I'm in Cincinnati Ohio and have a solid signal on 4g (wimax)
If I run a speed test on 4g and a stock GB rom I get 9.9mbps down and .9mbps up.
If I run the speed test on 4g with the new ota ICS build I get .58mbps down and 1.5mbps up.
What gives? Is this a modem issue? If so, can I use the EL29 modem with an FF18 rom?
Have you tried updating your profile/PRL? You can use any modem you want. Flash it with odin and update profile/PRL after.
I'm playing with PRL's now. I"ve got the sprint corporate one on, but that only alters 3g. I've flashed a stock GB rom back, so I'm going to try a ICS and the EL29 modem now.
Its been poor with ICS. That's why I stayed with GB until everything gets ironed out. I like ICS but the data speeds that comes with it well... sucks lol

Anyone getting significantly slow speeds with the fd16 modem installed?
Yes but I always get **** speeds here in Utah where I live
Slower for me, and GPS didnt work. I went back to EK02.
is ek02 better? have you tried el29?
Same here
FD16 pretty much killed my 3G. Lucky for me, 4G is not too bad in my area. I may go back to EL29 if the next leak doesn't improve 3G. Battery seems to be a little better on FD16 than FD10.
Sprint's 3G is pretty terrible in general. I hope what people say is true and that Sprint will be revamping their whole network including 3G this year.

same here in south tx I have tried every thing modems..etc and it has come down to this area is just bad, here is how I compare speeds in my area
3g=dialup
4g=3g speed if I can even get 4g
maybe
LTE=4g speed when up and running
Did update your PRL and Profile? That has been important. For me the FD16 had been the best for both 3G and 4G. In fact I got 4G in a location I used to barely get 3G just today! Try a few different modems and see what works in your area.
FD02 is the one I keep going back to.

FD 16 speed where pretty bad. 4g speed was good. GPS connected pretty quick so that was a plus . Just upgraded to FD19 Rom still kept the FD 16 kernel going to upgrade to FD 19 modem hopefully a betted improvement
for some reason after i flash a rom i will only get 1x and i have to go back to a stock rom to get 3g back. has anyone else had this problem?
Check your prls and modems

i have updated the prls and i was on the latest modem and it was still doing it. then i tried downgrading to LF9 modem with no change. im on the LG2 build.
Which ROM? On Cm10 early builds I only showed 1x but if doing speed tests and looking at dbm signal output I was still getting 3g speeds.
i first tried it on blazer ROM 1.5 then i seen there was an update so i tried 1.6 but got the same thing
i have also just tried it with Team VeNuM's blue themed rom and i have the same outcome
What kind of real speeds are you getting when you speed test? It's entirely possible that you truly only have 1x speeds in your area. Sprint has "strongly encouraged" Samsung and HTC to always show 3G in areas where there is supposedly 3G. Most custom ROMs have corrected this by showing actual speeds in their ROMs. So it could also be that you truly are only getting 1x and the stock ROM is falsely reporting 3G.
ok well now that im home (i was away on vacation in the Poconos) i ran a speed test and got decent numbers this is the results of 3 tests i ran /ping- 92, 77, 76 /download kB/s- 214.6, 236.8, 152.5 /upload kB/s- 78.3, 77.8, 101.6. so i backed up, flashed Team VeNuM's rom and wiped cache but when the phone booted it showed 3g so maybe b/c i was in PA it might have been saying i was in 3g when i really wasnt proving what you were saying jdogg836. so heres the results of the speed test /ping- 121, 134, 206 /download kB/s- 89.1, 67, 64.4 /upload kB/s- 61.1, 28, 58.6 it's showing much slower speeds but im not sure why

Call sprint...lots of antennas are only around 60-70% right now....got to do with upgrading system from my understanding...also...upgrade your radio to LG8 and see what happens. :fingers-crossed:
but that big of a drop within minutes? yea im on the LF9 modem i downgraded from the LG2. are people having better luck with the LG8 from the LG2?

Check to see if the time you flashed has the 1x/3g mod... stock Roms only ever show 3g even when they are on 1x..
You can also go into the market and download netmonitor which will tell you your true network type.
I'm almost willing to bet that's the problem.
I too live in pa and most northern parts only have 1x service.. just so you know.
Harrisburg/reading/Lebanon is where you start getting 3g.
Edit. Most of what I said was already explained. Didn't see jdoggs post.

Personally I've has this problem since day 1 with this phone. On Airave it seems worse than being connected to towers for me. Sometimes mine goes from 3g to 1x to no data. Turning mobile data off and on usually fixes the issue. I've tried all radios, no difference, LG8 seems to keep connection longer.

I've had newer one since the day it came out, no problems with any other phone I've had, just s3. I believe the problem to be the phone, sprint, or my isp.
this message brought to you by my GalaxyS3
I have had modem issues since day one too, I got a new phone because of the poor signal and it's the same.
I tried all the radios this weekend and found no real gains with any. I saw the 1x indicator with the CM10 7/29 build and the AOKP ROM.
Stock based ROM all showed 3G, but it would make sense if they are lying, although I would see 1x in distant lands on my EVO.
I will try the speed test.
It's also worth noting that I have a friend with a stock HTC X one getting about the same signal as me, so it may well be that sprint is messed up here.

I'm not sure at this point, tried everything under the sun, just today I got into the Airvana management page and set it to my router's reserved IP for my Airvana. I think its Sprint also, but you know when I'm right under the Airvana, it seems my s3 keeps solid data connection. This could very well be a weak radio in the S3. All I know is I never had this issue with any previous phones. Maybe 1 day someone will figure this out as Sprint Airave techs are worthless, I feel like I know more than they do!
My problem is even worse since I rooted and flashed AOKP. Hopefully someone can help here. I can make phone calls, it shows 1x, but I don't have a data connection...
Wondering if it is my area. I haven't had issues before. Maybe I should call Sprint to see if they are messing with the towers.
UPDATE: Fixed by flashing stock rom and using the ##72786# in the phone keypad thankfully.

Hi guys,
Sorry to be turning to the forums, but I have no where else to turn. I was hoping I could find a solution here from someone (or a group) of you guys that might be having the same problem. I live and work in lower manhattan, and I have the Sprint Epic 4G touch. I upgraded to ICS manually the day the update came out and people gave directions on how to manually update. Ever since I've upgraded, I've had SUPER slow speeds with 4G. 3G works fine, but for some reason, I cannot get download speeds on my E4GT to get above 43 kbps on the speedtest.net app.
And it's not just there, on anything that requires an internet connection, it does NOT get above 43kbps. Typically it's 2-7 kbps. I mean this is abysmal. When I use 3G it's usually pretty decent (expected 3G speeds). I've gone to the sprint store and the techs there keep telling me that they haven't heard anything in regards to this. And when I try to prove it to them, it always shows regular 4G speeds of about 4-8Mbps. But I mean it's obviously going to be fast, I mean they have a tower right there in the store or above it.
Whenever I'm near a Sprint tower, the speeds are fine. But if I'm 2-3 blocks away, speeds go down to 2-7kbps. It's so frustrating.
I've done a PRL update, Profile Update. Samsung software update, and update firmware in the System Updates section in system settings. I've been updating all these settings countless times over the past month, and I'm still getting the same speeds on 4G.
It's so bad, I'm seriously thinking of reverting back to Gingerbread (EL29) just in the hopes that it fixes the problem. I initially had problems with the ICS update (overheating, batter running out in 2-3 hours, apps crashing, things just all messed up), so what I did then was a factory reset from the System Settings section and it fixed 'some' of the problems. Battery life is still awful, but its at least fixed other issues. But the 4G part is still horrible! It's been that way since I upgraded to ICS manually.
I searched the forum and haven't really seen people reporting the same thing. It's sporadic, but I was hoping maybe someone on here would have a solution or an idea of what might be causing the problem.
In case you need to know, I'm currently on
Model Number: SPH-D710
Android Version: 4.0.4 (Stock ICS update OTA except manually updated)
Baseband version: S: D710.10 S.FF18
Kernel version: [email protected] #3
Build number: IMM761I.FF18
Hardware version: D710.10
If anyone out there has a solution, please let me know. Or any advice. I appreciate anything you guys can offer. Please let me know. If you need to know anything else, please let me know... I'll write back quickly. If anyone else is having any of these problems, please let me know too. It would be nice to know that I'm not the only one having these problems.
Thank you so much everyone. Hope your having a great day.

It's possible that your phone doesn't play nice with FF18 modem. Every phone reacts different to different modems, so its possible that EL29 was just the modem for your particular phone. From what I gather you aren't rooted, this however, would be your only way to install a custom modem of your choice.
I have the same issue revert back to gingerbread if you want data speeds back. Ive sone evrything in the book to try to fix this and nothing worked.

No need to be rooted to flash a modem with odin, PM me if you need some info.
You can try flashing different modem versions and find out which one work the best for you
You need to try a new modem. On FC24, I have gotten 12+mbps on 4g at work. I used EL29 for a few days and I couldn't get past 2 mbps in the same spot.

Im also in NY and yesterday i tried a few different modems as well as Calk's ICS and Blue Kuban and i was only getting about 1 kbps down. No matter what modem i tried. I went back to Calk GB 3.0 on FG31 and that gave me the best 4g. Im also a manager at RadioShack and i've notice that the 3g on GS3 is alot slower than the 3g on my e4gt...so maybe it does have something to do with ICS.
Gingerbread good.
Ics no good. Bad. Crappy.
Pp.

I also work downtown but I am close to the Seaport. I have always had spotty and inconsistent 4G in my office but when I go outside it gets very good. I am running the latest FG20 Boost modem and it was working well (even in my office) up until there was a bad storm a few weeks ago, I think a 4G tower was affected. That day both my 3G and 4G service went down at my desk, 3G came back a little later but 4G has never been the same.
Trying some speed tests at my desk now on 4G and I am only getting up to 1111kbps but it is more around 600. 3G speeds are bad today as well, I usually get between 200 to 300 and only getting like 50 today.
Update: Just updated to the FG31 modem and my 4G speeds are still the same but my 3G speeds got better while sitting at my desk today. There has to be a 4G tower problem around the downtown NYC area because I never had speeds this slow before.
I am in Los angeles. I am running ff18, AGAT kernel, and calkins rom.
I just recently went back the the ff18 recooked Calkin's rom. I was on MIUI and one of the main problems was the terrible data speed.
Now that I am back on a TW rom, I am getting better speed, but far from what I used to get.
3g is at 50kbps to 200kbps.
4g, with a good signal, is around 800kbps. Sometimes it pops to 1.5mbps.
I used to regularly get over 3mbps with 4g.
Strangely enough, now the speedtest app shows my closes test location as Kansas. It always used to be Los Angeles.
I feel like there might be a relationship between the two issues.
Hopefully someone might have an idea.
All around Los Angeles county sprint has been horrible since the last so called "NV" updates that were only good for like 2 days? :/
Personally considering ATT for the amazing LTE support unless LTE for sprint comes out soon to save them.

Yea same here but I'm on Blu Kuban rom, did the nv update two or three days ago, and since yesterday have had issues playing netflix, used to never have issues, had issues downloading apps
I have running the Blazer ROM 1.7 and for some reason all my speeds are crawling slow. This includes 3g, 4g, and wifi. I've tried multiple wifi spots that are faster on other devices. Do I need to update my radio's or what options do I have to help the speed?
I hate to try and unroot and go back to stock.
It could be Sprint working on your area, tower maintenance, or an outage in your area. I get good speeds on Blazer v1.7 so it's definitely not the ROM.
EDIT: Try reflashing the LG8 modem, maybe something's up with the currently installed modem?
Try a bunch of different radios. You were probably on an old radio and updating to the LG8 radio included with Blazer ROM ****ed you up. I recommend trying 1 radio a day and doing multiple signal (dB) and speed tests throughout the day. Use the one that gives the best results.
