duplicate texts, not notifications - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi:
Since purchasing the at&t gs3, which i love, i keep receiving duplicate text messages. Messages are double in stock messaging and at&t messages also.
I am using go sms pro, and receive 2 of every sms. Mms seems to work fine.
I do have at&t messages notifications disabled. I also have notifications disabled in stock messaging.
I am not receiving double notifications, however, that seemed to be the only suggestions i found when searching.
Please help, this is driving me nuts.

solved
Update:
After much research, I decided the problem was the stupid at&t messages app.
I called at&t and had them remove at&t messages, and add visual voicemail, and problem solved.

I have the Galaxy Nexus running jelly bean on at&t, and I sometimes get these duplicate texts. I'm not sure what you mean by having at&t remove the messaging app though. Is it a package of the your phone plan? I just came from an Iphone in case that matters. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi:
Yes, at&t messages uses a different type of voicemail. If you have used it, then visual voicemail will not work. You have to call and have them deactivate at&t messages voicemail, and make sure visual voicemail is active.
Hope this helps.

Question for Google Voice users

Hi everyone,
I'm using a GSM version of our GN. I only use Google Voice as I change carriers very often therefor I never want to give the carrier phone number.
When receiving a call on ICS we have 3 options:
- pick up
- Decline
- or send a quick preset text message.
Is there a way to make the phone send the text message out of GV and not the carrier Caller ID?
I'd pay for an app to do just that.
Thanks
turn off texting on the phone altogether and it forces GV to send any texts...but you lose MMS capability...
when you choose to send text, does it ask you if you want to send it through GV or regular? probably not if the call comes in on your regular number...try having someone call your GV number and send them a text to see which number shows up...
if that works, just use the GV number for everything
Yeah the text reply is useless because it uses the built in texting and not the GV app. That was the case when I tried it a year or two ago it might have changed now but I doubt it.
Also GV has MMS now (receiving).

I've heard rumors some people can get MMS. (through some kind of forward to gmail setup) but it's never worked for me.

Not quite... you can receive MMS from a Sprint sender. That's it. Your provider doesn't matter, nothing else matters. Only Sprint senders.
None of my friends have Sprint (or anyone I know really) so for all intents and purposes GV still doesn't have MMS (at least for me).
On a similar note...does anyone else feel google treats Google Voice as a red headed stepchild?
I have been using a year and a half old version of the app because it's the only one that treats the back button as an actual return to main screen button...instead of some funky cycle through every previous text button. It is also the last version to handle notifications correctly (newer versions keep the notification in task bar if you reply to one online)
I've tried setting my phone to use GV as the default way to send texts, but still see he same bad behavior with Verizon texts being sent from quick messages. Sucks!
Probably will need an updated dialer from google, but if anyone has any other ideas I'll try them...

I don't think so. I receive MMS from people all the time in my inbox (Sprint and non-Sprint). You have to make sure email notification when you get a text is on I think.

[Q] Google Voice and MMS work now? Sort of.

My friend just sent me a picture to my google voice number. I received the text message part just fine, but the actual picture was rerouted to my email address associated with my GV account. So I received the picture! Can anyone else confirm that this works for them?
I can't seem to respond from my email account back to my friend with a picture, nor can i send a picture from GV to my friend in response. But this hasn't ever happened to me before, so I am a little excited!
Yes, this the new and half-baked MMS feature in GV. As long as you've got GV set up to email a copy of your messages you can view pics and whatnot via email.
If they're on Sprint and send you MMS then you will receive it in your email inbox. This has been true since Sprint started integrating GV.

Just an FYI, T-Mobile doesn't support MMS to Voice yet. So, MMS sent from a T-Mobile number won't reach Voice, but MMS from Sprint will.
yeah, as it happens, she is on Sprint, but she sent it from her iphone. I tried doing it from my work phone (iphone on verizon) and send one to my gv number from my gnex, and neither worked. Sorry to rehash old news, I guess.

Every SMS is sent to email. Best way is to create a filter so that all "SMS From" subjects you set to auto read and archive and label SMS.
That way when you do get a real MMS, you can go to Gmail real quick, pull up the SMS folder and see the SMS email with the picture.

Yes, as I said this is very old news. Sprint GV users sending MMS to other GV users gets forwarded to their email.
is this still working for people / does it work with all carriers?
I tested it a while back, sending an mms from my sprint phone to a secondary gvoice account (not the one associated with my number), and it worked fine.
I've had several people on other carriers try to send me MMS to that same gvoice number, and none of them worked. Has anyone had it work for other carriers?
I'm trying to test it out as we speak. Enabled forwarding to my email address. Only getting SMS, no MMS.

It only works coming from Sprint users who have GV integration. Its not working in any other situation.

I just set up the Voice App on my Photon Q (with Sprint) have my Sprint Number enabled as my GV number. Had friend send me a MMS from At&t went to the standard MMS app on the phone. Didn't show up in Voice or Email. I don't have sms to email turned on because it alerts me 2 times (once for email once for text). That isn't very efficient and rather annoying.
I just adjusted the settings to forward SMS to email and the same response... The MMS went through on the phones stock messaging app even though google voice is set to receive all Messages...
This would be super cool to have working seamlessly!
MMS to Google Voice number from any carrier
I was having problems with sending and receiving mms from my Tmo Note 2 and needed options.
I install "go sms pro" (free)
It works well with sending and receiving mms through the app.
I tested it out on GV and I can send a pic mms to my google voice number and it will pop up in my inbox as a text and can see the picture.
The only thing I am trying to find out is how to send mms from GV number to my cell ???
Any thoughts.

How to turn OFF SMS?

HI all!
I searched, found lots of threads about how to turn SMS NOTIFICATION off ... but .. I want to turn SMS off completely on my galaxy nexus ...
I am on Verizon, but, I'm guessing some folks would like to turn it off on the gms prepaid plans too ...
Basically, I want to go google voice, ALL IN!! Have everyone call me on my gvoice number, use my gvoice voicemail, give up MMS and use email for pics, and google voice for all normal sms txt.
I want to completely ditch my verizon txt plan, BUT, I don't want to have to pay for folks that sms txt directly to my cell phone number.
Is there a way to "shut off" sms to my cell number on my galaxy nexus?
Thanks!
Call Verizon and ask them to shut it off, I'm sure they are able to that way.

verizon text plans
I don't you can have no text plans with Verizon, but there is a choice to pay only per text message with no monthly cost.
By default, Google Voice will still route the text messages to your phone, unless you turn that off, and choose to forward them to email.

I can grooveip then google voice txt over data, so think I'm all set, that set up lets me send unlimited sms that don't register with the cell company as sms.
I, and it seems other folks would too, need a way to NOT pay for spam / unwanted sms txt to our cell phone numbers.
Anyone else got any thoughts? Sounds like this isn't a Galaxy Nexus question then, I thought my phone could turn this off. Is there another more general forum I should be asking in?
Thanks!
The answer was already said, try reading please.
Call Verizon and tell them to block SMS on your line.

Verizon can block all texting, and can remove the texting charges from your account assuming you have an individual plan with a separate texting addon.

yes. sending and receiving messages cost money in the US.
to the OP, i used to work at VZW, they can block texting completely.
I thought if the phone actually didn't receive it from the towers its not charged to the account. I would use a freezer and freeze the messenger app

OK THANKS! If was a setting I'd just try it right out, but, before I call VZW then ....
If I have VZW turn off sms for my account, if someone sends me a sms, does it bounce back at them, or just look to the like it was delivered, and go off into nowhere?
THanks!

The phone won't physically receive it to where you can look at it but the data will still be sent to the phone.

Constant Google Voice voicemail notifications

I've been using Google Voice for over a year now, and YouMail before that on my Palm Pre 2, so I haven't used Verizon's voicemail in a long time.
My issue is, every time that I get a text, I also get new voicemail notifications for voicemail that I have already listened to. Sometimes I will get "10 unread voicemail" notifications, most of the time it's one or two unread VM's, it is very annoying.
I've reinstalled the app, cleared data, and I've marked all VM's in Google Voice unread and then read - nothing works
Any other ideas?
I think there is a setting you can change so it does/doesnt notify you via sms/email when you get a vm.
You need to change this on a computer, not the app.

Yes that option does exist, but I am not getting text/email alerts of voicemail. I'm constantly getting voicemail notifications, which I want, just not the same ones over and over

I have the same issue on my Nexus 4, 4.2.2. It is very annoying and the fact that this obvious bug has not been dealt with does make me wonder if Google Voice is going the way of Google Reader.... No devs. Maybe Babble will solve it... The only alternative I have found is turning off the integration and sending a text for the voicemail to the phone. Pretty kludgy.
Ugh, hoping for complete Babble overhaul as well. The entire app is a mess really

I agree with this. My problems were different than yours. I didn't get notifications on a regular basis. Then I'd get 10 notifications for messages I never received. Sometimes a phone reboot would send messages to me, but not always. My gmail account had the notifications but they weren't pushed to the app.
I got tired of it, and went back to sprint VM. I wish sprint visual voicemail was an option on this phone. - Note, I am NOT rooted, and use this for business and cannot root (company policy).
I just found this thread when I went searching for solutions to this same issue. Did anyone figure out a solution or a workaround?
I'm also experiencing the same issue.
Me too. Two different phones now. 2013 moto X and droid turbo 64 gig. A lot of times for me it does not seem to be triggered by the reception of a text message. It will just happen. It also seems like it's just related to a few messages in my voicemail. This morning, I got a notification from a voicemail from August 5th that I listen to that day and have been notified maybe 3 or 4 times since that it existed. I'm about ready for the kludgy workaround mentioned earlier to turn off notifications on my phone and turn on text message notifications for it. Also hoping that this post will spark some new interest in fixing this problem or even better remind someone to post a solution that they found.
google voice app settings
I have had the same issue on my Samsung Galaxy S3 ever since I started using a Google Voice number. I get my google voice voicemails in Hangouts, so there should be no reason for me to receive a voicemail notification for them. I was just looking through the Sync And Notications section of the Settings inside the Google Voice app, and I found that I can uncheck the voicemail notications. Hopefully this will not affect my receiving notifications for my regular phone number (the one attached to the phone), or receiving hangouts messages with the Google Voice number voicemails.

SMS settings missing in Verizon S8+

I originally ordered and used the S8+ on T-Mobile. I wasn't happy with the service, returned the device after using it for a week and a half and went back to Verizon and i'm noticing differences between the 2 different carrier phone model (which i expected to see).
The S8+ on T-Mobile allowed me send SMS messages (using the native Samsung Message app) that were as long as i wanted and they did not get broken up. On my new Verizon S8+ all incoming and outgoing messages are cut up and sent individually. On the T-Mobile version, there were settings in the Message app to change the different SMS settings and coding and that are missing on the Verizon model. I even enabled and used the terrible Verizon Messages app to see if i could make changes there, but there were no options there either.
Does anyone know how this can be fixed, or better yet, if it CAN be fixed? It's kind of frustrating. And Google provided no help except threads like this that were started and never completed with an answer.

That sucks. I know that SMS and MMS can be tricky. May have something to do with carriers. I have had to mess around with using different ones in different situations. I was using Chomp for a while with good results, but had to swap to Textra which has been doing well for me for my last 2 phones. Using Verizon on Verizon.

I am not having that issue. When someone send me a long message, it actually turn into an mms and I'm seeing it as 1 long message.
I also don't like the Verizon app, I want to use the native app. My native app works but the latest update wakes the screen on incoming SMS every single time no way to shut off. Very annoying, stuck using Verizon app for now as well. Have posted a thread here about that https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/screen-wake-incoming-sms-verizon-s8-t3594258 Also have opened a ticket with Samsung about that issued and Verizon community. Will see if it gets fixed with OTA patch. I have seen this before on beta builds on S7 edge, very annoying.
Also noticed they locked out the engineering menu, I mean come on Verizon. While I like the network way way way better than Sprint, this thing is locked and locked again.
I have been using the Android Messages app for a couple months now on my HTC M9. Just got this S8+ about a week ago. Hate the Samsung messages app. No individualized options for each person. The Verizon SMS app... well, it's the Verizon app, enough said. I have really liked the Android Messages on this now. No problems with sending short or long texts, or sending media. Seems to work the best out of all i've seen with the most options or features.

Those options only work in the Verizon messaging app, it may only be limited to others also using the Verizon messaging app to message you, maybe someone can test it to verify. But I can indeed verify typing notifications and read receipts do working in the Verizon messaging app.

AT&T does as well, but it's limited to within the carrier. Same for T-Mobile. And Verizon has it in their Messages+ app (which sucks).
