So I got my phone on craigslist from a guy. Just the phone, no cables or anything. I tried using my HTC usb cable, but it wouldn't work. I had to buy a legit Samsung cable for it to work. Now that I got rid of the stock ICS and installed a jellybean ROM, the HTC usb cable works now! Which is good, cuz I lost my samsung one.
Any idea why this would happen?
I don't think it matters or will help anyone. Just use OEM cables and one less thing to worry about.

Standard USB cables is universal, they should be all the same, with 4 pins:
Vcc, Data-, Data+, Ground (of course 3.0 have new stuff)
Maybe the HTC cables have built issues or you were using a USB port that wasn't delivering full 5volts. Sometimes I tried flashing Odin and it failed on cheaper USB cables. And since my desktop have weak USB power output, the file transfer to the Nexus fail sometimes unless I use a USB cable with dual connectors connecting to two full USB ports. But I don't think there is any prevention method to make one brand of cable not work with a certain phone brand, this is a universal standard, not Apple. Which is why I refuse to buy Android tablets that use proprietary ports.
Maybe he had something borked in his rom and didn't know and that was why he was unloading it.

yeah any micro usb cable should pretty much work. everything ive tried works fine (blackberry, samsung, htc, generic ones)
I had the same issue with me g2x charger. Only reason why I wanna use my g2x charger over the Samsung OEM one is because the Samsung one does not fit with my case so I'm forced to take off my case every night so I can charge

Has anyone else noticed that the Nexus is really picky when it comes to USB cables. My previous phones would work with any USB cable I used with it but this phone only works on about half of the cables I have. What gives?
I'm using 79 cent cables from Monoprice without any problem. I have about four different length ones and all are fine.

HTC, Samsung and 2x short <1m cheapo cables all work fine.
However another cheapo >1m cable doesn't work which is a shame
I noticed the other day, that my wife's LG Revolution charger/cable doesn't work at all on this phone. But the Motorola DROID charger/cable I use at work gives no problems. The off-brand car charger works just fine as well.
My wife's LG stuff is 5.1v but only 0.7ma. So a bit weaker charging rate, but the same voltage. Who knows.

I talked to a friend of mine and i guess it has to do with the USB cable specs. Each company designates which specs their phones will be able to use. Looks like Samsung went half-ass on that part of it.
My Blackberry, HTC, and Monoprice micro USB cables are working fine here
i tested with 3 other cables and only the USB cable came with the phone works.
I use the USB cable that came with my Touchpad as its long and it fits with the verizon case on it. And of course I also use the cable that came with the phone but it helps to have multiple cables for multiple locations.
5 I've got around home, work, car and spares/old ones have all worked fine for me

I've had major issues with cables/usb ports where I've never had issues with prior android phones. HTC Thunderbolt, Nexus One. My Galaxy nexus really doesn't like my front USB ports if I use a long cable (6ft), rather annoying.
I have tried 7 or 8 old cables, and the only ones that work are the two that came with the phone. Extremely annoying.

So today was at PC with my nexus and the PC has seemed to have forgotten the drivers (windows 7 ultimate 32 bit) so tryied to reinstall them. It seems my PC thinks the stock USB cable is a device and won't recognise it (phone not connected to other end) therefore can't see my gnex when plugged in. I tried another cable which the phone connected as media device but not seen by PC.
So now the weird thing after trying to sort out the drivers for a while when I plug the phone to PC the phone powers off instantly just like a battery pull and won't turn on until battery pull. I tried this several times with the same results. I then tried to charge through mains and it works.
Wtf is up with this?

I could try another PC today I guess. I'm using Franco kernel 250 and minco v4 and I haven't seen this reported in either thread which I read all posts. Must be damaged I guess, I did drop my gnex on a pavement outside even though I have a case it was quite a bash.

Just to update you guys this issue has now been fixed. I bought a brand new official Samsung USB cable and it works correctly. Adb and boot loader driver and interfaces all working fine.
I do how ever really recommend an official Samsung ac charger and official Samsung USB cable, the connector which plugs into the phone fits so much better, there is no play where the connector can move, it sits absolutely solid and the quality is much better than the cables provided with the phone.

Off Amazon for roughly £2.99 and the USB was around £1.19. Search Samsung android charger, chances are the item description with say for Samsung galaxy i9000 (sgs1) but it works fine as its micro USB connector. The quality is at least 1 billion times better than provided cables

I'd like an update if possible if you are able to get it warrantied? I thought once anything was modified that was it? And won't they argue that the crappy micro-B usb failing is the user's fault, rather than the fact it's an unreliable unresiliant usb port? *I miss the mini-b usb*
If its same carrier then of course same device, I don't see why it would be an issue, just nadroid it before you replace it with an older backup.
I went back to an osimood nandroid backup and guess what my charging is working perfectly! Does this make any sense? Guess my phone does not like ICS. No need to send it in under warranty now.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927R using xda app-developers app
I'd keep a close watch on it none the less so as to not begin experiencing the problem again only for it to occur outside of the warranty.
#1 Are you using the real Samsung charger? I've stopped using other chargers in an effort to prevent excessive wear/damage to my ports. They fit the most flush and smoothly it seems in comparison to half a dozen other chargers and usb cables I have used.
#2 Are you sure it wasn't just a bad flash? Did a reflash? did a wipe and then flash? Just curious but I'd give that a shot. Also checksum the ICS image you did use to be sure it wasn't a bad download?

Sorry to threadjack, but every Samsung charger/cable I've ever used has barely held itself in the port, loose and floppy like an old hooker's va-jay-jay. (inb4urmomlol)
Now Nokia, those guys can make a damn microusb cable! plug into the charging port, I can pick up my phone and swing it around by the cable if I wanted. takes just a bit of effort to pull the cable off the port...
And now back to your regularly scheduled banter...

Since you mention it, I can't argue. My nokia ports were pretty rock solid, but I still have my old Nokia USB cable, and while so far all of my samsung ports and cables seem pretty solid/not loose, the nokia fits in (short of making any dirty references :laugh pretty snug and too snug for comfort, which is why I mentioned sticking to the original ones in hopes of less force and wear.
I understand loose but now it works with osimood where it didn't before the same exact cables. Seems that there is something that changes with ICS and charging.

Now... That's why I avoid using Samsung's USB cable, they're too much troubles. I have two of them shorting itself out, so the Wacom Bamboo USB cable gets used instead - no problems. I wonder why Samsung makes the most unreliable USB cable, hmm?

USB cables! my wife and I both have Glides and with in 3 to 4 months both of the usb cables broke! I mean the end that plugs into the phone just disintegrated! I use a usb cable that came from a palm one phone, its twice as long and works wonderfully! although be very careful with the port in the phone! was caught in a light rain, and a single drop happen to hit perfectly on the charging port! that ended the usb functionality! still charged but could not use on a pc. I had already rooted the phone! I called att and they sent me a new one on warranty. I got lucky I guess, all I did was delete all the apps the used root and used root explorer to delete superuser.apk. rebooted the phone and sent it in!
I would say if you need to send it in, just flash the leaked ICS update and that will un-root and also restore a stock recovery. there's also a stock 2.3.5 and the stock recovery floating in the forum here somewhere!
Yup... -___- Mine just shorted out, from positive to negative - at least Samsung's charger itself is fault-proof (didn't let out the magic smoke when that occurred).

Me too
I just started having the same problem. I use to be able to use my phone while it charges and it would charge fairly quick as long as I wasn't heavly using it. Now even when I'm not doing anything on it, its charging ridiculously slow.
I thought it had something to do with my recent flashing of 4.3 but I flashed a MC2 restore and it didn't seem to matter.
Get the Galaxy Charging Current app. It will let you know the charging current. It should be *Now: 1698*. Mine would read 466 and I would reinsert cable(until I got a new charger/cable) until it read 1698. It appears there is a problem with OEM cable.

Been working great for ~3 months on my Sprint Note II. It said that when I downloaded the app too. Try the free version, I like it and bought the app for the dark background feature.
I would try another USB cable first. I was having the same issue. I tried a different cable I have around, and was charging like I was expecting. So, I order two premium USB cables from monoprice.
From the reading on XDA around here, it looks like the USB cable that came with phone get shorts in them fair easy; ie they're not very durable. For me, no biggie since I like to keep cables in various places--car, house, backpack, go to bag, etc.
It changing the cable didn't work, try a different charger. If that doesn't work, try the battery. If none of those work, then it's probably your USB port.
Although, the USB cable is most likely the issue.
If you've had the phone for awhile, try cleaning out the microUSB port on it. I used a toothpick and picked out a surprising amount of lint that had accumulated in there. It may help establish a better connection between the cable and the port.
Definitely seems to be an issue with the usb cable, I had the same issue, switched cable, and all is fine.

This happened to mine as well. I have taken it apart and tightened the micro usb socket twice now. Works for a while but the overall design is the problem. This has always been a problem with micro usb and is why proprietary sockets are far superior to micro usb despite all the blather I hear about how convenient micro usb is. You can convert proprietary ports when needed and they dont fail like this.
My other two Android devices are like two years and both use micro USB, and they still work fine. It might be the design of the Nexus 7 itself.

I had this problem with my old Samsung Captivate. It would get so bad the cable would actually fall out. Have you tried a new cable? I thought my phone was damaged but I ordered a new OEM cable because I damaged the original and it also happened to fix the charging and loose connection issues. After a while, it happened again so I just ordered a few more cables on eBay. The reason I chose OEM cables was because the Captivate had a sliding door for the USB cable that often wouldn't accommodate a standard connector. After that experience, I try to stick with OEM cables when possible, just to be safe.

Mine is different. The micro USB would perfectly fit into the port. I would feel and hear a confident strong click and the movement is minimal. However, it would not sometimes charge and have to play with the cable while at the port.
Funny... I though I was alone 'cause no one would write about it..
I got 3 cables, all with slight different behaviors but generally loose, one of them actually falls off.
Patience is highly and thoroughly tested when I want to transfer data to my nexus.
Mine is loose. I have to slip a piece of paper in with the cable to pack it. Otherwise it won't charge.
Mine is loose but that's my own doing lol but using a different usb mini seems to work
