge way to go.

What s.d. said is correct. Also, you can hide all signatures under your Edit Options page. Technically you uncheck the box to display them, not "hiding" as such. If you use Chrome you can also use Archer's XDA toolbar to selectively hide signatures and more.

And it's that scale of size I believe the OP is referring to, and think any mod seeing sigs of that size should have a word. The irritance of seeing such signatures is on par with posts that have quoted 10 scroll posts to reply with one line.

Information like what phone, ROM, baseband one is using should be tucked under the username in posts, like how they categorise information in Personality Cafe. Signatures should be limited to a certain overall length. Oversized images should be automatically resized.

Possibly to the users screen size. I've got 1920x1080 display on my laptop as I suppose quite a lot of members do so what might be gigantic to some is normal for others, although the screenshot above is still over the top no matter what screen size anyone has.

If a users signature is too big just PM the user and tell him about it.
If he disagrees you can PM a senior mod who can trim it down.
I usually suggest the use of
tags if there's lots of information.
example
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

While this is definitely not a solution to the root of the problem, I have a temporary workaround for users with overly bloated sigs...
There's a browser extension called Stylish (Chrome | Firefox) that allows you to load custom CSS rules based on the current browser URI. I've set the following rules, among other minor tweaks of course... This way large sigs get scroll bars.
Code:
.postContent .postsig {
max-height: 250px;
}
I don't want to have to miss out on potentially helpful and interesting info in logical people's sigs just because there are people who think their sig is their own personal copy of Pinterest...

I have done this as I view on a Netbook and the scrolling was awful, I click on a user and view their sig in the profile if necessary.

I would always recommend hide tags to anyone with images in their signatures. They allow you to have all your content, without forcing everyone to see it, every time you post.
Archer's toolbar was also mentioned, and this is an excellent option also, allowing you to hide the sigs of selected users, not just all or nothing
And yes, if you see something ridiculous, either report it, or send a PM to your friendly Forum or Senior Mod. We're only too happy to help

[request]XDA-DEV Thread Button Link

Hi xda-dev,
I just thought if we could have us thread owners to have a standard button design for a specific thread that we can use/link in our blog post or websites?
Just a thought ..

I think that's a great idea. But could you clarify: Are you speaking of the same basic concept on news sites where various social-media icons are avail to auto-repost? (twitter, digg, etc)... Or do you mean a button that performs the action of copying the thread's link & title to the clipboard, then being able to paste it anywhere on your own site, manually, into a blog post etc?

SLIGHTLY OFF-TOPIC:
I'm WAY behind the curve in using twitter, and how it integrates with what seems like 1000 different twitter-based apps... And twitpics, i'm even less clear on how and WHEN to use it, and if it's used WITH twitter, or a parallel service to twitter for just sharing photos in real time.
ON-TOPIC
So I'm not clear if your posting that image on twitpic is literally an example what you want to be able to do, or are you saying there are apps for either phone or desktop computer that will generate a template graphic as well a specific thread title linked? So, in your picture, is the thread title generated as part of the graphic itself? Or is the thread title displayed in HTML on top of the template graphic?
I am really confused but I like the way it looks! please explain further...
Okay, so now I see this, in your prior sig file.. and I see that it is a graphic that gets generated with the title of the thread rendered as part of the image... so i just have never seen these used -- but I love the idea...
So for this example here:
tell me how that gets generated -- at http://www.twitstamp.com ? and then when you apply that generated graphic, how do you also code the link to the thread, in this example?
even more confused and feeling so behind the times !
well whaddayaknow -- this looks like a pretty cool web app ! ---
so are you speaking of ...
(1) You're here at XDA-devs, and you're on, for example, this very thread...
(2) You'd like to see a simple small graphical button, as part of "thread tools" or somewhere within the thread page layout, that when you click on it, it grabs the Title of the thread, and the link, copies it to pasteboard...
(3) then you go to a site like, for example, TwitStamp.com, and insert what's on the pasteboard into the "input box" at Twitstamp...
(4)... thereby generating a graphic with link that can be embedded anywhere on a webpage etc, exactly as you would grab embed code from a YouTube video, or from a photo at photobucket.com, stuff like that?
(5) Is this kind of small-file-size "picture status" thing being rapidly used as a way to post updates, but using twitpics? So that after you generate the graphic, you post it to twitpics? And those who subscribe to your feeds can see "oh cool, that sounds like an interesting thread, i want that for my phone"... and so they would click on it and link to the thread here at XDA?
even more confused by all the permutations of pasting what where... hah hah.
Is this what you mean exactly, or is it close, or is this just one of many examples of what you are envisioning?
sounds & looks interesting....

[REQ] Rate posts and filter by rating, so you can filter out off-topic posts

Dear admins/website developers,
It would be a really nice feature to be able to rate a post.
-1 off topic/offensive
0 off topic/irrelevant
+1 on topic
+2 on topic/informative
+3 on topic/must read
Something like that. They use it on the dutch website tweakers.net and it's really handy.
By filtering out the off topic posts. You have a much cleaner view of the thread.
The user is free to choose the level of rating. For example I wan't to read the "thank you's".
I set the viewing level to 0 offtop/irrelevant.
But if I would be a developer I would set it to +1 or +2, so I could easily read up on new developements users have made or requested.
Ofcourse the rating of the posts has to be done by users themselves.
And they themself have to be rated as well (their credibilty).
If one user A rates a post -1, but five other users rate that post +1. The credibilty of user A goes down.
I think this is a really nice way to clean up a thread.
Popular rom threads get spammed so fast with "thank you's" and/or questions, that there's hardly keeping up with the actual developing discussion, bug reports, fixes, etc.
Cheers,
Daan

I know but I don't think it's appropriate to report a "thank you" post
What I meant was, viewing a thread on different levels.
Normal, informative and developement. Or somethng like that.
Now that I think about it you could indeed skip the -1 and just report offensive posts to the mods.
Mods will still have to remove it. Not a big deal ofcourse, probably takes 2 minutes.
But with the system above that is no longer necessary. Users become the mods in a way.
Cheers,
Daan

Nothing wrong with reporting "Thanks" posts in my opinion. I do it all the time. Dev threads get cluttered up enough without having newbies clutter it up with "Thanks" or "ETA?".

That's exactly what I mean.
Wouldn't it be nice if you, the user, could mod the post.
That way you won't have those annoying cluttered up threads anymore.
The posts are still there, but you filter them out to your own needs.
I think the biggest issue with your idea (which I like, btw) is the server overheads. You're basically asking for every single thread to have its own dedicated view. I've seen similar types of features in sites like Stack (I use Stack Overflow quite a lot) and it works very well for them, but they're not forums - they're purely Q&A sites and they discourage discussion. While that difference is not particularly pertinent to your suggestion I do think you're thinking of this site more along their terms.
The mods are there for a reason, and as tedious as it may be, cleaning threads is one of their tasks. Just report things that are out of place.

A quick fix would be to use the XDA Toolbar for Chrome. You can collapse posts, sigs, and images. It's probably going to be more to your liking than us telling you that XDA isn't going to implement this feature.
[20-Dec-11] XDA Toolbar for Chrome v1.7
I agree with the report button... Cause a mod can review it to see if it needs to be removed.. If they did it the way your talkin about.. Things could get messy since some new guys or someone wanted to be not a nice person could just down rate your thread for no reason at all... Which does happen from time to time.. I have no idea why when a bunch of others love it.

New users should not be able to mod posts yet.
There should be a rating system for the users themselves, as stated in the first post.
If user A rates posts -1 while 5 others rate +1, then eventually user A won't be able to mod posts anymore.
Well, I guess I'll have to use the report button more often and more aggressively.
It was just an idea.

Daan

Whahaha, I can see the connection.
Nice work on the toolbar!
kind of similar request: how about keeping it simpler, and have the ability to filter a thread so it shows only "thanked" posts? I think this would be extremely useful, and although I know very little of programming, it shouldn't be difficult? This way for example if I'm in a custom Android ROM thread, instead of searching or reading through posts, you just filter out the questions and other "less useful" posts and get straight to the answers or the more useful/interesting ones.
Sorry if this had been requested before (or if there already is the ability to do it..... ) but just saw this thread and thought I'd jump in

The post rating system only exists in the Galaxy Nexus forum at the moment and has been there a while now.
I'm not too sure about it though because I figured there would be buttons to click to rate the post up or down.
I couldn't understand how simply showing that message (one in screenshot) would solve anything.

[Q] XDA 2010 Theme

Ive been using the xda classic theme bc I can actually see peoples quotes in posts. When I was using xda 2010 the quotes are really hard to distinguish from the actual post.
When I was using my phone to view xda forums, i noticed that peoples quotes were actually lightly grayed making them very easy to distinguish from the rest of the post. Its getting increasingly annoying to keep flipping back and forth to "Thank" someone. So...is there some sort of setting to make peoples quotes easy to distinguish from the rest of the post, or is this just how it is with xda 2010?

You really think it's hard to ditinguish between the white and grey backgrounds?
Short of it being white on black and black on white, I don't think it could be much more obvious to be honest.

check cnet.download.com for some. Check whether it's freeware, shareware, trialware ect. Hell even download revo uninstaller to uninstall the program after you use it. Revo is great for things you just want to use a time or two and don't want bogging your system down.
edit, hell, I bet there's even some flash sites that will do it, no programs to install at all, but cnet would have portable programs to use without installing

Now the URL is : http://dl.xda-developers.com/attachdl/fb23e0b5ec01b7962ec67603493c4dae/506da0aa/1/3/7/4/9/4/2/asd.jpg
So it would be better if the image is uploaded in Image hosting servers like Imgur or Imageshack or even dropbox etc.

I was following the O2x development since I've discovered the galaxy note a few weeks ago.
I'd like to thank all the developers for their great work!
Good going (I'm a poker player too by the way)

Not the correct way.
Don't simply post thanks etc. try to ask/answer questions in your device's q&a /general section. Useless posts will get deleted eventually.

[APP] Note 10 and Note 10 plus Cutout Wallpapers and Live Wallpapers Collection

I have developed an app for the note 10 cut out wallpapers. The wallpapers in the wallpix app are created by me and my friend. All the wallpapers that are available are unique.
We allow users to set all the wallpapers for free.
Now we have also included the live wallpapers. But the live wallpapers are for pro users.
Here is the demo of live wallpaper : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsW7TCqioTU
To download the app. Go to play store and search for Wallpix or download it from this link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wallpaper.wallpix
Note 10 users should turn off the motion for the cutout wallpapers to work.
Here are the steps to turn off the motion on one UI
When you press and hold the screen and select wallpaper from the gallery not from the app, there is a choice to activate motion is already active click on it to disable and then go to WallPix app and select the wallpaper you want, hope I was clear.

I believe it's called advertisement. That's like saying you won't eat at a specific restaurant, just because you saw their commercial on every channel on the TV.
Screw you, Hardee's! (Or Carl's, Jr depending on your location) You've spammed every TV show and channel with your hamburgers. I'm suspicious and never eating there again!

Umm i guess you do not understand how an app and how a "fast food" commercial works. Fast food restaurants dont put location trackers, advert pop ups, trojans, viruses, data receivers, key stroke recorders in your food dummy! People create apps for what you need the most, which right now might be cutout wallpapers, as a front for their apps and then spam you with adds in you notifications or worse mine your data. The way this guy starts by saying "i found an app" which he actually created then spams them on all possible websites and actually creates new accounts to do it (if you check his profile) sets off all alarms in my opinion. You are welcome to install and use it. I was only giving a heads up. Didnt know i will have to explain how malicious apps work.
Here u go.....enjoy!

You need to step back and calm down. There's no need for name calling.
The only permission his app asks for is storage.
Again, I see no issue with him posting about his app on all websites. Again, that's advertisement. Just because someone advertises his own app does not make it malicious.
Prove to me that his app is malicious and I'll concede your point. Until then, you're just slinging mud and name calling for no reason. You're just destroying YOUR credibility, not the app developer's.

Checkout this tweet too https://twitter.com/MKBHD/status/1168531550369136641
I didn't name call and again it's the user's choice to install or not to. If you are happy to provide permission to storage, it's your decision and you are entitled to do as you like. Freedom of speech, but I guess no one really cares about it any more. All I did was give people a heads up to be careful. There are a ton of apps providing the same stuff doesn't mean they are all in good faith. Chill....

You might be legit bro but the way you approached was misleading..was it hard to say "I created an app so check it out?"
***FYI - the spiderman with the white should have a transparent background (which makes it black on my phone) but when I uploaded it added white for some reason
for some reason wallpapers are not aligning well on my note 10 plus. I am losing some inches from the top of screen due to black band towards the top
