Hi all.
i have noticed something strange.
Basically if you only have less then 2gb space left on your sdcard storage your device will lag REALLY badly. making it almost impossible to use! this has happened to me twice now already and the solution is simple. make sure you have more then 2gb space available.
such a terrible TERRIBLE design flaw on this device
been discussed already and very possible
the damage is not as bad as you describe
and its a bug as opposed to a "flaw"
we report it to HTC and they will squash it by next OTA
Actually hamdir, he described it perfectly. It took me 25 mins to boot my phone and finally get to file explorer to delete some files. It's cripplingly slow...

For me it was on 2.05, maximus 2.1 and viper roms did it. Restarting did nothing, it takes 10-15 mins just to boot up and being to register touches. Deleting a gig of data, think it was a gameloft game, caused everything to instantly go back to normal and smooth again. Its happened twice with me. The phone become extremely unusable.

yeah happens with me, its not lag but more like extreme slowness to load things especially after you switch from SD store to charge only
but right now i only have 700MB left and i don't have this problem its smooth as butter after i erased cache yest
something is triggering this
Thanks for the tip!
well i hope so because htc already crippled the 32gb storage down to around 25gb when you format it and now it seems you can only use a max of around 20-22gb. anything more and your phone becomes unusable!

Oh come on, you must realise that 32 is total, Rom, phone storage and sd. It beggars belief that anyone on here would not know that. You must also realise that there are overheads such as cache etc that are going to need some space and therefore you can't fill it entirely. Granted 2gb seems a lot but why talk as if any is too much.

best thing ever on the Sensation XL is the the reserved cache space on the internal, it helps gain massive IO speeds
HTC lowered the reserved cache on the HOX coming from sensation XL
so yes loosing storage is sad, but has its bright side

I recently installed the new RunnyRom 6.0 ROM, so it is my current ROM. With the previous version, at random intervals, my phone would either freeze after doing some simple task such as turning on the mobile network or just at random. At other times, the phone would not respond after the screen goes blank.
I am at my wits end and might end up throwing my phone at a wall. I've tried increasing the minimum CPU speed to no avail and other remedies from googling.
Must I buy a new phone? (my warranty is up btw, so I can't send it away back to HTC or the store I bought it from)
Before you say you are at your wits end, have you even tried flashing an entirely different rom to see if the issue presents itself again?
via xda app
Or a faster sd-card !
do you have ext on your sdcard and some kind of app2ext script?
Something like this?
It's a combination of sd card, sd-ext scripts running on it and bad reception. For me, the only ROM that doesn't have this problem is RSK v6.

I think this could be the problem, but I'll need to buy another card today to see. As for some reason my current card keeps getting errors when I connect it to my pc.

I will try to switch back to CM7/Oxygen and see if the problems persist with the same frequency.
Go back to CM7 than Oxygen to test. Oxygen uses a script if an ext partition is detected. You wanna try and see if your phone will work well without any ext partition and CM7 doesn't support it out of the box.
Or if you can't help not having ext partition because of your apps, how about you format your sd card, repartition and start fresh.
via xda app
So as I did a full wipe and reinstalled CM7, lo and behold, the phone freezes on me in the 4ext recovery screen. Wiped again and tried to reinstall RunnyRom, same thing.
Seems like hardware issue if you get freezes even on recovery. You can flash a stock rom as a last verification but since you don't have warranty you might as well consider it as a reason to get a new phone.
There's the HTC One series or if you can still wait a bit longer, Galaxy S III is about to make a debut this May.

I think I will need to settle for something a bit cheaper.
However, I have noticed that if my mobile network is on, most times it will freeze my phone if I use any app that uses internet such as Whatsapp, facebook or Google+. Not sure if that might be relevant. (I am on a CM7 ROM and it still freezes so it is most definitely a hardware problem I would agree with).
I had a similar problem with my HTC Desire. I was on the road a lot and noticed that when I came near certain areas, my phone froze. I think it was because of a bad radio or something like this.
Does it happen when you are in airplane mode?
I flashed the new CM9 and the problem stopped.
Alternatively, it didn't happen with the sandvold-ICS.
Have you tried flashing with a new SD-Card?

Never tried it with airplane mode on. There's less freezing with MildWild 4.4 but occasionally it will freeze.
I had this issue once with ics and drewis kernel, on tiamat no problems at all
From using Mildwild 4.4 I've realized that when my phone rings, the ringtone will not play and if I answer it as soon as the call ends the screen will not wake up. If I ignore the call and open any application, the phone will freeze. In both cases I will need to remove the battery.

Tried that too. No major change.
same exact problem, i'm running runnymede AIO, phone freezes often, especially when i'm at home where signal is not good.
i've got the feeling is mainly related to whatsapp, but it's just a feeling.
phone usually freezes when i wake it up from standby, the lockscreen ring does not respond.
it never freezes when in airplane mode.
i think i'll try a different phone part, then a different rom, it's a pity since this one performs really well for my needs.
sorry for my english, if i fix this i'll post here, cheers.

I think my problem was mainly the sd card as it deleted all of my photos and then randomly stopped reading in my phone.
I switched sd cards and ROMs and so far no freezes.

Hello,
im enjoying my HTC One X for the last 3 months with no problems so far until 2 days ago i wanted to copy some movies on the phone. before this i had aroung 7GB free on the device and the movie was @4gb.
once the copy was done my phone started to be veeeery slow and at one point showed me the "android.process.acore is not responding" error.
i have scanned the phone and didnt find any bad sectors or so. once im deleting the movie and going below the 7gb the phone is starting to act normally.
i know that a factory reset might solve the problem but i dont think this is case here since above 7gb free i didnt have any issues.
did any of you had this type of problem so far or do you know what might cause this?

Whenever I get the message you got in the opening post, it means I flashed a ROM incorrectly. For out of the box I have no idea why you would get that.
Did the system update go OK? No glitches?
If you disabled some system apps from application manager enable them again
If nothing else works, try to factory reset the phone. It will delete all app data (not sd card) but will reset any change you might have made.
(Alternative, if you are rooted, clear dalvik cache partition)
This is unacceptable. It happened to me too. I've just finished copying a 4GB file and I suppose I was left with aroung 1GB free and the phone simply freezes with response times of around 30s. i.e. I touch the screen, and after 30s the command is executed.
Somewhat the internal memory is being scanned or something like that and when free space is very low, it just freezes like this.
Really? From an HTC flagship phone which costs 600€? REALLY?? I mean, they advertise it has 32GB, it doesn't, it has 25GB and you can't even put 25GB of stuff inside because it gets outerworldly slow, so you have to leave at least som 4GB free, so in the end of the day this piece of crap has 21GB usable!
Well done HTC :good:

I've always had about 50-100 music tracks on my HOX before, but I recently decided to transfer more music to it so the number of songs I have on it is now over 1000. Since doing this, my phone has become incredibly slow. Start up time is well over a minute compared to under 20 seconds before. There is lots of lag, the screen becomes unresponsive for short periods of time unexpectedly, animations are choppy and apps crash all the time.
I'm beginning to think the only solution is to delete all the music off the phone. I hope this isn't the answer because I think it's pretty ridiculous that a device of this class has issues with music files given that it is a major feature of the phone.
If anyone has any suggestions or solutions it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

I have had the very same problem occur to my One X on several occasions, and I've yet to find out what causes it. The lag makes the phone almost unusable. It will take up to 10 seconds for the screen to switch on after pressing the power button, it's that bad.
It seems to happen after my phone has been connected via USB to a PC and I've been transferring files to it. Judging by some of the error messages that have appeared when I've had the problem, it is like the internal storage has not been recognised, or is running incredibly slowly.
I have noticed it seems to happen when I've almost filled the storage (in my case with videos) so I've tried to keep over 3GB free, and it hasn't happened in a long while now.
If anyone else has experienced it, and found a solution, I'd be very interested, too!
It was mentioned that it could be the sync app. Or maybe it's just when using USB drive mode. If you initiate the transfers from the phone (i.e., via dropbox or something) it doesn't happen.
There are some threads about it already.

I'm not using HTC Sync. I'm using a Mac and HTC Sync is not available for that platform. I'm not sure the workaround will work if HTC Sync is not running.
Okay so I've just removed all the music on my phone and now I have 21GB free space, but the phone is still being extremely slow. How do I get it to perform how it used to before I put the music on?

its the built in htc sync on the phone, it cause the phone to freeze up, if you follow my solved post you will find your phone works normally even after leaving only a few mbs left on the storage
It appears I've solved the issue of my phone being slow after deleting the music files. I simply left my phone for a short while and now it runs fine. Apparently it just needed a little time to sort itself out

What version(1.29.xxx.x) are you on now? I faced this weird issue when I am on 1.29.401.7 based IC rom. I felt it was an issue of that ruu. Once I updated to 1.29.401.11, it was gone. Now on 2.05, I see no weird things till now. Try updating if you unlocked.

I'm on 1.29.401.11. I'm also unlocked but there is no further updates for me right now. I'm quite annoyed that this issue with performance exists though in such a modern handset. Hopefully a software update will fix it.
I have 2000 mp3 files and no slow downs at all. When I'm transferring files I just copy and paste folders from my hdd in to the hox. But I'm not using default music player, but power amp. Maybe this is a key.

I had this issue last month on a 2.05 based rom. I had about 21 gb of music, with a few gb to spare.
It was a pain in the ass because I transferred the music just before I went overseas without my PC, and a nandroid resulted in bootloops, meaning no phone for a week.
I deleted about 300mb of music and all of a sudden, it magically started acting responsive again.
I wouldn't start this topic if it slowed down for 10 seconds after restart, but it is almost 60 seconds. Everything on the phone is stock, everything was downloaded from Google Play, which are famous games so nothing suspicious.
I didn't restart my phone many times, only 3 or 4 times now since I got the device but this looks like something new. I'd appreciate your comments, thanks.
Update: Let me tell you more about how it gets slowed down after restart. My phone runs jelly bean really fast and it is really smooth. However when it gets like this, it is like a galaxy s3 with a bad 4.1.1 jelly bean update installed on, if you know what I mean. FPS drops between transitions, that kind of stuff. This lasts for 55-60 seconds and it is fast and smooth again.
Have you put a new microsd card in it...if so...what speed....it may be something to do with that. Also...to speed things up, got to settings, find developer options (near the bottom), and turn off the screen and transition animations.....it will most certainly speed things up a bit.

Hey there, thanks for your response. I'm using a class 10 sd card and I'm not having any problems with the speed after that 55-60 seconds following the restart. The thing I actually wanna know is whether this is normal or not. If not, I'd consider formatting my phone.

Well, I remember restarting my phone when it was like brand new and as far as I remember, I too didn't have this problem at that time. Seems like I'll format my phone. Thanks.
Isn't it the media scanner that does that

What is your sdcard format? Try formating your sdcard to FAT32 or other things, or just try all the formats.
Do you have a lot of pictures? It's probably media scanner doing its thing like was said above, which is normal.

I had this problem before a few weeks ago, but a full boot.img stock reversion fixed things and I unrooted (then re-rooted) and installed the PACman ROM with the AK Kernel. Everything was fine until a few weeks later it started to lag really bad again. I'm talking the screen would hang for 5-10 seconds or just freeze completely. Earlier today I had to pull my battery about 3 times because of the freezes. I tried to install a new kernel a week ago, but that made it worse.
Why does it keep doing thing. I love the custom ROMs and the kernel tweaks, but I won't be able to use them if I go to stock...

I'm sorry, man. I didn't realize I had to report the issues exactly as I know them. I totally wouldn't resolve the problem myself if I knew what it was.
I guess you missed the part where I asked what software combination might be causing it.
Diagnosing problems you don't understand is exactly the kind of thing that makes it impossible to help someone. The phone may be right in front of you and you may know what you did but so far all you've done is tell us that:
1. Your phone lags
2. You tried a different kernel
3. You've pulled the battery

I don't know. Turning the phone on takes about 3 seconds, same with turning it off. After unlocking, it hangs for about 4 seconds. Opening Chrome takes 5-10 seconds. Pressing the home button while on any app takes 5 seconds before it gives a response.
Don't say those are regular waiting times either, before I had these problems, things would appear at the touch of a button.
I also forgot to mention that a fresh ROM install doesn't help.

I think that space is an issue. I've read that once you get below 3 or 4 gigs free, the lag begins. Supposedly, on any disk, you should keep about 20% free, which for a 16gb gnex is 3.2gig.
Edit: isn't 180ghz min pretty low? I've seen 384 as a min suggested if lagging is an issue. And i think you mean mhz.

Your device also might not be able to handle 1.4 GHz oc. While its originally a 1.5ghz processor mild imperfections in the manufacturing process result in it being sold as a (guaranteed safe at) 1.2ghz processor.
What that means is that not every phone will handle the same speeds, voltages etc. You should try running at stock speeds for testing purposes.
I have this same issue, I've tried a number of different ROMs and kernals. They all start out great, then after about a month my phone starts to get random lag, then as time goes on it gets worse and worse until I bite the bullet and start over again
