Advantage to being thanked? - About xda-developers.com

While being thanked is obviously nice, I often see people who ask to be thanked in their posts... I am wondering if an advantage is gained at a certain level of thanks or something?

Nope - they are just 'Thank Whores' for the most part who see it as a competition.
My personal feeling is that people should be intelligent and decent enough to say "Thank You" without being prompted, but sadly that is not the case in the modern world.

The thanks meter doesn't really count for anything other than as a potentially wildly inaccurate measure of someone's ability to correctly answer your question
Users beg for thanks because they can. I generally treat such entreaties for thanks in the same manner, which you can guess. Stating something like "Thanks for your thanks" or "If my answer helped you please press thanks" is about at the limit between a reminder and rudeness. I thank people who give helpful information more when they don't beg for it.

^Those^ being said, if you do find over-the-line thanks whores (something like "I'll help you only if you thank me first" or "download link comes when and only when I reach 500thanks" sorts), you can report them to any of the mods...
They shall be taken care of...

Thanks whores are people who just seek attention and gratitude to make them feel worthy...
It's much more impressive to have 300 thanks WITHOUT begging, than 3000 with a signature begging, with flashing lights pointing to the button...

Why does your signature say Senior Mod while you are a ERD and the Developer Admin
Back to topic, People believe that having more 'Thanks' makes you look like a guy with respect or something.Better earned than something you got begging like pulser said.

Another 'advantage' is that more and more people send you PM's and ask questions and advice on any number of topics.

The Report Post should also have another drop down reason to select from,
Thanks whore
That way mods can get rid of those insane signatures, it's fine if they ask for it in a kind civilized manner..but it should not contain any IF and other conditional statements.

If they are really bad as far as size or flashing or whatever just report them and the mods will ask them to resize or edit if they agree it is over the line. I have reported a few really bad ones, 5+ inches tall, and they were handled.

Ya mods fix it when there are huge sigpics but not these,
Press Thanks If Helpful.
I tried reasoning with one sometime back and he said thanks button is there for a reason and that it motivates him to help others

I have seen several cases where people had huge columns of stacked text which were edited to be more community friendly. I had had some success in asking people to use the floatleft and floatright bbcode so they can fill out their sig horizontally instead of just vertically, but in a couple of cases, the mods had to step in and explain to the user that they were not playing well with the rest of the community.
Also, people, Nobody cares about the phones you had two years ago....
I understand what you mean about the begging and crying for thanks. The mods aren't going to do anything about those as they tend to be a self limiting problem. I personally add them to my ignore list if they are really stupid and the person is providing NOTHING of value. Obviously if they say, "Press thanks for an answer" or somesuch I will report them and then the mods will step in.
"I didn't read your question and I gave you an irrelevant suggestion from Google"
I helped you, Press thanks. please.
equals immediate ignore list. Especially when they have less than a dozen posts, none of which are truly helpful or even a fair attempt at being helpful, a big sig with a banner, and a donate button.
After enough people add them to the ignore list and they get no thanks, they might get it or they might leave. :victory:
Unfortunately people don't seem to automatically thank others for helping them. To be fair, the 8 per day limit may be getting them, or maybe they are using the XDA Classic theme so they don't have a Thanks button. I still help them too, but it is aggravating to see someone's profile where they have gotten 100 or more thanks and have given out 2. You can see that in the XDA app when you look at their profile, scroll down and look for Total Thanks.

I've never tried the ignore list yet, haven't been troubled much by noob PMs..does adding a person to ignore list mean i will not be seeing his forum posts too? I was under the impression that it just prevents him frm messaging me.
Archer's xda toolbar come in real handy here, it can hide sigs of individual users but it's not compatible with the beta theme.

Well, RHIP.
That is correct, adding a person to the ignore list means you won't see their forum posts, but it doesn't stop the PMs. I really don't like to do it, but there are some people.... You will actually see the heading of their post, then you will see a link to view their current post or remove them from the ignore list, so it only takes up three lines in the browser. I do clear it periodically, every 3 months or so.
I don't think you can stop the PM's of an individual user? The only way I can see is to block PM's from anyone not on your contact list, but I don't necessarily want to do that.

Is there a stable 2.3 gingerbread rom out there?

I know you people don't like these posts, but you should really keep the ROMS forum in order, it's such a damn mess, there's no making sense of it! it's crazy!
IS THERE a stable, 2.3 ROM for the EVO 4G out there, that supports ALL the hardware features of the Evo?!
A simple question that you think would be easy to answer, but none of the ROM descriptions actually contain this information. And go spend 2 hours going through 300 pages of comments, most of them completely useless.
This forum is such a horrible way to store all this information, you hackers really need to come up with an alternative.
You need to calm down buddy!!! If you don't like what you see on xda go somewhere else! There will never be a solid rom they just get better and better!!

WOW! Someone needs to get some booty
First off, wow, asking for a stable version of an operating system that's barely out on any phone yet is so terrible that it obviously seems you haven't been doing hours of reading. Skim through the first page of the Q&A section for the evo or any of most recent pages on those "300 pages" of comments and you will find people talking about their problems with these ROMs.
Besides that... ruling out the terrible wiki we have for the evo, I can only offer my own opinion in what gingerbread ROM I believe is best. I suggest the latest Cyanogen Mod 7 RC if you don't keep up with the nightlies. CM7 has just about every feature the evo is hardware capable of. It runs fine for me along with Savaged Zen's kernel. Try out different kernels and ROMs to see what is best for you instead of relying on 300 pages of comments.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!! That's for sure!

OP,
It's fine if you don't want to search. It's fine if you don't want to read through threads that are hundreds of pages long. Both of those things are really your problem, not anybody's here. Also, it's fine if you would prefer a "cleaner" interface or a more organized presentation of ROMS available for the EVO; even I think that's a good idea that someone could really take advantage of on their own personal website with AdSense or something.
But what isn't fine is:
"...you people..."
"...it's such a damn mess, there's no making sense of it! it's crazy!"
"...300 pages of comments, most of them completely useless."
"This forum is such a horrible way to store all this information, you hackers really need to come up with an alternative."
If you came in here to post that and expected not to be insulted, called a troll, or start a flame fest then you, my friend, have some maturing to do.
...most if not all are beta's or rc's (or based off), so i say no!
Nightly 36 of CM7 is working 100% for everything I've tried thus far (4G, wifi tethering, maps, camera) but there's no guarantee there won't be issues later.
First, I can say the information here is some what scattered but the amount of the users on this site would make it nearly impossible for a group of non paid Admins to keep track of. Second, almost all version of GB are as close as they can be to stable, if none of those please you compile your own if it's not that hard. Third, what about Sense? Do you want it or need it, could use some maybe? Finally, IMO the Destroyer V2 is solid, with a lot of options, but requires reading the first post to flash properly.
Im surprised anyone is replying to this arrogant jacka**

CM7 nightly 36 will have everything working, other than the slight chance you will not be able to get the gps working with the sense fix.
Or try RC8 of the ROM linked in the yet another AOSP Ginger ROM thread in the dev section.
Or if you want something better, learn how to make it yourself (Forum or ROM).

Been running SalvageMod for a few days now. Not one issue.
i've been runnung destroyer v1 for 3 or 4 weeks, love it, not one issue except i can't get the hdmi out to work, which is fine cause i don't use that feature, other then that its stable enough as my daily, bluetooth, gps, 4g, everything working on my phone
You're right. It's next to impossible, specially if you're new to the forums, to find out certain details about a ROM. The wiki page for the ROMs and kernels are so outdated and rarely, if ever, mention what doesn't work on that ROM/Kernel. Doing searches yield pretty much every thread since most keywords and tags apply to all of them, understandably so. The issue can be remedied by keeping the wiki section up to date.
I don't understand why everyone is so defensive. He's not attacking you, just stating a fact. Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely grateful for any forums such as this. Bringing an issue into the light should be welcome and not garner so much hostility.
Anyway... that's just MY opinion.

Was it too much to ask of the OP to simply ask his question? The roms, mods, kernels and themes are FREE for us to use and these forums provide us with a place where we can FREELY enjoy the dedicated work of the devs and improve our overall smartphone user experience. So what, if we have to do a little bit of searching to find what we seek. Do we not search for items at a grocery store or at a retail clothing store? Do many of us not use search engines to find what we seek? The point is this: Instead of taking frustrations out on the people who control/moderate these forums, simply ask the question and let those who are willing to help answer it. If that is too much of a strain then feel free to start a forum of your own and arrange it however you see fit.
As for your comment about garnering hostility, lets review:

Anyway, this worked like a charm my friend. Thank you sooo much!
Now one other problem, perhaps you can help me?
I am having a problem flashing roms. I have tried ALL THREE METHODS of rooting (Manual, Auto, Unrevoked). What's happening is:
When I flash CM7, everything works fine.
When I flash MIUI or BOS Liquid Royal, I keep getting stuck in bootloop (white evo 4g screen.) NO idea why. I have downloaded the file over 10 times each (in case of bad file, even on 3 diff computers.)
Is it because my Hardware version is 0004??
One side note, when I try to wipe dalvik-cache, I get this error:
Wiping cache...
Formatting CACHE...
Cache wipe complete.
E: Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(File exists)
You guys can refer to this thread if you'd like to know everything I have tried, or just ask and I'll answer again:

I come to xda purely for the roms. The support here sucks. Everyone that seems to know anything and especially those that don't seem to come down on those seeking guidance with really toolbag like answers. If someone isn't getting answers in the q&a section then what's the point of even having one. I'm sorry if upsets your precious rules but quite frankly in going to go where I can get help. My suggestion to anyone tired of getting slammed for asking a question or needing help I suggest you turn to android central as they have always been good to me and I see far fewer flamers there. We are all human here people. None of you were born experts, you had to learn from someone. So try lightening up a bit, untwist your panties and get over yourselves otherwise you will indeed lose all your membership base. This is supposed to be a community for growth, support and a place for android users to have fellowship. I apologize if what I have said has offended anyone as this is not directed at all of the xda community, but with that being said if you find yourself with your scivies in a bunch then I am probably referring to you. To those that are supportive I thank you, you are a huge part of what makes android so great.
As far as the error I'm sorry to say I'm not sure about that one......if it were me I would try a FORMAT ALL zip......it does a complete wipe or data and such by u still need to wipe dalvik........sorry I can't answer that one foe ya man.....I'm sure one of these guys will help I with that one.....good luck man......these fellas will her u going for sure.......ohhh........and ignore the TROLLS.......plenty software good guys around here

AKA.
Congrats, Your "that guy."
I <3 asshats. GTFU people, I'm sure this question didn't seem that importamd to you, but to this person it was. The DMV reference, yeah ok, its more like going to the library, and you happen to come up to a person and ask a question, and they dont acknowledge you, so you go to another source where you get it answered. Was this wrong, or should you have waited till the first one gave a damn?
Same thing happened to me. In the application there is an app called HTC I believe. I unintalled it and then unrevoked worked fine.
XDA POLICE! COME OUT NOW WITH THE CORRECT SUB FORUM AND YOUR QUESTION ASKED!
Seriously.. to the people who "come here for the ROMS" you know this wasn't a ROM post, ignore it. Man, XDA is srzbzness. Hope OP got his problem solved.

Yup really.
I hear your sob story daily about people leaving XDA in droves. I'll believe it when XDA shuts it's doors saying that everyone left because I made a post about following the rules.

The problem is, there is this nice little rule on the main development thread about where to post questions.
Take your white knight 'protect the ignorant' speech somewhere else.

Ok, this is getting ridiculous

Alright, 2 of the best Rom threads were closed in the last day because this community is going down the drain. I have never seen so many terrible and entitled people in my life. AOKP and Paranoid Android were 2 roms that I and KBizzle had asked to be ported to our phone, TCP and KBizzle were so gracious and awesome that they came through for me. Now a lot of the people in the threads are thinking that they (KB and TCP) owe them something and can order and talk down to them when they post a new Rom and something like 4G doesn't work, or the browser. Get over yourselves and realize that this is all done for free in their spare time, they have lives and work to do, not be at y'alls beck and call for a new build everyday. The EVO and Nexus S communities were and still are soo much friendlier and nicer to all the devs for their hard work and time put into their work. All I can ask for is everyone to stop with the attitudes and start contributing if you think they are too "slow" for you. I would ask a MOD to clean all the stuff up but I believe there is too much garbage to go through everyday. I hereby volunteer myself to be an AOSP MOD for the DEV section, I will go through the AOSP threads and delete all the garbage.
That is all. I am tired of losing roms and devs because people here are so rude.

Love aokp sad to see that.
Damn shame there's always A GROUP OF IDIOTS that ruin things. K biz is always so good at replies & helping, just all around good developer. In the light of the gsIII on its way, it's sad because it's just a little bit easier to lose more talented gentlemen. I would like to say thankyou to kbiz and others as well im thankful for Ports & Roms. I actually followed the paranoid tablet rom & I'm still on alpha 3 with the tablet theme just for 4g however i'd never criticize a developer for a feat. Not working, & i wish others would do the same.
I truly hope the thread being closed will be reconsidered! For some of us it's just that much more difficult to figure out how to PM. Hell i can't even upload a pic lbvs. Just keep in mind that once you reach "Celebrity" status idiots are gonna come out in #'s man but just remember the fans willalways out number haters! and it would be an injustice for your amazing art to be shelved! Remember "1 monkey don't stop no show"!
And for the record i changed my avatar to reflect my love for "paranoid Android"!
This ends up happening on XDA for every device I've had so far. I know users are ridiculous, but it's just as ridiculous to take your ball and go home. Quit updating, that's fine, but many times they lock down threads and stop hosting the files.
I'm an official moderator for BioWare, and I guarantee this community will never get as unruly and entitled as the Mass Effect 3 fans. I don't get paid to do it, I can't accept donations either, and I haven't gotten mad and stormed out.
Perhaps, if they can't take the stress of handling people, they should use volunteer community managers for their ROMs.

Devs don't need community managers, as each one of the people that follow a rom should do their part to learn and help develop. Rom users are not customers, and should not expect customer service.

ppl just need to shut the **** up w/ petty complaints and taking personal digs at devs. appreciate what you get; i'm not saying don't report issues or be afraid to ask for help; but there's a proper way to go about that sort of thing. as an end user on a hobbyists rom you aren't really entitled to **** folks, if u want things so bad learn to develop urself. a donation is not the same thing as purchase.
edit: also asking for ETA on roms is one of the worst things u can do, that **** was old before u even thought about typing it.

I wish the the rules for the developer section besides the 10 post or more" can't post any replies or comments unless you have contributed (developed anything) at least two things on the forums". This would definitely cut down ungrateful posts, and for the ones that could actually post would actually know that contributing anything is not that easy and would not take things for granted. I came across some sites like that required you to at least contribute whatever, haha. It would actually make xda developers, a hardcore developer site.
It happens everywhere the evo3d was the worse I have seen thus far devs dropped like flys for a good bit over there, its lame really but some people are just like that about everything in life lol.

This was done before so you can't knock me for trying (Please Help)

Hello my name is Johnny but you all know me as lorjay589 or the dev of the roms "FTW annihilation" and "Star Power". I am also a member and Creator of "TEAM REJECTZ" I do have major updates i need to get out but there is a bummer. I currently am completely without a phone. Ok i actually lost my phone in a crazy way and not bricked which i listed in a post in my thread but i will repeat it again. On 4th of july we where outside of my grandmothers house watching my fireworks. Nobody was paying attention to the kids and my little cousin ran out into the street. As i was running across to get him my phone fell out my back pocket. By then it was to late to get it because we had to run straight across to avoid the cars. My phone was pretty much crushed and ran over. I know I know i dont want anyone to feel sorry for me helli dont feel sorry for myself. As adults we should have watched the kids and not just keep our heads in the air. My children were fine so no blame on me. but my cousin could have gotten hit.
Now on to what im asking for. If it's possible no matter how big and no matter How little if any or everyone can make a small donate to help me, i will continue to help you guys. I love deving and helping advancing our phone so it wont seem so boring.
I also promise that im not going to get the phone an fall off the map. I actually have a great team standing by me 100% and i cant leave them hanging because i love those guys
Also i already talked to sprint. I cursed the rep out because they got smart with me. Saying, "Sir we don't honor life saving situations nor any made up stories so there's nothing we can do" Yea total A-hole.
Thanks for reading this and i hope to see you guys soon
Here's a preview of what i was doing b4 the phone was disfigured lol

I'm not sure what this cartoon is supposed to mean, but let me just say that not only is Johnny my friend and mentor, but he has always been an honest straight up guy with me. We would have no team rejectz if it wasn't for him. Currently team rejects devs have produced 5 ROMS, several mods, lock screens, themed apps, widgets, and boot animations. We have produced all this for FREE and never asked for anything back but a thanks. Now Johnny is in need of a E4GT to continue his/our development on. Just tonight he helped me with some custom images for my SuperNova rom v1.2 update. With out a phone. I was only able to complete my rom update with his help. Now we are asking any members of the community who are able to either donate a E4GT or donate whatever they can afford. The deductible for johnny's insurance to get another E4GT , or get it replaced rather, is only $100.00. I trust him explicitly and anyone who has any questions may pm me anytime. Otherwise if only 10 people could spare 10 dollars one of our best devs would be back in business. Thank you for listening and for any donations that will go to this cause. Thank you.
Don't close the thread....there are plenty of respectful and appreciative people on xda somewhere......I feel ya pain and it sucks to break a phone and don't have the money to get another one.....been there and it sucks....I am going to Cali next week but when I get back I will get paid and I will send you some to donate for your phone back.....I can't do much cuz I am in a financial runt myself but I can spare a lil for a good cause.

Why thanks?

I'm new here and I don't really get why everyone in this place seems to be asking for thanks?
Is it some sort of ranking system or what?
The thanks meter is a approximate gauge for indicating longevity/helpfulness.
It's polite to thank people with the "Thanks" button for rendering information.
It also obviates gratuitous posts that just say "Thanks!"
The Thanks button is definitely indicated if you asked a question like "Where can I download the Android SDK?"
Oh okay. "Thanks" for clarifying
The "thanks" meter indicates how much you contributed to the forum imo, and since most of us here at XDA are not idiots and spam the thanks button, the meter should be very accurate.

yeah that's little strange when somebody just ask you to give him a thanks
even if it's worth ...
I don't think you get answer very soon :fingers-crossed:
"if this was helpful to you" ...
well, in fact is not bad to get thanks that's why you become more involved helping people here and all are winners
also I think feedback = know-how is an invaluable "thanks-meter"
well.. done
Moved to About XDA section.
Its acceptable practice to include short message in your signatures, saying people to press thanks if they were helped by that particular post...the same applies for donations also...
However, if you see people "asking" for thanks, (for eg: I will tell you only if you press thanks" or "come on, hit the button) or different other variations...you can report them to any moderator, as "asking" for thanks is not acceptable...
The thanks meter in itself is not a nice indicator of quality...
To get a more better (not the best) idea of "quality", see the posts-to-thanks ratio...
Like someone may have 1000 posts and 100thanks, but the person having 500 posts and 90thanks would provide a little more "quality" work...imo...
Typed using a small touchscreen
as another user i use the thanks meter to indicate if the other user who is helping me is worth listening to and if they actually know they're stuff. as u can see i have a sig' saying the old "if ive helped you click thanks"
to be honest its more of a personal peev' i mean i just sat here and wrote paragraphs of text and searching through old threads just to help someone in texas get theyre galaxy ace unbricked the small effort they put in just clicking the thanks button is just acknowledging the effort i have put in. :highfive:
every time you get recommended a thread/link that user has had to go searching to find it for you, also like i say say i use my thanks meter as a confirmation that the info im giving out is not just spit-bobbed with unacceptable information
lol i really luv the new :highfive: lol every time i see it i hear "HI FIEVE!!" FROM BORAT lol

Some people on here have a need for some kind of self-recognition, and they try to do so in any distinguishable way.
For example, when postcount was the only numerical statistic, they'd just post crap to increase their postcount.
When we introduced thanks, they try and thanks-whore, to get more clicks, to get the number higher, to make them feel better about themselves.
Thanks is a useful indicator, but only when people use it correctly When someone who never asks for thanks has a high thanks count, that means more than someone who asks for it all the time - people who help without expecting gratitude tend to be the more helpful people!
where is it?
i had the same question in addition to "where is it"? i rooted my phone over the weekend and really want to send some thanks to helpful posters, but i dont see this button everyone speaks of.
I thought i semi-graduated from noob since i got thru rooting problems by using the search button lots, but i cant find this thanks button, so back to feeling dumb.
thanks (lol) for any help or guidance!
